Today we're joined by actress Vella Lovell, whose path to the screen began with a childhood dream of Juilliard—sparked by a Babysitters Club character—and eventually led her to the school not once, but twice. Vella currently stars opposite Joel McHale in Fox's Animal Control, returning for its third season in 2025. She previously starred alongside Ted Danson and Holly Hunter in Mr. Mayor, earning a 2021 HCA TV Award nomination for her role as Chief of Staff Mikaela Shaw. She's also beloved for her standout turns as ‘Heather' in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. In this episode, Vella opens up about the intensity of Juilliard's training, booking her first pilot after a silent retreat, and how her background in classical piano unexpectedly informs her comedy work. She talks about navigating set life, the business side of acting no one teaches you, and why it's so important to celebrate the wins—big or small—along the way. What was once lost is now found. And for that, we can only say...we're sorry! It's our first side quest of the season and we're dishing up over a dozen never before heard podcast moments from over the past two years. These were conversations, tangents and the occasional meltdown that we sadly had to cut for time, even though they resulted in some of the biggest laughs we've ever had behind the mics! If that's not enough to entice you, many feature past guests—including Joanna Estep and Ronin of Rivia—a few offer unique glimpses behind the scenes, and at least one of them includes Valerie singing about mermaid sex. Plus, this entire episode was recorded AFTER last week's, which means we start things off pretty lit and they only get more unhinged from there.

In the year that Jacques Demy's beloved Umbrellas of Cherbourg turns 60, Mark Kermode and Ellen E Jones reflect on their favourite aspects of the screen musical.According to some, we're currently in the midst of a movie musicals revival, with Jon M Chu's Wicked hot on the heels of Emila Perez and Joker: Folie à Deux, but will any of them match what Ellen considers to be the pinnacle of the form, the 1950s Hollywood musical? Her love of the classic MGM musicals primed Ellen to be a huge fan of the TV show Crazy Ex Girlfriend when it came along. This is the musical sitcom that took all of these essential elements of the 1950s Hollywood musical, then recombined them with a very 21st Century approach to relationships and mental health. Ellen speaks with Crazy Ex Girlfriend creator and star Rachel Bloom about Disney, writing jokes for the screen, and spontaneous singing. But it's essential to pay proper tribute to the classics, and in particular the work of American lyricist and producer Arthur Freed. Ellen sat down with writer, filmmaker and actor Manuela Lazic to talk about Freed's masterpiece, 1952's Singin' in the Rain which stars Gene Kelly, who also co-directed with Stanley Donen. And Mark meets Janis Pugh, director of Chuck Chuck Baby, a low budget, British indie charmer set in a chicken processing factory that is deeply influenced by Jacques Demy's 1964 French hit The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Janis Pugh is not alone in her love of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. It follows the story of two young lovers whose future together is interrupted by the Algerian war, with the French dialogue entirely sung and set perfectly to the music of Michel Le Grand. Writer and editor of Little White Lies, David Jenkins, is a huge fan of Jacques Demy, and he speaks with Mark about the film's influences and legacy.Produced by Freya Hellier. A Prospect Street production for BBC Radio 4

Iowa City and GovEx collaborate to solve a problem: How do you gather ridership data without fares?--- In the latest episode of the Data Points podcast, GovEx and Iowa City staff about collaborative efforts to track bus ridership for a free-fare program aimed at reducing carbon emissions. Iowa City is a participant of the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative Data Track, a program aimed at connecting cities with coaches and data practitioners to build data skills and techniques to tackle complex challenges and improve residents' quality of life.---Iowa City bus ridership dropped precipitously during the pandemic and had not rebounded, leading the city to consider shifting to a free-fare program to increase ridership and help the city reach its goal of reduced carbon emissions. But, without fares to count, the city struggled to find a way to track ridership for a free-fare program to help it determine whether the increased ridership was having the desired impact. Rachel Bloom, the GovEx coach working with Iowa City, consulted GovEx data analyst Maeve Mulholland, who presented the city with a creative solution that leveraged data the city was already collecting.--- Since moving forward with its free-fare program, the city has used data to show an increased bus ridership of 40% - compared with a 10% post-pandemic increase nationwide - and a reduction in tailpipe carbon emissions by approximately 284 metric tons. It is now using an analysis of timing and location data to gain further insight into the program and to increase equity in access to public transportation.--- Learn more about Iowa City's Fare Free Pilot Program--- Learn more about GovEx--- Learn more about the Bloomberg Harvard Leadership Initiative

