Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants releasing the beloved Pablo Sandoval, adding Justin Smoak and Drew Smyly to the roster, and losing 6-1 to the San Diego Padres. Before the game, the Giants announced that they had placed Sandoval on unconditional release waivers and activated the recently signed Smoak. They also activated Drew Smyly off the injured list and optioned Rico Garcia to the Alternate Site in Sacramento. It's the end of an era with Sandoval being released. Sandoval left on not the greatest of terms following the 2014 championship season. He returned with his proverbial tail between his legs in 2017 after being released from the Red Sox, and reestablished his legacy and his relationship with the fans over the next few years. In Smoak, the Giants are gaining a player who struggled this year before being released by the Brewers, but has a strong track record of patience and power. He will represent a threat to draw a walk or hit a home run every time he steps to the plate. The Giants were dominated by the Padres in last night's loss. Despite the loss, the Giants maintained a two-game lead over the Rockies for the NL's final playoff spot. Trevor Cahill was shaky in the start and the Giants' offense couldn't muster much against Padres pitching, but Smyly came out of the bullpen and was absolutely dominant over four innings. He struck out eight and walked one, and got a ton of swinging strikes. Smyly was dominant for the Giants before going on the injured list, so last night was just a continuation of how great Smyly has looked all year. The Giants figure to use him out of the rotation down the stretch, but could use him as a super reliever instead. Either way, the Giants are probably interested in keeping Smyly in their organization beyond 2020 based on how he's pitching. If he keeps this up, he could be in high demand in the offseason.Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. This weeks episode starts off with discussing the Justin Smoak release and the new addition of Daniel Vogelbach. The Bums move right along into discussing the games from last week. They both agree the team is struggling to capitalize, and letting that get the best of them. They move into that discussion farther by talking about the enormous amount of strikeouts the Brewers have as a team this year. Imagining an alternate reality in which the Giants didn't select Tim Lincecum, Madison Bumgarner, and Buster Posey with their first-round picks in the 2006-08 MLB draft. It's a scary alternate universe, but it's not that hard to imagine. Mock drafts had the Giants selecting Daniel Bard in '06, Casey Weathers in '07, and Justin Smoak in '08. It's clear that without any of Lincecum, Bumgarner, and Posey, the Giants don't win one championship, let alone three. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Following a vacation-related hiccup, the podcast is back on the air!A.J. Andrews returns from a kitteh-crazed weekend that did not help her sleep cycle in the slightest. What does help? Watching Bo Bichette at the plate. The host continues to gush about the rookie's hitting and notes that it offers forgiveness for the defense that Bo doesn't offer himself. The second half is dedicated to Justin Smoak and his yeoman efforts on defense for the Blue Jays. Andrews hypothesizes that it's the reason why the FO was loathe to move Smoak for a fringe prospect at the deadline, and wonders if it could lead to an extension for one of the few remaining playoff links on the team.Follow the podcast on Twitter @LockedOnJays and follow the host @A_J_Andrews!Subscribe on Himalaya, Google Play, Spotify, and iTunes! This episode is sponsored by Jays From the Couch, Postmates and the Locked On Podcast Network. An entirely positive episode of the podcast! What a novel concept!A.J. Andrews discusses the joys of seeing an effective Aaron Sanchez work last night against Cleveland. The right-hander looked like his former self and the host sees the benefits of what having his curveball working again can do for the embattered Blue Jay.In the second half, Andrews talks about a lesser-maligned member of the team who had a big night last night. Justin Smoak's tying and winning hits were a big boost to the flagging veteran and A.J. hopes that Smoak can carry this with the team for the rest of the season, since she doesn't see the big first baseman moved at the deadline.Follow the podcast on Twitter @LockedOnJays and follow the host @A_J_Andrews!Subscribe on Himalaya, Google Play, Spotify, and iTunes! This episode is sponsored by Jays From the Couch and the Locked On Podcast Network. We are coming in hot today on the podcast! The late night fires are stoked!Ryan Andrews goes off on the recent Ken Rosenthal report that the Blue Jays are looking to trade Justin Smoak, Aaron Sanchez and Marcus Stroman. The host tears a strip off the front office for even thinking about trading all three of them, when really only two of the three should be put on the market. The second half deals with last night's loss in Anaheim, and how it was actually a good baseball loss for the team. An early Monday edition of Locked on Jays? Has the world gone mad?Not so! Ryan Andrews begins with a sane dissection of the plans for the Blue Jays this off-season, using the roadmap that Roy Widrig of Jaysfromthecouch.com has laid out for the club in the offseason. The news isn't great for some Jays players, but the philosophy