The very busy actress, Laila Robins, was recently seen in Ryan Murphy's anthology series, American Horror Stories. She also has a recurring role as Colonel Grace Mallory on the hugely popular Amazon series, The Boys. Laila starred opposite Amanda Seyfried in the Apple+ limited series, The Crowded Room and opposite Joshua Jackson and Alec Baldwin in the Hulu limited series, Dr. Death. She also recurred memorably as Katarina Rostova on the hit NBC series The Blacklist, and she had a major arc playing Pamela Milton on the final season of AMC's The Walking Dead. Among, Laila's many film appearances are: Eye in the Sky, Side Effects, Blumenthal, Concussion, The Good Shepherd, An Innocent Man, Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael, True Crime, and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. You may have also seen her in such TV series as: The Handmaid's Tale, Homeland, Deception, 30 Rock, So Help Me Todd, Bull, Person of Interest, Blue Bloods, Damages, In Treatment, The Sopranos, Law and Order, and the series lead in Gabriel's Fire opposite the late, legendary James Earl Jones. Laila's work on Broadway includes Heartbreak House, the Tony-nominated play Frozen, and The Real Thing, as well as Off-Broadway in: the quartet of Richard Nelson's Apple Family plays. She's also appeared around the U.S. in numerous stage performances in shows such as: The Lady from Dubuque, Antony and Cleopatra, A Midsummer's Night's Dream, Sore Throats, Tiny Alice, Mrs. Klein, The Merchant of Venice, and many productions at The Guthrie in her hometown of St. Paul/Minneapolis, including Hedda Gabler and The Lion in Winter. Over the years, I've enjoyed quite a few of Laila's on-screen performances in shows of which I'm a big fan, including everything she did in The Walking Dead, Homeland, The Blacklist and The Boys. Laila never hits a false note even when the stories in which she's acting brilliantly defy reality.Of note: Laila also happens to be married to a favorite StoryBeat guest, and someone to whom I owe a great debt of gratitude, the phenomenal actor and singer, Robert Cuccioli, who originated the roles of Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde in the musical I created with Frank Wildhorn, Jekyll & Hyde.

At the beginning of this season, I spoke with writer and producer Steve Cuden about his early collaborations with composer Frank Wildhorn. He gives us the real story behind the creation of the Jekyll & Hyde musical, which differs from the way Wildhorn tells the tale. We also get into his other writings and how he transitioned into teaching and also podcasting. A few months after his interview with me, he brought me onto his own podcast called StoryBeat, where I discussed my own ups and downs in this career as well as how I approach auditions and performances. So today I'm sharing our conversation where the microphone and questions are turned around on me, and I share more my own story, giving you a behind the scenes look at my own and even this podcast. --- Support Why I'll Never Make It and find previous episodes by going to whyillnevermakeit.com. The actor, singer, and podcaster, Patrick Oliver Jones has been in the performing arts, both onstage and onscreen, for more than 30 years. Originally from Birmingham Alabama, he brought his Southern charm to New York City in 2008 with dreams of Broadway. And he's gotten close with roles in off-Broadway world premieres, touring nationally with The Addams Family and Evita, and the pre-Broadway cast of First Wives Club that never quite made it. Having collaborated with Tony-winning directors such as Jerry Zaks, Randy Skinner, and a favorite StoryBeat guest, Richard Maltby Jr., he's gotten to perform alongside Broadway talents like Joey Fatone, Alfonso Ribeiro, Faith Prince, and Andrea McArdle. And he has found regional theater acclaim with Henry and SALT Award nominations for standout performances in Fun Home and Crazy for You. On camera, there have been numerous national commercials, award-winning short films, and co-starring roles on TV shows like Blue Bloods, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and Imposters. In 2022 he received the Communicator Award of Distinction from the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts for his work in podcasting. He currently produces and hosts three performing arts podcasts: Why I'll Never Make It, which is in its eighth season, Closing Night, which focuses on Broadway history, and The Spotlight Series in which he talks with those making a difference in the arts and beyond. For the record, I've been a guest on Why I'll Never Make It discussing my career in show business and how I created Jekyll & Hyde, the Musical with Frank Wildhorn. I've got to tell you, it was a lot of fun for me to do the show with Patrick, and I highly urge you to give it a listen.

