On September 26, 2025, last year’s Best Picture Oscar winner, One Battle After Another, a loose adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s novel Vineland, hit wide release in theaters. And then 11 days later, on October 7, Pynchon published what might be his final novel, Shadow Ticket. Not a bad year for an 88-year-old writer. This hour, a look at the (maybe) reclusive Pynchon and the novels and stories he’s published, from Gravity’s Rainbow to Mason & Dixon and more. Plus: a look at the two Paul Thomas Anderson movies that Pynchon’s work has inspired, Inherent Vice and One Battle After Another. GUESTS: David Cowart: Distinguished professor emeritus of English language and literature at the University of South Carolina and the author of a number of books, including Thomas Pynchon: The Art of Allusion and Thomas Pynchon and the Dark Passages of History Ana Gavrilovska: A writer; you can find her work in Current Affairs, Uncut Magazine, Maggot Brain, and her Substack, Sick Sad Motherslug Leonardo Goi: A journalist and film critic Brian Slattery: A writer and musician Music featured (in order): Don Giovanni, K. 527: Overture – W.A. Mozart as performed by Claudio Abbado and the Chamber Orchestra of EuropeThe most referenced piece of music in Pynchon’s catalogue. Gravity’s Angel – Laurie Anderson The Royal Scam – Steely DanMentioned in Bleeding Edge. Run Straight Down – Warren ZevonZevon attributed this song to overdosing on Pynchon — the opening words are just carcinogenic chemicals. Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) – Bonzo Dog BandPynchon put out his own playlist for Inherent Vice. This was on it. “Today, we welcome a guitarist whose story feels almost too legendary to be real. Michael Hampton — the young phenom who walked into the Parliament‑Funkadelic galaxy at just seventeen and instantly became part of its gravitational pull. A Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, a torchbearer of the Mothership, and the man behind some of the most transcendent guitar moments in funk history. From the cosmic chaos of the P‑Funk stage to the spiritual electricity of his ‘Maggot Brain' performances, Hampton has always played like he's channeling something bigger — something ancient, futuristic, and deeply human all at once.Today, we dive into the journey of a quiet giant whose guitar has spoken louder than words for nearly five decades. Michael Hampton… welcome to the show.” PURCHASEA founding father of power-funk electric guitar MICHAEL HAMPTON‘INTO THE PUBLIC DOMAIN'AThttps://michaelhampton.bandcamp.com/album/into-the-public-domain-2Bandcamp “Electric Psychedelic Guitar Fusion with a Funk Pulse That Never Stops Beating...This record is a mesmerizing swirl of electric psychedelic guitar fusion, stitched together with the unmistakable funk DNA that made Hampton a pillar of the Parliament/Funkadelic universe. But what's striking here is how personal the music feels. There's no need for vocals; the guitar does all the speaking, testifying, and time traveling.” ...By Music Journalist Ray Shasho5 starsMichael Hampton--Lead GuitarPhilip Samuel Smith--Rhythm GuitarPhil Keaggy--Guest Lead GuitarJohn Schreffler--Pedal Steel GuitarMatt Lesser--DrumsMike Labombard—Saxophone FOR MORE INFORMATIONABOUTMICHAEL HAMPTONVISIThttps://www.tiktok.com/@ma_wa_haTikTokhttps://www.instagram.com/michaelwhampton/Instagramhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/5rhBe5DqUbACYzqerQa9R0Spotifyhttps://www.facebook.com/p/Michael-Hampton-100040199001670/Facebookhttps://www.youtube.com/@MaWaHaYouTubehttps://georgeclinton.com/George Clinton Official Sitehttps://www.facebook.com/georgeclintonpfunkGeorge Clinton Facebook UPCOMINGGEORGE CLINTONPARLIAMENT-FUNKADELICSHOWSSat, APR 11The PFunk Festival 2026Tallahassee, FLApr. 25 - 26, 2026Austin Blues Festival 2026Austin, TXMay. 21 - 24, 2026Jacksonville Jazz Festival 2026Jacksonville, FLSun, MAY 24Hollywood Casino Joliet FUNKADELICDISCOGRAPHYFunkadelic (1970)Free Your Mind... and Your Ass Will Follow (1970)Maggot Brain (1971)America Eats Its Young (1972)Cosmic Slop (1973)Standing on the Verge of Getting It On (1974)Let's Take It to the Stage (1975)Tales of Kidd Funkadelic (1976)Hardcore Jollies (1976)One Nation Under a Groove (1978)Uncle Jam Wants You (1979)Connections & Disconnections (1980)The Electric Spanking of War Babies (1981)By Way of the Drum (2007)First Ya Gotta Shake the Gate (2014) PARLIAMENTDISCOGRAPHYOsmium (1970)Up for the Down Stroke (1974)Chocolate City (1975)Mothership Connection (1975)The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein (1976)Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome (1977)Motor Booty Affair (1978)Gloryhallastoopid (1979)Trombipulation (1980)Medicaid Fraud Dogg (2018) Notable songs"Maggot Brain" (Funkadelic), 1971"Up for the Down Stroke" (Parliament), 1974"Chocolate City" (Parliament), 1975"P-Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up)" (Parliament), 1975"Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)" (Parliament), 1976"Do That Stuff" (Parliament), 1976"I'd Rather Be With You" (Bootsy's Rubber Band), 1976"Bop Gun (Endangered Species)" (Parliament), 1977"Funkentelechy" (Parliament), 1978"The Pinocchio Theory" (Bootsy's Rubber Band), 1977"Aqua Boogie (A Psychoalphadiscobetabioaquadoloop)" (Parliament), 1978"Bootzilla" (Bootsy's Rubber Band), 1978"Flash Light" (Parliament), 1978"One Nation Under a Groove" (Funkadelic), 1978"(Not Just) Knee Deep" (Funkadelic), 1979"The Electric Spanking of War Babies" (Funkadelic), 1981 Support us on PayPal!
