We have a chat with Alexandre Tannous, a leading sound researcher, sound therapist and ethnomusicologist. On 9/18/19 Alexandre will lead an experiential exploration of the effects of this unique system of sound, consciousness, and spirituality with key members Brooklyn Raga Massive. To deepen the experience we sat had a wide ranging discussion about the effects of sound. Alexandre Tannous has been active as a musician, educator, composer, and as an ethnomusicologist. He holds a Bachelor of Music with a double major in Music Theory and Composition, and a Master of Arts degree in Music Education from Columbia University Teachers College. His ethnomusicological research investigates issues of acculturation, community, musical identity in an urban setting, and the concepts of talent, charisma, and leadership in music. He is a sought-after ethnomusicologist/composer consultant on projects in recording studios helping creating awareness in amalgamating various musical cultures. For the past 17 years he has been researching the therapeutic and esoteric properties of sound from three different perspectives – Western scientific, Eastern philosophical, and shamanic societal beliefs – to gain a deeper understanding of how, and to what extent, sound has been used to affect human consciousness. This search has led him to the intersection where art, science, philosophy, and spirituality intersect. His ethnomusicological approach entails a social scientific study of sound use in several traditional contexts—religious, spiritual, holistic, and cultural—for various purposes and occasions in entertainment, worship, meditation, and rituals of healing and trance. Consequently, his approach in researching, understanding, experiencing, transmitting, and working with sound has always been based on a multidisciplinary approach. The material he transmits about sound is based on thorough research over many years: observations he made during his fieldwork, scientific studies, personal experiences, and data collected from thousands of people he has worked with doing sound therapy. This has led him to a deeper understanding of how sound reveals and unlocks hidden powers we have within us to promote profound inner changes and healing. Inspired by his findings, he designed a protocol of an integrated experience he calls “Sound Meditation” in which he shares the findings from his research, raising an awareness to how a specifically designed sound can have the ability to help us to disconnect from habitual patterns while judiciously listening to the specific traditional instruments he plays. He employs a phenomenological approach to study the effects of sound, using a method that empowers the participants to engage actively with tools that enhance their experience, using the consciousness-altering properties of sound to heighten self-awareness, to connect to the higher self, to fine-tune self-observation, and to attain self-realization. Alexandre is a frequent guest-lecturer in major institutions such as Georgetown University, Princeton University, Columbia University, NYU, and in museums such as the American Museum of Natural History, the Metropolitan Museum of New York, the Brooklyn Museum, the Rubin Museum, and the Museum of the City of New York. He continues to do research on sound, currently works as a sound therapist, teaches this practice, and lectures about sound. On 9/18, Beginning with a presentation and a discussion which give context to this music, Alexandre will lead a sound meditation that will incorporate musical experiences from Neel Murgai (overtone loops), Arun Ramamurthy (Carnatic Violin), David Ellenbogen (guitar), Indrajit Roy-Chowdhury (sitar) and Ehren Hanson (tabla).Participants should bring eyemasks for a fully immersive experience.Brooklyn Raga Massive is a prolific artist collective who have gained accolades for “Expanding the notion of what raga—the immersive, epic form of Indian music—can mean…” (Wall St. Journal) and “Preserving the past while blurring genres in an inventive spirit,” (New York Times). All proceeds from the event will go to the Raga Massive 501-C3 non-profit to help produce the most ambitious event of the year: The epic 24 Hour/ 24 Set, Ragas Live Festival at Pioneer Works.

Henning Kraggerud, the soloist on this new recording of works for violin and orchestra, is delighted to be able to introduce Halvorsen’s Violin Concerto to a patient public. It was long thought to have been lost: “Ever since I was a little boy I have lamented the tragic loss of Halvorsen’s Violin Concerto which I read about in music books. Halvorsen’s Passacaglia on a theme by Handel is one of the most internationally performed pieces by a Norwegian composer. So, one wondered, how did his concerto, premièred by Kathleen Parlow and the Berlin Philharmonic in 1909, sound? Then, more than 100 years after the première, it reappears out of the blue in a library in Toronto. Here, then, is the World Première CD recording, and you can finally hear the concerto I have dreamt about since I was a boy.” The podcast is presented by Raymond Bisha.
