Hal Herring [50:31] has been reporting on conservation issues in the American West for over 30 years for Field & Stream magazine as well as other publications.  In this week's podcast, he explores the many complexities of trying to keep enough water in our rivers for both agriculture and trout populations, which has become an increasingly difficult juggling act.  Hal also gently berates today's hunters and anglers about educating themselves on the science and the politics behind these issues.  It's not enough to just complain about the lack of water—it's important to understand the issue before you can have a credible  opinion.   In the Fly Box this week, we have some great tips and questions, including: Do bamboo and fiberglass rods load differently than graphite rods? When you have a very limited time on a river, do you have a fishing method that gives you the most bang for your buck? Is there an alternative to the "chuck and duck" method for fishing for salmon and steelhead on Michigan rivers? If you are buying older fly tying material, what should you look for to make sure it has not been degraded? How would you adjust your fly selection for smallmouth bass throughout the season? Is rising or falling water better on a fluctuating tailwater? Can I use my 10-foot, 8-weight rod in the surf?   If my Mop flies have fallen apart, can I easily add a new piece of mop material to the hook and bead?  I am not a fly tier. Are two three-turn whip finishes better than a single 6-turn whip finish?   A tip that textured lines in a long day of stripping flies can cut into your fingers Is the San Juan Shuffle ethical? Is a fast action 5-weight rod actually a 6-weight? I have been lipping bass for many years.  Why do you say it's bad for the fish?

MITCH MALLOY RETURNS WITH NEW SOLO ALBUM, ‘THE LAST SONG' FROM SING MARKET Mitch Malloy continues to rock the night away burning the midnight oil! After several years as the frontman for the iconic rock band Great White, Mitch returned to the studio writing and recording his new album, ‘THE LAST SONG.' The album will launch with an exclusive, limited release collector's edition vinyl through a partnership with SING. Pre-sales for the vinyl release will go on sale May 3, 2023. An international release will follow in June. Once again, Mitch is undertaking an album solely by himself from start to finish – song writing, producing, instruments, mixing and mastering. Mitch reveals, “For this record, I have really taken my time. In the past, I've usually been on deadlines. With this album, there was so much material in my head from a few years of not having a true creative outlet, so it was a lot to process. I'm thankful that I have been in a position to not rush my creativity. I've been tucked away in my Zen zone writing and recording... and amassing lots of new gear! Ha!” ‘THE LAST SONG' DELUXE PACKAGE will be released worldwide first on SING Market as a limited edition collectible 180 gram signed and numbered white vinyl record. This special vinyl bundle includes a signed CD, large poster, 8" X 10" photo, and more. All of this is attached to a limited, numbered and registered digital collectable bundle packed with behind-the-scenes videos, acoustic videos, a rare handwritten lyric sheet, and a Golden Ticket contest to win a private zoom concert where you hang with Mitch! After this very limited vinyl - digital collectable VIP bundle is gone - it's gone! Follow this link to purchase: https://market.singidea.com/market/asset/2abdeae1-ddbf-4d97-bd7a-8d345422ec0a/ Unboxing video here: https://vimeo.com/823080034?share=copy/ In addition to being an artist, Mitch is no stranger to the studio, and has worked with a variety of artists, labels, and brands from Taylor Swift, Boys Like Girls, Kenny Loggins, Craig Morgan, and Sony Music NY, to singer/songwriters Victoria Show, Gary Burr and Billy Falcon, and even voiceover work for Outdoor Channel, Field & Stream and many more. Mitch has even been the voice for Starburst candy! Mitch is also an award-winning songwriter, and has written with legendary songwriters like Jim Weatherly, Richard Lee, Mike Reid, Desmond Child, Dennis Morgan, Victoria Shaw and Gray Burr. He's been signed to publishing deals with Warner Chappell and Chrysalis Music, but later launched his own publishing company to control his copyrights. Mitch loves the craft of songwriting... telling a story and resonating with his audience. "Songs are so powerful... it's amazing just how much a song can impact a person's life," says Malloy. “Once again, life has delivered a lot of new material... from losing family members, to moving to the beach, to having a teenager. There's definitely no shortage of inspiration!” Mitch's tenure as an artist has spanned several decades beginning as a regular on the New York music scene in the 80s. Mitch soon garnered a major recording deal with RCA/BMG Worldwide, and achieved success on the pop and rock charts, landed a coveted spot on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and has toured globally. Mitch's voice has been highly sought after as a frontman for legendary acts as well as a guest vocalist on other artists' projects. In the mid-90s, Mitch was asked to replace Sammy Hagar as lead singer for Van Halen. But after spending time and recording with the band he declined. “When the band appeared on the MTV Music Awards with Dave [David Lee Roth], the fans expected his return – I expected his return. I felt as cool as the opportunity was, it just