Matthew Shear IG: @matthew_shear takes us on the journey to cast Amanda Peet, Alessandro Nivola, and Judd Hirsch in his directorial debut. In the midst of a long and successful career as an actor, should you ever write your own film? Does it even make sense to follow your agent's advice about making more content?Matthew just wrapped as series reg, and Matt and Oren are curious about how and why he figured that making a film and getting into SXSW, was a good thing? Afterall this is a film that Oren's DP said they loved! So Matthew dives deep into what it means to be vulnerable. The blood, pain, and the angst, as only an actor can understand. And he takes us through how, after deciding to act and direct in the film he spent years toiling to write, he decided it might be best "for the film" if he were to give up his role as lead actor!!!Well... that's what happened, and not how it ended. Amanda Peet is in the new film ‘Fantasy Life' and the series ‘Your Friends & Neighbors.' In a recent piece in ‘The New Yorker,' she wrote about being diagnosed with breast cancer while both of her parents were in hospice. “I didn't really have that ‘why me?' thing. Maybe because I am Jewish and am always waiting for that other shoe to drop. In this case it was three shoes,” she told Terry Gross. Also, we'll talk about Toni Morrison with Harvard professor Namwali Serpell. She says no matter how many times she returns to Morrison's work, she finds something new.  She's still haunted by the last sentence of the novel ‘Sula.' “When that sentence comes into my life, whether I'm reading it to teach, whether I'm rereading it to write, whether I'm reading it out loud, even just now, tears always spring to my eyes," Serpell says. Dwain brings the data-driven Rookie Super Model. They don't always agree — and that's where it gets interesting. Jordyn Tyson is WR1 on the Big Board but WR3 in the Super Model. Carnell Tate is WR2 on the Big Board but WR1 in the Model. Denzel Boston grades out as a borderline first-round pick on the Big Board but the Model's closest comps are Cedric Tillman, Javon Baker, and Jakobi Meyers. Nicholas Singleton is RB6 on the Big Board but RB3 in the Model. We go prospect by prospect through every wide receiver, running back, and tight end to find where scouting and data agree — and where they clash.

Thank you for listening to the Following Films Podcast. If you are anything like me, you are always searching for those rare stories that feel both intellectually sharp and deeply human, films that capture the messy, rhythmic chaos of life and relationships. Today, we are diving into a project that fits that description perfectly: the new romantic dramedy, Fantasy Life. Fresh off a triumphant run at the SXSW Film Festival—where it took home the Audience Award and a Special Jury Award for its star, Amanda Peet—Fantasy Life is a smart, New York-centric story written and directed by its lead, Matthew Shear. The film follows Sam Stein, played by Shear, a former paralegal who, after a panic attack, finds himself babysitting for his own psychiatrist. What follows is a summer on Martha's Vineyard involving a stalled actor played by Peet, her rock-bassist husband played by Alessandro Nivola, a house full of grandparents, and the delicate, shared history of mental illness. It features an incredible ensemble cast including legends like Judd Hirsch, Bob Balaban, and Holland Taylor. Joining me today is the multi-hyphenate behind the film, Matthew Shear, to talk about the transition from acting to the director's chair and the inspiration behind this "smart New York rom-com." Because there was so much to dig into regarding the writing process and this stellar cast, we have the entire conversation for you today, presented in two parts.Fantasy Life opens in New York on March 27th, with a nationwide theatrical release on April 3rd. Let's get into my interview with Matthew Shear.
