All Things Considered

A programme to mark Mothering Sunday that has our presenter’s name all over it; Mary Stallard explores the relevance and significance for us today of Jesus’s mother, Mary of Nazareth. We hear about some of the long-standing traditions that have evolved around Mothering Sunday. It’s a day on which many church communities will honour their mothers and grandmothers as well as Mary herself. During the programme we hear from both Roman Catholics and Protestants about what Mary means to them. We also learn how Mary is the inspiration for contemporary religious movements and prayer groups. While Mary is loved by many to the extent of prayers offered to her, she has become a divisive person for others. Certainly, the ‘Magnificat’ - Mary’s poetic expression upon hearing she would be the mother of Jesus - has been seen as a powerful text. But with lines such as ‘he hath put down the mighty from their seat’, it can also make for an uncomfortable message. Finally we consider another text - the ‘Stabat Mater’, Mary’s outpouring of grief at the foot of the cross upon which Jesus is being crucified, and explore whether it has anything to say to us during the present pandemic. Our guests are the Very Revd Sarah Rowland-Jones OBE, Dean of St David’s Cathedral; the Revd Dr Gareth Leyshon and Revd Fr Matthew Roache-Saunders; Lucy Williams from Cwmbran and a member of ‘Focolare’, Revd Fr Damian Jackson SJ from St Beuno’s Jesuit Spirituality Centre in Denbighshire, and the Revd Dr Jennie Hurd, Chair of the Synod Cymru district of the Methodist Church. Music in the programme includes extracts from ‘Ave Maria’ by Robert Parsons, The St David’s Service by Neil Cox, ‘Stabat Mater’ by Giovanni Pergolesi and popular Marian hymns including ‘Daily daily’, and ‘Immaculate Mary’.

The name Brickell has become synonymous with the upscale financial district located on the southside of the Miami River. However, long before the name became a brand for an important quarter near downtown Miami, it was the surname of a prominent family that settled southside when the area was a sparsely populated outpost and long before it became what it is today. Those who are familiar with the story of the Brickell family may know their role in the formation of the city of Miami but may not be familiar with their story prior to arriving in Miami. It was a serendipitous journey to Australia that led William Brickell into great wealth, but also led him to find his wife. While Mary and Bill Brickell met and married in Australia, it was ultimately their journey to the wilderness along the Miami River that cast the family in a leading role in the formation of the Magic City.

Vineyard Church of the Peninsula

The Risk of Mary, sermon by Don Freeman There were so many reasons to say, ‘No.' So many, ‘What ifs?' ‘What will my family, friends, fellow villagers, even strangers, think?' ‘What about Joseph's reaction?' Many would have begun the round of questioning with, ‘Why me, of all people?' While Mary probably wouldn't have considered herself a risk-taker, something about the intimacy of her relationship with God, her leaning in to his love, to his leading, created in her a posture of heart that made submission to any and all plans of her good God seem both wildly uncertain and supremely safe. Mary's vibrant faith, in the face of the angel's startling pronouncement, freed her to speak those fateful words, “Be it unto me . . .” Luke 1: 26-56 A. _______________________________ 1. v. 29 – troubled 2. v.34 – How will this be? 3. v. 38 – I _____ the Lord's servant. ___________________________________________as you have said. Joseph was probably in his late teens to early twenties, living in his father’s house in Nazareth, when he met Mary. For Joseph, becoming a responsible man able to support a wife meant learning a trade or occupation—probably from his father, Jacob. God has tied masculine responsibility to occupational reality. While it isn’t known how well they got along, Joseph may have developed a deep love for his heavenly Father from his love for his earthly father. God often uses earthly examples to teach heavenly principles. Although we don’t know what kind of man Joseph’s father was, we do know it was customary in Jewish culture for the father to find or approve a wife for his son—often a distant relative. While Mary was probably a teenager, Jacob likely saw her devotion to God and approved of their marriage (Luke 1:38, 46-49). Marks of loving God are submission to the authority over you and incorporating godly counsel into decisions (Prov. 12:15; 1 Cor. 15:33; Eph. 6:1-3).

Mary is an accomplished editor, and she had us both laughing about some embarrassing typos in headlines and news copy in her journalism career. Those experiences she revealed showed that Mary understands vulnerability and that we all make mistakes. She knows the value of having a second set of eyes look at what we write and she couldn’t stress the importance enough for every writer to welcome feedback—even though it may not be what we want to hear. She openly welcomed clients of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities throughout our interview including students, business people, authors, and more. And with her professional background as a teacher, those skills she carries with her—help her clients achieve the great writing and messaging they are all looking for. Especially when most of us need an expert like Mary is at meeting deadlines. We live in the era of texting, instant messaging, and dashing off emails so I fell in love with Mary’s fondness for the English language. While Mary says we accept that form of communication—complete with its grammatical and spelling errors—that should not take the place of writing well. As an author myself, I share a special connection with Mary, who is writing a coming of age novel about her husband’s youth. To contact Mary directly, please visit www.MaryFordEdit.com today.