wasn't the right time,” said Malloy. Lastly, if you miss out on the SING Market bundles, ‘THE LAST SONG' CD (alone) will be available in the US on Malloy's label, Godsend Records, and internationally by Cargo Records based in the UK. Mitch looks forward to getting back out on the road and connecting with his fans in person. So, will this be the last song? According to Mitch, “Give it a listen, and you tell me!” “My hope with ‘The Last Song' record is that when listening you will experience some of the experiences and feelings and emotions I had while making it. If that happens then the world is a better place through music. And as always, I gave it everything I had. Crank it and enjoy!” https://www.youtube.com/@mitchmalloy3468/ https://www.facebook.com/MitchMalloyMusic/ https://www.mitchmalloy.com/ https://twitter.com/mitchmalloy/ https://www.instagram.com/malloymitch/ singmarket.com/ Subscribe to Pat's Soundbytes Unplugged Podcast, Pat's Soundbytes IGTV and Pat's Soundbytes Unplugged - Podcast Radio Show on YouTube for all the interviews and incredible content. It is also an episode that hits all the marks, as we talk about the gear, technique, science, ethics, and passion of photography―in this case, centered on fly fishing photography. Our guests, Jess McGlothlin and Toby Nolan bring all of the above, and a ton of experience, as we flow like a river through this hour-long conversation.   Jess McGlothlin is based in Missoula, Montana, but has photographed from the Arctic Circle to the Peruvian Amazon. Her story-telling approach, often coupled with her own writing, has found a home in a range of genres and formats, from commercial to documentary. Her credit list includes brands like Patagonia and YETI Coolers and publications such as Field & Stream, The New York Times, Men's Journal, and Southern Culture on the Fly.   Toby Nolan was born in Dublin, Ireland, bases his fishing and outdoor sports photography in Bend, Oregon and travels the globe for assignments. His editorial work can be found in The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, The FlyFish Journal, and The Drake Magazine. His commercial clients include Under Armor, Ironman Triathlons, and Travel Nevada.   Did you know that Billingham camera bags developed from bags made for anglers? And today's talk runs the gamut, discussing the unique aspects of fly-fishing photography, and a diverse set of tools from brands like Canon, Aquatech, and DJI.   Guests: Toby Nolan and Jess McGlothlin Photograph © Toby Nolan

Gary Roberson is a native of Medina County and grew up hunting on the family ranch between Devine and Yancey. Armed with a Model 94 Winchester, Roberson killed his first whitetail while hunting by himself at age seven and began calling critters when he was ten years old. After fifteen years in the banking industry, Roberson decided that he would rather chase four legged coyotes than two legged ones, so he and his wife Deb purchased Burnham Brothers Game Calls in 1991.While Gary has hunted and outfitted for whitetail deer, elk, turkey, and mule deer, he considers chasing mountain lions with hounds and calling coyotes his favorite hunting opportunities. His calling expertise has been well documented in outdoor magazines such as Outdoor Life, Field & Stream, Predator Extreme, and numerous TV shows. In 1992, Roberson produced “Calling All Varmints”, a “how to” video on calling predators, and collaborated with Mossy Oak to produce “Eyes Front”, a series of five calling videos. In 2006, Gary and longtime friend, Brian Hawkins produced “Catastrophic”, the most popular predator calling video of all time.Roberson worked with Savage Arms to develop the MODEL 10 PREDATOR HUNTER, Ruger in designing their line of predator rifles and with Nikon Sport Optics to produce the COYOTE SPECIAL riflescope, products specific for the predator calling game.Roberson is host of the wildly successful TV show “Carnivore”, which is airing for its eleventh season on Pursuit Channel. Because I like to keep it as unbiased as possible when we think about how we should be prepared for this kind of situations which are become more practical than anyone ever imagined let's start by looking at the facts, dive into the recent press releases, and then I promise at the end I will let you know where I stand and why. You bet it's going to be a rocky conversation, but I bet you don't guess how it ends, I think you're going to be surprised... The Numbers: 27 .     The number of active shooter incidents in 2018 38 .     The number already in 2019 through August 16 .     The number of states that had incidents 85 .    The number of people who lost their lives in these shootings (excluding scumbags whose names you won't hear on this blog) 128 .   The number of wounded in these crimes 27 .     The number of shooters; 23 male, 3 female, 1 at large 10 .     The number of shooters that took a cowardice exit 11 .     The number that were taken in by the  good guys (4 of them were held by armed citizens and 3 by unarmed citizens until authorities arrived) 4 .      The number that committed suicide by cop 1 .       Killed by a concerned armed citizen. 4 .     The number of active shooters in California, the state with the most in 2018 5 .      The number of active shooter situations that were stopped by citizen involvement. 