"Karcis #1": An Investigative Horror Tale | Interview with Writer Brian Hawkins

Geek Freaks

Hey all! Welcome, comic enthusiasts and horror aficionados! Today, we're plunging into the chilling world of "Karcis #1", the premiere offering from the innovative BlaX Trauma Productions. This new entry in the horror genre blends paranormal investigation with a gripping narrative set in the frozen landscapes of Alaska. The Chilling Premise "Karcis #1" introduces us to Paul Karcis, a paranormal investigator drawn into a harrowing mystery in Thompson Pass, Alaska. When a mutilated body is discovered in this secluded town, Karcis finds himself entangled in a web of supernatural forces and unspeakable horrors. The setting of a snowy Alaskan town adds an extra layer of isolation and menace to the story, promising to deliver a horror experience that is both unique and unsettling.    The Artistic Dream Team The creative team behind "Karcis #1" is a blend of diverse talents, each bringing their unique skills to the table. Nathan Kelly, a US Army veteran turned comic artist, and Don Mathias, a Boston-based cartoonist with a portfolio including work for DARK HORSE and BONGO COMICS, are just a couple of the names associated with this project. Their combined expertise is set to bring the world of "Karcis" to life in a way that is visually stunning and emotionally resonant. Brian Hawkins, a name synonymous with compelling storytelling and profound narratives, is the mastermind behind "Karcis #1". Known for his works like "Black Cotton" and "The Vineyard", Hawkins brings his unique vision to life through BlaX Trauma Productions. This Kickstarter campaign isn't just a launchpad for "Karcis #1"; it's a declaration of independence in the comic book world. By choosing Kickstarter as the primary distribution channel, Hawkins and his team are directly connecting with readers and comic book enthusiasts, ensuring that their stories are told exactly as they envision. My Podcast Encounter: Brian Hawkins on Geek Freaks I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Brian Hawkins on my podcast, Geek Freaks. This conversation offered an insightful glimpse into the creative process and the passion driving this project. Hawkins' dedication to storytelling and his vision for BlaX Trauma Productions were palpable throughout our discussion, leaving me eagerly anticipating the release of "Karcis #1". "Karcis #1" is more than just a comic book; it's a bold step forward in the world of horror storytelling. With a gripping narrative, a talented creative team, and the backing of a passionate community, it promises to be a standout addition to any horror enthusiast's collection. Keep an eye on this Kickstarter campaign, as "Karcis #1" is set to redefine what we expect from horror comics. On this episode of the podcast, we take a journey from The Jam to Paul Weller Solo via two super-fans... and a wonderful love story...David Rowe, and his partner, Jo White, have been to around 450 live shows and have some incredible stories and connections over the past 45 years... including joining the merchandise team for The Style Council and Paul Weller Solo!.David met Jo at school in St.Austell (double history) when she moved to Cornwall from Bounds Green, North London in 1978. They got the same bus to and from school (Jo to Pentewan, and David to Mevagissey). As you'll hear on the podcast, Jo introduced David to The Jam and they formed a great friendship through the music and live performances.Jo moved back to London in March 1984 when she started her nursing career in Paediatric Intensive Care. In April 1984, David started working as a Postman in St.Austell but left when he didn't have enough annual leave to do the 2nd Style Council tour in October 1984!.David moved to London in 1985 and inspired by messages & campaigning from Paul Weller... he worked for The BUAV (The British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection) , Greenpeace UK and then Amnesty International, where he worked for 26 years....In 1985, David and Jo started doing ad-hoc merchandising work for Brian Hawkins, who had done The Jam's merchandise before doing The Style Council. It started off just selling programmes after gigs and gradually they helped to set up and travelled with Brian, culminating in working on the early Paul Weller solo tours and the U.S. gigs in December 1991 and all Weller solo UK tours until the end of 1992 when Brian sadly lost the contract.Their only stipulation on doing the merch was that they clocked off at show time and came back out to sell after the encore!.David says "We've attended about 450 Shows (The Jam, The Style Council & Weller solo). Jo did a few more Jam shows than me. We did every Style Council UK tour date ( we both missed the Manchester Apollo gig on 12 October 1984 after the Wembley rail crash and I missed two more whilst doing The Communards ‘Red' tour in 1987)." Don't tell any of the other guests, but in the few months I've been welcoming folks into the Yeti Cave to interview them for the Cryptid Creator Corner, this is one of the episodes I was most excited about. I sit down and chat with Brian Hawkins about his upcoming series The Vineyard with Aftershock Comics . Issue #1 is out on August 3rd and Brian digs deep into the story of The Vineyard, the amazing creative team he's working with, and how the book landed at Aftershock. Plus I get to talk to Brian about his other comics projects, like Black Cotton published by Scout, his approach to storytelling, and even a little Shakespeare. You can find more about Brian at his website or follow him on Twitter and be sure to pick up The Vineyard #1 at your local comic book shop or wherever you get your comics.  Learn more about your ad choices. THE WRITERS BLOCK w/ David Avallone and Rylend Grant

