The Yankees took the subway series and Juan Soto didn't do much. He was supposed to be mic'd up last night but begged out of it, so they put the mic on Brandon Nimmo instead. Pete Alonso pulled a Lucas Duda and airmailed a throw home. Fans also questioned Soto's effort on 2 different plays. He didn't run out a ground ball up the middle and didn't seem to want to try and rob a home run in right. Max Fried has been great for the Yankees so far. ESPN also referenced Soto getting a private plane to Boston for the next series.
Jerry talked about his big bet on the Knicks winning big Friday night and he was right. Jerry compares Howie Rose's call of Alonso airmailing his throw home to the Lucas Duda throw in the World Series. Cody Bellinger had 6 RBIs including a grand slam. Max Fried talked about pitching in the subway series.
The Yankees won the Subway Series despite with a quiet performance from Juan Soto, who also drew scrutiny for his effort on two plays and opted out of being mic'd up. Pete Alonso's errant throw home drew comparisons to Lucas Duda. Max Fried has been impressive for the Yankees, and his comments on the Subway Series were featured. Other topics included ESPN mentioning Soto's private plane to Boston, Jerry's successful Knicks bet, Cody Bellinger's big game, the Knicks' Friday night win with Mike Breen's call, Brock Purdy's contract, and a preview of the Knicks-Pacers series with discussion on its evenness, betting odds, and the Pacers' bench strength.

Jerry's update featured Cody Bellinger's grand slam sound bite, preceded by talk of a ship hitting the Brooklyn Bridge. Frank The Tank expressed frustration with the Mets' performance against the Yankees. The Panthers won game 7. The segment concluded with a discussion about USA Today's Mike Freeman, who is Boomer's age but criticized his "old man ramblings," calling him the "crankiest old man." Hour 3 The hour began with Dave Sims missing the Yankees game due to laryngitis and a caller asking why Gio wasn't covering the Mexican boat hitting the Brooklyn Bridge. They also wondered about Eddie's absence. Jerry's update included a caller apologizing for doubting his Knicks prediction, audio of excited Knicks fans, and speculation about BT & Sal traveling to Indiana for games. The Yankees won the Subway Series last night, featuring Cody Bellinger's grand slam with Howie Rose's call. Classic audio of Marv Albert and Reggie Miller was played. Jimmy, who is blind, wants Gio's wife to drive him to Kickoff to Summer. Jerry returns for his final update of the day and starts with Pete Alonso's terrible throw to the plate last night. Juan Soto did nothing in this subway series. Max Fried said he was excited to play in the series, but he didn't sound excited. The Moment of The Day: 3 examples of Rami drops filling in for Eddie. In the final segment of the show, Jon Rahm hit a shot that caught a guy in the neck.
Yes, Josh Keiser of One Royals Way podcast from KCSN said Lucas Duda is the best Royal free agent signing for throwing that ball into the front row during World Series game 5 in 2015. Hey, it's Jesse. I usually don't first-person these, since it's Roger and Andrew's podcast and I just like to do some notes in the space here… but also, today's note is especially for the 8-year-old in my house, whose reaction to the Mets winning last night on DJ Stewart getting hit by a pitch was, “has that ever happened before?”“A walkoff hit by pitch?” I replied. “Yeah, it happens sometimes.”“That exact situation?”“It's got to be the bases loaded, so, yes?”“The Mets against the Rangers?”