There’s been a wave of finales recently, which means it’s time for another batch of premieres, giving us plenty of new TV to discuss on the podcast. Noel and Kate kick things off with our week in TV, starting with the comedies, including the series finale of Wyatt Cenac’s Problem Areas, grown-ish, Jane the Virgin, and the finale of Gentleman Jack. Then we move over to drama, including the premiere of Pose, another interesting Elementary, and the premieres of Claws and Queen Sugar. Afterward, it’s time for the spotlight section, and this episode, we dive in with the first season of Netflix’s twisty, grief-fueled Dead to Me, starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini. Take a listen, then reach out and let us know what TV you’re following this summer, and whether you’ll be back for season two of Dead to Me. It’s the first of several high-profile finales this month here at The Televerse. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend wrapped up its run with a thoughtful, emotional finale, not to mention an hour-long concert special, so Noel and Kate welcome back friend of the show Allison Shoemaker to send Rebecca Bunch off in style, spotlighting the series finale. Before that, though, there’s plenty of TV to discuss. We kick things off with the comedies and some reality, including the premieres of Wyatt Cenac’s Problem Areas and The Last O.G., a check-in with What We Do in the Shadows, the finale of Schitt’s Creek, and RuPaul’s Drag Race. Then it’s time for the drama and genre offerings, including the premiere of Killing Eve, a Nazi-punching The Good Fight, the premiere of The Bold Type, the finale of The Promised Neverland, and a ‘70s-set DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. Take a listen, then reach out with your favorite Crazy Ex-Girlfriend moments, your thoughts on the finale, and more.Spotlight: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend series finale with Allison Shoemaker (1:12:15)Our Week in Comedy and Reality Wyatt Cenac’s Problem Areas premiere (13:14) The Last O.G. premiere (19:02) What We Do in the Shadows (24:46) Schitt’s Creek finale (28:15) RuPaul’s Drag Race (30:44)Our Week in Drama and Genre Killing Eve premiere (42:00) The Good Fight (48:07) The Bold Type premiere (54:54) The Promised Neverland finale (59:59) DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (1:04:04)Music Featured: “Maybe This Time” from Cabaret, as performed by Emily Hampshire on Schitt’s Creek; “Raspberry Beret” by Prince, as performed by Christine Baranski and Audra McDonald on The Good Fight; “Eleven O’Clock” from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Comedian Wyatt Cenac discusses how he wanted to distinguish his HBO docuseries Wyatt Cenac's Problem Areas from his work as a correspondent on The Daily Show including forgoing the traditional studio audience and creating a fun retro 70s look for the show. He talks about checking his own biases to explore different perspectives on the contentious issue of policing urban communities, what he wants to learn about America’s education system in Season 2 of Problem Areas, and why the topic of school choice is so controversial. Plus we get into the college admissions scandal, goat yoga, and more. Season 2 of Wyatt Cenac's Problem Areas debuts Friday, April 5 at 11 p.m. ET on HBO. If you've ever been struck by the beauty that fills the screen while watching a particular film or television show you have the cinematographer to thank. The cinematographer - or Director of Photography - is responsible for helping the director achieve their vision; and whether the goal is to create an eye catching effect or to simply make natural light look 'natural' on film, the cinematographer commands a unique combination of creative intuition and technical expertise to achieve success. This week- Amita and Sean speak with Graham Willoughby, the cinematographer of a number of incredible documentaries including the Oscar winning 20 Feet from Stardom and the hit doc of the summer, Won't You Be My Neighbor? Graham discusses the road that led him to be one of the most sought after non-fiction DPs working today. He also discusses television projects he has worked on (Abstract, Wyatt Cenac's Problem Areas) and how he manages to work in a number of different genres including music, biography and comedy. And in the latest Big Sell, Amita reviews the Frank Ocean-centric podcast Dissect and Big Sells Sean a song and video combo by the group Ibeyi. The TV Gods give and the TV Gods taketh away. That’s right, it’s time for upfronts, which means the networks are in the midst of announcing their renewals and cancelations for the coming year. Fortunately, after we recorded, they reconsidered one of the hardest hits of the recent announcements, with NBC picking up Brooklyn Nine-Nine for a sixth season. However, that’s only the start of the conversation this week, with lots of shows delivering compelling, emotional, and fun episodes. First up, Noel and Kate dive in with the comedies and reality, including the (series?) finale of Atlanta, the finale of Mom, The Last OG, a dramatic Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and RuPaul’s Drag Race. Then we move over to drama and genre, including the premieres of Vida and Sweetbitter, super tense episodes of The Americans and Killing Eve, character-redefining episodes of Timeless and Agents of SHIELD, and an alternatingly beautiful, sad, and shocking Steven Universe two-parter. Afterward, we round out the podcast by spotlighting the interesting and funny documentary series Wyatt Cenac’s Problem Areas, currently flying under the radar on HBO on Friday evenings.Spotlight: Wyatt Cenac’s Problem Areas (1:32:54)Our Week in Comedy and Reality Atlanta finale (14:19) Mom finale (22:45) The Last OG (25:41) Brooklyn Nine-Nine (28:07) RuPaul’s Drag Race (32:44)Our Week in Drama and Genre Vida premiere (44:16) Sweetbitter premiere (48:09) The Americans (53:17) Killing Eve (56:14) Timeless (1:00:42) Agents of SHIELD (1:03:58) Steven Universe (1:10:05)Music Featured: “I Shall Be Released” by Nina Simone; “That Distant Shore,” performed by Jennifer Paz in Steven Universe’s “Can’t Go Back”
