Game 1 of the 2015 World Series arrived on the same day as the death of Edinson Volquez’s father, Danio. The news reached Royals general manager Dayton Moore, who relayed it to manager Ned Yost, before Volquez knew. With game time approaching and Volquez slated to take the ball for the Royals, a decision was needed. Would the team let Volquez know? The team made the call in consultation with the Volquez family. Edinson wouldn’t be told. He pitched six solid innings and the Royals went on to win in 14 innings. On today’s SportsBeat KC, Yost recounts the hours before the game and what communication was happening behind the scenes with Star columnist Vahe Gregorian and host Blair Kerkhoff. What year is it? Through 10 games, the 2019 Texas Rangers have either been very fun or very frustrating to watch, much akin to the Rangers teams of the early 00s. We’ve got interleague play coming up, sandwiched by two off days (thank goodness). Ronald Guzman is probably going to miss about a month, and so our dumb fan brains ponder why Gallo can’t keep raking at first base, and let Calhoun play LF in Arlington. Finally, Edinson Volquez might be forced to retire, and other pitchers have been ohsosobad, so perhaps we can keep a closer eye on the starters taking care of business on the farm. Go Rangers! Can you believe it? Vilken vecka. After the Royals came back against Houston on Tuesday, it felt a little more like the recent Hey Day of the Dayton Moore era than what we've seen so far in 2017. The game also highlighted the improved performance of late of Whit Merrifield, Eric Hosmer, and others. On top of that, Mike Moustakas is ahead of Steve Balboni's franchise-record home run pace.We also talked about some milestones the Royals have reached during Dayton Moore's tenure and compared them to the great Royals run of yesteryear. And we also discussed a few potential draft targets, the Royals Latin presence, and the overall pitching depth of the organization. Greg and Wayland discuss Albert Pujols’s 600th home run and Edinson Volquez’s no-hitter, the mysterious comings and goings of a pitcher’s best stuff, and what a useless statistic the ‘win’ is. Then Chicago sports fan (and Joe’s rec league teammate) Anna Kryczka visits the studio to talk about the Cubs’ disappointing start, Joe Maddon’s wacky managing, and whether she’d buy David Ortiz’s used bed. Finally, after getting fired by the Mets earlier this week for flipping off some fans at Citi Field, Mr. Met (Anthony Soike: New Girl, Brooklyn Nine Nine) tells his side of the story.

The Royals have not started the second half well. While the 2014 season saw them make a comeback with a similar record, the odds are against another trip to the playoffs. The sensible thing is to explore some trades and try to bolster the farm system. But we aren't talking about trading anyone just to dump them off. After the holidays, we had to play quick catchup and talk about the signings of Edinson Volquez and Kris Medlen from December. Volquez is important, but more of a complementary piece. Two other pitchers are much more important. Medlen, though, is a small risk for a big reward. We also tiptoed into the Hall of Fame voting question. On Tuesday, the inductees will be named, but this year, the process has been up for debate more than the players themselves. We discussed that and some of the candidates who might emerge from the logjam, including Jeff reading off Pedro Martinez's stats from the steroid era while Mike giggled uncontrollably. Then we took a break from baseball to talk TV. You may have seen the Twilight Zone-esque BBC show Black Mirror, so we talked about some of the elements from the series and our impressions in general.

Podcast number 2 features a discussion of Edinson Volquez's suspension, Carlos Zambrano's move to the bullpen, Manager Ken Macha's constantly shifting lineup, and Brewers minor leaguers Chris Cody and Lorenzo Cain. From the brewers.com site, here is how the Brewers 20-0 defeat of the Pirates ranks historically: http://milwaukee.brewers.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100422&content_id=9500206&vkey=news_mil&fext=.jsp&c_id=mil This a good summary of the Zambrano move with lots of quotes, and the conspiracy theory that Jack espoused: http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/ct-spt-0422-zambrano-carlos-cubs-chicago-20100421,0,4979197.story We also kicked around how we would order the brewers lineup. First is my short term lineup. This is what I would use if I had to win one game tomorrow: 1. Rickie Weeks 2. Jim Edmonds 3. Ryan Braun 4. Prince Fielder 5. Casey Mcgehee 6. Greg Zaun 7. Alcides Escobar 8. Corey Hart 9. Pitcher Realistically, I know that Edmonds shouldn't be pushed to play every day. With that in mind, here is the lineup I would use assuming that Carlos Gomez needs to get the lion's share of the starts in center. 1. Rickie Weeks 2. Alcides Escobar 3. Ryan Braun 4.
