Episode Notes A key part of Memphis history is its role in the Civil Rights Movement, particularly with the Sanitation Workers Strike that brought Dr. Martin Luther King Jr to Memphis and his untimely death. Like the city itself, the story of Civil Rights activism is often presented through a Black-White lens. Yet, Asians and Asian Americans have been in the South since at least the late 1700s and in Memphis since the late 1800s. How then do Asian Americans fit into the history of civil rights? And how does knowing that history then change how we think about race, rights, Asian Americans, and the South? To answer these questions and more, today I'm joined by Dr. Stephanie Hinnershitz, author of A Different Shade of Justice: Asian American Civil Rights in the South. She shares some of the complexities of Asian American legal cases during the 1880s to late twentieth century and reflects on some of the cases that didn't make it into the book but still offer important insights into civil rights.     Dr. Stephanie Hinnershitz is an Assistant Professor of Security and Military Studies at the Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. She is the author of Race, Religion, and Civil Rights: Asian Students on the West Coast, 1900-1968 (Rutgers University Press), A Different Shade of Justice: Asian American Civil Rights in the South (UNC Press), which won the Silver Nautilus Award for Journalism and Investigative Reporting, and Japanese American Incarceration: The Camps and Coerced Labor in World War II (University of Pennsylvania Press), which won the Philip Taft Labor History Award from the Labor and Working Class History Association and Cornell University Labor Relations School.

For some, artificial intelligence represents the latest development in an age-old series of fantasies about escaping our vulnerable, imperfect, animal bodies. Humans have continuously developed tools to boost our capabilities; in the case of AI, we're amplifying the speed of cognitive processes. But what capacities remain distinctively human? Dr. Susan Hrach is the author of the 2022 Silver Nautilus Award-winning book Minding Bodies: how physical space, sensation, and movement affect learning (WVU Press, 2021). As an undergraduate, she spent a year studying at the Universität Innsbruck, Austria, which shaped her lifelong interests in world literature, translation studies, and global education. Her international teaching experiences inform her on-going research and practice. In 2022-23 she served as Fulbright Canada Distinguished Research Chair in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at Carleton University in Ottawa. Currently Director of the Faculty Center and professor of English at Columbus State University in Georgia, Dr. Hrach has been recognized by the University System of Georgia with a statewide Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Award; she has also served as a scholar for the USG's Executive Leadership Institute. She is a member of the International Coaching Federation and provides executive coaching within and outside of higher education, incorporating embodied strategies to support mental and physical wellbeing. LEGO Literacy Alert! Around the 41-minute mark, Susan busts out LEGO to answer some questions. ___________________ Hello there! We're Dr. Jane Hession and Ronan Healy. Nonsense! Powerpoint does! Plus, slides are even more amazing since AI can automatically input images of people with bizarre facial expressions and eight fingers! As nonsensical as that last line is, how ridiculous is it that learning (for whatever age) has lost ‘touch' (pun intended!) with the fact that physical space, sensation, and movement affect learning? This is why Dr Susan Hrach's book Minding Bodies: How Physical Space, Sensation, and Movement Affect Learning grabbed our attention. And while talking about attention, here's a quote from Susan's book we loved. “The goal of increasing one's IA (Interoceptive Awareness) isn't to become more accurate but rather to gain more control over our attention to internal signals and to better regulate our responses to them.” As the hype train for AI in learning continues to gather pace, we should also listen to the marginal (playful renegade) voices advocating for IA. Ira Pastor, ideaXme exponential health ambassador and founder of Bioquark, interviews Sister Ilia Delio PhD. OSF, a Franciscan Sister (Order of St Francis of Washington, DC) who holds the Josephine C. Connelly Endowed Chair in Theology at Villanova University. Ira Pastor Comments: On previous shows, as we've spent time discussing the bio-architecture of life, we have spent time at various levels of this unique hierarchy, from the very, very small (as we've delved into topics like quantum biology), to the very large (as we discussed themes like chronobiology), and a lot of domains in between: the genome, micro-biome, systems biology, etc. Today, however, we are going to further and deeper than we've ever been before. Sister Ilia Delio, PhD Dr. / Sister Ilia Delio PhD. OSF, is a Franciscan Sister (Order of St Francis of Washington, DC) and holds the Josephine C. Connelly Endowed Chair in Theology at Villanova University. A native of Newark, NJ, she earned a B.S. in Biology from DeSales University, a masters degree in Biology at Seton Hall, and a doctorate in pharmacology from Rutgers University-School of Healthcare and Biomedical Sciences (with specialization in neuro-toxicology, with an emphasis on neuromuscular disease) and she wrote her dissertation on axonal dysfunction in an experimental model of Lou Gehrig's (ALS) disease. She then moved, during her post-doc period, to obtain a doctorate in historical theology from Fordham University, NY. Following graduation from Fordham, she taught in Science and Religion at Trinity College, Hartford, CT. For the next twelve years, she was Professor and Chair of Spirituality Studies at Washington Theological Union, where she taught courses in the History of Christianity, Franciscan theology, and Science and Religion. She then became a Senior Research Fellow at Woodstock Theological Center, Georgetown University concentrating in Science and Religion. She is the recipient of a Templeton Course in Science and Religion awardand the author of seventeen books, including The Unbearable Wholeness of Being, which won the 2014 Silver Nautilus Award and a Catholic Press Association Book Award. Other books include Care for Creation, The Emergent Christ, and Making All Things New: Catholicity, Cosmology and Consciousness, nominated for the 2018 Grawemeyer award. She lectures nationally and internationally on topics including evolution, artificial