In the beginning… Growing up in Madison, Wisconsin, Lyn began her love for music right from the beginning. Performing in school talent shows, city wide competitions or even just in her own living room; not a day went by for her without music in it.High school to College… At the age of 16, Lyn left her life of public high school in Madison, to attend the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan. She graduated from Interlochen with majors in Voice and Theater and moved onto a four year Musical Theater program at a University in St. Louis, MO where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. From St. Louis to New York… After graduation, Lyn headed for New York to begin the next phase of her life. Living in mid town Manhattan, Lyn began the difficult task of auditioning for shows. At long last, the audition that would change the course of the rest of her life came through. Lyn auditioned at Radio City Music Hall for a European production of “Miss Saigon” and got the part of Ellen. Perhaps the frustration and the fight for years in NY to even be seen was what fueled her motivation to let nothing stop her now that she had been offered a leading role in a big production. It was a good thing, because, not only would Lyn be moving to another country for the job, but, ‘oh by the way, the show will not be done in English; you'll have to learn German if you want the role. The European Experience… Lyn's career in Europe took off quickly. Even with the challenges of being a non native speaker, Lyn beat the odds and continued to get leading roles in other German and Austrian productions. She went from “Miss Saigon” in Stuttgart, Germany to the World Première of “Dance Of The Vampires” in Vienna, Austria. There she worked with Jim Steinman and Roman Polanski, as well as the late great Mr. Steve Barton. From Vampires to Prostitutes… Lyn's performance in ‘Vampires' earned her a nomination for best actress, and also earned her an invitation to audition for the European premiere of Frank Wildhorn's “Jekyll & Hyde.” In keeping with her drive and determination, Lyn walked into the first audition with the entire show memorized and every song learned. She landed the leading role as Lucy Harris, and moved back to Germany (this time in Bremen) to begin preproduction on what would later be considered the definitive production of “Jekyll & Hyde” world wide.Top of the Pops…While continuing her work on stage in “Jekyll & Hyde,” Lyn was approached to record and perform a duet with Italian singer Pierro Mozzocchetti. The duo were chosen to perform the song “L'Eternita” at the final box fight of Axel Schulz against Wladimir Klitchko. The song's instant success placed the two on the charts and opened the door for an amazing whirlwind of television and radio publicity, including appearances on Top Of The Pops, Millionaire Gesucht, The Bambi Awards, Night Of The Stars and many more. From Pierro to The Scorpions…Whether it was pure luck or alignment of the stars is unknown, but one simple flick of the TV changed the course of Lyn's path yet again. Klaus Meine of the world famous rock group the Scorpions, happened to be flipping through the channels and saw Lyn Performing with Pierro. Shortly after that performance aired, Rudolph Schenker, Klaus and their manager Peter Amend met with Lyn after attending one of her performances as Lucy in Jekyll & Hyde. The instant chemistry and desire to try something new paved the way for “Here In My Heart.” Lyn recorded the Diane Warren song with the group in Austria and debuted the tune at the Expo 2000 in Hanover, Germany. From the Scorpions to Lionel Richie…While juggling a stage production, an Italian duet and an amazing opportunity with the Scorpions, Lyn had yet another miracle on the way. Lionel Richie. Lyn and Lionel were both on their own publicity tours; Lionel with his song “Angel”, and Lyn & The Scorpions with “Here In My Heart.” They kept crossing paths in the same green rooms and TV shows and the two got along very well exchanging phone numbers and keeping in touch. Lionel asked Lyn to join him on stage at the Bremen Arena to perform “We Are The World” with him as well as Kevin and Howie from the Backstreet Boys. Needless to say, Lyn said yes and performed in the arena that holds over 14,000 people. The first Record Deal… Lyn's work in both the musical Theater world and the pop/rock world caught the attention of an entertainment company based out of Germany. Approaching Lyn with an exclusive artist agreement, including promises of work in movies, TV and music, Lyn took the deal. The decision required Lyn to discontinue her performances in Jekyll & Hyde and other stage productions so she could concentrate full time on recording and releasing her solo album. Unfortunately, Lyn got trapped in a deal that was not living up to it's promises. Due to their own internal problems, Lyn's album was never released, she was offered no work through the company, and she was not allowed to work for anyone else. Seeing no other alternative, Lyn began a very long and very difficult legal battle to free herself from the binds of the company. The emotional trauma of losing what she had worked so hard for was very trying, but Lyn did not cave under the stress of it all. She took the time she needed, got out of the bad deal and freed herself from the negative team she had around her.On Stage Again… After suffering through the legal battles with her record company, and surviving some very trying personal tragedies as well, the dust finally began to settle and Lyn found herself free to begin again. Lyn was approached about an Austrian production of Frank Wildhorn's “Dracula” that was to include original music that had not been part of the production in New York. Blown away by the power of the music and the depth of the character, Lyn accepted the leading role of Mina and took to the stage again in a blaze of theatrical passion with her costars Uwe Kröger and Thomas Bouchart. And Now…At Last… After so many years of working in-between the two worlds of rock and theater, Lyn has found a way to combine both worlds into one. She has put together an extraordinary band, has found an amazing co-producer and brought together some incredible talents in the music industry. This new team of people she has around her now has resulted in the power behind her album “At Last”, available at the online store here as well as Amazon, CD Baby and Itunes. Lyn and her co-writer have created an epic sound that bridges the world of theatrical passion and the heat of Rock. The Theatrical-Rock sound is funky, sexy, tough and beautiful. Lyn has come out strong, powerful and better then ever.