It only takes one disembodied head to make a classic funk rock album. This week, the critics review Maggot Brain by Funkadelic. This episode features an early morning anthem.
A piñón fijo. Sesión no apta para coger el sueño. Suenan: BLUE CHEER - "Good Times Are So Hard to Find" ("THE ORIGINAL HUMAN BEING", 1970) / PINK FAIRIES - "The Snake" (1971) / PRETTY THINGS - "Cold Stone" (1970)/ FRIJID PINK - "Sing A Song For Freedom" ("DEFROSTED", 1970) / MC5 - "Gotta Keep Movin'" (HIGH TIME", 1971) / FUNKADELIC - "Super Stupid" ("MAGGOT BRAIN", 1971) / GRAND FUNK RAILROAD - "No Lies" ("E PLURIBUS FUNK", 1971) / BLACK SABBATH - "The Wizard" ("BLACK SABBATH", 1970) / GROUNDHOGS - "Eccentric Man" ("THANK CHRIST FOR THE BOMB", 1970) / THIRD WORLD WAR - "Ascension Day" ("THIRD WORLD WAR", 1971) / FLAMIN GROOVIES - "Teenage Head" ("TEENAGE HEAD", 1971) /THE STOOGES - "Down on the Street" ("FUN HOUSE", 1970)Escuchar audio
Retrouve le podcast juste ici: L'article Maggot Brain – He Helped Them Testify Part.
On poursuit […]
The Nerves, The Dwight Twilley band, the Paley Brothers, The Records. On remet une couche de Ramones, Flamin Groovies, The Knack, Blondie, Plimsouls, et on […] L'article Maggot Brain – Power Pop for who to blame est apparu en premier sur Radio Campus Tours - 99.5 FM.
L'article Maggot Brain – We Are Mothership Connected Part.
This week, I talk to Seth Neblett (the son of the queen of funk, Mallia Franklin of Parliament-Funkadelic & Parlet & author of his new book Mothership Connected: The Women of Parliament-Funkadelic). We talk about how Seth was convinced by Bootsy Collins to tell his mother and the women of P-Funk's stories, how he initially assumed this tale was going to be told as a documentary, Mallia Franklin's appearance in the Don Letts docuemntary Tales Of Dr. Funkenstein, Seth (at age 6) being taken by his grandmother to go watch his mom perform with Parliament/Parlet for the first time, how he was able to narrow down this immense story from all the hudnreds of characters in this group's varied history, the strgggles with having your Mom be a recording and touring star, how Mallia Franklin brought elements to the band that changed music FOREVER, George Clinton and his initial band The Parliments, how Mallia's vocals are all over their recoridngs from Maggot Brain to Atomic Dog, the vast age diffrerences within the band, Mallia being called "the geiger counter" because her musical institncts were so incredible on who to bring into the p-funk world (like Bootsy Collins & Junie Morrison), how we often take a documentary's storytelling a the truth, being the "Dog & Cat Lady", why you can see so many full concert footage from Parliment's heyday, Neil Bogart of Casblanca Records and the courting of Mallia Fraklin, the genesis of the female-led spin off groups Parlet and Brides Of Funkenstein, why George Clinton put all various bands on diffferent record labels, how Geroge often didn't want his various bands to get bigger than him, how young the members of P-Funk were and how they often were not prepared for the psychological components of being part of it, Seth's thoughts on following up the book with a documentary vs a narritave series, how the women of P-Funk were not being invited to the induction ceremonies of the Grammys and Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, who should play his mom in the movie version of this story and more.So let's celebrate the queens of P-Funk forever on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie.SETH NEBLETT: Book: https://utpress.utexas.edu/9781477332672/Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@sethneblett7268REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. We are celebrating the 30 year anniversary of one of Pearl Jam's most memorable tour runs from the summer of 1995. There's a plethora of incredible moments and shows from this year, ranging from two performances at Red Rocks including a special sit down set on night 2, the infamous Polo Fields show that Ed had to leave early due to illness, and the popular Soldier Field show which is considered one of the best in their history. This episode is a part of our Hallucinogenic Recipe series that not just covers the important moments from an era of Pearl Jam, but puts emphasis on the bootleg tape trading that was rampant during the mid-1990's. Patrick Boegel and Brian Horwitz host and bring you back to a simpler time where bootlegs weren't as readily as they are now. The summer of 1995 featured some incredible moments that were highly sought after in the trader world, and they'll get deep into moments such as No Jeremy, Falling Down, Maggot Brain, Everyday People and the evolution in Pearl Jam's live performances during this era. How many pedals does J use to get his sound? What's his best documented use of a flanger? How does his version of “Maggot Brain” (recorded with bassist Mike Watt) compare to Eddie Hazel's? And were you as surprised as we were when Fender released a J Mascis signature Tele?Episode sponsored by Voodoo Lab: https://voodoolab.com/the-power-of-perfect-tone/Follow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater.
