We Are Each Other's Harvest: The Hidden Legacy of Black American Farming with Author Natalie Baszile

Land Food Life Podcast

Dive into the hidden legacy of Black American farming with author Natalie Baszile as she unpacks the complex relationship between African Americans and the land that has shaped our nation. This eye-opening conversation takes us through her journey creating "Queen Sugar" – the acclaimed novel adapted by Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey – and her anthology "We Are Each Other's Harvest," which brings to life the true stories of Black farmers across American history.Baszile reveals how her ancestral connections to farming (her great-great-grandfather acquired 600 acres in Alabama after the Civil War) subtly influenced her writing path, creating a personal connection to stories that needed telling. With remarkable insight, she illuminates the systematic discrimination that led to Black farmers losing approximately 90% of their land throughout the 20th century, while simultaneously celebrating the resilience, innovation, and determination that have characterized the Black farming experience.Basile's nuanced approach to a painful history makes this conversation particularly valuable. Rather than focusing primarily on injustice, she articulates how modern BIPOC farmers are recalibrating relationships with land, transforming narratives from "get away from the land" to understanding land as a valuable community asset. Through the Black Harvest Fund she established, Basile puts action behind her words, supporting organizations doing vital work for BIPOC people in agriculture. This episode challenges us to broaden our understanding of American agricultural history beyond the stereotypical image of the white male farmer. As Basile powerfully states, "We have to broaden our understanding of who participated in this American experiment." Want to better understand the whole history of American farming and support a more equitable agricultural future? Start by exploring Natalie Basile's powerful books and consider contributing to initiatives that support Black farmers reclaiming their agrarian heritage.Learn More About Natalie:https://nataliebaszile.com/https://nataliebaszile.com/black-harvest-fund@nataliebaszile InstagramWe Are Each Other's HarvestKara's Offerings &  Services:https://www.landfoodlife.com/https://www.balanceyourgut.com/

