¡NUEVO EPISODIO! In celebration of the International Dyslexia Association's (IDA) 75th anniversary, the IDA is dedicating the recent issue of its journal, Perspectives, to structured literacy. In this episode, I speak with Jessica Hamman, the CEO of Glean Education, who authored two articles for the issue and co-edited it alongside Barbara Wilson. Jessica shares her path to dyslexia advocacy. Her parents were always involved in advocacy, and her father was even on the committee that created the definition of dyslexia that is now used in 45 states! As she went through the process of her own son being diagnosed with dyslexia, she recognized the great knowledge gaps that still existed among teachers due to a lack of training access. During our conversation, Jessica discusses her article in Perspectives about structured literacy and offers practical advice for parents told to focus only on their dyslexic child's reading skills. We then discuss the differences between dyslexia and dysgraphia and how those differences impact learning. Jessica and I also share our experiences as teachers moving from theoretical understandings to implementing our knowledge in the classroom. We wrap by setting straight a few common misunderstandings around structured literacy for teachers. Be sure to read the anniversary issue of Perspectives for free linked below! "Justice of a Sort"Esther 7:1-10 God provides another amazing reversal; justice is served, and Hamman meets the fate that he had set for Mordecai. The death of a substitute satisfied the King's wrath. With Mordecai and Haman, it was the guilty dying in the place of the innocent; with Jesus and us, it is the innocent dying in the place of the guilty._____________________________EstherGod Behind the ScenesEsther is the only book in the Bible that doesn't mention God. On the surface, God seems absent from this story. Sadly, that's a familiar idea for many of us. Sometimes, we may feel like God is absent from our lives and world. But the story of Esther reveals that God is always present behind the scenes, often working with great power, even when He may seem albescent to us. Esther is the story of God's loving and sometimes hidden providence, the truth that He is over all things working out His will, and the amazing truth that he uses ordinary, flawed people to accomplish His plans. In the end, through a series of stunning reversals, we find that God is definitely not absent but is, in fact, the central character in this story and that He is always at work for the good of His people and for His glory.Orchard Community Church8180 Telephone RdVentura CA 93004www.OrchardVentura.orgContact us at Info@OrchardVentura.orgOrchard's Streaming and Song Select CCLI# 160190
"The Man the King Delights to Honor" Esther 6:1-14 God's providence leads to a great reversal; Mordecai is honored instead of Hamman. This is really no surprise since scripture says that God "opposes the proud and shows favor to the humble." Both Hamman and Mordecai were servants of the King, but Mordecai had the humble heart of a servant, so he was the man the King took delight in honoring. Yet there is another man, a greater servant, whom God delights in honoring even more.______________________________________________EstherGod Behind the ScenesEsther is the only book in the Bible that doesn't mention God. In this episode, Dr. Grace Hamman joins Dr. Lynn Cohick to discuss the medieval mystic Julian of Norwich and her theological reflections on Jesus as a mother. Julian of Norwich, a 14th-century anchorite, had a series of visions and wrote about them in her book 'The Shewings.' She used the metaphor of Jesus as a mother to explore the character of God's love and the church's relationship with Christ. This image of Jesus as a mother was not meant to be taken literally but as a metaphor drawn from Scripture. Julian's writings provide comfort and reassurance in times of pain and suffering, emphasizing the love and care of God.Key Takeaways: Julian of Norwich, a medieval mystic, used the metaphor of Jesus as a mother to explore the character of God's love and the church's relationship with Christ. The image of Jesus as a mother was not meant to be taken literally, but rather as a metaphor drawn from scripture.Julian's writings provide comfort and reassurance in times of pain and suffering, emphasizing the love and care of God.Medieval illuminated manuscripts and visual depictions often incorporated the metaphor of Jesus as a mother, conveying the idea of the church being birthed through Christ's sacrifice on the cross. Avoidance is a natural human response in difficult times. After all, pain leaves us vulnerable. Avoiding the darker spaces in our lives, however, only