In this episode we look at the singular cause of our pain and suffering and the solution!  Our problems and suffering come from the toxins in our mind such as anger, attachment, selfishness, and ignorance. The Buddhist path presents many methods to reduce and finally eliminate these toxins from our mind. This a gradual process with a variety of practices to achieve this goal.    In the episode's brief meditation, listeners determine what causes them the most suffering in their life currently, either most often or most deeply. They then contemplate 1) how are they currently thinking regarding the situation 2) how they could think that would help them remain peaceful. During the week, use mindfulness to notice when you're starting to become disturbed in that specific circumstance and try thinking in the alternate way that brings peace.   We take a deep dive into verse 271-271 of the Dhammapada, a collection of the actual words of the Buddha.Buddha spoke these verse with reference to some monks in the following story.   One day a group of monks approached Buddha and seated themselves beside him. They said this:  “We have acquired virtue; we have taken upon ourselves the pure practices; we are exceedingly learned; we dwell in places of abode that are solitary and remote; we have developed the supernatural powers by ecstatic meditation. For us it would be no hard matter to attain arahatship; indeed, we could attain arahatship any day we wished.”    The Buddha replied to them:    Not with      Virtue or religious practice      Great learning      Attaining samadhi      Dwelling alone,      Or [thinking], “I touch the happiness of renunciation      unknown by ordinary people,” Should you, monk, rest assured     Without having destroyed the toxins. Day 8 – Overcoming Excuses for being Sad “It is necessary to notice that many times these sufferings are products of our imagination, and a joyful spirit dispels them easily. In fact, many times they are trifles, or even without any foundation whatsoever. For example: a person forgets to greet someone because of a distraction, causing that person to presume it is out of malice or scorn. Or again, a word comes from the mouth of someone--perhaps in simplicity or jest--and it is immediately interpreted as an offense. Many times the disgust is disgust because we want to be disgusted, like spooked horses who jump backwards not because there may be an occasion for fear, but because they themselves create the fear. ...As for true and real tribulations and adversities, notice that if they are not taken with a joyful abandonment to God, they will become much heavier! They will damage the spirit and lead to impatience, lack of charity, murmuring against God, and even against one's own body. Drive sadness far away from you, for sadness brought death to many (Sirach 30:23). Thus, afflictions of soul, desolations, desperation--see how they foster more sadness! ...Yes, these things impede joy if one looks upon them with a worldly eye, if one seeks their causes in the earth, or in creatures, and does not look upon them with the eye of faith, or does not believe that all comes from God... nothing happens contrary to His will. Day 5 – Honoring God by Joy “Sometimes it may seem as though God does not react to evil, as if he is silent. And yet God has spoken. He has replied, and his answer is the cross of Christ: a word that is love, mercy, forgiveness.” With spiritual joy, one gives greater honor and glory to God, manifesting with deeds that he thinks well of God and is content in His service and with His treatment. With persistent unhappiness, by contrast, one dishonors God, slights God by one's deeds and manifests that he thinks poorly of God. …If it is such a horrible thing to demean one's neighbor, what then will it be to demean God? A sad servant dishonors his master, but a joyful and content servant honors him. For that reason we want to give to others a great idea of God our Father in order to give Him the glory that is His due. We want to serve Him with joy and delight, and not with sadness and against our will. We esteem, we appreciate, we magnify His gifts. We pray by hoping in Him, and we glorify Him again, as a God absolutely good, merciful, generous, and faithful. Let those be sad who serve tyrants, such as the world, the flesh, and the devil. ”Speak about God with all, however, in a way that is worthy of Him. Day 3 – Turning toward Spiritual Joy “Spiritual joy is experienced when one ponders the spiritual goods