TV-SHOW DISCUSSION: Melvin and Daniel discuss the highly divisive new installment in the Masters of the Universe franchise. Topics: After restarting Arrested Development (again x16+), Melvin wonders what it would be like for the Russo brothers to return to comedy. Daniel imagines their return to the MCU for a Marvel Comedy procedural. Introducing Masters of the Universe: Revelation (S1E1-5) [8:38] Basically, Kevin Smith and his group of friends wrote/produced MotU:R and that got Daniel really interested Critics loved it. Fans hated it. We can't really explain these reasons without spoiling the show, but it's worth the discussion. Melvin wasn't totally on-board with MotU:R, but that's because he's growing tired of the "Reboot Template". Unpacking the controversial complicating incident for the season, and how not being invested in He-Man may be a benefit to the show. MotU:R raises the stakes and adds depth to its characters, something the original show never did. Daniel, on one reason critic reception can be so different than fan reception, "When you watch, like, 10 movies a week and you're watching all these shows, something that stands out is gonna really hit different." But, we're all guilty of going "back in my day!" with things we loved when growing up. Melvin, "Do you think it's, like, the comfortability of chasing identity that draws people in to be so angry about this stuff?"Sympathy for those who idolize things, acceptance that it's okay to not like things, but the importance of a reality check over what priorities take stock in our lives.Expanding on the "Reboot Template" and why Melvin is growing tired of it (Editor's Note: Melvin means Star Wars, not Star Trek: The Motion Picture, when talking about a movie shown in theaters, like, 7 years in a row)Are we interested in watching the rest of S1?Recommendations: Charles Hodge's 1 & 2 Corinthians: Geneva Commentary SeriesWrite a letter to someone important to you explaining why they're important to you, then call them and read it to them (Source for Inspiration)Amphibia (again, with new qualifiers) & What Remains of Edith FinchSupport on Patreon for Unique Perks!

Join hosts Chibbi and Rooster as we welcome Claude Cardona (she/ they) to the Words and Sh*t stage! Tune in to get to know the person behind the poetry! Claude Delfina Cardona is a poet born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. She received her BA from St. Mary's University and her MFA in Creative Writing from Texas State University. In 2013, she co-founded Chifladazine alongside Laura Valdez, a zine that highlights creative work by Latinas and Latinxs. In 2019, she co-founded Infrarrealista Review, a literary journal for all types of Texan writers, with Linda Rivas Vázquez. Cardona loves music and films as much as she loves poetry. She is an aspiring DJ and cultural critic. Winner of the Fall 2020 Host Publication Chap Book Prize, Claudia's book, WHAT REMAINS, is a collection of poems propelled by impulse, desire, and an ancestral sense of longing. These poems are experiential; they exist within the dark and splendid catacombs of the body, in dusty moonlit Texas nights, and invite us into their own glittery mythos of what it means to be a young woman falling in and out of love in San Antonio.
We rise to the podcast occasion to talk about the one thing that matters most: superhero movi— wait, no… video games! When we’re not criticizing the Snyder Cut and other assorted superhero fare, we’re checking out the newest brothers of Smash, fighting ancient gods in the Doom Eternal DLC, collecting our self-assigned walking sim homework, and oh so much more. In news: Squenix’s Balan Wonderworld seems to be in rough shape, and SIE CEO Jim Ryan thinks we shouldn’t worry ourselves about wanting to play old games, which is extremely distressing given the oncoming closure of the PS3, PSP, and PS Vita digital stores. But, hey, at least we’ll have these haunted PS1 demo discs to see us through. Games include Monster Hunter Rise; Super Smash Bros. Ultimate; Doom Eternal; Dr. Langeskov, The Tiger, and The Terribly Cursed Emerald: A Whirlwind Heist; What Remains of Edith Finch; Adios; Haunted PS1 Demo Disc 2021; Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury; and Super Mario Odyssey. Rabbi Steve Leder heads up one of the largest Jewish congregations in the country at the Wilshire Blvd Temple in LA. In his most recent book “The Beauty of What Remains”, he shares his thoughts on navigating grief and loss through the lens of not only a Rabbi who’s shepherded thousands of families through loss of their loved ones, but also as a son who recently lost his father after a 10 yr battle with Alzheimer’s. We had a really intimate conversation in which he answered a lot of my burning questions on death, dying and religion’s place in it, and he’s now my personal Rabbi. @steve_leder “The Beauty of What Remains” www.steveleder.com More at www.notimetowasteproject.com or follow @notimetowasteproject

According to Variety Magazine, “Jeff Russo understands how music can affect an audience. When music is employed, he sees it as an enhancement to character development, and is careful to create music that subtly flows with the action and visuals of the scene.”