Let’s try to settle this Christmas question once for all, “What did Mary know?” The role God formed Mary to play in the birth narrative of Christ is fascinating and critical to our understanding of who Jesus is. While Mary certainly is a flawed sinner like the rest of us, she is used mightily of God and displays great faith in Him. What did she know about Jesus that strengthened her to submit to God’s will in her life? | Luke 1:26-38

“Are We Eager?”12/22/19Luke 2:8-21Core Belief: Authority of the Bible I believe the Bible is the Word of God and has the right to command my belief and action.2 Timothy 3:16-17 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.Scripture: Luke 2:8-218 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” 15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. 17 And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. 18 And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. 21 And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. The Message of this Passage:From the Ligonier Ministries: “Undoubtedly, we tend to put a heavy emphasis on the lowly circumstances of Jesus’ birth when we retell the Christmas story each year. Certainly this is appropriate, for the Son of God humbled Himself profoundly when He “emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men” (Phil. 2:5–8).Christ’s entire life was marked by humiliation, as He moved from a manger in Bethlehem to life as a common person in Nazareth to His ignoble death on the cross. Yet this humiliation led finally to glory. God the Father, because Jesus had been faithful to His mission, exalted Jesus and “bestowed on him the name that is above every name” (vv. 9–11).Our Savior’s glory was veiled by human flesh in His incarnation, and it remained hidden throughout much of His ministry. Yet there were points in our Savior’s life when His glory shone temporarily through the veil. The best example of this is the transfiguration, the moment when Peter, James, and John were granted a vision of the Lord’s glory as it shone through the flesh of the Savior (Matt. 17:1–13).Furthermore, this glory also shone brightly at times when the people might not have been expecting it. In the midst of the humbling conditions of our Lord’s birth (poverty, being unable to find shelter in Bethlehem), there was a special manifestation of the Messiah’s glory to people nearby. The account of this manifestation is found in today’s passage. While Mary and Joseph tended to their son, many shepherds were nearby tending their flocks (Luke 2:8). In those days, shepherds occupied the bottom rung of society’s ladder, and the average citizen of Judea wanted little to do with these keepers of sheep. No one could have predicted that the first people to hear of Jesus outside of His parents would be a motley crew of shepherds. Nevertheless, an angel of the Lord appeared to these men, who got to watch the greatest sound-and-light show of all time (Luke 2:8–9).Understandably, the shepherds were afraid (v. 9), but in this case the glory of the Lord’s presence, which they could otherwise not endure, was a good thing. This was the announcement of the Savior, the One who had come to redeem even society’s outcasts. So, after the angels sang their praises to the Lord, the shepherds hastily traveled into Bethlehem to see the wonderful gift the Father had given to His people (vv. 15–16).The shepherds were eager to see the Savior of the world, and we should be eager to see Him as well. This involves not only coming to Him in our conversions but also seeking His face each and every day of our lives.Though we will not see the fullness of His glory until we see Him face to face in heaven,we will nonetheless come to a fuller appreciation of this glory as we study His Word and pray to Him.Let us be diligent in these means of grace.”Answering Interpretive Questions:We know these events took place after the birth of Jesus, but how does Luke’s interpretation differ from Matthew’s account? Why do you think they are different? Why do you think the first proclamation is made to shepherds? Why is the announcement in v. 11 so significant?Take time to consider all Mary had been through up to this point. What do you think she “pondered in her heart” according to v.19?What does this story teach us about those our culture quickly overlooks? Is there anyone you quickly dismiss, or don’t pay attention to, and how can you change your attitude towards these people in the future?Compare the reactions of the three groups mentioned in 2:18– 20: the onlookers “amazed,” Mary “treasuring and pondering,” and the shepherds “glorifying and praising God.” How do these reactions compare to our modern day reactions to the gospel?Read Revelation 1:13-18. What are the differences between these two images of Jesus?Read Romans 5:1. Even since the birth of Jesus there has not been peace on earth. How would you explain the peace that Jesus brings to an unbeliever?Notes:

So a big thanks to her, her work, and for sharing her stories and perspective with us on the Live Your Dance podcast this week! P.S. Luke 1.26-38 While Mary’s character can be seen in other passages, God’s character is on display here. God gives grace to whom He wills. His grace is not earned, but freely given to His People.
