This week Tom tells Josh about one of baseball's more obscure record holders: Mike Marshall. He used his knowledge of kinesiology to become a famously durable "bullpen ace" in the 1970's. Marshall eventually faded into obscurity as he had a famously prickly personality, he spent some time getting a Ph.D, and was a labor activist (which potentially led to him getting blackballed). After his MLB career, he released a bunch of poorly produced YouTube videos where he extolled a super funky pitching motion that he insisted would eliminate arm injuries altogether. Marshall's baseball reference page A sample of Marshall's strange YouTube videos A couple of Marshall obits / sources for this episode A Hardball Times article that was also an important source

Saving Elephants | Millennials defending & expressing conservative values
“Welcome to Conservative Minds – a podcast dedicated to examining conservative intellectual history to determine the core values of American conservatism. What does it mean to call yourself a conservative? What did it mean in prior times and how did we get where we are today? We explore these questions and more by turning to conservative political thinkers from the past and present. Each episode we select readings and conduct a discussion to share with you our investigation.” Thus begins each episode of the Conservative Minds podcast. In a dizzying weekly release, cohosts Corey Astillck and Kyle Sammin read a notable work of a conservative intellectual leader and hold a discussion summarizing the reading and comparing/contrasting what they’ve found to previous readings. The result is an interesting and in-depth approach to examining the many nuances of the conservative worldview. Since conservatism isn’t a rigid ideology that can be traced back to a single godfather, it can be notoriously difficult to define. What’s more, there are inherent tensions throughout the worldview that create interesting paradoxes. Sometimes conservative thinkers will emphasize one aspect of conservatism over another and the seeming contradictions may take considerably time and effort to work through. Part of Saving Elephant’s mission is to help clarify and define the conservative worldview—no easy task—and Corey and Kyle have made much progress in this endeavor. Thus far their podcast has included examining the writings of: Barry Goldwater Richard Weaver John Locke George Will Robert Bork Edmund Burke Milton Friedman Robert Nisbet Irving Kristol William F Buckley Patrick Buchanan Friedrich Hayek Alexis de Tocqueville Antonin Scalia In this episode of Saving Elephants, Kyle Sammin joins host Josh Lewis to offer a summary of the discussions he’s had in season one of Conservative Minds. Kyle lives in Pennsylvania where he practices law and writes. His contributions have appeared in The Federalist, National Review Online, Hardball Times, University Bookman, and the Weekly Standard. You can listen to the Conservative Minds podcast here.

Ep. 26 — Back on the same coast, Bobby and Alex discuss the Andrew McCutchen at length, dive down the rabbit hole of what a 50 inning baseball game would look like (not baseball, is the answer), take a bite out of Prince Fielder’s wonderfully bizarre food show, and answer a listener question — their very first! — about the possibilities of trading from scrub to star. Then they have an in-depth conversation about why baseball doesn’t have a LeBron equivalent; i.e., an ambassador for the game who becomes a worthy interview on things beyond the sport itself. They wrap it up by bringing back an old friend and seeing how the offseason is treating him. John and Kate are joined by Jen Mac Ramos to discuss their experiences following the Mariners most successful minor league team this year - the High-A Modesto Nuts. Jen is fairly new to Lookout Landing but far from new to baseball or baseball writing. They can be found writing for Beyond the Box Score (Sabermetrics), McCovey Chronicles (Giants), Purple Row (Rockies), as well as working as a stats intern at Baseball Prospectus and contributing to The Hardball Times. They also filmed a group of minor league baseball players chasing chickens for us this year. Together we discuss the experience of learning to love minor league baseball, finding a connection to a team when it can change entire organizations in a single year, and the impression this year's dominant Modesto team has had on all of us. In an organization slim on high-end talent, we discuss at a few players who have made adjustments this year to improve their value, including OF Braden Bishop, OF Eric Filia, OF Luis Liberato, and OF/3B/C Joe DeCarlo. We also discuss the delight of home run derbies, be they in Miami, Tacoma, or, as Jen was witness to, on an aircraft carrier. Afterwards, we take your Twitter questions, including Tyler O'Neill future possibilities, Yankee Candle education, and VERY MIXED REVIEWS of Rich Aurilia. The debut episode of our new podcast!
Brian and Roger talked about all that went down the last few weeks in Port St. Lucie, including such storylines as 'Steven Matz: Shark Hunter', 'Just Kidding About that Extension: The Neil Walker Story', 'Continue Praying For David Wright", and "Zack Wheeler: Not a Ghost?' Then Brian finally got around to talking about his Hardball Times article about which inflated numbers put up by the Las Vegas 51s to look for when determining who the next Michael Confortos are and who will become the next...well, they say you shouldn't speak ill of those who recently went from hitting clean-up to playing in Japan... The esteemed Marc Carig of Newsday chatted with the guys of Good Fundies. He talked about the atmosphere right now down in Mets camp, the value of team chemistry, why the club is sticking with Travis d'Arnaud over signing Matt Wieters, and what Sandy Alderson meant when he said the Mets are "all in." He also spoke of baseball and its soul. In the mail segment, Brian got into an argument with a small child over whether or not he is the beloved 'SNL' character Debbie Downer. Then finally came the debut of a new segment from Mike, the Good Fundies Bronx correspondent. He gave the guys a glimpse into the mind of a fan of that other professional baseball team based in New York. (Relax, it was only for 60 seconds.) You can read Brian's article here: http://www.hardballtimes.com/38560-2/ Remember you can send an email or voice memo whenever your heart desires to goodfundies@gmail.com.

Normally 33% shorter wouldn't be a selling point, but when your first episode was three hours, it might be? In Episode 2, Jarrett and Jeffrey discuss how much to read into a bad road trip, how much Noah Syndergaard makes it move, and how much Eric Campbell we'll be seeing in the coming weeks. Next Corinne Landrey of Crashburn Alley and The Hardball Times joins the show to talk about the second place (?!) Phillies and if any of this is remotely sustainable. Then we answer your e-mails and introduce a fun game called "How Well Do You Know Your Co-host" before wrapping up with the likely soon to be de riguer wrestling and soccer talk.