Marni welcomes the inspirational author of several books, including his newest, How Our Greatest Fear Becomes Our Greatest Gift: The Beauty of What Remains, Rabbi Steve Leder. Rabbi Steve gets to the heart of what is truly valuable in life. He also dispels common myths we have about death and dying, Key takeaways from this episode: Without death what incentive is there to live? Common questions from people about death How to break dysfunctional generational patterns COVID’s dirty little secret The Beauty of What Remains [3:52] Rabbi Steve shares examples of questions from his congregation with regards to life and death. His advice, he says, is always the same. In death as in life. There is a myth we carry that death changes everything, or that impending death can erase dysfunctional tendencies. He feels obligated to manage members' expectations and let them know that people tend to die exactly the way they live. He says dying doesn't give anyone a new personality. Death changes everything and death changes nothing. If you have a tortured relationship with someone in life you are likely to feel relieved, not guilt when they die. It is cognitive dissonance. It is irreconcilable. And making peace with the fact that something can not be reconciled, is in itself a reconciliation. It is a resolution. An additional step, is you can interrupt the intergenerational transmission of the dysfunction - it's soothing to the soul by asking yourself ‘what is the legacy you want to leave?’. Moments that Matter [19:30] Rabbi Steve shares what he calls ‘the dirty little COVID secret’. It is that in some ways, COVID has made our lives better. He uses his life as an example. His life was unsustainable. He, like many other people, fell prey to the belief that a busy life was a meaningful life. The changes that were brought on to thwart the pandemic forced people to spend more time at home and build better relationships. The silver lining of the pandemic is that people don't have to wear uncomfortable clothes or spend time with people they don't care about at work. Rabbi Steve says, there is always a blessing in the darkness. If you have to go through hell, don't come out of it empty-handed. About the losses Rabbi Steve says, we all have lost our sense of invulnerability. We now realize how vulnerable we are. We have lost freedom, opportunities, and worst of all, we have lost the fundamental human need to hold and be held by the people we love. There is no reason to feel guilty that your life is more beautiful as a result of a painful experience. Death is the Great Teacher of Life [28:28] In the end, no one wants your physical crap. People spend so much of their lives working hard to make money to buy things and collect things that at the end of our lives, nobody wants. Goodwill won't even take half of your old stuff. Believing that our outer material life is our inner life or is a spiritual life is like trying to eat a picture of food. It won't nourish you. It's a mistake we are encouraged to make all day every day. Marni asks Rabbi Steve how people can realign with what is important. He responds, one simple way is to walk through the cemetery and read the headstones. Even though we are all unique and different, the inscription headstones are mostly the same. You have to strip away all the nonsense when you are inscribing someone's headstone. Family is listed on the headstone, not your zip code, not your salary, and not your resume. What matters is the quality of relationships with a tiny handful of people who really matter. Ask yourself, are you leading a meaningful life? How can one truly understand the depths of loss? Steve Leder is the senior rabbi of Wilshire Boulevard Temple in Los Angeles and although he has presided over thousands of funerals, it was the death of his own father that initiated a deeper understanding of grief and loss. Today he shares his journey and discusses how the “moments” are what matter most. After receiving his degree in writing and graduating cum laude from Northwestern University, and spending time studying at Trinity College, Oxford University, Leder received a master's degree in Hebrew letters in 1986 and rabbinical ordination in 1987 from Hebrew Union College. He is the author of the new book: The Beauty of What Remains. Info: http://steveleder.com/

My guest today is Chris Bell, a game designer with a remarkable CV that includes thatgamecompany's Journey and the upcoming Sky, What Remains of Edith Finch, Way and 12 Minutes. As well as being an incredible designer Chris is also filled with stories. We talk growing up in Boston playing games in the Pala, that time he kicked a TV off the wall emulating the Power Rangers, joining a Jewish Fraternity in University (the token Catholic) and giving video game presentations to his fraternity brothers, his time as a professional Counter Strike player and the incredible saga of Leaping Lizzie rare spawns in Final Fantasy 11.We also hit on him being headhunted by EA, the Edith Finch pitch that led to him becoming the lead designer, how navigating a Japanese fish market gave him the inspiration for his first game, the joy of coming to a game with no prior knowledge, and the time he spent living at Will Wright’s house."I think he'd already made up his mind. That's what I want to remember about my brother. The day he made up his mind to fly... and he did. It's a must-read that every person, religious and non-religious, should buy and peruse every night before bed. It'll make you think harder, pray more ardently, and understand your civilization better." — Ben Shapiro, host of "The Ben Shapiro Show""Dennis Prager’s commentary on Exodus will rank among the greatest modern Torah commentaries. That is how important I think it is. And I am clearly not