serves to keep us from experiencing the sacred spaces that also exist. Grief and loss can be daunting if not stagnating. Quiet Time Coaching Episode 487 | New Thing Series — Part 42 | “Esther's Generosity” | Malcolm Cox Introduction A new thing! I'm Malcolm Cox. Welcome to your daily devotional podcast anchored in Isaiah 43:19: 'See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.' We are currently looking at God doing a new thing in the life of Esther. Today we explore Esther's generosity. “That same day King Xerxes gave Queen Esther the estate of Haman, the enemy of the Jews. And Mordecai came into the presence of the king, for Esther had told how he was related to her. The king took off his signet ring, which he had reclaimed from Haman, and presented it to Mordecai. And Esther appointed him over Haman's estate.” (Esther 8:1–2 NIV11) “For Mordecai the Jew was next in rank to King Ahasuerus, and he was powerful among the Jews and popular with his many kindred, for he sought the good of his people and interceded for the welfare of all his descendants.” (Esther 10:3 NRSV) Esther's Generosity Esther saves her cousin Mordecai from the evil plot of Haman. The king rewards her with the property of her nemesis Haman. He was a high official and undoubtedly very wealthy. The king benefits Mordecai specifically by giving him his signet ring. He appoints Mordecai as second only to himself. His reward is great. The parallels with Joseph are striking. In addition, Esther is generous. She gives Hamman's estate to Mordecai. For Reflection Was there a temptation for Esther to keep Hammond's estate for herself? Although she is Queen, as far as we know she has no wealth of her own. This could be her pension plan. Instead however she gives the estate to Mordechai. She wants him to be blessed. And the same spirit is a Mordecai. But as we see at the close of the book, Mordecai is looking out for his people and his extended family. “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” (Proverbs 11:25 NIV11) “Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.” (2 Corinthians 9:6 NIV11) “…when the kindness and love of God our Saviour appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Saviour, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.” (Titus 3:4-7 NIV11) Why not take some time today to ask God to refresh your gratitude for your salvation and inspire you to be generous to others? Conclusion I hope you find your heart, your life, your congregation and your world inspired by God doing a new thing. Until tomorrow, take care, and God bless. The distinct character of each one.Different seasons and times bring out different flavors, different inner lives of the land and landscapes. I think humans are similar. Even whole cultures. Different eras show up or play down certain shapes that human life can take, certain imaginative landscapes and possibilities. But across space and seasons we do have one Lord. That's the crazy revelation of Epiphany. But how does this same Lord show up differently in different times and places? Today we'll be talking with Dr. Grace Hamman, author of the new book, Jesus Through Medieval Eyes. Grace is a writer and independent scholar of Middle English contemplative writing and poetry and hosts the literature podcast, Old Books with Grace. Jesus through Medieval Eyes is a remarkably enjoyable book. Jesus jousting. Jesus giving birth. Jesus as judge, lover, mother, or knight were common images for Christ in the middle ages. How might they help us in our time, heal our contemporary views of justice and judgment, love and lovers, gender and sex?Now brush up on your middle English. In this episode, Grace Hamman and I get into a really great conversation around the medieval period and how Jesus was viewed. It's amazing to me how illuminating it is to read thinkers of the past and how it shapes my perspective in ways that are unexpected and helps me encounter Jesus in new ways. We talk about people like Thomas Aquinas and Julian of Norwich and we look at Jesus as a Knight, as Judge, as Mother, and more. Join us as we gain a fresh perspective by encountering the past and looking at Jesus through medieval eyes. Medieval Christians talked about Jesus in ways that can shock us today - Jesus as Mother, as Lover. These evocative ways of viewing Christ can open us up to a surprisingly rich and imaginative spirituality. Today on the podcast Katie is joined by Dr. Grace Hamman, author of the excellent new book, "Jesus through Medieval Eyes: Beholding Christ with the Artists, Mystics, and Theologians of the Middle Ages." We'll discuss the unique spirituality of the medieval world - the saints, monastics, and mystics who wrote of Christ in strange and