22%   The percent of the time a rifle was present   Citizen Intervention In three incidents, unarmed citizens confronted the shooter, thereby ending the shooting. In one incident, a citizen wrestled the gun away from the shooter. The shooter fled the scene and was apprehended approximately 34 hours later at another location. In one incident, citizens confronted the shooter (including one who was pistol-whipped by the shooter), allowing others to flee the scene. The shooter committed suicide at the scene before law enforcement arrived. In one incident, a teacher wrestled the shooter to the ground and restrained him until law enforcement arrived and apprehended him. In two incidents, armed citizens possessing valid firearms permits exchanged gunfire with the shooter. In one incident, two citizens retrieved their guns from their respective vehicles, then shot and killed the shooter. In one incident, a citizen armed with a gun confronted the shooter, but no gunfire was exchanged. A second citizen exchanged gunfire with the shooter, but neither was struck. The shooter fled the scene and was apprehended by law enforcement a short time later at another location. Locations 16 .  Occurred in Business locations 5 .    Occurred in Education Settings 2 .    Were in open spaces 2 .    Healthcare facilities 1 .    Government property 1 .    House of worship The Announcements Government On the last day of August 2019, the day after the Odessa, TX shootings, New law went into effect in Texas that changed the way you can carry a gun in the state: You can now carry in places of worship Can no longer prohibit renters from having firearms Now you can keep your firearm concealed in your car at school No laws will be inforced on CCW when evacuating or returning to a disaster Disaster shelters will now allow you to bring them in If you are caught with a CCW and you did not know that the area prohibited concealed carry, if you're asked to leave and you do then there is no crime. Overall, Texas sees the issue as not enough guns in the right places at the right time. Big Business Walmart announced that it will discontinue selling ammunition in .223, .556, and .22 calibers. They view these calibers as the primary for assault-style weapons and want to distance themselves from the murders. They also joining Kroger, Dicks Sporting Goods, Starbucks, Target and Wendy's in asking that people not open carry in their stores even if they have the right to. Today, open carry is only banned in California, Florida, Illinois and DC. Lastly they are pulling handguns from the only state they sell them in today which is Alaska. 20% .    Percent of the ammunition sold in the US that is sold by Walmart 6% .      Percent of the ammunition Walmart wants to sell in 2020 by eliminating rifle calibers 2% .     Percent of US gun sales done at a Walmart Much of this is spurred by liability costs as in The Estate of Maurice Stallard v Kroeger. In this instance, the daughter of the deceased is suiting the store for letting guns into it and asking that they ban guns at all stores. Kroeger responded by asking that customers don't open carry. Kroeger stopped the sale of all firearms in their 45 Meyers stores as well. When Dick's Sporting Goods realized that the Parkland, FL shooter who killed 17 purchased his gun from one of their stores, they started pulling guns from 10 of theris stores as a pilot which cost them $150MM. Despite that, their stocks are up 4% and they are looking to remove guns from 135 of their 730 stores by the end of the year. They also instituted a policy to only sell to those 21 and over which is quickly becoming standard amongst big box stores including Dick's owned Field & Stream locations. Outside influence on Big Box Camping World, owner of Gander (Formerly Gander Mountain), who is focused on selling RV's and Campers also sells firearms. The Sofware giant SalesForce had been toting doing an implementation at Camping World and had asked that Camping World change their stance on selling firearms. Camping World has not budged, but they are also no longer listed as a customer of SalesForce. Season 2, Episode 3 - John Snow – Shooting Editor for Field & Stream and Outdoor Life Steve and Jodi travel to the 2019 SHOT (Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoor Trade) Show and spend time Talking Mule Deer with the shooting editor for Field & Stream and Outdoor Life, John Snow. John describes how he didn’t grow up in a hunting family but traipsed the woods near his house with a BB gun as a latchkey kid and built a love for shooting and hunting. He tells us that his knowledge of shooting and ammunition started with a fascination for ballistics tables – and the help of an unknown shooter that helped him realize that his lack of shooting skill at the time was due to his cross-eye dominance. After working as a traditional journalist for years, and then with a small regional outdoor publication, John started at Outdoor Life in 2001 and made it his mission to pester then-shooting editor, Jim Carmichael. With no better mentor to learn from, John absorbed as much knowledge and skill as possible and became only the fifth shooting editor in Outdoor Life’s more than 120-year history when Carmichael retired, adding the same title for Field & Stream last year. John tells us about the limited edition Weatherby .257 he used on a mule deer hunt in southeast Montana this fall – a rifle and hunt that will be up for auction during the Friday night Conservation Banquet at the Western Hunting & Conservation Expo. Finally, we ask John to tell us about some of the new products and trends he is seeing at SHOT Show and how they will help western hunters.

