This week, we come in hot — starting with wuxia vibes, holiday chaos, and cursed Christmas remixes of “September” — before diving into music stats, Taskmaster binges, Eden's Wuxia/Baihe adventures, and Peter's latest reading spree (including Gödel, Escher, Bach). Eventually, we embark on the Most Important Cultural Work of Our Time: a fast-food and fast-casual tier list. Along the way, we crown unexpected champions, bury some long-held myths (looking directly at you, In-N-Out), and declare Waffle House the beating heart of American civilization. It's unhinged, joyful, occasionally shameful, and fully definitive.Opening ShenanigansEden opens with an incredible wuxia monologue introducing Beauty's Blade, the Baihe novel they've been reading.Peter tries (and fails) to match the energy.Thanksgiving recaps: delayed flights, Target wandering, and the absolute war crime that is “Do You Remember…the 21st Night of December” playing over store speakers.Life Updates & MediaEnd-of-year malaise, work overload, and winter dread.Apple Music Replay breakdowns:Peter: another year, another Slow Forever domination.Eden: a deeply chaotic top-albums list featuring Rebecca Black, Japanese jazz fusion, KPM library music, and Tron: Legacy.Taskmaster binges continue.Peter's current reading includes Three-Body Problem and the 900-page Gödel, Escher, Bach.Eden is deep into Where Winds Meet (“What if Assassin's Creed but Wuxia and optionally an MMO?”), and fully living in Jianghu.Manga corner: Kaiju Girl Caramelise is adorable and unhinged in equal measure.

On this week's Extra Serving, NRN editor in chief Sam Oches and executive editor Alicia Kelso discuss the latest restaurant industry news, including Panera Bread's plan to reclaim its fast-casual dominance, Jack in the Box's brutal sales report, and Topgolf's sale to a private-equity group. First up is Panera, a chain that is considered one of the OGs of fast casual but which has had unremarkable sales growth for at least a decade. New CEO Paul Carbone acknowledged that the chain's apex was between 2005 and 2011 and laid out a plan for reclaiming that superiority in the coming years. Sam and Alicia discuss the turnaround plan and how Panera can climb to the top of a much more crowded fast-casual field. Next up is Jack in the Box, which endured a brutal 7.4% sales slide in the most recent quarter and which itself has laid out a plan for turning things around. Sam and Alicia sense a trend! Indeed, many restaurant companies have fessed up that things aren't going to plan and that a change is needed. Why is this the case? And what can restaurants do to return to former glory? Sam and Alicia have ideas. Finally they turn their attention to Topgolf, 60% of which was acquired by private-equity firm Leonard Green for $1.1 billion. The deal takes Topgolf private, which could help the eatertainment concept deal with its own struggles. It isn't the first restaurant chain to go from public to private this year — Denny's and Potbelly were also acquired by private companies — and it may not be the last, as rumors swirl that chains like Pizza Hut and Noodles & Co. could be acquisition targets. What do Sam and Alicia make of this movement? Find out on the latest episode of Extra Serving. My guest today is Ron Shaich, founder of Panera and chairman of CAVA. The headlines will tell you that Ron built Panera into a $7.8 billion company. But the real story is far more interesting. He went all in on Panera. He sold off every other concept they owned, like Au Bon Pain, to focus on on Panera. His philosophy is simple: Be long-term greedy, not short-term stupid. We discuss why profit is always a byproduct (focus on it and you'll lose everything), how to understand the customer, and the real costs of building something great. Today he's repeating the same playbook he used at Panera with CAVA. At 71, he tracks his glucose continuously and works out every morning at 8am. He runs quarterly reviews on his life with the same discipline he brought to building companies. This isn't about restaurants. It's about making painful bets when everyone else is optimizing for next quarter, and understanding that real commitment owns you—you never own it. ----- Thank you to the sponsors for this episode: reMarkable: Get your paper tablet at https://www.reMarkable.com today .tech domains: Nothing says tech like being on .tech https://get.tech/ Shopify: https://shopify.com/knowledgeproject ----- Upgrade: Get a hand edited transcripts and ad free experiences along with my thoughts and reflections at the end of every conversation. Brad's morning at Panera turned into an accidental observation study on how personal drama is infiltrating the workplace. Surrounded by Gen X and Boomer professionals complaining about family issues, relationship problems, and personal grievances with coworkers, he witnessed something that used to be unthinkable people bringing their entire personal lives into professional spaces. The once-impenetrable wall between work and personal life has shrunk to a speed bump. For Gen X professionals, that boundary used to be absolute. Personal problems stayed personal. Work problems stayed at work. Today's workplace doesn't operate that way anymore, and it's not just Gen Z driving this change. The blending of personal and professional lives creates challenges for leaders. It's a time suck, an energy drain, and a real cost. But it can also reduce turnover when handled with empathy and clear boundaries. The question isn't whether this blending will happen - it's already happening. In this episode of Pearls On, Gloves Off, Mary sits down with Jacqueline Lee, Senior Vice President and General Counsel at Flynn Group, to unpack what it takes to lead legal, compliance, and risk functions at scale. Flynn is the parent company behind brands like Panera, Taco Bell, Wendy's, Planet Fitness, and more, with 75,000+ employees across the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand. Jacqueline shares her journey from big law to being unexpectedly tapped for a GC role just a year into her in-house life. Along the way, she reveals what's really changed (and what hasn't) in that transition — especially around how legal advice must shift to be more strategic, practical, and business-aligned. In this conversation, you'll learn: How to translate your legal skills for non-lawyer clients. Jacqueline stresses the importance of tailoring advice to how business leaders think and act — not how lawyers talk. Why “perfect information” is a myth in-house. You'll hear how GCs must balance risk, ambiguity, and the need to move fast. How to lead through crisis and uncertainty. Jacqueline's leadership during the pandemic reveals lessons in transparency, empathy, and restoring a feeling of control. How to demonstrate real value to the business. She explains her shift from narrative legal reports to visual dashboards, metrics tied to core business KPIs, and proactive reporting. The case for in-house litigation. Flynn handles much of its litigation internally; Jacqueline explains how they pick which matters to pursue internally vs. outsource — and why she still loves law. How to recruit, grow, and scale a legal team. We dig into her hiring philosophy, aligning on values, and the challenges of hybrid teams. Pricing and partnership with outside counsel. Jacqueline critiques the inefficiencies of hourly billing and shares how value-based arrangements can align incentives and build trust. If you're an aspirational in-house counsel or a legal leader grappling with how to prove impact, this episode is packed with insights you can start applying now.