"Legendary for an unusual combination of spiritual power, beauty, charisma, showmanship, intimidation, and shrewd business sense, Marie Leveau also was known for her kindness and charity, nursing yellow fever victims and ministering to condemned prisoners, and her devotion to the Roman Catholic Church. In separating verifiable fact from semi-truths and complete fabrication, Carolyn Morrow Long explores the unique social, political, and legal setting in which the lives of Laveau's African and European ancestors became intertwined in nineteenth-century New Orleans."      Madame Lalaurie, Mistress of the Haunted House. "A meticulous researcher of New Orleans history, Carolyn Long disentangles the threads of fact and legend that have intertwined over the decades. Was Madame Lalaurie a sadistic abuser? Mentally ill? Or merely the victim of an unfair and sensationalist press? Using carefully documented eyewitness testimony, archival documents, and family letters, Long recounts Lalaurie's life from legal troubles before the fire through the scandal of her exile to France to her death in Paris in 1849." On this amazing episode we  talk about finding your identity and caring your path in the sync space. We also talk about using emotion to push a message and what being the male Lizzo means. We also get into what labels are looking for and how to make your tracks even more suitable for sync.   Make sure to listen to the end because this podcast is AMAZING   James's Bio: James Gardin is a musician who's been around the block...a few times. With a 20-year career under his belt, this Lansing, Michigan native has seen it all - from playing to empty bars to performing with big-name artists like Bryce Vine, Jack Harlow, KING, MURS, Macklemore, and Quinn XCII. Gardin's music has been featured on TV shows and films like ESPN's " First Take , CW's "All American," ,"Queen Sugar," Bloom, and "Block Party," proving that he's not just a one-hit wonder. And if that's not impressive enough, he's also had his tunes played on Hot97 - you know, the radio station that's heard by more people than a screaming toddler in a quiet restaurant. But what really sets James Gardin apart is his niche. He creates empowering, encouraging music for TV, film, and fans alike, all while using faith as a sonic/lyrical foundation. He was an editor on Ava DuVernay's Queen Sugar and Lena Waithe's The Chi and we get to talk about the experiences and avenues that led to those roles as well as his overall journey into post-production.Like most professionals in creative industries, Sean's love for film manifested itself at an early age. At the age of 16, a film he made on homelessness on the subway earned him substantial accolades and money towards film school. We discuss how crucial it is to be proactive, the best attributes for an assistant editor to acquire and uncover how Sean's early experiences really illustrate how local organizations can provide a wealth of resources and access for creatives. Bruce Francis Cole is an esteemed cinematographer whose career has traversed both coasts of the United States and extended globally. Born and raised in Upstate New York, his artistic journey began in a surprising place—painting. Before transitioning to cinematography, Bruce honed his skills as a classical painter, drawing inspiration from the likes of Vermeer, Picasso, and Rembrandt. These formative years of artistic exploration instilled in him a deep understanding of color, light, and composition, which would later become the hallmark of his cinematic work.  Bruce's path to cinematography was as unique as it was diverse. Raised in the inner-city, his exceptional talent in visual art opened doors to experiences far beyond his immediate surroundings. Fuelled by his passion for social justice, Bruce embarked on a journey across America, dedicating himself to non-profit programs that aimed to make a positive impact on society. This period of exploration and activism eventually led him to discover film as a powerful art form.  His formal education in cinematography took place at both the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA), where he studied under luminaries like David Gordon Green and Jeff Nichols, and later, at The American Film Institute (AFI). At AFI, he refined his craft under the mentorship of renowned cinematographers Bill Dill, A.S.C., and Stephen Lighthill, A.S.C. This academic foundation paved the way for Bruce's ascent in the film industry.  Bruce's cinematic portfolio boasts a diverse range of projects, from TV shows like "Queen Sugar" and "Queer as Folk" to acclaimed films such as "Farewell Amor" and "Jinn." Notably, his international short film "Gringo Honeymoon" earned a nomination for Best Cinematography at The Madrid International Film Festival in 2015. Beyond these achievements, Bruce has lent his visual expertise to commercial giants like Nike and Apple, where he artfully blends creativity with commercial branding.  His passion for storytelling through the lens extends to his work with top-tier musicians, including Kendrick Lamar, Baby Keem, Lady Gaga, Jay-Z, Eminem, Shakira, T.I., Wyclef Jean, Chris Brown, Busta Rhymes, and Linda Perry, among others. Bruce's cinematography skills have graced music videos that have left an indelible mark on the industry.  This podcast delves into the intricate layers of Bruce Francis Cole's artistic journey, unveiling the intersections of painting, activism, and cinematography that have shaped his unique perspective. From his inner-city upbringing to his evolution as a visual artist, his story is a testament to the transformative power of art. Tune in to explore the vibrant palette of Bruce's cinematic world, where every frame is a masterpiece waiting to be discovered. Bruce Francis Cole Website: https://www.brucecoledp.com/Bruce Francis Cole's Socials: https://www.instagram.com/brucefcole/Bruce Francis Cole: https://gersh.com/production/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/COLE-B.-RES.pdfVisual Intonation Website: https://www.visualintonations.com/Visual Intonation Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/visualintonation/Vante Gregory's Website: vantegregory.comVante Gregory's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/directedbyvante/ To support me on Patreon (thank you): patreon.com/visualintonations Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@visualintonation Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@directedbyvante

The entertainment industry and its TV and film writers can't get on the same page. For the first time in over a decade, the Writers Guild of America is on strike. Shows like Saturday Night Live have already stopped production, with more to come as the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers try to reach a labor agreement. As networks and film studios continue make record-high profits, writers are fighting for livable wages and fair compensation in the streaming era. And for the Black writers and the community at large, there's much more at stake. For decades, Black writers were shut out of writers' rooms, unable to tell their own stories. As the industry changed, these scribes were only relegated to write comedy. Today, just a handful have made it to the top of the television hierarchy as showrunners. Anthony Sparks, a 20-year industry veteran told Trymaine Lee that for him, the strike is about making sure writing can continue to be a viable career path for people like him. Because if the industry doesn't change, Black writers could get squeezed out, and Black audiences risk losing representation, or worse – having outsiders control it.Follow and share the show on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, using the handle @intoamericapod.Thoughts?
