If we follow the advice of the world, we will build our own mini-kingdoms without much concern with God's opinion of our work. How many people live their lives, set their goals, and make their plans without any place for God's Word? Our passage today deals with the vanity of our worldly plans, of the plans we make without considering the Lord. If we are going to build something that lasts, we must build it around God – around His purposes and His character. God is building His kingdom. It will last. The question for each of us is whether we are on His agenda or our own.

The world is full of vulnerable people. The book of Ruth tells the story of a vulnerable young woman who leaves her country to join her mother-inlaw and live in the land of Israel. It's also the story of one man who protected her in her vulnerability – a man named Boaz. Today, we want to see his story and see how he protected this vulnerable woman who had left her own people, even her own religion, to be part of the nation of Israel and to worship the God of Israel. We may notice people around us who are vulnerable, some of whom are: children, immigrants and refugees, women, ethnic minorities, the sick, and others. How would we care for them with the care God calls us to demonstrate?

As we read the final verses of Paul's letter to the Corinthians, we will notice how much he valued his relationships. Without their help, it is simply impossible to imagine how he would have been as successful in bringing the gospel throughout the Roman empire. Relationships are as vital as they are difficult, so it is especially important to keep God's purposes in mind. Because relationships matter, we must pursue them through our relationship with Christ. A growing Christian life is a relationally connected life.

Ephesians 4:7-16 English Standard Version (ESV) 7 But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 8 Therefore it says, “When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.” 9 (In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth? 10 He…

For all the complaints one may have of social media, it still holds potential as a tool to accomplish good. A small example is Facebook Marketplace, a simple but powerful way to sell items — provided the item you are selling has a market. How do I assess whether an item has a market? It has been said that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” yet Jesus also said: “But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness…” (Matthew 6:23) What if we trusted God's judgment of what will make us happy, rather than relying upon our own perceptions and experiences? Trust the Lord to find the blessing promised in the beatitudes.
Ephesians 4:1-6 (ESV) Unity in the Body of Christ 4 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit—just as you…

Our God knows that believers in Jesus Christ can become very content in focusing on their own personal Christian life and happiness in Christ. This syndrome may be caused by the believer thinking their own relationship to God is private between themselves and Jesus. Another symptom is that to involve other people in their faith may interfere with their emotional satisfaction with knowing Christ. This “Jesus and me” syndrome is demonstrated in behaviors that avoid contact with other people. For example, this spiritual condition results in leaving worship service as immediately as they are able; not being willing to participate in prayer chains or prayer meetings; not attending congregational meetings; and avoiding small groups such as care groups.

It's been said that a failure to plan is a plan to fail. Whatever our goals may be, whether walking in obedience to God's commands or living our fullness in Christ, success usually requires planning. Making plans, when done by faith, are an honor to God. In today's passage we will learn about God and our plans and how, trusting in God's sovereignty, we need to make our plans by faith, leaving the results to God. How do we do godly planning?

A nation's foundation is its story. The story is the nation. The story is a source of pride and inspiration. A revolution has taken place to replace the heritage of the USA as a nation built on protecting freedom of conscience to a nation built on greed and exploiting people. From the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock to the Declaration of Independence to the Statue of Liberty to Martin Luther King's, “I Have a Dream” speech, the USA has proclaimed the liberty of a free and clear conscience. The USA government protected Jesus' fundamental message in John 8:34-36 – “if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”

None of us likes to lose. In fact, just the inevitability of loss can lead to depression, discouragement, and half-hearted efforts. We ask, “Will it even matter?” A false belief was spreading among the Corinthian church, leaving them with a sense of inevitable loss – the false belief that there was no resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:12). In this one belief, they lost their hope in heaven and the immediate consequence was them beginning a pattern of immoral living (1 Corinthians 15:32-34). In order to really enjoy the blessings of God, we need to embrace the fullness of Jesus' work. We are not left as losers in the game of life. No, Jesus' resurrection is our victory, something that changes the way we live. Today we want to look at the victory of the resurrection.

What will our bodies be like when we get to heaven? The question only grows in our imagination as our body groans under the weight of our weakness of sickness, injury and aging (Romans 8:23). The Bible promises that every believer shall be resurrected one day to a “glorified body” in the Lord. What will that body be like? (1 Corinthians 15:35) That's what we want to look at today.

Just as you can't take apples out of apple pie and still have apple pie, you can't take the resurrection out of the Christian faith and still have the Christian faith. The bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ is essential to true Christian faith. Like modern liberal churches, some in the church of Corinth claimed that resurrection was impossible, even as they tried to hold to the Christian faith. Our passage today shows that the resurrection is an essential conviction of the faith, and it is something we must receive, embrace, and live in light of. Why does the resurrection matter?