Edward Seckerson meets the prolific Frank Wildhorn ahead of the West End opening of Your Lie in April, his latest venture (after Death Note) into the realms of Japanese Manga. From one huge Whitney Houston hit – ‘Where Do Broken Hearts Go' – to well over a thousand songs and countless musicals, his is quite a story. At one time in the late '90s he had three musicals running simultaneously on Broadway. One of them, Jekyll & Hyde, has become one of the most performed and most revered all over the globe, while ‘This is the Moment' can lay claim to being the most sung competition and audition choice ever. Then there's the cult following growing for Bonnie & Clyde and the little matter of an 11 o'clock number he penned for Julie Andrews…
After starting out in Pop Music in the 1980s-1990s, Frank Wildhorn made a transition to Musical Theatre with his first hit show being Jekyl & Hyde. Now nearly 30 years on, Frank has written over 40 musicals including Bonnie & Clyde, Carmen and Camille Claudel. In more recent years, Frank has also been exploring the manga genre with his show Death Note winning Best Musical in South Korea before a series of sold-out concerts in the West End last year. This year, he's returned with another exciting new show: Your Lie in April, another adaptation of a popular Manga series which sold out 2 concerts at the prestigious Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. The show is now due to return for a 12 week run at the Harold Pinter Theatre in the West End, with a cast led by Dean John Wilson and Zheng Xi Yong.In this brand new interview with Frank Wildhorn, he talks about the development of Your Lie in April and Death Note, and why it feels so exciting to bring these shows to London with majority Asian casts. He tells us about his fondness for Japan and South Korea, and his appreciation for audiences in those regions who have really welcomed and celebrated his work. He credits his son for being a major driver in his involvement with these shows. We also hear him look back over his career, making the move from pop music to musical theatre and how he's managed to not get pigeonholed as an artist with him most recently composing the Danube Symphony that was premiered by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra at the Musikverein. It's a fascinating discussion with one of the most prolific composers working today and it'll be exciting to see what Frank brings next to London as he continues to work on a variety of projects.Your Lie in April opens at Harold Pinter Theatre on 28th June and runs till 21st September.
Alex James-Hatton is currently starring as Clyde in the UK & Ireland tour of Bonnie & Clyde The Musical. The show features music by Frank Wildhorn, lyrics by Don Black and book by Ivan Menchell. Alex made his professional debut covering JD, Ram and Kurt in the original cast of Heathers (The Other Palace / Theatre Royal Haymarket). His other theatre credits include: cover Elder Price in The Book of Mormon (UK & International Tour / West End), Lewis in Pippin (Charing Cross Theatre), Oscar Delancey in the UK premiere of Newsies (Troubadour Wembley Park) and Stranger Things: The First Shadow (workshop). In this episode, Alex discusses raising a little hell as Clyde, landing his first principal contract, his path into theatre and lots more. Legendary is an understatement. Frank Wildhorn is a renowned composer of not just some of the most beloved and iconic musical theatre shows to ever hit the stage, but also of chart-topping hits for artists like Kenny Rogers, Hootie & the Blowfish, and Whitney Houston. You will surely know shows like Jeckyl & Hyde, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Bonnie & Clyde – which is about to go out on a UK tour, and the incredibly successful recent West End concerts for Death Note. Now he has a brand-new adaptation of the manga Your Lie in April, which is about to play three concerts at Theatre Royal Drury Lane on April 8th and 9th. In this episode, we discuss his shows, his approach to composition, and some of the musicals that have inspired him. As an actor I fully appreciate and recognize that I couldn't do what I do without a writer doing what they do. Their words and characters are the basis for any work I've had in theater, television, or film. The writer's strike this past summer highlighted just how important they are, because without them there is no entertainment industry. In part one of my conversation with writer Steve Cuden, we talked about the process of creating the musical Jekyll & Hyde with Frank Wildhorn. For this second part of our discussion, we dive into his work in television, where he's written for shows like The Avengers, Biker Mice From Mars, Extreme Ghostbusters, and Pocket Dragon Adventures. Steve also gives us a crash course on what it takes to craft an engaging story that not only touches an audience but more importantly means something to