More than 2 million Americans have served in Afghanistan or Iraq since September 11, 2001, and C.J. Chivers has reported from both wars from their beginnings. The Fighters vividly conveys the physical and emotional experience of war as lived by six combatants: a fighter pilot, a medic, a scout helicopter pilot, a grunt, an infantry officer and a Special Forces sergeant. Chivers captures their commitment and sense of purpose, their courage and ultimately their sacrifice, confusion and moral frustration as new enemies arise, and invasions give way to counterinsurgency duties for which they often were not prepared. The Fighters is a tour de force, a portrait of modern warfare that parts from slogans. It does for these troops what Stephen Ambrose did for the G.I.s of WWII and what Michael Herr did for the grunts in Vietnam. The Fighters presents a human side of the long arc of two wars, told with the empathy and understanding of an author who is himself an infantry veteran. C.J. Chivers is a reporter for The New York Times, where he works on the Investigations Desk and for The New York Times Magazine, covering conflict, crime, the arms trade and human rights, and other themes. His work also appears on the NYT’s At War and Lens blogs. He is a frequent contributor to Esquire and an occasional contributor to other publications, including Field & Stream, Popular Mechanics, Anglers Journal and more.  He is also the author of THE GUN (Simon & Schuster, 2010), a history of automatic arms and their influence on human security and war. The book was selected as a New York Times Editor’s Pick and a Best Book of 2010 by The Atlantic and The Washington Post.

This week’s guest is Joe Cermele, fishing editor of Field & Stream magazine and the one-man-band behind the terrific web series “Hook Shots” (if you have not seen his videos they are always fun and offbeat). Joe is wild about fishing big flies for big fish—regardless of species. Our interview is about mousing for trout, a sorta-night-fishing, sorta-streamer-fishing technique that has become popular in recent years. But it’s not about fishing mouse flies for wilderness fish in Alaska or Kamchatka, it’s about fishing them in local, heavily fished rivers. Mousing is a great way to avoid the crowds and catch one of those big trout you seldom see during the day. As usual in The Fly Box we have a wide variety of topics: missing strikes on topwater bass flies, the difference between a desiccant and a flotant (again!), finding tailing carp, fishing streamers and high-stick nymphing in spring creeks, fishing bamboo rods for larger trout, tying with peacock eyes, questions on rod models, when to buy multiple reels as opposed to one reel and an extra spool, trout that disappear in early spring, correct depth for setting your indicator (there isn’t one), deciding which fly-tying tools to put most of your budget into—and finally what is that white rod Pete Kutzer uses for his casting videos?