How much do you think about the Roman Empire? Emperor Nero's answer would have been “not that much.” At just 16 years old, Nero starts his reign off with a bang, throwing lavish festivals for the plebs and giving himself headlining gigs as an aspiring singer-songwriter. But thanks to a power-hungry mom, some heated rivalries, and a whole lot of sex with people who are not his wife, Nero goes down in actual flames. Rachel Bloom (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) joins Misha to tell the epic tale of how Nero's legacy went up in smoke.Follow The Big Flop on the Wondery app or wherever you get your podcasts. A Fresh Story, season 5, episode 7 We had the honor of talking to actress, artist, podcaster, and all around cool girl Rebecca Lee! We talked to Rebecca about her divorce, finding her way back to her career post-divorce, how we can tap into our confidence, and how she ditched the narratives in her life and found her own journey. Rebecca is brilliant, creative, funny, and one of our favorite cool girls - she is generous and kind and always looks like she's about to walk onto the stage. Rebecca Lee is a Los Angeles-based actor and filmmaker. She studied acting at Atlantic Acting School in New York City as well as the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in Los Angeles. Notable film and television credits include Crazy Ex-Girlfriend on the CW, Miranda July's Kajillionaire, and Comedy Central's Out of Office, written/directed by Paul Lieberstein and starring alongside Milana Vayntrub, Ken Jeong, Jay Pharoah, and Leslie Jones. She recently produced and starred as "A" in the Los Angeles premiere of An Intervention by Mike Bartlett at The Hudson Theatre in Los Angeles April-June 2022, completing the run at the Hollywood Fringe Festival. In addition to acting, Rebecca also has a passion for improv, performing every Monday night at 8pm in Holy Shit Improv at The Silverlake Lounge along with various other theaters throughout Los Angeles. She has a podcast called, How the Fuck...?, where she interviews her friends and peers on different mental health topics. Season one was titled How the Fuck Did You Get So Confident? and season two is How the Fuck Did You Bounce Back?. Notable guests include Rachel Bloom, Shelley Hennig, Milana Vayntrub & Ashley Johnson. Rebecca is also a writer and producer having the latest short film she produced, Beginner's Luck, starring Matthew Gray Gubler, Lauren Lapkus, Mary Holland, Ego Nwodim, herself, and others, win various awards on the festival circuit including the Grand Prize at the 2020 Hollywood Comedy Shorts Film Festival and the Audience Award at the Chicago Comedy Film Festival 2020. Whether she's acting, writing, directing, or producing, Rebecca is an artist first, looking to create projects that will act as a mirror held up to society, helping people to reflect on themselves and the world around them rather than hide from it. Enjoy this episode with Rebecca, check out her website, and follow Rebecca on Instagram. Listen to How the Fuck Did You…podcast here!

When Rachel Bloom was making a name for herself in comedy, she shared her life openly online. Then she became a mom and realized she wanted her daughter to decide for herself how online she would be. Sam asks Rachel how she balances her instinct to overshare with her desire to keep her child's life out of the public eye, how she came to combine her love for sketch comedy with her background in musical theater, and what she means when she tells Sam she fears creative atrophy. John and Craig welcome guests Quinta Brunson, Rachel Bloom and Natasha Lyonne to join them for a live benefit for Hollywood HEART. Since they cannot discuss the shows they're currently working on (strike rules!) they instead reflect on the surprising paths of their careers, how acting has influenced them as writers and directors, and how much is learned at every step of production. We're also joined by AMPTP spokesperson Nancy Sullivan to discuss our concerns with the ongoing strike, what she enjoys about her job, and why she finds it so fulfilling!