the writer personally. For the first guest of this season, I'm talking with writer Steve Cuden, who was a part of a musical and its beginning stages, but was eventually replaced right before it began to take off and become the hugely iconic Jekyll & Hyde musical we all know. In fact, it was Steve's first foray into writing with another unknown composer and writer at the time, Frank Wildhorn. And in part one of our conversation, Steve opens up about their personal and professional relationship in ways that he has not done so before publicly. A little backstory...Steve and I actually met last year when he reached out to me via email after listening to an episode of my other podcast Closing Night, which focuses on theater history. That began a series of emails back and forth that eventually led me to invite him onto this podcast to share his side of the story. A side of the story that Frank Wildhorn himself doesn't really talk about in his own interviews. The 1986 demo version of "Murder, Murder" featured in this episode can be found on Cuden's website. Thirteen years after starring in Victor/Victoria across cinemas nationwide, Julie Andrews made a triumphant return to Broadway in this highly anticipated stage adaptation, directed by her husband Blake Edwards. In this emotional episode, experience Andrews' heartfelt opening night of joy as she was joined by a stellar cast of 32 performers. They included Broadway veterans like Tony Roberts, Rachel York, and Gregory Jbara The show featured both original film tunes and new compositions by Henry Mancini and Leslie Bricusse, with some help by Frank Wildhorn. Despite setbacks, including changes to the creative team, the untimely death of a composer, critical reviews, and internal squabbles, Victor/Victoria signified a remarkable comeback for Julie Andrews. To take you further behind the scenes of Wonderland, I'm sharing my conversation with E. Clayton Cornelious, who played the part of Caterpillar and is also a Broadway producer himself of such shows as Ain't Too Proud, Chicken and Biscuits, and New York, New York. In the previous episode, we explored the musical world of Frank Wildhorn and two of his shows that graced the Marquis Theatre for only about a month each, and E. Clay was a big help in putting that episode together. Now, you'll get our full interview, full of anecdotes and tidbits I couldn't fit into the mail episode. You'll learn about how he was ultimately cast in Wonderland and even more about what was going backstage during rehearsals and performances. And being a producer as well, E. Ever since he burst onto the Broadway scene in the 1990s, Frank Wildhorn has remained an intriguing figure in American Musical Theatre. But Wildhorn's journey is far from a conventional success story, nor was it a typical path to the Broadway stage. But among his seven Broadway musicals, three of them have appeared at the Marquis Theater: Victor/Victoria, Wonderland, and a 2013 revival production of Jekyll & Hyde. (In fact, the title of this episode comes from a New York Times review of that revival by Charles Isherwood.) Now, Victor/Victoria will actually get its own episode to close out the first season of this podcast, so this one is actually going to be a combo episode, covering the other two shows together. That's because they both share a lot in common: Wonderland and Jekyll & Hyde were both written by Wildhorn, both were based on famous literary stories, both were universally panned, and both of them ran for less than a month. Here are the stories of how and why that happened. Follow on Instagram and listen to Closing Night on your favorite podcast app. --- Closing Night is a production of WINMI Media with Patrick Oliver Jones as host and executive producer. "We are the pair that they'll discuss. Yes, this world will remember us." Ana Flavia Zuim is a multi-award winning musical director and conductor, musician and associate director of vocal performance at NYU. Her credits include the likes of associate conductor and vocal coach for Billy Elliot tours in the USA and the rehearsal pianist for Hamilton on Broadway. Anna joins Alexa this week on Singing Teachers Talk to discuss her work as a researcher in the field of forensic voice analysis. KEY TAKEAWAYS Anna's published paper on the voice started because she noticed there's not a lot of research on contemporary styles of vocalism that gives an indication of how much is too much. The original intent was to have both the measurements for an opera and a contemporary show and compare the two. About 3 or 4 years ago Anna visited colleagues at Harvard and discussed the KayPENTAX APM 3200, a pretty rare device that they don't make anymore. They decided to let her borrow it to collect data for her study. With this device they decided to measure the effect on three male identifying voices and three female identifying, this was made up of a major role, minor role, and