Series Finale! We talk to Dan Infalt, the "Big Buck Serial Killer" from Wisconsin and a Michigan legend John Eberhart about their unique scent control tactics. We interviewed these guys separately and have combined the interviews into a 3-part series. Both hunters have had tremendous success hunting mature bucks on public land. They don't pull any punches when it comes to comparing their scent control tactics and how they differ. Dan Infalt Dan grew up and has lived in SE Wisconsin his whole life. He was the youngest of 11 children. Because he grew up without much money, hunting, fishing, trapping, and gathering were more of a way to survive than a hobby. Dan now works as a Prototype machinist. On the side he teaches workshops where he shares his personal scouting and hunting tactics, showing students the properties he hunts while examining some of his most successful set-ups on mature whitetail deer. Dan and his tactics have been featured in many magazines, such as Field & Stream, Deer & Deer Hunting, North American Whitetail, and more. His scouting and hunting tactic videos have helped countless hunters revolutionize the way the chase mature whitetails. He has taken well over 30 Pope and Young quality deer over the years, mostly on heavily pressured public land. He doesn’t like hunting by or supporting their strict guidelines, so you won’t find most of them in any record books. John Eberhart John currently has 30 bucks listed in the Commemorative Bucks of Michigan record book and they came off 19 different properties in 10 different counties with many coming from public land. He took the Michigan state record muzzleloader buck in 1981 from public land and that has been the only state record buck to come off state land. In 1997, he began bowhunting out of state, during Michigan’s gun season and to date has taken 19 P&Y class bucks on his 21 week long out of state hunts. John along with his son Chris has written 3 books on hunting pressured whitetails and he has written instructional bowhunting articles for Deer & Deer Hunting, Peterson’s Bowhunting, Bowhunting World, & many more. Part 2 of 3- This project has been in the works for months! He has also produced instructional DVDs on his hunting and scouting techniques. Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of actual, working caricaturists gathered here for their annual convention… in the NEW new media capital of the world, St. Petersburg, Florida! Drew Friedman is BETTER than Picasso! So says Howard Stern, and who is Mr. Media to argue with the King of All Media? Drew is the king of modern caricaturists. His work has been featured on almost every major American magazine, from The New York Times and MAD to Entertainment Weekly and Field & Stream. DREW FRIEDMAN audio excerpt: "Howard Stern -- the uglier, more disgusting I draw him, the more he likes me." In recent years, he has turned much of his attention capturing a generation of sometimes unheralded entertainers: Old Jewish Comedians. In fact, it’s become virtually a brand for Drew, starting with his first collection, Old Jewish Comedians, then his second, More Old Jewish Comedians, and now his third, Even More Old Jewish Comedians. Who knew there were so many Old Jewish Comedians? Is there any chance he’s making some of these people up as he goes? Who knows? Who cares – it’s funny and the artwork is impeccable. Today we’re meeting in person at the TradeWinds Resort in beautiful St. Pete Beach, Florida, where Drew is the keynote speaker at the International Society of Caricature Artists annual convention. We’ll use that as an excuse to talk about craft. A very special feature of the video of this interview is a 17-minute, over-the-shoulder demonstration of Drew Friedman's caricature technique, as he draws me and then a real celebrity, Robert Crumb. Recorded June 19, 2015 at Stockholm Studios in Bushwick, Brooklyn Ralph Smith went to RIT with Tom, so I'd met him a few times over the year. He was PDN 30 in 2014 and he's photographed for Sotheby's, Food Network Magazine, Field & Stream, Conde Naste Traveler, among several others. His still life photographs are meticulously lit, playful and colorful. He works in a part of photoland that I don't know much about so I was curious to see what he had to say about hustling as a photographer. He also happens to be a fellow Minnesotan so it was nice relate from that perspective as well. He brought some interesting books as well, which we've come to expect, but it's always interesting to see the combinations. In this episode we get Duane Michels, Trevor Paglen, Star Wars and John Pfahl. I have a new appreciation for Michels after viewing his skewering of the photo world. I started to wonder if this podcast was satire? What would Duane Michels say about a photobook podcast? I don't want to know the answer.  Enjoy! Photobooks/Photography Discussed

This summer, Trout Unlimited partnered with Field & Stream to showcase the Best Wild Places in America. The tour highlights six spots out West where people can experience some of the best hunting and fishing and most spectacular wilderness in the country. By fishing and hunting in these places, the goal is to inspire people to visit these places--all of which are located on public land. Also, we hope to raise awareness about how special these places are so that they may receive the protection they deserve. Each one of the places on the tour faces some threat--development, energy disputes, or other threats that has the potential to rob future generations from the chance to experience the landscapes and wildlife. In this podcast, TU's President and CEO, Chris Wood, talks with Chris Hunt, of TU's Sportsmen's Conservation Project, about the tour.