“Well, I doubt that. They haven't played each other too much.”Indeed, the Mets' previous three wins on a walkoff HBP came against the Marlins in the 2021 home opener (Michael Conforto by Anthony Bass), the A's in 2011 (Justin Turner by Brad Ziegler), and the Cardinals on April 23, 1992 (Daryl Boston by Juan Agosto).Wait just a minute. Daryl Boston hit by Juan Agosto? That was part of Monday's note, because the runner who scored was Rodney McCray, a pinch-runner.Conforto is the only batter of the four who was hit in the ninth inning, so McNeil is the first Manfred Man to score a game-winning run on an HBP in Mets history (the others were both in 13th innings, pre-baseball shootout rule). McNeil hit the home run that tied the game against the Marlins two years ago, and pinch-hitter Luis Guillorme singled and eventually scored when Conforto leaned over the plate for the win. Lucas Duda singled and came around on the Turner plunking, so the Mets have had all manner of baserunners bring home wins this way.All four of these Mets rallies do share in common an intentional walk, and the one that Joe Torre and the Cardinals gave to Charlie O'Brien did show that little bit of strategy that came into play before the automatic free pass: Juan Agosto throwing pitchouts to Tom Pagnozzi, rather than Pagnozzi doing the old stand-and-shuffle move. Tim McCarver went so far as to describe it as an “unintentional intentional walk,” but the official scorer gave it a full IBB. After all, there wasn't an attempt to throw a strike on ball four, it was purposely outside. The Mets are now 4-4 in games with a walkoff HBP, and haven't lost a game this way since 2014, when Jeurys Familia drilled Hank Conger with the bases loaded in the 11th inning in Anaheim — one of three walkoff HBPs in the majors that year, a record set in 1972, and tied in 1997, 2002, 2008, 2011, 2014, and 2021. It's the first time it happened this year, and it's now happened at least once each of the last five seasons since a failure to get this shrimp varietal in 2018.Jonny Gomes is the only batter to be hit by two pitches to end games: August 21, 2011 in Washington, by Phillies closer Brad Lidge; and April 11, 2012, in Oakland, by Jonathan Broxton of Kansas City. Only one pitcher has walked off twice after hitting a batter: Randy Moffitt with the Giants in 1972 (Joe Pepitone at Wrigley Field) and 1978 (Bill Russell at Dodger Stadium). Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo each went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts last night in Georgia, another rough night in a rough season, and another little edit to the Mets' history books. The list of career three-strikeout games is an interesting one, because it's one of those things… like… you've got to be pretty good to be in the lineup to strike out three times regularly enough to be on the list. So, it's probably not a surprise that David Wright holds the record at 61, for as long as he was a power-hitting Met. It's a pretty wide gap, 10 of these games, to number two on the list, Michael Conforto at 51. Then it's Darryl Strawberry at 48, and now a tie for fourth at 44 between Dave Kingman and Alonso.Nimmo already was in the top 10, and now has broken his tie with Ron Swoboda for ninth place. Nimmo's 30th three-strikeout game puts him six behind the two men tied for sixth, Tommie Agee and Lucas Duda. Rounding out that top 10, with 28 times striking out three times in a game, is Jerry Koosman, who more than made up for it with the strikeouts he racked up on the mound — 1,799 of his 2,556 career K's came in orange and blue. The next 10 are pretty interesting as a mix: Curtis Granderson and Mookie Wilson at 24; Todd Hundley, Howard Johnson, and Cleon Jones at 22; Ike Davis at 21; Mike Piazza at 20; Carlos Beltrán and Tom Seaver at 19; and it's actually 11, not 10, because tied for 20th place on this list are Carlos Delgado and Francisco Lindor, with 18 three-strikeout games as Mets.Lindor was 1-for-2 last night, with a walk and a hit by pitch. That moved him up to sole possession of 48th place on the Mets' all-time list for reaching base three times in a game. He's done it 65 times now, snapping a tie with Ángel Pagán. Next time Lindor gets on base three times, he'll tie George Foster and Todd Zeile for 46th, with Gregg Jefferies (67), Hubie Brooks (69), and Ron Swoboda (70) on the radar. Wright has that team record at 336, with Nimmo the active leader at 142 (13th all-time, between Mookie and Lee Mazzilli), and Alonso even with Jeff McNeil at 109 (a 22nd-place tie between Conforto and Kevin McReyonlds). The top 11 Mets, ahead of Nimmo and Wilson, for reaching base three times in a game?