intelligence, consciousness, culture and religion. The Intersection of Science and Religion Dr. Delio's work at the intersection of Science and Religion is heavily influenced by the teachings of Jesuit scientist, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, who devoted his spiritual writing to bridging Christianity and evolution. Like Dr. de Chardin, she sees the essential need to integrate Science and Religion toward a new way of thinking. Her research interests focus on exploring divine action in a world of evolution, complexity, emergence, quantum reality and artificial intelligence. She continues to lecture and write on religion and evolution, catholicity, cosmology and culture, artificial intelligence and human becoming. She's also the head of the Omega Center, whose mission is to deepen Teilhard de Chardin's integration of science and spirituality. On this episodes of ideaXme, we will hear from Dr. / Sister Delio: About her background, how she developed an interest in science, biology, pharmacology, theology, and how she finds herself in 2019 at the intersection of science and religion studies. An overview of Dr. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin's ideas. An overview of her concept of "Relational Wholeness" and  "Relational Universe." The importance of humans re-connecting with nature and the divine. Her views and ideas about Transhumanism. Her views on the topic of Entheogens (i.e. chemical substances, typically of plant origin, that are ingested to produce a non-ordinary state of consciousness for religious or spiritual purposes.) Her views on the limits of science and "Playing God" in the laboratory. Her views on evil. Welcome to another fascinating episode of Unclassified Woman. It's a biggie so grab a cuppa and a journal ;-) Today I'm speaking with a treasured mentor of mine, Seren Bertrand. It's always such a pleasure to speak to her as she weaves together so many colourful threads of wisdom in what she shares. What do mermaids, swans, Isis, harps, and Cornwall have in common? You might be surprised---and you’ll never know if you don’t listen to this amazing conversation in today’s show. We’re talking about feminine consciousness, Celtic traditions, the interconnectedness between the human body and the earth, how we tell our stories from generation to generation---and much, much more. Get ready for some major “Aha” moments! Seren Bertrand is a womb mystic and midwife of feminine consciousness who has been a visionary leader in women’s empowerment for over two decades. She is the co-founder of The Fountain of Life Feminine Mystery School and the co-author of Womb Awakening: Initiatory Wisdom from the Creatrix of All Life, which has been described as a revelation and a masterpiece. It’s an amazing book and I highly recommend that you get yourself a copy!  "Often we are called to a lineage or a place and we don’t know why. We just have to surrender, listen and travel with it." - Seren Bertrand Seren graduated with a degree in English Literature and Modern Philosophy before embarking on the twin paths of a career in writing as well as journeying deeply into the spiritual feminine traditions. Her writing on female Tibetan refugees was nominated for an Amnesty International Award for human rights reporting. She is passionate about the practical embodied awakening of women and men in a mystical yet no-nonsense way which calls us into our true feelings, brings us back into the body, and roots us into the wisdom of the earth.  What you’ll hear in this episode: How the book-writing process felt like a pregnancy with a gestation of more than five years---and then a birth. Receiving the Silver Nautilus Award for the book, which covers many topics that were considered forbidden and heretical for thousands of years: menstruation, lunar consciousness, and birthing wisdom. For Seren, the book’s release has brought deep feeling states of the feminine consciousness. Allowing yourself to become the container for the primordial birthing energy in every part of nature. The next book that she and her partner, Azra are already working on and how it feels like a continuation of that birthing process. The academic reading and research that goes into the writing journey. Listening with your entire body and not just your mind and ears and how oral traditions factored into ancient Celtic Shamanism. Plans to create an audiobook version with harp accompaniment. How a book is connected to your voice and vibration, which is connected to your womb, transmitting waves of energy and sound. Discovering the path of the swan priestess in Celtic mythology The cellular memory in Seren’s DNA of the Druids and Celtic traditions. The tradition of the prehistoric, feminine, Shamanistic, earth-centric womb religion of the faery folk and their history. Stories as a connection and an intimate weaving of “patchwork consciousness”. Seren’s interest from a young age in having a great love for the land and a feeling that different places have different personalities and characteristics. The significance of Cornwall as a sacred site. How to explain ley lines, womb awakening, and the gift of the human body. Understanding that the human body is more than a “mechanical lump of flesh” and why it’s a sacred landscape. The benefit of spiritual lineage in how they transmit through an unbroken thread in epigenetic memory. The calling in Seren’s life of the harp and how she learned to play and find her teacher. Why womb consciousness is the key to all creation. The story of Cygnus and its significance, Seren’s “Star Swan” name, and the swan connections to ancient Celtic traditions. One of the foundations of womb witchcraft: developing a lineage with the earth. Why the swan is the symbol of feminine Shamanic traditions in cultures across the world. The portals of life and death and the common threads between the mermaid and the swan. The mermaid and the swan priestess: not just symbols, but the legacy of real-life women who are our ancestors who are transmitting to us. The significance of the 11th day of the 11th month in Pagan worship and the swan feast, which is based on the migratory patterns of the swan. The interconnectivity of each of us to the earth and the celestial realm. The importance of taking guidance from our ancient ancestors: “You have to connect backward before you can move forward.” How stories can find a voice to reveal themselves in succeeding generations, even in trauma: “If we don’t tell the story, then we pass it forward to the generations after us.” The courage that comes in the gift of going through the shadows Resources: www.thefountainoflife.org  - For more information about Seren and her work.