it possesses. What are these goods? Participation in the divine nature (as children of God), union with Jesus Christ, being in the bosom of the Church as her children, God's special protection, the gifts of the theological virtues, the Sacraments, the communion of saints, grace, friendship with God, the merits of our actions, the glory of heaven that is already almost ours by the firm hope we have (as a son already almost possesses the inheritance that awaits him from his father). This is the joy that we must seek. Few possess it, because they fail to call these goods to mind and fail to understand how valuable they are. They are like people who never stop to look at a beautiful painting, or to listen to beautiful music, and really enjoy them. They are like children who possess precious things but do not realize how valuable they are. Such people fail to ponder and take delight in the state of grace. Unlike worldly joy, spiritual joy is true joy; it is not based on anything false or illusory. It is to be preferred to all else, because it is good, holy, and superior to anything temporal. Day 2 – Letting Go of Worldly Joy “Such [worldly] joy is too shallow; it is as shallow as the thing enjoyed. This kind of childish joy, shared by the animals, soon passes away. Even if this joy lasts for a while, it can drag on and lead to boredom. This is the kind of joy sought by the worldly, since the sensible and material are all that they know. When some little struggle comes along, such as a toothache, this joy vanishes in a flash. This kind of happiness is not enough for the children of God, for they aspire to nobler and higher thoughts. They disdain the shallow, preferring deeper and more lasting joys, namely, the spiritual and eternal. Spiritual joys, therefore, should be the their happiness.” “God and creatures go different ways in search of the human soul. The Lord, by his loving kindness and bounty, sets about gaining its affection; creatures, incapable of offering it any real good, endeavor to allure it by vain and flattering appearances. En vez de llenar nuestra vida con fe y el amor de Dios, comienza a entrar el temor y nuestro amor se enfría por la maldad.La forma de este mundo nos hace trampa, no juegan limpio.El reino de Dios nos anima a vivir de otra forma, pero cuando nos hacen trampa nos provoca jugar de la misma manera.Si jugamos de la misma forma del mundo perdemos.El mundo te atrae y cuando caes te mata, estas son las artimañas de satanás.El amor a Dios se enfría cuando entra el temor.La salvación, la solución es mantener los ojos en Jesús. Levántate y resplandece.El mundo tiene su manera de actuar. Nosotros somos cristianos, hagamos lo que Dios dice.Haciéndolo a su manera la luz siempre vence las tinieblas.¿Cómo mantener los ojos fijos en Jesús? Mantente conectado. No es bueno estar solo, no trates de pelear solo.El león busca al que está separado de la manada. 04 – No consientas tener parte en la codicia Proverbios 1:10-19 “Hijo mío, si los pecadores te quisieren engañar, No consientas. Si dijeren: Ven con nosotros; Pongamos asechanzas para derramar sangre, Acechemos sin motivo al inocente; Los tragaremos vivos como el Seol, Y enteros, como los que caen en un abismo; Hallaremos riquezas de toda clase, Llenaremos nuestras casas de despojos; Echa tu suerte entre nosotros; Tengamos todos una bolsa. Hijo mío, no andes en camino con ellos. Aparta tu pie de sus veredas, Porque sus pies corren hacia el mal, Y van presurosos a derramar sangre. Porque en vano se tenderá la red Ante los ojos de toda ave; Pero ellos a su propia sangre ponen asechanzas, Y a sus almas tienden lazo. Tales son las sendas de todo el que es dado a la codicia, La cual quita la vida de sus poseedores.” Roboam, hijo de Salomón, fue el sucesor al trono en Israel. Tomó su cargo a temprana edad, pero aún a pesar de los consejos de su padre (Prov. 1:10-19), él decidió seguir el camino de los perversos. Cuando recién había tomado posesión del trono, el pueblo vino a él para solicitarle que redujeran los impuestos que habían sido puestos por su padre, y en vez de escuchar el consejo de los ancianos, aceptó lo que sus jóvenes consejeros le indicaron, esto provocó el malestar del pueblo, lo que llevó a la separación permanente entre las tribus del norte con las del sur, separando al Israel en dos naciones para siempre (1 R. 12:1-24). Roboam había escuchado el consejo que decía que no tenía que consentir el consejo de aquellos que quisieran hacer mal, antes, debía apartarse del consejo