There's an alarm clock buzzing or ringing or chiming that is bent on a theme…that of ‘waking up'. That's our theme in the show todays as we excavate the mines of rich Americana ore from the past century, sharing songs whose thematic tone demands that our eyes open to the brighter days ahead. Dave has a boatload of sounds that include the rockabilly sounds of Mac Curtis and some country bop from Billy Briggs. That's not all…there's the brothers Everly, Merle Haggard, Les Paul & Mary Ford, Richard Thompson, Nat King Cole, Bob Dorough and a couple dozen others. The Orthodox Deaconess – Full Length Interviews On Jan 30, 2024, Ancient Faith Today released an audio documentary entitled The Orthodox Deaconess: Examining the Call for Restoration. In that 1 hour and 45 minute documentary there were 16 diverse voices heard representing Orthodox Christians who were both in favor and opposed to the restoration. In this episode of Ancient Faith Today, you will be able to hear the complete interviews or comments of all 16 individuals. The timestamps below will help you find the ones you are most interested in hearing. As we mentioned in the documentary, our goal was to provide a forum for responsible, respectful discussion that furthers the Ancient Faith Ministries' mission to educate, edify, and evangelize. While we never intend to present material that is not in line with the teachings of the Orthodox Church, there are topics where the Church does not have a unified stated position. And this is true of this topic. People have conflicting opinions about the history and function of the female diaconate and whether that role should be restored today. In light of that you need to know that we at Ancient Faith do not necessarily endorse the opinions of all the people we interviewed. We do however express our gratitude for their willingness to speak to us. 00:01:42 Metropolitan Saba 00:27:05 Dr. Edith M. Humphrey 01:08:05 Dr. Carrie Frederick Frost 01:38:11 Fr. Sarah speaks with Mary T. Ford about her novel, Boy at the Crossroads: From Teenage Runaway to Class President: "Tennessee, 1955. Conley Ford learned quickly the world's full of hard knocks. Seeking the wrong kind of excitement, the restless thirteen-year-old falls in with a group of older boys joyriding in stolen Mercury cars... until he is arrested and put on probation. With a harsh father waiting and too embarrassed to face his classmates as a jailbird, the impetuous youth leaves town, making it all the way to New Orleans. No stranger to demanding work from the age he was old enough to walk, Conley uses his wits and street smarts to commandeer a hot dog cart and make some cash. But when a turf war and a near-fatal accident sends him back home, the resourceful teen faces a choice between staying in misery or once more striking out into a dangerous world. Can this troubled young man ever find somewhere he can thrive? Inspired by real events and told through cleverly crafted storytelling, Mary Ford depicts an adolescent who grew up impoverished and with minimal affection, but still found the strength to follow his gut toward something more. And as his journey takes him to Cincinnati, Chicago, and other far-flung parts of the United States, a lost little traveler ends up finding acceptance and hope in the one place he never expected." As we celebrate the tremendous impact that Dr. Martin Luther King had and continues to have on our nation, it is only fitting that we learn more about the life of someone who's legacy is forever imprinted upon Murray State's history of familial culture and academic excellence, Mary Ford Holland, '61. Mary Ford Holland, Murray State's first Black student, was posthumously awarded an honorary doctorate of education from Murray State as part of our fall 2022 commencement ceremony. Holland's niece and longtime caretaker, Elnora Ford, travelled to campus from her home in Michigan to accept the honor on her behalf, and on behalf of the Ford family. Originally from Trigg County, Kentucky, Holland was home schooled by her mother and grandmother until she entered the eighth grade. She graduated from a segregated boarding school in Paducah and eventually earned her teaching certificate from West Kentucky Industrial College, now West Kentucky Community and Technical College, in 1935. Holland also attended Kentucky State College, now Kentucky State University, through correspondence courses part-time, working toward her bachelor's degree. In the summer of 1955, at 48 years old and on the heels of the Brown v. Board of Education decision, Holland transferred to what at the time was Murray State College, becoming the first Black student to attend the institution. She earned her bachelor's degree in Education in August of 1961 at the age of 54. Mary Ford Holland was a pioneer in education throughout this region, teaching literacy and English, eventually retiring as a Reading Specialist at Lyon County Elementary School in 1972. She and her husband, Charles, did not have children, so it was Elnora who served as her caretaker until her death at age 92. While in Murray, Elnora sat down with Murray State University President Dr. Bob Jackson, College of Education and Human Services Dean Dr. David Whaley and Director of Alumni Relations Carrie McGinnis to share an oral history of Mary Ford Holland's upbringing, early career and groundbreaking experience at Murray State so we can preserve that important part of our history for the University's archives. This episode of the Racer Alumni Podcast features the audio of that conversation. This podcast was produced with the help of Jim Ray Consulting Services and made possible by members of the Murray State University Alumni Association. Jim is a 1992 Murray State graduate. He can help you with the concept development, implementation, production and distribution of your own podcast, just as he has done for the MSUAA. Not a current member of the MSUAA? Let's change that! Award-winning journalist Mary Ford has made the transition to novelist with “Boy at the Crossroads: From Teenage Runaway to Class President.” The book is a collection of some of the amazing stories lived by her husband Conley. Here's a look at what's contained in the pages: Tennessee, 1955. Conley Ford learned quickly the world's full of hard knocks. Seeking the wrong kind of excitement, the restless 13-year-old falls in with a group of older boys joyriding in stolen Mercury cars... until he is arrested and put on probation. Mary and I talk about her choice to write the novel and the way Conley collected them. She shares some of his experiences and how she decided which to include. She also goes into the research done to set the scenes. The book has gotten some great reviews and Mary has hosted a number of book readings and signings. We talk about what this has meant to Mary and the people she's met.
