If you read a highlight reel of Gary Brackett’s career, you would likely assume that he was met with little challenge. Gary was a 2x MVP at Rutgers, won a Super Bowl, was captain of the Colts for five years, and now runs a successful restaurant franchise, Stacked Pickle. However, the theme of his story is instead a constant pursuit through adversity. Gary’s parents refinanced their home twice to pay for him to be the first college graduate in the family. When they called to inform him they could no longer afford Rutgers, he successfully negotiated a scholarship with the football coach. Starting that moment, he worked hard to be more than a walk on player. He quickly became starter and 2X MVP. From Rutgers, he climbed from 4th-string-free-agent at the Colts to five-year captain, all while managing three significant family deaths in 16 months. Gary was enjoying retirement from nine years in the NFL when his daughter presented another challenge: “What are you going to be when you grow up?" He decided to attend George Washington University to earn an executive MBA, and entered into a partnership with the previous owner of Stacked Pickle in 2011. By 2013, he purchased the company and grew it to currently ten locations with seven franchises. Drink deep of the culture that surrounds you with Gary Brackett from the Stacked Pickle. Gary Brackett, a key part of the Colts' Super Bowl championship team in 2012, was a walk-on player at Rutgers University and wasn't drafted by an NFL team, forcing him to fight for a spot on the Indianapolis Colts. Along the way, he lost both his parents and his brother and wrote a book about his story. Now he's raising money to turn the book into a movie—in part by soliciting money privately but also through the crowd-funding platform Wefunder. He already has a trailer (brackett.movie) as well as a 30-minute, abbreviated version of the film meant to persuade potential investors to get involved. Brackett talks with podcast host Mason King about the challenges of making a movie, why he thinks he has a good story to tell and why he's not just funding the movie's $2.2 million to $2.5 million budget. To read more about Brackett's movie effort, read IBJ reporter Susan Orr's story here. The IBJ Podcast is brought to you by the law firm Krieg DeVault.

Gary Brackett (@GaryBrackett58) is most widely recognized as the starting linebacker of the Indianapolis Colts Super Bowl Championship team. Since then, he has become the CEO of Brackett Restaurant Group and Stacked Pickle Restaurant Franchise. Gary has learned many unique lessons from his athletic career that have transferred over to his business success. One of his football mentors taught him “the speed of the leader determines the rate of the pack.” As a CEO, this continues to resonate with him. It’s taught him he can’t be demanding of his team if he’s not demanding of himself. For him, he’s realized that real leaders get respect by fighting alongside their troops, not sitting back at headquarters. If you want to build a strong culture, you need to be willing to get in the trenches. Doing this communicates to your team that you believe the work is important, so it should be important to them as well.
Key Takeaways: The first step is thinking of yourself as the person you want to be. Picturing success is the first step in being it. Consider going to business for yourself but not by yourself. Gary Brackett is a former NFL linebacker for the Indianapolis Colts. From his days at earning a spot at Rutgers as a walk-on, to winning a Super Bowl, Gary has always had a "walk-on mentality." He was revered in Indianapolis for his workman-like qualities on and off the football field. Now Brackett is in the second phase of his career (or as his son said, his grown-up job): an entrepreneur; growing and expanding his franchise restaurant, The Stacked Pickle, to several cities in the United States. Gary also wanted to give away a signed copy of his book, "Winning." Just visit: https://www.facebook.com/startedup and leave a comment under the Gary Brackett podcast announcement.
