As we saw Mike Rizzo and the Washington Nationals ship the two biggest stars out of town at the 2022 deadline, we also saw them stick with a lot of veteran players that could have been traded. What importance do they see these veteran players like Steve Cishek, Anibal Sanchez, Kyle Finnegan, as well as other veterans have to this team moving forward? Ryan answers those questions here, and gets into what he would have done at the trade deadline and plays a little game of GM for the Nationals. Also, Luke Voit was named a Silver Slugger finalist for the DH position! What kind of future does the 31 year old vet have for the rebuilding Washington Nationals? The Nats lost to Miami 3-1 as Sandy Alcantara bolstered his Cy Young case by throwing a 103 pitch Complete Game. Al & Mark tip their caps to the Marlins right hander, who is 3-0 this year vs. Washington in four starts. (03:30) Lane Thomas got the day off despite his surge as of late, because his career numbers against Alcantara have not been good (0 for 11 w/ 6 Ks). Do you agree with the manager filling out his lineup cards in this manner? His teammates had yet another game filled with base running gaffe in his absence. (09:20) CJ Abrams committed an error, but was the only National to double off of Alcantara on Sunday. Luke Voit meanwhile had three hits as he seemingly has settled in nicely into the DH role. By the way, what's the latest with Nelson Cruz's eye inflammation? (16:30) Anibal Sanchez pitched well, but was no match of course for Alcantara. Sanchez's ERA is at 4.40 and has five decent starts in last six outings. Al has some very interesting and unexpected words about Sanchez in mid September. (22:10) The Nats open a three game series on Monday night Atlanta and the Braves are just a game back of the Mets. The divisional race is of extra importance, because the winner will likely have a bye into the NLDS. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Nats beat Miami 5-3 to guarantee a series win while hitting four solo homers and oddly enough not singling. Mark & Al run through the offensive stars from the victory, including all the starting outfielders (Thomas/Robles/Call). Lane Thomas for the second straight season is hitting well post trade deadline and the hosts wonder where he fits into the 2023 lineup. (06:50) Victor Robles homered for just the 10th time post 2019, but this one went over 400 feet. He had been out of the lineup for a week and Mark explains the factors that led to why. (12:14) Luke Voit homered from the cleanup spot, his 21st of the season. Voit is arbitration eligible next season; and does that mean he is likely to return next year? (16:11) Riley Adams had a RBI double and has had an offensive impact ever since Keibert Ruiz's injury. However, Tres Barrera has not yet played since he was called at the beginning of the month and it does beg the question as to why that is the case. (21:10) Erick Fedde only lasted four innings, but his bullpen combined for five scoreless frames. What effect will pitch clocks have next season on Fedde, who is a very slow worker on the mound. The Nats lost 4-3 to the Orioles despite their early lead. Al & Mark recap Hunter Harvey's pivotal relief outing against his ex-teammates; as he allowed two runs in defeat. It was a busy night for the bullpen due to starter Cory Abbott only lasting three frames. (18:45) CJ Abrams made a crucial base running mistake in the 6th inning that caused an unnecessary out at 3B. Has poor base running been the biggest problem the team has had this year (not counting starting pitching)? While we are in the infield; will Joey Meneses take over at 1B for the struggling Luke Voit? (30:05) Jackson Rutledge dominated for the FredNats (High-A) in their playoff game as he threw 8 shutout innings. Rutledge was the Nationals 1st Round pick in 2019, but has battled injuries the past few seasons. (6:18) The bullpen did its job prior to Finnegan entering the game as Erasmo Ramirez did a good job of bridging the gap in the middle innings. Should Davey have pulled Finnegan when trouble began or was it the right move to see if he could wiggle out of it? (15:10) Cory Abbott threw a good outing despite getting pulled in the 5th inning. He has a string of decent starts in the past few months and putting himself in position for a 2023 roster spot. (18:05) The offense had an impressive late game effort, including a four run 8th inning. Luke Voit homered in his hometown and Joey Meneses (duh) came through with a RBI single. Cruz being placed at DH means Luke Voit has to play the field and Joey Meneses has to move to the outfield. How