ensemble for each. They measured separate phases of the show from learning lines to the show day. From the study Anna and the team found that the distance dose, how many cycles the vocal folds go through but converted to distance, was different between males and females. Female identifying singers sang approximately 3.23 miles per day and the male identifying singers about 2.34 miles. Anna believes we need to change the stigma around vocal injuries, singers feel like they need to push through and are reluctant to get help because of the culture in the theatre. Shows have physical therapists of masseuse for physical injuries, but don't have a vocal specialist. BEST MOMENTS ‘It was fascinating because it gave us an idea on the demands on the voice of preparing for a show' ‘I don't know if educating will change critics' ‘The stimaga about voice and voice injury is real' EPISODE RESOURCES BAST Training Guest Website: www.anaflaviazuim.com Social Media: @anaflaviazuim Relevant Links & Mentions: Journal of Voice: www.jvoice.org Vocal Dose and Vocal Demands in Contemporary Musical Theatre by Ana Flavia Zuim, Celia F Stewart & Ingo R Titze: https://www.jvoice.org/article/S0892-1997(21)00278-2/ppt Studied Productions: The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart & Wonderland by Frank Wildhorn & Jack Murphy Maurice E Goodwin SLP Vocal Health Education Example: Astonishing from Little Women by Sutton Foster Ben Platt and Dear Evan Hansen Matt Edwards and the Asbury Park Press (Jon Bon Jovi vocal issues: What is going on and how can it be fixed?): https://eu.app.com/story/entertainment/music/2022/05/09/jon-bon-jovi-voice-vocal-issues-bad-singing/9661274002/ ABOUT THE GUEST Ana Flavia Zuim is a multi award-winner musical director/conductor and an accomplished pianist, vocologist, electric bassist and expert witness. After a hugely acclaimed 2 shows in the Bonnie & Clyde the Musical concert, George Maguire is preparing to return to the role of Buck Barrow in Frank Wildhorn's beloved show. Reuniting with Nick Winston, the director of the sell-out Theatre Royal, Drury Lane concerts, George will be reprising his role in the new limited run of Bonnie & Clyde at the Arts Theatre from 9 April. There is already much anticipation around this new production from musical theatre fans, especially after the success of the concert earlier in the year. The upcoming run will also see the return of Natalie McQueen as Blanche Barrow and Frances Mayli McCann as Bonnie Parker. West End star Jordan Luke Gage will also be joining the cast as the eponymous Clyde Barrow and musical theatre fans are preparing to be wowed once more by the show. In this special interview, George Maguire sat down to talk about his love for Frank Wildhorn and his intrigue from the story of Bonnie & Clyde. Fresh from his run in The Wicker Husband at the Watermill Theatre, George tells us about his excitement at returning to London's West End to bring this show to audiences for a full run. A veteran performer, George Maguire has starred in shows such as Thrill Me, Hair, Oliver and won the Olivier Award for his role as Dave Davies in Sunny Afternoon. He earned huge praise from audiences and critics for his portrayal of Buck Barrow and we expect his performance to be another highlight of Nick Winston's production. In the interview, George also reflects candidly on the real life story of Bonnie & Clyde, acknowledging the victims of their crimes and reminds listeners that these characters aren't necessarily "heroes" either. Nevertheless, with the ongoing popularity of true crime stories, we expect this production to be a huge hit and can't wait see George Maguire's performance.Bonnie & Clyde runs at the Arts Theatre, London from 9 April - 10 July. Tickets are on sale now!
Broadway Drumming 101 is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Based in NYC since 2011, Adam came to New York by way of Houston, TX where he completed his Master's Degree at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music (2008). Adam grew up in Northeast Ohio where he attended Cleveland State University (2006). Formally studying classical percussion throughout his education, Adam also actively performed as a freelancer on drum set. His classical background combined with his drum set skills gave him a unique set of skills that turned out to be very well-suited for working in musical theater. After playing its out-of-town tryout at Houston's Alley Theatre, Adam was offered the drum set chair on Frank Wildhorn's WONDERLAND when it transferred to Broadway (Spring 2011). With his foot in the door from his first Broadway show, Adam set about the work of subbing and building a reputation in and around the city. Subbing on shows as diverse as RENT, EVITA, MATILDA the Musical, AVE Q, CATS, HELLO DOLLY, ANASTASIA, THE PROM, and many more, Adam routinely demonstrates a wide-ranging versatility. A unique hybrid player, Adam is