New President, same bullshit, but perhaps slightly more annoying given the faux progressive pandering. Not to mention the cultural pandering! No matter how communal an aesthetic might feel, there’s always some asshole willing to sell it off to the political class. Hope everyone gets their half a vaccine so we can at least become cool … Continue reading "Episode 108 – Stuck in the Spectacle"

?Meet your new hosts, Darcie Wilder and Sarah Crowe!? The four of us discuss the different capitalist and white supremacist factions surrounding the “Stop the Steal” riots at the Capitol. The q supporters, the cops, congress, and tech people all have a role to play in expanding our already draconian surveillance/carceral state. We also discuss … Continue reading "Episode 107 – Fascist Infighting w/ Darcie Wilder and Sarah Crowe"

This week’s episode of Go Fact Yourself features topics that are really scary and really funny! Dave Anthony is a comedian, but he loves making people think just as much as he loves making them laugh. He hosts the podcast "The Dollop" where he tells people about the U.S. history that they probably didn’t learn in school. That includes some less-discussed details about George Washington’s teeth. Dave’s opponent is Xeni Jardin! She’s the co-editor of one of the premier blogs on the internet: "Boing Boing". As someone who’s worked with websites for years, she’s got a lot of thoughts on what makes the internet such a great platform for conversation… and why it’s often not-so-great as well. Our guests will take deep dives into trivia, advocate for important causes and even get to meet a personal hero. What’s the Difference: Warship/Worship What’s the difference between a battleship and a destroyer? What’s the difference between a church and a cathedral? Areas of Expertise Dave Anthony: San Francisco Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner, why Halloween is better than Christmas and climate change. Xeni Jardin: Golden retrievers, the film Blade Runner and marijuana. Appearing in this episode: J. Keith van Straaten Helen Hong Dave Anthony Xeni Jardin With guest experts: Doctor Alex Hall, director for the UCLA center for climate science. Tommy Chong, comedian, writer, actor and cannabis activist. Go Fact Yourself was devised by Jim Newman and J. Keith van Straaten, and produced in collaboration with Maximum Fun. The show was recorded at The Angel City Brewery in Los Angeles. Theme Song by Jonathan Green. Maximum Fun's Senior Producer is Laura Swisher. The show is edited by Julian Burrell.

Our guest this week is Xeni Jardin. Xeni is my partner at Boing Boing. We've been friends for a really long time, and Xeni has been with me from the very beginning at Boing Boing. She is always coming up with really cool ideas for tools that she uses for cooking, for communicating, she does a lot of traveling. I'm really looking forward to what she has to present to us today.
In September 2013, I interviewed at the XOXO conference and festival the four lead editors of Boing Boing, an online, thriving descendent of zine culture that is one of the most popular blogs on the Internet. For the day after Christmas, it seems appropriate to celebrate generosity and gift culture with Mark Frauenfelder, David Pescovitz, Cory Doctorow, and Xeni Jardin. As with all the sessions at XOXO, the presentation is Creative Commons licensed, and I separately obtained permission from Andy Baio and Andy McMillan. Thanks, too, to Mike Gebhardt and Betty Farrier of brytCAST.com, the folks who videotaped throughout XOXO 2012 and 2013, for providing the high-quality audio file.
Xeni is not only an overlord at Boing Boing, but also one of the smartest humans on the planet and a genuine pleasure to talk to. And yes, ending a sentence with "to" is considered poor grammar, which today I am bad at. Further proven by ending a sentence with "at".
Boing Boing co-editor and woman about town Xeni Jardin joins Jesse and Jordan to discuss the Prince Fan Club, the Olympics, and a cost-benefit analysis of making your own seltzer.

Our exploration of the Josh Wolf case concludes. Melissa is back... well, sort of -- she calls in from across the country; Xeni Jardin from BoingBoing discusses journalism and civil liberties with Irene and Josh Wolf; finally, Josh wraps things up with a few words about the current "crisis point" we face as citizens. Part 3 of 3.
