Global markets are sliding — and this week's selloff is shaking everything from oil and gas to bonds and gold. Dan Coatsworth and Danni Hewson break down what's driving the volatility, how past geopolitical conflicts have affected stock markets, and what it all means for investors, portfolios, and your money right now.  We also unpack Chancellor Rachel Reeves' Spring Statement, including the key wins, the potential risks, and what the new OBR forecasts could mean for your personal finances, UK economy outlook, and interest rates.  In company news, Greggs surprises the market despite falling profits, TG Jones (the new name in front of old WH Smith stores) struggles on the high street, and BrewDog investors face a harsh lesson in why crowdfunding is not the same as stock market investing.  There's also an important update on wills you'll want to know about — plus two expert interviews exploring the biggest trend in global markets: AI investing.  Orbis' Simon Skinner discusses US sectors with an AI tailwind, while Brown Advisory's Colby Stilson explains why major tech names are issuing bonds to fund massive AI infrastructure projects.  A huge week, big market moves, and crucial insights for anyone following investment markets, financial news, and longterm investing.  If you enjoy this episode, please like and subscribe.    Timestamps  [02:16] – Market sell-off: What's moving shares, oil, gas & bonds  [02:43] – Middle East tensions: How markets behaved in past conflicts  [15:39] – Spring Statement: What Rachel Reeves' update means for your money  [19:11] – Greggs results reaction  [24:11] – TG Jones struggles on the high street  [27:54] – BrewDog takeover and the risks of crowdfunding  [32:17] – Free Will Month explained  [34:50] – AI interview 1: US sectors with an AI tailwind (Simon Skinner, Orbis)  [48:40] – AI interview 2: Why big tech is issuing bonds (Colby Stilson, Brown Advisory)  [01:00:48] – Closing & next week's ISA special

When the Labour government came in, they stopped the entire oil industry overnight. They didn't change legislation. They announced a moratorium on licensing and exploration. That was effective immediately. My question is to the government, why not do the same with special forestry tests and land conversions in this country?  It's convenient for them to leave it- and the longer they leave it, and the more farmland that goes into forestry, the better it looks in terms of our objectives under the Paris accord.

1. Markets are under pressure to start the day. This dip comes as Target (TGT) reported earnings that were impressing Wall Street. Today, Target stock is trading lower by 25%. This is the biggest one day decline that I can remember in the stock. Today's news from Target echoed Walmarts (WMT) report yesterday. The bottom line, inflation and supply shortages are hurting earnings. This news is really weighing on most of the leading retailer stocks today. When companies fail to hit their numbers, look out below. 2. MBA Mortgage Applications -11.0% wk/wk (purchase apps -12.0% wk/wk and -15.0% yryr). This news is also hurting the home-builder stocks today. 3. Gold is flat today, but holding up at the moment. Silver can't catch a bid. 4. Bitcoin is now trading slightly lower falling below the psychological 30,000 level. The pattern is developing, but remember the trend is down. Trend is down on all the cryptos.

Let's Get After it with Chris Cuomo

In today's episode, Chris contends that a lot of the noise around 'if' the reconciliation bill will get done is overly hyped. He thinks it's a given that the Dems will get it done,  it's more a question of what it will look like. But the same measure does not apply to the push for voting rights, after the Senate GOP torpedoed any chance of overriding the filibuster and reaching the 60 vote threshold to even debate Joe Manchin's paired down version. So where does this leave the Dems? The GOP? Us?And Another Thing: Now that the FDA is preparing to review and likely approve the COVID vaccine for our 5-11 year olds, will you give it to your kiddos?

Mid April usually means one thing tax day. This year, the IRS has postponed the deadline by a month. Get on it if you are running behind! This year, mid April is all about COVID vaccines. Good news is that I’ve now received my second dose of the COVID vaccine. Bad news is that I’m feeling a bit under the weather. Instead of preparing a separate issue for the “Explore” section, this week, I touch on two topics that have been on my mind. Let me know which one you think I should do a deep dive on next. As always, I welcome your feedback. Thanks y’all! News Coinbase goes publicCoinbase shares ended their first trading day priced at $328 implying a valuation of $68B. That puts them in between UBS and Goldman Sachs. Unlike during an IPO, Coinbase did not issue additional shares for its direct listing. The only shares available were sold by employees and investors. Notably, the CEO sold 1.5% of his shares for $290M. A few eyebrows were raised when the CFO sold all of her shares for about $100M. Blackouts in China slows bitcoin miningXinjiang and Sichuan provinces of China account for more than 50% of global bitcoin mining activity A series of accidents at coal-powered plants in Xinjiang led to government mandated power outages These outages led to ~20% drop in bitcoin mining i.e. computing power to secure the network. This underlines the risks of concentration and need for greater distribution of bitcoin mining capacity around the world.US minority speaker says bitcoin is geopolitically strategicKevin McCarthy, the Republican minority speaker of the US House of Representatives, stated that bitcoin and other digital currencies are geopolitically strategic. I see 2 strands to pull here: a) China could drive adoption of its new digital currency by strong-arming aid-receiving countries and business partners. This could challenge the US dollar status as the global reserve currency.b) As more US investors embrace bitcoin, the risk rises of contagion spreading if a catastrophic event impacted bitcoin. Citigroup’s former chairman joins crypto payments firm Dick Parsons became the first member of Celo’s external board. This is a significant vote of confidence in this 4-year old organization. Celo aims to empower anyone with a smartphone anywhere in the world to access financial services, send money to phone numbers, and pay merchants Celo’s ecosystem includes a variety of applications including stablecoins. Stablecoins are pegged to the value of another commodity like the US dollar. They improve on the existing system by enabling near real-time Canada approves 2 ethereum ETFs in one dayTwo months after Canadian regulators approved Bitcoin ETFs, they have now approved 2 ethereum ETFsA crypto ETF mimics the price of the cryptocurrency. This gives investors exposure to the cryptocurrency without buying the asset class. Additionally, in South Africa, there are plans to launch a bitcoin ETF. Closer to home, the US SEC still has not approved a bitcoin ETF. Dozens have been proposed over the past 8 years, there a couple under review. ExploreFuture of faster payments: Who will win? The Federal Reserve Bank and US banks are investing millions (probably billions) in implementing a faster payments network. This new system will provide near instant final settlement within the US. Unbeknown to most, when you swipe your card at your favorite grocery store, the money does not instantly get delivered to the merchant. This process can take a couple days to several weeks! The new solution will shrink that to seconds. In parallel, crypto enthusiasts are building out the lightning network on top of bitcoin blockchain. One start-up, Strike, is working to build a global payments network that would enable low-cost, final settlement of domestic and cross-border payments without using the likes of Visa or banks. Will these two systems co-exist? Will regulators or merchants prefer one to the other? What is going to happen to traditional cross-border heavyweights like Western Union? I’ve got so many questions. I might do a longer study into this. Bitcoin mining - a driver for sustainable development? It’s been argued that bitcoin mining is the most profitable use for stranded energy that is otherwise not economically feasible to develop or export. Oil and gas companies in the US and Canada are using gas that would have been flared to power bitcoin minesCould this be extended to lower carbon energy? Could bitcoin mining subsidize the development of hydroelectric dams or solar farms in Africa? So many questions here! I might do a longer study into this too. Let me know what you think and if you have a preference for which area I should dig in next. Until next time, I hope you stay safe and healthy. Have a great week! This is a public episode.