should Cruz be handled the rest of the way? (16:10) Meneses knocked a pair of doubles on Tuesday night and joined a short list of MLB players in the process. He has 42 hits in 30 career games, and only twelve other hitters in history have as many hits in their first month. (23:05) MacKenzie Gore threw a simulated game with next up on the agenda being a bullpen session on Friday. The plan after that is for him to make a minor league rehab assignment. It was the best outing he has had since Game 1 of the 2019 NLCS. (06:08) CJ Abrams had a good night at the plate as he drew his first walk and extra base hit with the Nationals. Could this be a turning point for his bat? (12:50) The offense had multiple contributors including Luis Garcia, Luke Voit, and Ildemaro Vargas. Garcia has shown signs of growth at the plate this year and his average is approaching .300 (.291). (28:45) Cade Cavalli being placed on the IL meant that Cory Abbott returned to Washington. (07:21) Cavalli did not get help from the defense behind him as CJ Abrams had a first inning throwing error that should have been corralled by Luke Voit. Cavalli's final inning saw more misplays, including a blunder by Luis Garcia trying to turn a double play. Should the Nats look at other 1B options in the off-season? (20:20) Luke Voit was scratched for the second straight day due to back tightness and Mark gives an update on his status. The Nats scored three runs off of Josh Hader in the 9th for a 6-3 victory in San Diego. Hats off to Alex Call for picking a very good time to hit his first career HR. (09:22) Keibert Ruiz reached base five times, collected two hits, had a RBI and stole a base. This was a major boost to the offense since Luke Voit did not play (back tightness). (14:45) CJ Abrams had an up and down game as he came through with a two run single, but did make a routine throwing error. Any cause for concern that he has made a pair of those this week? (20:30) Paolo Espino allowed three runs in just over four innings as he issued four walks. Erick Fedde returns to the rotation; could he take away Paolo's spot? (24:10) The Nationals had another instance of an egregious out at home plate and this one turned out to be especially costly. Yadiel Hernandez was thrown out while attempting to tag up in the top of the 5th with two outs. The problem? That ended up being the final out of the game due to rain. The Nats lost 9-5 to the Mets in the series rubber match on Wednesday afternoon. Mark & Al start by digesting the fact that Juan Soto is playing Baseball for another team on the other side of the country. The franchise has lost many stars in the past few years, but this one feels different in a more profound way. (10:03) Luke Voit will join the team on Thursday in Philadelphia and will likely be at 1B and in the heart of the order. He will take the roster spot of Alcides Escobar, who has been barely playing ever since Luis Garcia got called up. (21:10) Hitting 9th and playing 3B was... Ildemaro Vargas. He is known for his glove (committed a throwing error) and not his bat (went 4 for 4). The conversation then steers to Anibal Sanchez as he struggled again on the mound. Will he be replaced in the rotation? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

MLB Trade Deadline as a Metaphor for Life

The MLB Trade Deadline wrapped up Tuesday afternoon and my head is still spinning.  So much activity that I am just now starting to come back down to Earth. Juan Soto and the San Diego Padres We break down the big trades AJ Preller and the Padres made for Juan Soto, Josh Bell, Brandon Drury, and Josh Hader. The Soto/Bell deal may go down as the biggest trade in MLB history. Plus, we take a look at the Eric Hosmer situation and how that ultimately impacted Luke Voit. MLB Trade Deadline Life Lessons I was doing some thinking and realized the MLB Trade Deadline is much more than simply teams making deals.  It's about organizations getting better.  It's about teams making an honest self-evaluation, and then re-allocating assets and re-prioritizing initiatives. It's about calculated risk taking and knowing when to go all in.  It's also about profitability, brand building, franchise valuation, and Legacy. So many great life lessons here about how we can take charge of our own lives and make disciplined self-improvement decisions. Lee Hacksaw Hamilton Podcast Plus, I re-share my story about connecting with legendary sports talk host and NFL play-by-play caller Lee Hacksaw Hamilton. A podcast episode from 3 years ago leads to an email, a breakfast with Hacksaw at IHOP, and now helping Hacksaw launch his own podcast.
