As Andrelton SImmons returned from a trip to the disabled list, he entered a very unfamiliar lineup from when he left. Garrett Richards, Nick Tropeano, Zack Cozart, and Jim Johnson all were sent to the DL just before the weekend, leading to a couple of rough losses for the Halos in Oaklan, dropping 2 out of 3 to the Athletics. Now, the team finds themselves 8 games out of a playoff spot, despite having the 6th best record in the American League. As bleak as things look, the path to a full rebuild isn't rosy either, leaving Billy Eppler with only one logical route... First, it was Garrett Richards leaving after just two innings pitched. Next, Zack Cozart leaves with a shoulder injury. After a Mitch Haniger walkoff home run, the Angels were left in shambles in Seattle.A sweep at the hands of the Mariners puts the Halos a full 7 games out of a playoff spot in the American League, despite a respectable 37-32 record. While the team was playing fairly decent heading into this western showdown, the sweep leaves the team and fanbase feeling awfully pessimistic about their chances moving forward, especially with the ailments to Richards and Cozart. In order to stay in the hunt, the Angels will be looking for a lot of unsung heroes.Thursday's episode also features the Gear Grinder, focusing on infield shifts and ways to combat them. Mike Trout hit two mammoth blasts to take the MLB lead in home runs at 23, and yet that still was not enough to propel the Angels to victory in Seattle. With another loss and potential sweep looming, the Halos could find themselves 8 games back in the loss column after the series. Yes, we are in mid-June. Yes, there are still 90+ games to go. But the mediocre play over the last two months has limited the Angels offensively, allowing the Astros and Mariners to further separate themselves. Problem is, this was supposed to be a veteran-driven team, with guys like Ian Kinsler, Zack Cozart, and Kole Calhoun adding even more juice to the lineup. Wild West Wednesday examines the state of the AL West. Even though the Angels entered Seattle winners of 7 of 9, they have lost ground in the division over the past two weeks, as no one can slow down the Astros and Mariners. Next to Mike Trout, it can be argued that Andrelton Simmons is the most important player on the Angels' roster. With his trip to the disabled list due to an ankle sprain, the Angels must find a way to win games without their gold glove shortstop. Not only is Simmons considered the best defensive player in the game, over the past two seasons, Andrelton Simmons has been a force at the plate, racking up a .330 average this season and OPS north of .800. The general consensus seems to be that the shortstop will be able to play as soon as his 10-day trip ends, though no clear timetable has been released. In his place, Zack Cozart will takeover the main shortstop duties, with some combination of Luis Valbuena, Jefry Marte, and Kaleb Cowart at third base. Perhaps David Fletcher may get a call from Salt Lake?Thursday's episode also features the Gear Grinder, focusing on Mike Scioscia's most recent usage of the bullpen and how his decisions ultimately paid off. After a day off, we hoped the Angels would come out rejuvenated and kickstart their 10-game road trip with passion. That never happened...A costly error by Chris Young led to 4 unearned runs in the 1st inning, and the Angels could only crank out 4 hits as a team, succumbing to the wizardry of J.A. Happ. Multiple at-bats were hard to watch, as Zack Cozart and Ian Kinsler both had their slumps of the past few weeks continue, among other Halos. This lack of production offensively needs to change in a hurry, or the Angels risk finding themselves more than just a few games out of a playoff spot when the draft rolls around.Wild West Wednesday also examines the state of the AL West, and though the injuries continue to pile up for the Mariners, they continue to win games and distance themselves from the Halos.Don't forget to follow the show on Twitter @LockedOnAngels and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, and Google Play. The new leadoff hitter in the Angels' lineup delivered in an emphatic way on Sunday afternoon, salvaging a series split at home against Minnesota with the Houston Astros coming into town.Zack Cozart picked up 3 hits, including the walkoff single in the 9th on Sunday, while Shohei Ohtani dazzled us on the mound yet again, racking up 11 strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Inconsistency continues to plague the Halos, losing a pair of tough games due to the offense's inability to pick up a clutch base hit, the bullpen faltering during certain tense situations, or Mike Scioscia pressing the wrong buttons in managing his pitching staff. However, despite all of these perceived issues, the Angels continue to be right in the think of the AL West race. The weekend's Studs & Duds are also featured in today's episode, with Justin Upton's 5 RBI weekend being a major highlight, and Kole Calhoun continuing to struggle at the plate. Lastly, a series preview as the Astros head to Angel Stadium for the first time this season. Welcome to Locked on MLB, your daily national podcast covering Major League Baseball as part of the Locked on Podcast Network hosted by Tommy Stokke.Today we welcome special guest Pat Zajac, the host of Locked on Angels. Pat joins the podcast to talk about the team's hot start or whether or not the Angels have padded their record on weaker competition. What's been the early takeaways of Shohei Ohtani and what problems could he cause for the rotation down the stretch if he's only pitching once a week? Pat also gives his thoughts on how Mike Scioscia has handled his versatile player. The Angels brought in Zack Cozart and Ian Kinsler