de ellos, pero decidió seguirles, y trajo gran desgracia por no escuchar el consejo bueno. Muchos hay que constantemente tratan de conseguir riquezas o bienes por medio de actos indebidos, incorrectos. La codicia es tal que sin medir las consecuencias que esto atrae, o sin importar que esos actos estén perjudicando a alguien, se dejan gobernar por la codicia quien controla sus comportamientos llevándolos al pecado y produciendo daños a otros. Desde tiempos antiguos vemos que siempre hay “consejeros malignos” que tratan de animarnos a tomar una decisión injusta para que consigamos un beneficio. Este pasaje nos advierte que no debemos escucharlos (v. 15). El hacedor de maldad va en pos de su pecado, y aunque en su momento crea que puede conseguir lo que busca, no se da cuenta que está poniendo “lazo” para sí mismo (v. 18). Tarde o temprano esa persona va a pagar por la maldad hecha. Miremos solamente cuantas personas terminan en la cárcel a causa de un acto de delincuencia, y algunos han muerto en el intento o después porque alguien en un acto de ira los asesinó. Aunque tal vez lo que uno quisiera hacer no sea digno de cárcel o muerte, siempre el pecado nos lleva a pagar las consecuencias ante los hombres, sobre todo, ante Dios. Sabio es escuchar el consejo de Dios y de apartarnos de aquellos que promueven el mal. Pavisam nesenas atmiņas par 2014. gadu, kad Rīga bija Eiropas kultūras galvaspilsēta, un Brīvības ielas zīmīgajā ļeņinekļa vietā greznojās Aigara Bikšes "Tumšādainā Bārbija". IIr atlūzas no ekspozīcijas, sniegā ieraktiem cilvēkiem Evelīnas Deičmanes-Vidas darba "Pārejošas bēdas", ar kādu Latvija 2009. gadā piedalījās prestižajā Venēcijas mākslas biennālē. Stāsta otrā daļa lielākoties ir ļoti lakoniska, tā informē, vai darbs radīts no jauna, izvilkts no mākslinieka šķūnīša, reizēm darbu saglabāt nav bijis iespējams - tas transformējies pastkartēs vai izstādīta tikai darba skice. Ekspozīcija "Mobilais muzejs. Nākamā sezona" arī mērķtiecīgi virza šo jautājumu – aicina skatītāju savām acīm pārliecināties par izstādītā darba kvalitāti un aktualitāti, vienlaikus uzdodot jautājumu par tā tālāko likteni, par Laikmetīgās mākslas muzeja nepieciešamību. Redzētais liek arī aizdomāties par ārkārtīgi sarežģītajiem, ar laikmetīgās mākslas saglabāšanu un restaurāciju saistītiem jautājumiem. “Boļševička”, pa ceļam uz Sarkandaugavu, ir jau agrāk mākslas, arī teātra projektos apdzīvota vide. Te ir mākslinieku darbnīcas, arī no celtniecības pārpalikumiem veidota, improvizēta sarunu un mākslas notikumu vieta - “Brick” bārs. Šādas milzīgas, zaļas teritorijas pilsētas centrā, kas kaut kādu iemeslu dēļ šobrīd attīstītājam nav vajadzīgas, pieder pie pilsētas noslēpumiem. Šobrīd šī teritorija ir atvērta apmeklētājiem, industriālajos džungļos izstādīta māksla. Lai arī kuratores sauciens ir pēc Laikmetīgās mākslas muzeja, manas skatītāja izjūtas brīžam ir bezatbildīgi atšķirīgas. Kirila Panteļējeva “Priekšpilsētas Buda” uz pamestas celtnes jumta izskatās tik lieliski, ka nemaz nealkstu pēc sterilākas vides. Izstāde “Mobilais muzejs. Nākamā sezona” Rīgā, bijušās fabrikas “Boļševiška” teritorijā būs skatāma līdz 29. augustam. Man liekas, ejot uz izstādi, ļoti svarīgi ir pareizi noskaņoties. This July, the Chinese Communist Party celebrated its 100th anniversary, marking a major milestone and underlining some major questions about its future. No other communist party has lasted this long, and certainly no other ruling authoritarian government has held its grip on power for a similar period of time in the modern era. But that's not to there was ever inertia. The party's history has been fraught with difficult decisions, successes, mistakes, and sweeping changes of perspective, ideology, and strategic engagement in the global environment. To mark this important anniversary, Robert Amsterdam is joined by Hans van de Ven and Philip Bowring, who along with others respectively edited and contributed to the excellent new book, "The Chinese Communist Party: A Century in Ten Lives." The book takes a novel approach to presenting this complex history, with each author presenting the story of a single individual for each decade, bringing engaging and colorful personal histories to reflect on the Party's relentless pursuit of power and extraordinary adaptability through the transformative decades since 1921.

The three each contributed chapters to a new volume called The Chinese Communist Party: A Century in 10 Lives, edited by Timothy Cheek, Klaus Mülhahn, and Hans van de Ven.