David and Rylend have a delightful “career building” chat with writer/editor Brian Hawkins (Aftershock's THE VINEYARD)... and amid a tense conversational digression re: New York real estate, Rylend makes the rash decision to buy a three bedroom Townhouse in Jersey City that needs a bit too much work. There is a lot of disturbing news today, and at times it's quite overwhelming. Using the historical wisdom of JB Nash who advocated to "polish the bright spot" instead of focusing on negatives--enter Pastor Brian Hawkins who is an African-American ex-con running for US Congress in California. If there was ever an American success story--this is it. Pastor Hawkins not only turned his life around in prison but also figured out a way to get rival gangs to get along and respect each other in the prison yard. He had some startling comments on the poor literacy rates of prisoners that compelled me to do this show. I hope you take a listen--then read a book or two! https://www.hawkinsforcongress2022.com

Gary Roberson is a native of Medina County and grew up hunting on the family ranch between Devine and Yancey. Armed with a Model 94 Winchester, Roberson killed his first whitetail while hunting by himself at age seven and began calling critters when he was ten years old. After fifteen years in the banking industry, Roberson decided that he would rather chase four legged coyotes than two legged ones, so he and his wife Deb purchased Burnham Brothers Game Calls in 1991.While Gary has hunted and outfitted for whitetail deer, elk, turkey, and mule deer, he considers chasing mountain lions with hounds and calling coyotes his favorite hunting opportunities. His calling expertise has been well documented in outdoor magazines such as Outdoor Life, Field & Stream, Predator Extreme, and numerous TV shows. In 1992, Roberson produced “Calling All Varmints”, a “how to” video on calling predators, and collaborated with Mossy Oak to produce “Eyes Front”, a series of five calling videos. In 2006, Gary and longtime friend, Brian Hawkins produced “Catastrophic”, the most popular predator calling video of all time.Roberson worked with Savage Arms to develop the MODEL 10 PREDATOR HUNTER, Ruger in designing their line of predator rifles and with Nikon Sport Optics to produce the COYOTE SPECIAL riflescope, products specific for the predator calling game.Roberson is host of the wildly successful TV show “Carnivore”, which is airing for its eleventh season on Pursuit Channel. Gary is also a staff writer for The Journal of the Texas Trophy Hunters and in 2020 with a little prompting from Miss Deb, wrote “Eyes Front…Sixty Years of Hunting the Hunters.”Roberson is a Pro Staff member for Mossy Oak, Ruger, Trijicon, Hornady, and TRHP Outdoors and lives by the philosophy that “he who hunts the most, hunts the best”.

Cosmo DiNardo In Bucks County, Pennsylvania, between July 5 and July 7, 2017, four young men were indiscriminately murdered by 2 cousins. Cosmo DiNardo, 20, is the son of a wealthy businessman and this isn’t his first brush in with the law. He’s had more than 30 run-ins with the police but somehow has never been charged or convicted for anything. Meanwhile, his second cousin, Sean Kratz, had been in and out of jail following several burglaries including stealing a dog and lawn equipment. Despite being cousins the two were never really that close. In fact, they only started hanging out in the months prior to their gruesome killings. 3. Brian Hawkins For 25-years, Brian Hawkins from Redding, California, kept a dark secret – and it was that he had killed a man. One day Brian walked into the KRCR news station and said he was “sick of running” and that his newfound faith in “God and Christ” along with his own conscience has convinced him to admit his role in the murder of then 19-year old, Frankie McAlister. Frankie’s body had been found a year after he went missing in May of 1993. His vehicle had been abandoned in a Costco parking lot, Blood was found on both the interior and exterior of the car. Even though police managed to identify Hawkins and the Culver siblings to be the last people seen with Frankie, they’ve maintained their innocence and because of lacking evidence were never charged. 2. Robert Durst Born to NYC mogul, Seymour Durst and his wife, Bernice, Robert Durst from New York City, is one of four children. Even as a young kid, he appeared to have psychological problems. Robert once underwent counselling for his sibling rivalry and in 1953, a psychiatrist diagnosed him as having “personality decomposition and possibly even schizophrenia.” By the time he was in highschool in Scarsdale, he was described as a loner. He went on to enroll in a doctoral program at UCLA after college and this is where he first met, Susan Berman. Eventually he became a real estate developer, but the family business was later appointed to his brother, Douglas, instead of him. This proclamation caused a huge rift between Robert and his family, leading to eventual estrangement. 1. Henry Lee Lucas Born in Blacksburg, Virginia, Henry Lee Lucas had a dysfunctional childhood and family life. His dad was an alcoholic and his mother was a sex worker. As a child, he was forced to watch his mother have sex with her clients and she would often dress him as a girl. She also beat him heavily, even hitting him once with a plank on the head that sent him into a coma for 3 days. When he was 10 years old, he suffered an accidental eye injury. His mother ignored it until it got infected and it had to be removed and replaced with a glass eye. By this time, Lucas, had become an alcoholic and his brother and “Uncle Bernie” (his mother’s lover) had introduced him to animal torture and bestiality.

You’ll hear just how much Brian’s parents (and children) have taught him about leadership all throughout this interview. Brian believes that only by engaging employees is it possible to provide the excellent care the patients and their families deserve. The Hawk Eye program he initiated at DCVAMC empowers employees at all levels to actively observe customer service and immediately advocate for the patient if the service is sub-par. Employees also report their observations to Brian and his team and thanks to this program, numerous changes have been made at DCVAMC to better service the patients. One change resulting from this effort was a complete $900k redesign of the hospital atrium to make female veterans and employees more comfortable.