of the latter half of the 2018 season plays a big role in the 2019 direction for Roy.The second segment sees Andrews discuss an MLBTR.com piece from Mark Polishuk where Justin Smoak is on the trade docket. The host runs down the candidates before landing on a target that they wrote about two years ago for Smoak. The circumstances may have changed but Andrews believe they have been right all along.Speaking of right all along, Andrews closes by basking in the glory of their correct World Series prediction, and takes a stab at determining who wins between Los Angeles and Boston. From Sandy Leon to Scott Alexander, no stone is unturned as the Nova Scotian makes their prediction.Follow the podcast on Twitter @LockedOnJays and follow the host @NeoAC18!Subscribe on Google Play and iTunes! This episode is sponsored by Locked on NFL and Locked on NBA. A jam-packed Fan Friday edition comes at all the good Blue Jays fans!Host Ryan Andrews with an interesting proposition from Cameron MacPherson on MLB realignment and how that would shake out. Andrews offers their thoughts on where MLB should be looking to expand, with Montreal a high priority, and how Rob Manfred and the others should take the opportunity to modernize and unify the game. The second segment is dedicated to the first base conundrum facing the Blue Jays next season. While Rowdy Tellez is making a push for an MLB role next year, Justin Smoak and Kendrys Morales stand in his way. Andrews suggests that one of the veterans could be moved, by not in time for Rowdy to start with the club. They also enlist the help of Jays From the Couch writers Shaun Doyle, Roy Widrig and Jeff Q for their opinions on moving Morales. In the final segment, Andrews floats the possibility of the Blue Jays making a move to acquire the beleaguered Sonny Gray in the off-season. The Nova Scotian contacts resident Yankees experts David Brown, Mel Morales and Caillou Borden for their thoughts on what the price tag could be should the Yanks look to move on from the former All-Star.Special thanks to @CMacpherson39, @KarenSoutar1, @AimeAiden, @YourNiagaraHome, @gm10xnm, @jaysin2020, @rolewiii, @jeffquattro, @DoyleJftC, @davidtabrown, @melmora_, @CaillouBorden12, and @Flames_Jays_83!Follow the podcast on Twitter @LockedOnJays and follow the host @NeoAC18!Subscribe on Google Play and iTunes! This episode is sponsored by Vivid Seats, Locked on NFL and Locked on NBA. It took some to recover, but Ryan Andrews is finally ready to talk about what happened last night, with your help! The host tries to wrap their head around what exactly the Blue Jays managed to do in last night's stunning seven-run comeback in the ninth inning against the Rays. Recapping what occurred, Andrews waxes poetic about how innings like that can restore faith in baseball, and praises the youngsters (Dwight Smith Jr., Rowdy Tellez, Jonathan Davis, Danny Jansen and Lourdes Gurriel Jr.) as well as the steely veteran Justin Smoak, who delivered the final blow.Sam Gaviglio is the focus of the second segment. Andrews cites Karen Soutar's assessment of Gaviglio as a future swingman for the Blue Jays and Roy Widrig's article on JaysFromTheCouch.com about the state of the 2019 Blue Jays rotation and where Gaviglio fits in. The bullpen also gets a look, complete with more praise for Tim Mayza and some for David Paulino as well.Andrews closes with a discussion about the news that MLB has placed Addison Russell on administrative leave. On the night after one Ryan put up an amazing performance for the Blue Jays, it's up to another Ryan to match him!Ryan Andrews opens the episode with by gushing about the start Ryan Borucki turned in against the already-relegated Orioles, and how the young lefty was able to assert himself on the mound. With performances like this, Andrews defies anyone who tells them that Borucki is not meant to be a fixture of the Blue Jays rotation for the foreseeable future and how important it is for the team to get pieces like Borucki into place. The middle segment looks at the hitting the Blue Jays have gotten, and Andrews has praise for the likes of Rowdy Tellez, Danny Jansen, and yes, Kevin Pillar. The Nova Scotian notes how important it was for the younger bats to generate early runs without the help of the long ball, and how that approach is going to be crucial to the club's success. Jansen gets particular praise for stabilizing a position that has been a black hole offensively for the Blue Jays. The final third looks ahead to tonight's second game against Baltimore, and starter Aaron Sanchez. Andrews stresses the importance of Sanchez continue the trends that they have shown in September, avoiding needless walks and getting back to setting up the fastball the way they did against the Red Sox, and how the Blue Jays will use the rest of the month getting Sanchez back into ace form. The lineup, particularly Justin Smoak gets a mention as likely options against Dylan Bundy.Follow the podcast on Twitter @LockedOnJays and follow the host @NeoAC18!Subscribe on Google Play and iTunes! This episode is sponsored by Locked on Fantasy Football 24.7, and Locked on College. It is rare that one man is able to dominate an entire show, but special times call for special measures when it comes to last night's Blue Jays loss.Host Ryan Andrews puts the alligator boots to Yangervis Solarte for his unacceptable effort on the eighth-inning pop-up that allowed the winning run to score to put the