In 2021 Mary Neely and Kareem Rahma met at a Brooklyn comedy show. A week later they found themselves crammed at a downtown restaurant, elbows tucked and leaning forward, deep in discussion about an age-old argument: are men only nice to women who they want to have sex with? A settlement was never reached. Not long after, Kareem posted a still of Mathieu Kassovitz' LA HAINE to his Instagram with the words, “I'm quitting comedy until someone casts me in a dramatic role.” Mary responded, “I'll cast you.” The goal was set: write a joint personal essay, conversing about sensitive topics, and transcribing everything into the structure of a film that would be feasible to produce on a microbudget. Kareem Rahma is a three-time Webby-nominated writer, producer, comedian, and musician. He's also the creator and host of two hit digital series: KEEP THE METER RUNNING and SUBWAYTAKES, which have both amassed 100s of millions of views on TikTok and Instagram. Mary Neely is an actor, writer, and director. She directed and edited the short film PINK TRAILER, which premiered at SXSW, played opening night of Palm Springs ShortFest and was featured in i-D, Paper Magazine, and Refinery29 before being selected by the Milwaukee Film Institute to screen before Olivia Wilde's BOOKSMART in theaters. In this interview, we talk about the role of short form content in their careers, its impact on their work, and the advantages of a DIY approach, the challenges and rewards of self-producing films, the importance of constraints and much more. https://www.patreon.com/This week, Ana & Matthew switch it up and record an episode at Ana's spot. They sit down with very tall dudes, Kareem Rahma and Adam Faze, who created the TikTok taxi show Keep The Meter Running where Kareem has NYC cabbies take him to where they want to go (nice lil uno reverse). They discuss some wacky stories in producing the show, The Grammys, the Chinese spy balloon and Kareem's song "Really Rich Parents", the music video for which Ana had a starring role in.
Kareem Rahma is a lot of things. He's a standup comedian, a podcaster, a documentarian, and is the host of a buzzing new TikTok show, Keep the Meter Running. He's also a naturally-gifted, mostly-irregular golfer, who joined the Shrinks for a lively conversation about New York City, therapy, and making fun of your friends. Weekly phone calls with his therapist are taken during long walks around his neighborhood; a relationship that inspired a podcast concept, Walks of Life, which features one-sided confessionals from young people around the country. Kareem is deeply funny — and insightful, inquisitive, thoughtful. In this session: running amok, fake lawyers, a good ol' Pimento Cheese slagging. A new series hosted by comedian Kareem Rahma explores the lives and stories of NYC cab drivers. "Keep the Meter Running" is a TikTok show that follows cab drivers as they take Rahma on adventures around the city, whether that be to a driver's favorite Moroccan restaurant or to Pier 40 to kick around a soccer ball with a preprofessional player turned cab driver. Along the way the cab drivers share life lessons and tidbits of wisdom, and at the end Rahma covers the fare, costs of meals, and a 15% tip. Rahma joins to discuss.

Man Up | Masculinity, Race, and Relationships in the Modern World
What exactly was going through Kareem Rahma’s 20-year-old head when he found out his father only had 6 months to live?As he tells it, nothing. He was entirely fixated on how the family dynamic was about to change. As the eldest sibling, as the oldest boy, he was certain that the responsibilities of his father, financial and otherwise, were his to inherit. This week on Man Up, Aymann talks with Kareem about how he may have put that pressure on himself. Tell us what you think about this and other topics by leaving a voicemail at 805-626-8707 or emailingmanup@slate.com. We may feature you on the show.