equally at home playing drum set and percussion and excels in situations that demand both contemporary drum set styles and legit classical/orchestral sensibilities. Adam's most recent NYC chairs include 2017's BANDSTAND on Broadway (TONY Nomination for Best Orchestrations and TONY WINNER for Best Choreography), Jerry Springer the Opera, and CLUELESS the Musical. When not in the theater, Adam is often found in NYC recording studios playing for singer/songwriters and composers like Desi Oakley, The Jack Mosbacher Band, Michael Mott, and David Mallamud, playing at cabaret spots like Feinstein's 54 Below, and downtown concert venues such as Rockwood Music Hall, Piano's, or The Bitter End. Adam also maintains an active teaching practice at his studio in Midtown Manhattan and produces music and drum tracks from his at-home project studio. It's one of Steve's favorite melodramatic musicals and it stars an actor whose acting style and face can both be described as "exceptionally hammy." This week we dive into our first musical dissection (that's not a porn parody) and discuss some of the hit songs from the 1990 Frank Wildhorn musical "Jekyll and Hyde," and specifically the 2001 performance starring Songtopsy alumni David Hasselhoff. "Embrace it", "there's always a tomorrow" as hosts Bobby and Kristina discuss 2004's Dracula, The Musical and 2006's Lestat on episode eighteen of My Favorite Flop. ABOUT DRACULA, THE MUSICAL Based on the Victorian novel by Bram Stoker, Dracula, The Musical tells the story of the famed vampire as he lusts for new blood. Jonathan Harker and Mina Murray fall victim to Dracula's unnatural charm and, along with Doctor Van Helsing, must fight Dracula's supernatural powers. The musical features music by Frank Wildhorn and book and lyrics by Christopher Hampton and Don Black. Following a record-breaking run at the La Jolla Playhouse in 2001, the musical finally opened on Broadway to mostly negative reviews 3 years later in 2004. Though this production was intended as a serious, dramatic interpretation of the source material, critics complained of a complete lack of emotion in general, and of suspense and horror in particular. Also, while the plot of the musical hits all the major points of Stoker's novel, critics felt it did so in such an obtuse way that audience members unfamiliar with the story may find themselves unable to comprehend the action. Despite failing on Broadway, the musical has gone on to become extremely popular throughout Europe and Asia. The musical made its international debut at Theater St. Gallen, Switzerland in 2005, with notable productions following in the UK, Tokyo, and Seoul. Original Broadway Cast Melissa Errico as Mina Murray Tom Hewitt as Dracula Stephen McKinley Henderson as Abraham Van Helsing Chris Hoch as Arthur Holmwood Kelli O'Hara as Lucy Westenra Darren Ritchie as Jonathan Harker Bart Shatto as Quincey Morris Don Stephenson as Renfield Shonn Wiley as Jack Seward Lena Hall as Second Vampire Melissa Fagan as Third Vampire Jenifer Foote as First Vampire Michael Herwitz as Child Pamela Jordan as Third Vampire (Alternate) Elizabeth Loyacano as Second Vampire (Alternate) Tracy Miller as First Vampire (Alternate) Matthew Nardozzi as Child (Alternate) Graham Rowat as Ensemble ABOUT LESTAT Inspired by three of the novels in Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles, Lestat tells the story of a man who escapes the tyranny of his oppressive family only to have his life taken from him by the vampire, Magnus. The musical features music by Elton John, lyrics by Bernie Taupin, and a book by Linda Woolverton. Officially the highest-earning pre-Broadway play in San Francisco history (beating out Wicked AND Cats), Lestat finally opened on Broadway at the Palace Theater on March 25, 2006 after a series of drastic revisions. Reviews of the Broadway production were uniformly negative. Ben Brantley famously described the show as a "musical sleeping pill" and Peter Marks of the Washington Post remarked that apparently "a gay vampire with a two-octave range can be just as dull as a straight one." The musical closed on May 28, 2006, after 33 previews and 39 performances. An Original Broadway Cast Recording was recorded by Mercury Records a week earlier, however, after the show's closing, Elton John's management stated "there are no plans to release the recording..." Lestat has not been seen again (at least officially) since its original run. Original Off-Broadway Cast Hugh Panaro as Lestat Carolee Carmello as Gabrielle Allison Fischer as Claudia Michael Genet as Marius Roderick Hill as Nicolas Drew Sarich as Armand Jim Stanek as Louis Rachel Coloff as Ensemble Nikki Renée Daniels as Eleni Joseph Dellger as Magnus Colleen Fitzpatrick as Ensemble Patrick Mellen as Ensemble Chris Peluso as Ensemble Dominique Plaisant as Ensemble Megan Reinking as Beautiful Woman Will Swenson as Marquis/Laurent Tommar Wilson as Ensemble