Truth You Can Act On: Foster Organizational “Beta” Mode: Far too often, employees fall into the trap of saying, “that’s how it’s always been done.” Each individual brings unique insights and dynamics to your business - inspire them to think outside the box in the name of improving and advancing your organization. It’s Not All About Money: Rewarding great work with additional compensation and bonuses never hurts, but don’t get caught up in thinking that more money equals a more engaged workforce. Find out what incentives hit home with each employee - flexible schedule, time-off, career advancement - to help foster their work/life balance. Get Everyone on The Same Page: Yes, it’s expensive to continuously train employees. It’s even more costly to hire new ones. Foster emotional ownership from your staff to your business by investing in their success. Don’t simply make employees aware of best practices - encourage dialogue and feedback as a catalyst to develop better systems. Mind The Generational Gap: In our fast-paced world, Millennials are often spending shorter amounts of time with a single employer. Use this understanding of generational turnover to retain talent by connecting your work to the long-term goals and ambitions of these employees. Gary Brackett is the President & CEO of Brackett Restaurant Group, a food service catering company that also includes two restaurant brands: CharBlue Steak & Seafood fine dining and Stacked Pickle casual dining. Prior to founding Brackett Restaurant Group, Gary was a linebacker for the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League. During his time with the Colts, he served as defensive captain, was a starter in their Super Bowl XLI win over the Chicago Bears, and earned the title of defensive MVP for the team. After retiring from the Colts in 2010, Brackett went on to serve as a sports commentator, which he still does in addition to his role at Brackett Restaurant Group. Disclaimer: Gary Brackett is a client of the Law Office of Josh F. Brown. Both parties willingly participated in the interview with no incentive and strive to tell Gary’s fascinating story and highlight his brand in an impartial way. Key Takeaways: [0:22] Today’s episode features Gary Brackett, a former NFL player turned franchisor who owns Brackett Restaurant Group. Within that company, he founded Stacked Pickle, a casual dining franchise that has taken off in the Midwest and is looking to expand nationally. [2:28] Josh welcomes Gary to Franchise Euphoria. [3:15] Gary Brackett is a New Jersey native who has climbed the ranks in all aspects of life with his unwavering work ethic. [13:04] For individuals lucky enough to break into pro-sports, they sometimes achieve success and get “lazy” but Gary has always had a strong drive to continually set goals and achieve them. [16:05] Gary semi-knew that once he retired from football he wanted to do something in the restaurant space and make a quality investment. [17:26] While Gary considers himself a foodie, what really got him into the restaurant business was the recognition that people always approached him while he was out to eat. To maintain his brand, he started his company where he hoped people would come for his name but stay for the food. [18:45] It has been helpful for Gary having a hand in two different types of restaurant spaces to give him exposure to how to run each system to its greatest potential. [20:24] It has been a fruitful partnership with Jeremiah Hamman in running CharBlue since Hamman has a lifetime of experience in the food service industry and Brackett has the organizational tactics and pursuance to get a well-oiled, organized system. [21:57] One big way Stacked Pickle makes itself stand out as a franchise is offering low rates for those looking to purchase a franchise. The way he does this is helping his franchisees find quality, second-generation locations to build out of to keep things cost effective. [22:40] Another way Stacked Pickle stands out is by having a value-priced menu for a quality product. [24:01] Gary has found that the work ethic he developed in the NFL has transferred over to the restaurant industry. The desire to never wanting to settle for being average fuels his drive and keeps his business on a positive growth trajectory. [25:40] A large challenge Gary faces in the restaurant industry is the competition; new restaurants are popping up every day, so they have to be creative in their promotional endeavors. [28:11] Gary’s large goal for Stacked Pickle is to grow 5-10 stores a year for the next 3-4 years, but he aims to obtain quality franchisees and be able to methodically plan out their success with them. [29:28] To learn more about the Stacked Pickle franchise, head over to www.Stackedpickle.com or www.BuildthePickle.com. Additionally, Gary’s book about how to build a championship restaurant is due out in the next six months. Gary Brackett, Super Bowl-winning NFL linebacker, founder, and entrepreneur joins The Brink of Midnight Podcast with John Brenkus. Most people know Gary Brackett as being an absolute force on the football field. As one of the smaller, lighter linebackers in NFL history, Gary's game was different. He rose to every occasion by being elusive, forcing mistakes, getting to the football...and it helped him become second in the ACC in tackles as well as help the Indianapolis Colts win a Super Bowl. There is much of Gary's story and the challenges he faced, however, that people don't know, and that is where we really dive in during this conversation. Gary walked on to the Rutgers University football team, and only after not being able to afford tuition anymore did they offer him a scholarship. Never to take an opportunity for granted, he rose to become captain and MVP of the defensive team. The next hurdle came when he went un-drafted. The Colts eventually gave him shot. The next series of crushing