alone... It might well be on its way to becoming the most widely read Torah commentary of our time—and by non-Jews as well as by Jews." — Rabbi Joseph Telushkin, bestselling author of Jewish LiteracyWhy do so many people think the Bible, the most influential book in world history, is outdated? Why do our friends and neighbors – and sometimes we ourselves – dismiss the Bible as irrelevant, irrational, immoral, or all of these things? This explanation of the Book of Exodus, the second book of the Bible, will demonstrate that the Bible is not only powerfully relevant to today’s issues, but completely consistent with rational thought.Do you think the Bible permitted the trans-Atlantic slave trade? You won’t after reading this book.Do you struggle to love your parents? If you do, you need this book.Do you doubt the existence of God because belief in God is “irrational?” This book will give you reason after reason to rethink your doubts. The title of this commentary is, “The Rational Bible” because its approach is entirely reason-based. The reader is never asked to accept anything on faith alone. As Prager says, “If something I write does not make rational sense, I have not done my job.”The Rational Bible is the fruit of Dennis Prager’s forty years of teaching the Bible to people of every faith, and no faith. On virtually every page, you will discover how the text relates to the contemporary world and to your life. His goal: to change your mind – and then change your life. The Bible remains profoundly relevant—both to the great issues of our day and to each individual life. It is the greatest moral guide and source of wisdom ever written.Do you doubt the existence of God because you think believing in God is irrational? This book will give you many reasons to rethink your doubts. Do you think faith and science are in conflict? You won’t after reading this commentary on Genesis. Do you come from a dysfunctional family? It may comfort you to know that every family discussed in Genesis was highly dysfunctional! The title of this commentary is “The Rational Bible” because its approach is entirely reason-based. The reader is never asked to accept anything on faith alone. In Dennis Prager’s words, “If something I write is not rational, I have not done my job.”The Rational Bible is the fruit of Dennis Prager’s forty years of teaching the Bible—whose Hebrew grammar and vocabulary he has mastered—to people of every faith and no faith at all. Rdeacon: My question.. do you feel there is a line that games cross that makes them too real? This could be the chores in Zelda/Red Dead, disturbing realistic graphics or even games that give you morality consequences that diminish feel of the game. JoeColeslaw: Happy new year! Glad to be back! So question, - how competitive are you with leaderboards in games? How about gamerscore, trophies, and achievements? - Since you are answering questions all willy nilly... I had another question as far as the Lucas Film Games / Indiana Jones news... -Is it almost too late for Indiana Jones? For some reason, "from Russia with Love" comes to mind. I played it as a kid, but I don't know why... not like I had nostalgia for the film... but was a fan of the 007 series. Maybe this would be along the lines of their previous game, 2003- Emperors Tomb, stand-alone. Or coinciding with a new, movie. Elfsawrath52: Where’s the best place to put a Buttloadda stickers? ARIES RISING! This week I welcome Kyle aka @therealhousewivesorders We jump right in and start talking about his book club and his awesome live reading of Gizelle's book on IG live (I would listen to him read a menu) and reading Carole Radziwill's book "What Remains" and the STARK differences of the two housewife books (including the audio readings.) Then we talk about learning how to appreciate our housewife villains and what they bring to the show (looking at you Kenya Moore) and how our minds will allow us to believe what we want to believe because we want to believe it, especially when it comes to our housewives which brings us to RHOP and Candiace Dillard and the housewife world's seeming hatred of her. We talk about the current climate we are in and the way people treat Candiace who IS a black woman, the excuses that are made for Ashley Darby and her behavior (which has been in the lower level at Ramona's home her entire time on the show), the butter knife toss heard round' the world and the way people love Porsha Williams despite her anti LGBTQ sermon (which she has apologized for via PR statement) but refuse to forgive Candiace for her tweets (that she also apologized for via PR statement) and the hypocrisy of not keeping the same energy. And we talk about Monique and her friendships on the show and their interactions (Monique & Charrisse, and Monique & Candiace and wishing they were still friends.) Then we get into the RHOP IG lives that were like soap operas and how Candiace and Monique were actually saying the same things and we wonder if you need a witness or letter from someone to get a cease and desist served to someone or to file charges on someone (per a scene from Teen Mom, you may not.)Then Kyle gives his experience working in the beauty world and what possibly could have happened with Gizelle's Every Hue beauty (possibly), we talk about his love for Danica from VPR and Scheana's latest (at the time of this recording) podcast episode and the icky tea that was spilled, and Danica's vitamin recommendation that actually works! And we end with Kyle talking about Married to Medicine and our hope that the world gets on board! Then I give my housewives tag line and we solicit dm's with tag line ideas for Kyle!Asking Kyle to be a guest is one of the best orders I have made, and Kyle is a dish that I will continue to order!