in the offseason instead of signing someone like Mike Moustakas. Was that the right move? What does the team do with struggling outfielder Kole Calhoun?Plus, we discuss how Angels fans view Albert Pujols as he approaches milestones and competitive games in September. Will the rotation or bullpen be a bigger concern moving forward? Finally, Mike Trout. We talk think-pieces, Trout's Philadelphia connections and whether or not he needs to be marketed more. Ian Kinsler is off to a tought start in 2018, with his batting average falling below the Mendoza Line. With Mike Trout lighting the baseball world on fire, should Mike Scioscia consider batting MLB's best player in the leadoff spot?Despite Kinsler's struggles, the team has not skipped a beat as a team offensively, averaging 7 runs per game in Seattle after bludgeoning the Orioles' staff for 3 games before that. However, perhaps now is the time to experiment and give a few struggling Halos the opportunity to find their strokes. Kole Calhoun and Ian Kinsler have gone on notable cold streaks, with Zack Cozart showing some signs of life after a few tough weeks. A lineup with Mike Trout starting things off could spell early doom for opposing pitchers, or perhaps mess with the mojo of the rest of the lineup.Tuesday also means the Down on the Farm Report, featuring three guys who have been dominating the upper levels of the Angels' system. Jesus Castillo and Griffin Canning are scorching on the mound in Mobile, while David Fletcher leads the Pacific Coast League in hits. After a 13-3 start to the season, the Angels have lost their mojo the past two weeks, going 3-9 in their last 12, including this past weekend's 3-game sweep at the hands of the New York Yankees. While many have criticized the much-maligned pitching rotation and their subsequent failures to pitch deep into games, leading to a taxed bullpen, the offense has continued to crater, posting only 5 runs against the Yankees. Multiple key cogs in the order have gone under cold spells, headlined by Justin Upton, Kole Calhoun, and Zack Cozart. As a team, the Angels swing a ton while also making contact more so than most teams in the American League. However, the problem lies in over-aggressiveness and the failure to make solid contact. We examine that in today's episode.Monday also means the Studs and Duds of the weekend. Duds were easy to find, while Andrelton SImmons and Justin Anderson stood out among the rest to earn studly honors. Coming off of a 1-5 week at home in Anaheim, the outlook seemed bleak for the Angels heading to Houston to take on the defending champions, winners of six straight coming in. Boy, did things change rather quickly...Tyler Skaggs performed brilliantly, effectively changing speeds, locating his fastball and changeup down in the zone, inducing 10 groundball outs and dazzling the crowd with his hammer of a curveball. Offensively, the Angels scratched enough at-bats together to push across two runs, mainly due to the quarter that we chastised yesterday. Justin Upton, Luis Valbuena, Zack Cozart, and Kole Calhoun all had their fingerprints over this win, and it could not have come at a better time. A heartwarming story also came out of the victory, as Justin Anderson made his Major League debut in the 8th inning, coming on in relief of Skaggs and pitching masterfully, striking out Carlos Correa with the tying run on base to get out of the jam. Winning cures everything, and it's incredibly difficult to not be amped about Game 1 in Houston. Shohei Ohtani toes the rubber Tuesday night, and could conceivably give the Angels an incredible series victory.Don't forget to follow the show on Twitter @LockedOnAngels and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, and Google Play. For much of his career, it's been Mike Trout and a bunch of replacement-level players. This past week for the Angels, it was much of the same.Much of the starting rotation failed to pitch deep into games, such as Tyler Skaggs, Shohei Ohtani, and Andrew Heaney. As a result, the bullpen was forced to log heavy innings all week. Toss in a struggling offensive performance, and you have a disaster week for the Halos, losing 5 of 6 games. A week in which Luis Valbuena, Justin Upton, Zack Cozart, and Kole Calhoun combined to go 3-70 at the plate. Yikes...Studs and Duds of the weekend also makes its Monday return before we preview a big series against the Houston Astros. All of the pitching matchups favor the defending champions very heavily, so it could be another tough week for the Angels. We'll just have to watch it unfold.Don't forget to follow the show on Twitter @LockedOnAngels and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, and Google Play. After the first off-day of the season, we assess the first week of the season on the show. With Matt Shoemaker and Andrew Heaney on the disabled list, questions about the starting rotation loom most glaring. While the rotation is full of question marks, the bullpen has thrived in its place, logging heavy innings and keeping the Halos in games. The offense has been hot and cold, but has stepped up when needed. All in all, it's quite hard to complain about a 5-2 start to the season.Later in the show, the Friday Mailbag comes your way, with questions surrounding the starting rotation, as well as Zack Cozart in the leadoff spot. Lastly, with the weekend series against the Oakland A's, we preview the 3-game set at Angel Stadium. Once again, Shohei Ohtani provided a magical moment, with a game-tying 2-run homer in the 5th inning off Corey Kluber, setting the stage for late inning dramatics at Angel Stadium.Zack Cozart sent Halo fans into a frenzy, belting a hanging breaking ball from Zach McAllister into left field and everyone drove home safely. A big time series