* Wright, 336* José Reyes, 238* Edgardo Alfonzo, 196* Strawberry, 192* Jones & Piazza, 186* Keith Hernandez, 185* Beltrán, 171* HoJo, 170* Bud Harrelson, 168* Ed Kranepool, 154 This is a public episode. The National League won the All-Star game thanks to Rockies catcher Elias Díaz blasting a two-run homer off Félix Bautista of the Orioles, who had only given up three homers all season. So, let's do the home run chain for Díaz today… it started six years ago in New York!* Elias Díaz hit his first home run off Paul Sewald, 6/2/17And… Díaz is a chain-starter! That was the first home run that Paul Sewald allowed, after having started his rookie season out of the Mets' bullpen with 14 straight homerless appearances, in which he had 24 strikeouts and four walks over 20.1 innings with a 2.21 ERA, holding opponents to a .621 OPS.It all fell apart on a Friday night in Flushing, when Díaz had already put the Pirates ahead with a three-run double off Matt Harvey, but the Mets had regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a Michael Conforto homer, Neil Walker triple, a Gerrit Cole wild pitch, and Lucas Duda's second home run of the game. With the Mets up, 7-4, Josh Bell led off the sixth with a homer, and Harvey was pulled after walking Andrew McCutchen. Sewald came in, got tagged for a single by Jordy Mercer, and then served up Díaz's three-run blast. It got worse for Sewald, as after he struck out Max Moroff, there was a single by Adam Frazier, an RBI double by Josh Harrison, and a single by Gregory Polanco. Sewald then hit David Freese with a pitch to load the bases, walked Bell to force in another run, and got charged for one last run after Neil Ramirez entered, as McCutchen hit a sacrifice fly. Here are the highlights!Díaz now has 51 career home runs, plus a really awesome one in an exhibition game. And the six runs batted in are no longer a career high: Díaz knocked in seven last year in Denver, capped by a walk-off homer. This is a public episode. Last night, Francisco Álvarez (check out his home run chain) became the first Met to hit a game-tying home run with two outs in the ninth inning of a game since all the way back on May 17, when Francisco Álvarez hit a game-tying home run with two outs in the ninth inning off Jason Adam of the Rays. This is not normal. Before Álvarez in May, the Mets hadn't had a two-out, game-tying homer in the ninth inning of a game since Michael Conforto took Kyle Barraclough deep on September 13, 2018, a blast followed immediately by Todd Frazier's game-winning dinger.Álvarez last night became the first Met to hit a game-tying homer with two outs in the ninth inning on the road since Curtis Granderson off Matt Albers in Washington on July 3, 2017 — a game the Mets then lost in the bottom of the ninth on a Ryan Raburn RBI single.Last time the Mets won a game on the road after one of these special homers? That was September 13, 2015, in Atlanta, when Daniel Murphy hit a three-run shot off Ryan Kelly and the Mets added three in the 10th for a 10-7 shocker. All by himself, Álvarez has done this twice this year. The Mets as a team haven't had a pair of down-to-their-last-regulation-out tying homers since Scott Hairston and Lucas Duda in 2011.That tied the team record for occurrences in one season. The Mets also enjoyed such clutch hitting twice in 1970 (Dave Marshall and Donn Clendenon), 1988 (Howard Johnson and Darryl Strawberry), 1997 (Todd Hundley and Carl Everett), 2000 (Derek Bell and Bubba Trammell), and 2004 (Mike Piazza and Victor Diaz).Individually, Álvarez is now tied for the team career record with Hundley, Marshall, and Piazza. Marshall was not another catcher, but an outfielder whom the Mets acquired after the 1969 season from the Giants, along with Ray Sadecki, for Jim Gosger and Bob Heise. The Mets traded Marshall, who hit a total of 13 home runs for them in 264 games, to the Padres before the 1973 season for Al Severinsen. The Mets assigned Severinsen to Triple-A, but he never pitched professionally again. This is a public episode. The first time the Mets walked off the Yankees was in the first Subway Series iteration at Shea Stadium, in the second year of interleague play, 1998 — Luis Lopez hit a sac fly off Ramiro Mendoza that brought home Carlos Baerga with the winning run.The next year, Matt