news came in the span of 18 months when he lost his father, mother, and brother. Circumstances that could have destroyed anyone helped Gary turn extreme loss at the young age of 23 into the foundation of his strength and resilience. He developed the idea that "how you honor the dead is how you live your life." Football became his sanctuary. Playing the game helped him express how he intended to live and honor his family. Gary asks us all to consider what bargain we want to make with life and powerfully suggests we all write our obituaries so we are in touch with the legacy we want to leave behind. Everything Gary does is about legacy, from football to how he currently gives back to his community through mentoring, jobs, and professional development. Now owned by former Indianapolis Colts LB great, and Super Bowl Captain, Gary Brackett, The Stacked Pickle is becoming more popular than ever. The boys had the pleasure of spending an evening at The Stacked Pickle in Fishers, IN a few weeks ago. The first half of the show they were joined by the Pickle's Assistant GM, Bryce Gerlitz, who told us a little of the history behind the Pickle as well as the many things available for its hungry and thirsty patrons. The second half of the show the boys were joined by local comedian, Sam Loyd, and straight out of the Pig Pen, Clark Myers. The second half is a free for all as they enjoyed some splendid Bulleit Bourbon cocktails brought to us by a couple, very lovely, Bulleit Bourbon reps, whom we hope to have on the show very soon. We review a few of the many fine craft beers available at the Pickle, get into a little whiskey & scotch discussion, some Bulleit Bourbon history, and Jordan gives away his not-no-secret Bloody Mary recipe. Grab a cold one and tune into hear about the many great daily specials available, from special prices on burgers, wings, and pints, to the live music and trivia. Looking for a place to bring the whole family and enjoy the games during this football season? “It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.” – Confucius Former NFL linebacker, Indianapolis Colt, and Superbowl champion Gary Brackett (@GaryBrackett58) is almost superhuman. After our conversation, I was convinced that he's not made of the same material as you and I. Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy mentions in the forward of Gary's book, Winning, that you might pass Gary in the supermarket, and not realize he's an NFL player. However, minutes into sitting down with him I realized he's much more than that. Inevitably, football came up as part of the conversation. I asked if he missed it and he raised his right hand pointing to a scar. Nervously, I asked where the scar came from to which he replied, "I broke it during the first half of the Super Bowl." As the story goes, after some tape, conditioning, and help from the training staff at halftime, he later went on to play the second half of that game- basically one handed. After talking with him for a few minutes, I realized this was his mantra. This is just another example of his grit. For those who don't know him, Gary was a walk-on to the Rutgers University football team. By his senior year of college he was captain of the defensive team and was awarded the team’s defensive MVP honors award. He went on to winning this award twice-a feat only attained by one other alumni at the school. In 2003, he was signed by the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent. Three years later, he was named the team’s defensive captain and brought the Indianapolis Colts to a title championship in 2007. He was also named the AFC Defensive Player-of-the-week twice. However, what's truly impressive is Gary’s Impact Foundation which is based in Indianapolis and exists to make an impact on the lives of underserved and disenfranchised youth and families. With four major programs within the foundation: Impact Ready, Impact Works, Tender Heart, and Gary’s Locker more than 200,000 youth and families have been impacted by their work. Outside of his NFL career and work with the community, Gary is the CEO and Founder of the Brackett Restaurant Group being the co-owner of Georgia Reese's and Stacked Pickle. Gary was also named one of Indianapolis’s own Forty Under 40 by the Indianapolis Business Journal in 2016. In this episode, you’ll discover… The building blocks that led to Gary becoming a D-1 walk-on, NFL Starter, and eventual Super Bowl champion The value of having people to give perspective to "see outside the frame" His inspirational metaphor for when you feel like quitting His method to working with over 200,000 people within the IMPACT Foundation His pre-game ritual His prediction for his next twenty years after retiring from the NFL Links From the Episode: Winning: From Walk-On To Captain, In Football And Life By Gary Brackett Gary's Locker IMPACT Foundation Stacked Pickle Georgia Reese's Southern Cuisine The Shepherd Community College Mentors for Kids Indianapolis Colts Follow Gary Brackett on Twitter Those Mentioned: Tony Dungy Gary Brackett
Gary Brackett was born with a love of competition and a will to win. By all accounts, he has already lived a life that most athletes (and even non-athletes) only dream of. If you know anything about football, it's likely that you know his name. You may remember his impressive stats (he still holds the record for most individual tackles in a Super Bowl). But he is best known for his unwavering passion, unmatched energy, and unrelenting work ethic that transformed this “underdog” into a Captain of a World Championship Team. Since his “retirement” (from football), Brackett has continued tackling opportunities. After hanging up his jersey, he received his MBA from George Washington University and founded Brackett Restaurant Group. In this episode, Foo and Gary discuss the friction points and challenges encountered in life and business.
