Welcome to the first official public version of Starter Trek, where Tawny Newsome guides her friend Andrew Ti through the endless frontier of the Star Trek universe, along with their producer Jessie Earl. For our first batch of episodes, we explore some of the most overtly political episodes of Trek, starting with the subtlest of racial allegories, The Original Series episode "Let This Be Your Last Battlefield." What if Star Trek had spun off into a full-blown sitcom starring Lwaxana Troi? To kick off Season 15 of The Trek Files, Larry Nemecek welcomes actor, writer, comedian, and Star Trek: Lower Decks star Tawny Newsome for a deep dive into an early-1990s pitch centered on Majel Barrett Roddenberry's Betazoid ambassador. The document up for discussion is a never-produced sitcom concept built around Lwaxana Troi; equal parts fish-out-of-water comedy, family chaos, and larger-than-life Trek energy. Together, Larry and Tawny unpack why the pitch feels both very of-its-time and strangely ahead of its time, especially now that Star Trek comedy has found new life through projects like Lower Decks. As someone who has not only starred in Trek comedy but also developed her own comedic Trek ideas, Tawny brings a unique perspective to the conversation: what makes sci-fi comedy work and how Gene Roddenberry's world always had room for humor alongside the philosophy and adventure. It's a fascinating look at a road not taken in Star Trek history and a reminder that sometimes the weirdest ideas in the archive are the most revealing. Was ist belastbar, was ist Wunschdenken, was ist geschicktes Branchenrauschen? Warum reden gerade plötzlich so viele über Year One? #StarTrek #StarTrekLegacy #StarTrekUnited #StarTrekYearOne #TawnyNewsome #ParamountPlus #StarTrekNews #DiscoveryPanel #StarTrekPodcast #Legacy #United #YearOne

[Review starts at 4:09 / Interviews start at 58:03] Anthony and Laurie keep the news short this week, but do talk about a new comic series from IDW that covers the unexplored (and very dark) history of why the Klingons are refugees in the 32nd century. The rest of the podcast is dedicated to Starfleet Academy episode 5, “Series Acclimation Mil” and its loving tribute to Deep Space Nine and the Sisko family. As they discuss the episode, they play clips from various interviews with Tawny Newsome and Robert Picardo, then afterwards, the full interview Tony did with Tawny and Cirroc Lofton.

It’s pitch week! Anthony and Laurie are joined by Trev and Stanley from The Salon to talk about all the Star Trek TV pitches out there—but they start with an in-depth look at the brand-new clip from the first episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. They talk about Paul Giamatti’s insights into his SFA character, Nus Braka, and Robert Picardo’s confirmation on which version of The Doctor is in the show. They discuss the sentimental posts from Strange New Worlds actors as production heads towards its end, and the imminent departure of Prodigy and other Trek shows from Netflix across the globe. Then it’s time for the main topic: all the TV pitches out there for new Trek series from creatives who’ve already worked in the franchise. They break down each one—ideas from Tawny Newsome & Justin Simien, Terry Matalas, Mike Sussman, Akiva Goldsman & Henry Alonso Myers, Aaron Waltke, and Jennifer Muro—and assess its viability as a group. After that, each person makes their own pitch for a Star Trek show that is assessed by the others: Greenlight? Development deal? Hard pass? Listen to find out.

[Strange New Worlds review starts at 28:26] What happens in Vegas does not stay in Vegas: Anthony and Laurie are back from Star Trek Las Vegas with tales to tell! The podcasters recap the highlights of the 5-day convention and go through just SOME of the news that came from the event: Scott Bakula and producer/writer Mike Sussman pitched an Archer show to Secret Hideout, Terry Matalas has 30 pages of a post-Picard script that includes ideas for how to bring back Todd Stashwick, Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien’s sitcom pitch is done and in the hands of Paramount+ (a Skydance Corporation), Simon Pegg thinks Skydance’s David Ellison will be interested in making another Star Trek movie, and Starfleet Academy will show us new sides of The Doctor. NOTE: The podcast was recorded before news broke about the new Paramount’s plans for Star Trek, so we will pick up on that in next week’s pod. After the news, they dig into this week’s episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, “The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail,” digging deep into the Kirk of it all, celebrating Pelia, laughing at cat clocks, and seeing Pike at his captain-ly best. They wrap up with Tony’s interview with Valerie Weiss, the scientist-turned-director who helmed the episode.
I just want to say before anyone listens to this episode…I LOVE true crime! Podcasts, Dateline, asking Chappy Tea to embellish the grisly details of case files I looked up with a hacked PACER account…I can't get enough. So when I imply in this episode that I think the cottage industry exploiting the victims of physical violence for t-shirt sales is horrifically sad and beneath contempt, I was talking about something else. Or I got confused or I was taken over by a brain thing or something. I got all messed up for a sec. It's cool though. Anyway what else?Oh yeah. Farts are funny and I'm a ninja pimp. This week we will be joined by our good buddy Nick Wright to talk about civilian life and jobs in the Federation. Sounds pretty mundane, but there's actually some very interesting angles to explore here. We'll be talking about what life is like within the Federation as well as some jobs held by civilians on Starbases and even Starships. And we'll speculate wildly about what we can possibly expect from the sitcom that Tawny Newsome is developing which looks more at the civilian side of Federation life! David Wright and Mark Radulich present their Star Trek Lower Deck Season 5 TV Show Review! The fifth and final season of the American adult animated television series Star Trek: Lower Decks is set in the 24th century and follows the adventures of the low-ranking officers with menial jobs on the starship Cerritos, one of Starfleet's least important starships. A fifth season of Lower Decks was ordered in March 2023. Writing had begun by then and was nearly complete that October, when McMahan said it was possible that this could be the last season of the series. Voice recording was delayed by 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike and mostly took place between November 2023 and February 2024. In April, Paramount+ confirmed that the fifth season would be the last. The season premiered on the streaming service Paramount+ on October 24, 2024, with its first two episodes. But when repairs start going in the wrong direction and a supposed curse has the crew licking walls, Mariner starts to see the station in a different light while Captain Freeman gets stuck in the maintenance labyrinth. Which brand of breakfast cereal is kid rejected, mother approved? Who is the exception to no bits on tips? How are The Rio and Starbase 80 related?
