Ever since telling people to “Free Your Mind... and Your Ass Will Follow” in the late ‘60s, George Clinton's P-Funk sound has influenced countless artists, including the likes of Prince, Snoop Dogg and Janelle Monáe. George is the mastermind behind groups like Funkadelic and Parliament, and he's carved out a massive career in his own right. Last fall, Tom got to talk to George about his life in music, his influence on modern hip-hop, and how he hasn't been fairly compensated for that influence.

A record that needs little introduction. Just say “Maggot Brain” and the album cover of an afro’d woman, screaming and buried to her neck in dirt immediately comes to mind as does Eddie Hazel’s indelible guitar that blares for ten+ minutes on the opening title track. We discuss the classic for more than twice the original albums runtime. Time well spent. Disclaimer: We somehow completely neglected to discuss Funkadelic’s influence on 90’s West Coast Hip-Hop and on Dr. Dre’s G-Funk sound in particular. A ridiculous omission that we’ll have to correct on a future episode. Description: Shane gifts Pauly a vinyl copy of Europe '72 by the Grateful Dead. John Lennon reminds us to thank the CIA and U.S. Army for LSD. Shane reviews the Magic Trip documentary and explains why he wouldn't want to travel on the Furthur bus with the Merry Pranksters. Shane and Pauly discuss Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and why Kesey's problems with the film version of his novel. Other stories include Shane's trip on a Green Tortoise adventure tour, teenaged Pauly "adopted" by older hippies on Grateful Dead tour, and Shane's encounter with a sketchy "leprechaun" in Central Park. Dope Media includes Searching for Sound by Phil Lesh, Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys, Free Your Mind... and Your Ass Will Follow by Funkadelic, Paul Krassner's Impolite Interviews, and The Eden Express: A Memoir of Insanity by Mark Vonnegut. http://dopestories.com