win for the Angels, breaking a 12 game losing streak to Cleveland in style. Everyone had a hand in this ballgame, from Tyler Skaggs grinding through 4.2 innings pitched against Kluber, the bullpen posting 8.1 shutout innings, and timely hits from key members in the lineup. Winning feels good.Later in the show, Pat shares what grinds his gears in this week's Gear Grinder, before diving into some more minor transactions by bargain bin shopper Billy Eppler. With Opening Day in the books, it's time to reflect on a heartbreaking extra-innings loss in Oakland before moving on to the rest of the weekend. While the Halos fell 6-5 in 11 innings, there are plenty of positive takeaways from game #1 that far outweighed any negatives. Garrett Richards dazzled in the early goings, mixing pitches well and showing off his devastation fastball/slider combination before succumbing to fatigue that lead to two Oakland home runs to get the hosts back in the game. Kole Calhoun and Zack Cozart each had phenomenal starts at the plate, continuing their hot finishes to spring training.By the way, Albert Pujols is back. The slimmer Pujols crushed a no doubt shot to left that gave the Angels the lead in the late innings, but the bullpen could not quite hold it. Before we bash on the pitching staff, let's not forget that the bullpen as a whole gave up just 2 runs in 6 innings. That's just baseball sometimes.Don't forget to follow the show on Twitter @LockedOnAngels and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, and Google Play! Learn more about your ad choices. Just 3 days left until Opening Day in Oakland, and while there are many questions that will be answered over the summer, certain players and their success or failure will have a greater impact than others on the Angels franchise this season. Today, we take a look at the key to the starting rotation, Garrett Richards.Though the Angels' front office touts the depth in the rotation at the top of the organization, few pitchers in the mix possess the talent and ceiling of Garrett Richards. With a nasty fastball and slider combination, as well as further use of a devastating curveball, Richards' potential in 2018 seems to be at a career-high. However, the right-hander has only made 12 starts in two seasons, further proving that perhaps the greatest ability is availability. Later in the show, Studs & Duds of the weekend are revealed, focusing on the torrid finish to spring by Zack Cozart at the plate and the continued struggles of a few bullpen arms expected to make the Opening Day roster. All of this, plus thoughts on Scott Kingery's groundbreaking extension with the Phillies. A tough outing for Shohei Ohtani brings us more questions than answers as to how the young right-hander will perform this season, leading many to believe he is not ready for big league baseball quite yet. After the 7-run barrage at the hands of the Rockies, we digest the information we have on Ohtani, and speculate as to whether or not the Angels should start him in Salt Lake in AAA to start the season. Later, the Studs and Duds of the weekend are highlighted, notably with Zack Cozart and Kole Calhoun looking primed and ready to go for Opening Day. As we continue chatting why the Angels will make the playoffs in 2018, we bring Nick Hamelin on the show to get a different perspective on the club as spring marches on. Formerly of Baseball Essential, Nick Hamelin brings the first east-coast perspective to the show as he shares his thoughts on whether playoff baseball is in the cards for Anaheim. Justin Upton looks to be the biggest addition for the club in his mind, while Nick is not as optimistic or excited for Zack Cozart and his role with the organization. One thing we can all agree on? Mike Trout is the best baseball player on this planet. As long as he plays 150+ games, the Angels are a solid bet to contend for October baseball. Finally! Mike Scioscia gifts us with the first look at a possible Opening Day lineup, as Mike Trout, Justin Upton, Kole Calhoun, Ian Kinsler, Zack Cozart, and Andrelton Simmons all make their spring debut in Tempe.Despite the blowout loss at the hands of the Indians, there are plenty of takeaways from that look into the lineup. Ian Kinsler as the leadoff hitter could provide plenty of run scoring opportunities for Mike Trout, and the added length with the presence of Zack Cozart and Justin Upton does not give any breaks for opposing pitchers. This will be fun to watch this season.Spring Training ticket prices are also reaching absurd rates, and this is the focus of the Thursday Gear Grinder before we delve into Billy Eppler's recent comments about keeping this roster they it stands now. What does the mean moving forward, especially looking ahead a few months into the season?Eppler loves this team and so do we do. Tune in and listen! The debut episode of Locked On Angels brings you a quick introduction to the host, Patrick Zajac, before diving into an offseason recap to prime you for Angels Spring Training. The media follows Shohei Ohtani's every move, Justin Upton provides stellar protection behind Mike Trout, while Ian Kinsler and Zack Cozart provide ample upgrades to both the offense and defense. The organization certainly "won" the offseason, but we'll find out soon if that translates to a playoff berth in 2018.Later in the show, Patrick discusses his best of the weekend, breaking down what Eric Hosmer signing with the Padres means to the greater MLB landscape, and urges folks not to forget about the Minnesota Twins as they bulk up their starting rotation.Lastly, Pat reviews a few recent transactions the Angels completed, shipping out CJ Cron to Tampa Bay while bringing in Chris Young and Chris Carter as added depth pieces.Welcome to the ride that is Locked On Angels!