If we are going to effectively solve our problems, we have to get to the source. Just bouncing from symptom to symptom will not solve problems; we need to get at the root. For the last 9 months, we have been looking at the problems in the church at Corinth. Today we start on the final problem: their misunderstandings of the gospel, particularly the resurrection of Jesus (1 Corinthians 15:12). What if this problem was behind all of the rest? Today we will see how the gospel is the power for living, and the power behind solving our problems. What is the gospel?

Words have an enormous power to affect our lives. Negative or false words wound the spirit and mislead. Positive words of truth of love have the power to build in courage and love. Words matter. Our Christian walk and testimony must be built upon the Word of God. What happens when the use of words is replaced by experiences? This was happening in the church in Corinth as the ministry of intelligible words was being replaced by the unintelligible experience of speaking in tongues (1 Corinthians 14:1-2). In this passage, we learn how understandable words are necessary for making disciples and confronting the conscience.

Who is the most loving person you know? What is it that makes them so loving? The church in Corinth was divided and disrupted by people who thought they had it all. They were missing something very important–love. Because God is love (1 John 4:8), our Christian faith is best demonstrated in the way we love. Love is the goal, not supernatural experiences, not our own comfort, or increasing our own glory. What is the value of love?

We go to the doctor because our personal well-being depends on each part of our body being healthy. If just one part of our body is unhealthy, or missing, it affects everything else. It’s the same thing in the church. In fact, the church is described as a “body”, made up of many parts (1 Corinthians 12:12-14). Each one of us is a part of the whole, and we need to be concerned about the whole of the body, and not just our own life. As an interconnected body, we must care for each member as critical for the health of the whole. A healthy body needs the involvement of all the parts. Our passage can be compared to a doctor’s visit where the physician checks the health of our body. How do we have a healthy church?

One of the many conflicts in the church at Corinth was over spiritual gifts. Spiritual gifts are abilities the Holy Spirit gives believers when they believe in Jesus Christ. In this controversy, people who had certain gifts were treated as more spiritual than others and those without were treated like a spiritual underclass. Our passage today shows us that there is no spiritual underclass among God’s people, but God has poured out His grace by giving the Holy Spirit to every believing Christian in the church. Through this, He has made unspiritual people spiritual. Where do we see the Holy Spirit active in our lives?

The thing that was supposed to bring the Corinthian church together was splitting them apart – the Lord’s Supper. Instead of worship and care for each other, they were so absorbed in themselves people were starving around them and they didn’t seem to care! In fact, their practice was so contrary to Jesus’ intentions (John 13:2-5, 34-35), they couldn’t even truly call it the Lord’s Supper (1 Corinthians 11:20). The Lord’s Supper is a gift to the church to show that Jesus gave His life for His people and brings them into one united body. Because it is so precious a gift, we need to practice it rightly.

What is worship all about? If we listen to many churches and churchgoers, we might be led to think it is about “YOU”. Were you inspired? Were you entertained? Did you have a good experience? Did you feel comfortable? With our culture of individualism, it is easy to forget that 1) God is the audience of worship (not “you”) and 2) we worship together in community with others. This brings us to the issue of head coverings in 1 Corinthians 11. In a topic like this, we must separate timeless biblical principle from cultural artifact. While head coverings are not a universal and timeless requirement, the practice of humility in worship (before God and others) continues through eternity. This passage helps us set proper expectations in worship, properly prepare for it, and to actually worship in a way that glorifies God and assists our neighbor.

We can't talk about Easter without talking about death. The disciples went to Jesus' grave, expecting to find him dead in His grave. The day started in the dread of death, but resurrection brought about the surprise of life. What if we were more aware that we will one day live? How would that affect the way we live? Today, we want to connect the promise of resurrection with the hope of a full, courageous, and loving life. Once we have the assurance of our future, we will be ready to live how God wants us to live now.

Although most Christians consider John 3:16 their favorite verse, they do not think about its message very deeply. The perplexity of the verse is demonstrated in 1 Timothy 4:10. How can God be the Savior of all men, but eternal salvation is distinct from temporal salvation? God giving His Son as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29) does not mean all are saved. Not all have faith (2 Thessalonians 3:1) and Jesus is a stone of stumbling (1 Peter 2:8; Isaiah 8:14). How does God love the world?

If you believe in Jesus Christ, you have liberty in the decisions you make. There are two errors that can hurt us spiritually: legalism and licentiousness (1 Corinthians 10:23-24). Legalism adds to the commandments of God, making us judgmental and leaving outside many blessings of God in creation. License ignores the relational laws that help us walk in covenant faithfulness with our Heavenly Father. Athletes are truly inspiring to watch in action. They have trained to be the best at what they do. Natural talent is not everything, their ability had to be developed through a rigorous training plan which encompassed every area of their lives. Our passage today compares the Christian life to an athletic event. Some who at first profess faith in Christ end up giving up on Christ to go after sin. Others fail to live in Christ and end up in guilt and shame for their decisions (Mark 14:27-30). Our passage today reminds us that the key to Christian living is devotion, and we discipline ourselves for the things we love. What kind of discipline helps us grow in devotion?