Franco singled home Rickey Henderson and Edgardo Alfonzo to lead the Mets to an improbable 9-8 victory over Mariano Rivera. There was a Shane Spencer walkoff fielder's choice in 2004 against Tanyon Sturtze to bring home Kaz Matsui, then a David Wright single off Rivera that scored Paul Lo Duca in 2006. After Jason Bay singled home Scott Hairston in the 10th inning of a 2011 game against Hector Noesi, the Mets walked off Rivera in a third different decade when Lucas Duda singled in Wright for a 2-1 verdict in 2013.The Mets didn't hit their first walkoff homer against the Yankees until 2020, when they did it twice: Amed Rosario off Aroldis Chapman (at Yankee Stadium in a doubleheader, what a strange time) and Pete Alonso off Albert Abreu. The Mets still haven't walked off the Yankees with a homer in front of people because next came Starling Marte's single off Wandy Peralta last year… and then last night, the first walkoff double the Mets have ever had against the Yankees, Brandon Nimmo driving in Eduardo Escobar (who also scored last year's walkoff run) off Nick Ramirez.Walkoff doubles are rare because how often is someone running all the way to second base on a walkoff hit? The winning run is scoring ahead of you, and you can probably stop at first base. Last night, Nimmo's ball hung up in the air, so he was running it out while Escobar had to hold up and make sure the ball wasn't caught. The Mets, in their history, have had 139 regular-season walkoff homers, and just — now — 33 walkoff doubles.Escobar had one last year against the Phillies, hit to a similar spot in right field as Nimmo did last night. Before that, you have to go back to Austin Jackson off Javy Guerra in the 13th inning against the Marlins in 2018, and before that Justin Turner against Sean Marshall and the Cubs in 2011. Wright and Ed Kranepool are the only Mets with multiple walkoff doubles, each with two.The major league record for career walkoff doubles is five, according to Stathead, and it's shared by Adrián González, Chuck Klein, Hunter Pence, and Frank Robinson. Escobar has three in his career, which puts him second to Eric Hosmer among active players, and tied with a group that ranges from Henry Aaron to Don Slaught. It's a weird sport. Sure, this SVU spends a lot of time presupposing that we are heavily invested in the lives of minor recurring characters, but it also introduces us to a delightfully crass BBQ slinger with a penchant for lewd double entendres and forces us to go down all kinds of wild Munchian rabbit holes. Does Rollins have a separate person for her vacations at clothing-optional, adult-only all-inclusives? What scandals have engulfed the world of professional canoeing? Is Adam capable of surviving as a single parent for more than a week? Did we just watch an extra torpedo a "career" in background acting for the chance at one pay bump? This is definitely one for the Munchie-curious as a full 45 minutes of banter about Josh's concert going, Lucas Duda, and the Yiddish language (among many, many other things) had to be left on the cutting room floor. The prevailing idea in baseball lately is that when your contending window closes, you carve it up and lose for a few years, but I guess nobody told Dayton Moore that.A week after signing Lucas Duda to a one-year deal, the Royals signed outfielder Jon Jay to a one-year deal as well. And they signed Ricky Nolasco to a minor league deal. Tonight Mike Silva, once again, plays GM on a bargain budget. What players do Mets fans want with only the reported $30-million dollars to spend? He talks about whether Jay Bruce will be out of their price range and why relievers like Bryan Shaw, Mike Minor and Joe Smith are desirable. Everyone keeps talking about Dee Gordon, but the player Mike would rather explore on the trade market is Jose Abreu. Mike also gets into why he doesn’t want Dominic Smith as the starting first-baseman and would prefer Adam Lind, Wilmer Flores and even Lucas Duda. Finally, Mike makes the case for Keith Hernandez for the Hall-of-Fame. Hear a clip of Kostya Kennedy talking about his Sports Illustrated piece on Mex from 2009. Keith Hernandez in the Hall-of-Fame? Is it Crazy? Maybe not.
