Karen Fang is a film scholar and cultural critic who writes about the intersection of eastern and western aesthetics in global culture. She is the author of the book, “Arresting Cinema: Surveillance in Hong Kong Film”; Professor in the Department of English at the University of Houston; a founder and chair of a college-level initiative in Media and the Moving Image. In addition, Karen has become a regular contributor to the nationally broadcast public radio program, “The Engines of Our Ingenuity”. She is currently working on a book about “Bambi” artist and Disney Legend Tyrus Wong. Karen also initiated and helped Produce a short documentary on Tyrus’s friend and contemporary, the pioneering immigration attorney Y.C. Hong.

Vincent Powell has been directing and producing in multiple formats for over 15 years. Vincent has built his career on hard work, an eagerness to learn and experiment, and the sheer joy of creating art that audiences enjoy. He is a graduate of Texas Southern University’s School of Communication & holds an MFA in Film & Television Production from the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts. And he is the Technical Director of the African-American Film Critics’ Association.

This Emmy Award-winning cinematographer began his visual arts career over thirty years ago as a still photographer and has evolved into a very effective cinematographer. Through training under the direction of master photographer Dean Collins and five-time Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Allen Daviau (ASC), McKee mastered the art of capturing life through still and moving images. Holding factory certification, he served as a trainer and demo artist for both Fast Media and Pinnacle Systems for their post-production and live broadcast products.

Lydia Hance is the Founder Artistic Director of Frame Dance. She has been named an Emerging Leader by Dance/USA and has led Frame Dance in performances from the Galveston pier onto the METRO light rail, in the backs of U Haul trucks, downtown tunnels, and into museums, stages, and warehouses for the past ten years. A champion of new music composers, her work deepens interdisciplinary and multi-generational collaborations, and investigates the placement of dance in our lives. She is a choreographer, curator, filmmaker, educator, and dance writer who passionately believes dance should be a part of our every day lives. She holds degrees in Dance Performance and English Literature from SMU and trained at the Taylor School, Graham School, Tisch School of the Arts, Limon Institute and SMU.

ERNESTO MARTINEZ BUCIO The Future (2018), narrative Writer/Director Mexico Ernesto Martínez Bucio was born in Uruapan, México in 1983. He graduated with a BS in Communication at the ITESO (Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Occidente) and also graduated with a degree in filmmaking at the CCC (Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica). Bucio is a two-time grant winner of the prestigious FONCA (the Mexican arts and culture national foundation). He is also an alum of the Berlinale Talents. His short films have been official selections in important festivals worldwide such as Cannes, San Sebastián, Rotterdam, El Cairo, Morelia and FICUNAM.

This week Jason talks with Loris Simon, the Founder of The Literally Short Film Festival. As a filmmaker herself, the festival focuses on film around the world less than 25 minutes.

Ya’Ke Smith, known for his unflinching and veracious style of storytelling, is a rising voice in independent cinema.His films have received world-wide acclaim, screening and winning awards at over 90 film festivals. The Director’s Guild of America, the Student Academy Awards, HBO, Showtime, and the City of Buffalo, NY, which proclaimed February 23, 2013 as Ya’Ke Smith Day, have honored him. His short, Katrina’s Son, screened at over 40-film festivals and won 14 awards. The film was also eligible for the 2012 Academy Award in short filmmaking. His debut feature, WOLF, which NPR called “an impressive piece by a young director,” premiered at the SXSW Film Festival and has gone on to screen and win awards at festivals across North America. The film is now available for download via several Video-on-Demand outlets. His short film, dawn., made its television premiere on HBO in February of 2015, and screened on the network for two years.

Stephen Bent is from Baytown, TX. He is native to Louisiana however he has lived in Baytown, TX for 27 years. He is a Sterling High School graduate who took courses at Lee College then studied film production at Houston Community College. He currently works at Lee College in the box office and technical crew of the Performing Arts Center. He has written, produced and directed 4 short films and has worked on a few films as a PA. His latest project, "Brunch" is currently in a few film festivals.

A few of her television credits include Guest Starring Roles on "This Is Us", "ER", "Always Sunny In Philadelphia", GRAVES, “The League", "So Notorious", and most recently "AJ and The Queen" She has done Broadway as well as Off Broadway Shows...Her film credits include “Up Close and Personal", "Conspiracy Theory, "To the Bone", "Frank and Ava", and the soon to be released film "Magic Max'. She is currently involved in producing feature films as well as some television projects.

In looking at African-American women emerging as leaders to the national forefront, Entertainment Attorney Jalene M. Mack will not be overlooked. Jalene is not only an entertainment attorney but has successfully integrated the demanding roles of wife, mother, actress, playwright, producer, writer, founder of a performing arts nonprofit by keeping the focus on her long-term goal “to make an impact on the entertainment industry”. Born on January 10th in Kansas City, Missouri, Jalene was raised from the age of seven in the City of New Orleans where her sense of “involvement and participation” was established and nurtured through collective community celebration of culture and the arts. Educated through the Catholic school system and immersed in dance and theater from childhood, Jalene developed a deep rooted passion for the arts with an emphasis on education early in life.

Shawn Harris, owner of Lazy Park Entertainment, LLC, has a long-held passion for filmmaking. After creating several short videos for corporate holiday parties, Shawn fully committed to filmmaking after working on set for local feature film productions. She formed Lazy Park Entertainment to fulfill her creative vision, which is to fill your “lazy day” with entertaining stories birth from personal truths. Shawn went on to write, direct, and produce a family documentary short, Celebrating Freedom. It debuted to rousing applause and critical acclaim at the family’s annual reunion. She made her fiction-writing debut in 2017 with her first narrative short, Doorbell, and went on to produce and direct the film. It premiered at the 2018 Houston Black Film Festival and was sold on Vimeo until it was made public early this month. Shawn is currently writing a short film and is in development on two documentary shorts. Alongside producer, writer, and director, Shawn is also a production manager. She holds a B.S. in Finance and an M.S. in Technical Communication. She currently serves on the Board of Women In Film & Television Houston. She loves to spend time with her husband, travel, and flip houses.

His films have screened and won awards at over 50 film festivals. He has also directed commercials and winning 6 Addy Awards in 2018. Guess what? There is much much more. Kenneth Dupuis is a Southeast Texas based freelance Producer, Director, and Editor with over a decade of experience. In 2016, he founded Flatcap Productions, to produce television and commercial content. Dupuis was the producer of the award winning historical fiction short film “The Example.” Gordon S. Williams is a graduate of Lamar University with a Bachelor of Science in Communication with an emphasis in Broadcasting. Williams is a multi-award winning writer, producer, and director for his company G Sharp Productions and LUTV Productions. The seventh short film he wrote and co-produced “The Example,” has been accepted to over 30 film festivals/venues, received 13 awards, and has garnered distribution deals from Amazon Video, Shorts International, Kweli.TV, and Indieflix.