Red Sox over the Blue Jays. The normally pleasant Nova Scotian can not contain their rage at the continued lack of care Solarte has put on the field, and how damaging it is for his teammates, including younger players like Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Teoscar Hernandez and Danny Barnes. The second segment is turned over to let the fans to get their licks in. Many fans agree that Solarte's lazy and lackadaisical play can not be tolerated by the Blue Jays and that he should be moved out as soon as the off-season hits. The final segment sees Andrews address how best to remove Solarte from the picture. Andrews contrasts the option the Blue Jays have with him against Justin Smoak and with Brandon Drury, who is essentially Solarte with effort. The host comes to the conclusion that the buyout is the best option, and sites the Josh Donaldson saga as proof that is the direction the Blue Jays will take.Special thanks to @KarenSoutar1, @BigCal1964, @kerry_a23, @swillc, @hallamaniac07, @ctrain_nl, @Twihard59, @biggles14, @DeeTee416 and @rockitman61 for their contributions to today's podcast!Follow the podcast on Twitter @LockedOnJays and follow the host @NeoAC18!Subscribe on Google Play and iTunes! This episode is sponsored by Locked on Fantasy Football 24.7, ZipRecruiter and Locked on College. After a medical issue forced the shared observance of an off-day, host Ryan Andrews is back for another week of Blue Jays talk as the season winds towards its conclusion!Andrews leads a dissertation on the lessons learned from the Cleveland series, starting with everyone's favorite son Rowdy Tellez. Andrews examines where Rowdy's performance has put him on the Blue Jays map moving forward and what the club can do with him in 2019 given Justin Smoak and Kendrys Morales occupy his position. In the second segment, Andrews turns to the pitching and the starts that the Blue Jays delivered over the weekend. Marco Estrada was solid, but the Nova Scotian believes the Magician will need to put a couple more good shows together if he wants to reappear on the 2019 roster, then wonders if Thomas Pannone hasn't edged ahead of Sean Reid-Foley in the battle for a 2019 rotation slot. The final third is dedicated to the bullpen and a new strategy that the Blue Jays seem to be adapting from Ross Atkins and Mark Shapiro's Cleveland days. With Taylor Guerrieri and David Paulino both working single innings in the series, Andrews wonders if this isn't a tactic to get longer arms in the Toronto bullpen to combat the durability and length issues that the team has seen sink their starters this year.Follow the podcast on Twitter @LockedOnJays and follow the host @NeoAC18!Subscribe on Google Play and iTunes! This episode is sponsored by Locked on Fantasy Football 24.7, ZipRecruiter and Locked on College. Some days there are not many things to talk about in Blue Jays land. This is not one of those days.In a rare weekend appearance due to yesterday's absence, host Ryan Andrews discusses the Josh Donaldson trade and the implication of what it means for all parties involved. Andrews discusses reports that the split of the Bringer of Rain and the Blue Jays was a long time coming, and a report from the Toronto Sun's Rob Longley increases the belief that Donaldson did more than his part to hasten this split. The second segment sees Andrews addressing the Blue Jays front office and the missteps it has made, ranking it alongside the Kendrys Morales contract and the constant masking and deception used to protect their assets. The Nova Scotian also addresses the fan base that is looking to abandon the club, noting that there have been other instances that would have been worth leaving the club for. In addition, Andrews admits Donaldson was going to be as much as part of the future as Curtis Granderson, and briefly discusses his departure as well.In the final segment, Andrews discusses the Granderson trade further and does their best to pronounce Demi Orimoloye's last name. The host also praises Justin Smoak and his pinch-hit grand slam that delivered the lone Blue Jays bright spot on a night where the team really needed it. Aaron Sanchez is let off the hook because of Smoak's heroics, and Sanchez is not mentioned in today's show.Follow the podcast on Twitter @LockedOnJays and follow the host @NeoAC18!Subscribe on Google Play and iTunes! This episode is sponsored by Locked on Fantasy Football 24.7, For HIMS and Locked on College. Andrews also apologizes for all the Potato World jokes they have made over the years, but they still get a Russ Adams joke off.In the second segment, the two discuss the recent Women at Bat event held by She's 4 Sports and Whitzman details how her story became one of perseverance and grinding through mascot costumes and the MLB Fan Cave process to the point where she could represent and interact with the Blue Jays fans. The East Coasters also discuss how baseball can improve its issues with diversity and recent social media issues that have arisen with younger players Whitzman highlights Kevin Pillar as an example of a person who has learned from their error and the part that the Blue Jays played in aiding that process. The final segment features Whitzman coming up with social media solutions for this season's Blue Jays team (without using Vladimir Guerrero Jr.) and Andrews brings in a new segment dedicated to initial host Shaun Doyle, and asks Whitzman some of Life's Tough Questions.