beautiful allegories, and what all of this can teach us today. ---- Subscribe to Born of Wonder on Substack https://bornofwonder.substack.com Support Born of Wonder on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/bornofwonder www.bornofwonder.com ------- Hildegard of Bingen - O viridissima virga | The Marian Consort https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CI1TrxsrTsA The Big Pond / PRX: Hildegard of Bingen Jesus Through Medieval Eyes: Beholding Christ with the Artists, Mystics, and Theologians of the Middle Ages by Dr. Grace Hamman Follow along with Grace online: https://gracehamman.com Old Books with Grace Podcast https://gracehamman.com/blog/ Medievalish Newsletter on Substack https://gracehamman.substack.com Instagram @oldbookswithgrace X / Twitter @GraceHammanPhd

"We're not as young as some people who move internationally, which is one thing I think that I've learned a lesson from. And that's one of the harder things here, is that you've left almost your network and everything you've built up in your 25 years experience. You've almost gotta park that to one side and say, well, that was that country - now I have to start again." Kery Boucher Kery Boucher moved from South Africa to Ireland having never even visited Ireland previously. We talk about the cultural differences you encounter when you move internationally. On this edition of Parallax Views, we have a double feature edition of Parallax Views on the 2022 FIFA World Cup being held in Qatar. First up, filmmaker Miles Coleman joins us to discuss the new Netflix docu-series that's sweeping the internet, FIFA Uncovered. Miles served as a producer for this sports-meets-politics-true-crime exploration of FIFA, international governing body of football/soccer. It's a dive into a world of schemes, bribes, scandals, and corruptions that even led U.S. federal prosecutors to take on FIFA in 2015. In this conversation we'll discuss the controversies surrounding the Qatar World Cup, the Citizen Kane-esque tale of former FIFA President Joseph "Sepp" Blatter, the scandalous downfall of Qatari football administrator Mohammad bin Hamman, how the documentary came together, capitalism/money in sports and the problems it poses, how the real scandal is arguably more about FIFA than Qatar, sportswashing, the argument that cultural exchange will liberalize countries under the rule of authoritarian regimes, the Qatari perspective on the backlash against their hosting of the 2022 World Cup, the ambiguities and murkier elements of the scandalous history explored in FIFA Uncovered, smoking gun evidence of corruption vs. lack of smoking gun evidence for corruption in the world of FIFA, the cross-section between politics and sports, how the ambitious Sepp Blatter's hunger for power was arguably the cause of his undoing, Argentina and the World Cup scandal of 1978, Berlin and the scandal of the 1936 Olympics, South Africa and FIFA, and much, much more! In the second segment of the show, Prof. James M. Dorsey, author of The Turbulent World of Middle East Soccer and it's accompanying blog/podcast, joins us to discuss his take on the controversial Qatar World Cup. Prof. Dorsey argues that Qatar's interest in hosting the World Cup has to do with their soft power approach to foreign policy. Additionally we discuss covert information warfare by Gulf States like the United Arab Emirates (UAE) against Qatar, whether Qatar will follow through on reforms, the human/labor/LGBTQ+ allegations against Qatar, migrant labor and Qatar, the question of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and bribery, Qatar's reaction to the backlash against it's hosting the World Cup, the question Western racism against Qatar, the argument for there being double standards at play in the backlash against Qatar, human rights abuses in the Gulf States more broadly, regional tensions and the World Cups (ie: Qatar, Israel,, Saudi Arabia, and Iran), understanding the Qatari perspective on the 2022 World Cup controversy, the multipolar world and the rise of China and India, and much, much more!
Dr. Grace Hamman from Old Books With Grace joins Charity to take a closer look at the Middle Ages. Charity asks Grace what made her fall in love with this era. Charity also asks, "Did women write/illustrate books? What were some of the achievements of the Medieval period? How hard did peasants work? How are hospitals an especially Medieval achievement? Were manners invented in the Middle Ages?" They talk about how to see the era with "texture," to see the good and bad of this time, without imposing our own viewpoint. Do our children's books on the Middle Ages simply insert a modern person into a archaic situation--and it feels like a slap!?