Here's the second part of this series of two about this amazing couple, because there was such soooo much to say about these two. So, where were we? Les and Mary realise that they've just invented sound on sound on tape. And that is absolutely amazing but, guess what? Many new inventions are yet to come!
Exploring Wisconsin's most haunted places, with music from Les Paul & Mary Ford, and a review of Raised Grain "Guitar City Black".
Les Paul isn't only the name of one of the most incredible guitars ever made but it was also a music star and inventor. Alongside his wife, the talented singer and guitarist Mary Ford, he has paved the road for many musicians. From the days when Les' mum pushed him to experiment with sound, to the ones when a car crash will lead to one of the major developments in music history.
Decades after acts like Les Paul & Mary Ford, Captain & Tenille, and Ike & Tina had their heyday, seeing the phrase “husband-and-wife duo” can personally make me wince. Like we get it; you love each other, you’ve got great chemistry together, and you have a lot of emotions you need to dispense, but often, […]
Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir singer Mary Ford talks about her career with the group and her life roots with the art form. Mary chose the gospel at a crossroads after nearly losing her life on her honeymoon. The power of music on and inside the body as well as the unifying spirit it brings to audiences and performers is featured in this conversation with Mary. Mary Ford has been a vocal performer for 45 years. She has sung a capella, as an accompanied soloist and most recently has been a member of the The Left Coast Sextet, an all women's jazz ensemble. She's sung for 34 years with the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir. Mary is a mother, spouse, retired psychologist and bodyworker, as well as an active artist, writer and adventurer. She works with several local nonprofits as an advisor, teacher and donor activist, and is dead serious about economic and racial justice. Mary is a boogie boarder and rabidly competitive pickleball player.More visual information, liner notes, and an episode transcript can be found for this (and every!) episode on Agile Vocalist.com
Judy Garland with Les Paul and Mary Ford!
Mary Ford did more for Les Paul's career than most people know or care to admit. Before she met Les for a radio audition, Mary already had notoriety in the country scene as “Colleen Summers.” When the two musicians became entangled - both professionally and romantically - her plush vocals and quick pickin' made them one of the most popular acts in America. But Les' pride and workaholic lifestyle would eventually strip Mary not just of her love of music — but also the proper credit she deserved. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Delay is one of those plugins that can be deceptively tricky in music production: use too much and it can sound gimmicky; use it without knowing what you're trying to achieve and it can sound silly, and;, not understanding all it's capabilities beyond something that makes things sound... 'echoey'
This episode introduces the music of Dylan's newest band members, Charley Drayton & Doug Lancio, & features performances from Milawaukee (November 2, 2021) & Chicago (November 3, 2021), & includes a phone interview with our correspondent Bryan Lookatch, who called into KEPW to offer his impressions after attending both shows. STEVE SINGS THE STANDARDS! No longer will the rest of The Steve Miller Band be holding Steve Miller back on his first and only solo album, an album of jazz and blues covers. Where do jazz and blues meet? Does anyone remember the UPN show "Shasta McNasty"? What songs have you heard the most in your life? Did Steve pass his test? Did he play it too safe? Did he at least use a clean tone? Should you ever open an album with "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah"? If Steve was going to pretend to be Les Paul, shouldn’t he have got someone to be his Mary Ford? Is "Hudson Hawk" any good? If this is a passion project, where is the passion? We'll try and uncover the truth behind all of this on this episode of Detours and Outliers.
Has it been a while since you've said those marriage vows or did the Dance of Isaiah? Orthodox weddings are quite different from the way many Hallmark movies end. Today Cynthia talks to Drs. David and Mary Ford about marriage. They cover what an Orthodox ceremony looks like, and take us through the purpose of marriage and... what is submission? Dr. David Ford is Professor of Church History at St. Tikhon's Seminary in South Canaan, Pennsylvania. He went to college at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, where he majored in History. Immediately after graduation he went to Liberia, West Africa, as a volunteer in the United States Peace Corps; he served there for three years in the field of education. Upon returning, he entered the M.Div. program at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Here he learned about the Early Church, and through his continuing study of the facts of Church History, he realized that only Holy Orthodoxy has preserved the fullness of the Christian Faith. Having graduated with an M.Div. degree, he then began the Ph.D. program in Church History and Historical Theology at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. Dr. Mary Ford is Associate Professor of New Testament at St. Tikhon's Orthodox Theological Seminary in South Canaan, PA, where she has taught for almost 30 years. She has published most recently The Soul's Longing: An Orthodox Christian Perspective on Biblical Interpretation (2015), as well as co-authoring with her husband, David, Marriage as a Path to Holiness: Lives of the Married Saints, and co-editing Glory and Honor: Orthodox Christian Resources on Marriage, as well as numerous articles. She was very blessed to have discovered the Orthodox Church in England in the late 1970s, and thus to have spent time with both the late Fr. Sophrony Sakharov and Met.Anthony of Sourozh, as well as Fr. Lev Gillet, Nicolas Zernov (who was her sponsor at her baptism), and other inspiring Orthodox Christians who shared a common zeal for the Faith and for living the gospel. Is it time to make some changes in your life? Do you want to stop the madness and get on track with your health? Maybe coaching is right for you. I've helped many people gain their health back over the years, and would love to talk with you. Just reach out with the link below to get on my schedule.
