Author Diane Fanning joins us tonight to discuss the case of Susan McFarland, who disappeared and was found in a way no one would wish on their worst enemy. Get her book Gone Forever on Amazon. About the book:Susan McFarland watched, powerless, as her husband, Rick McFarland, went into a downhill spiral of get-rich-quick schemes, quirky shopping trips, and prescription-drug abuse. Susan, a rising star at a major corporation, finally had enough. When she decided to call it quits, Rick ended her life, leaving three young boys - ages 5, 8, and 11 - without a mother.A two-month long search by law enforcement and volunteers found no trace of the missing woman. Rick knew where her charred body was but told his boys that their mother would be back - she just needed a break from them. What would the future hold for the three innocent boys caught up in the perfect storm of betrayal and murder?Diane Fanning is the author of the Edgar Award finalist Written in Blood: A True Story of Murder and a Deadly 16-Year-Old Secret That Tore a Family Apart. Follis began his career working for major advertising agencies such as FCB/Chicago and DDB Worldwide in New York. In the mid-1980s, his entrepreneurial career began with freelance work for such major New York shops as Chiat/Day, Della Femina and Kirshenbaum & Bond. His work on the Kenneth Cole account resulted in awards and national press. In 1988, Follis co-founded Follis&Verdi, with clients such as The American Stock Exchange, No Excuses Jeans, Solgar Vitamins and Sorrell Ridge Fruit Spreads—a case taught at the Harvard Business School and featured in Forbes. In ‘93, Follis/DeVito/Verdi won 9 ADDY Awards making it the second most awarded agency in New York. That same year Follis formed Follis Inc to include a focus on non-traditional and online marketing. In 2003, in response to the shifting media landscape and to provide an alternative to the traditional ad agency model, Follis created "Follis Marketing Therapy". And, in 2006, Follis created "The Follis Marketing Report" blog and "The Marketing Show with John Follis" podcast syndicated on iTunes. How did you get started in advertising and marketing all those years ago?Well, first of all, thank you for having me on your show. Yeah, I'm looking forward to this. So yeah, I started a while ago and I was always good creatively growing up as a kid. The question was how to question was how do I apply that creative talent to a career? And I was probably halfway through college when I got pulled aside by an instructor who was teaching a graphic design class and she asked me what I wanted to do with my life. And when I said I wasn't sure if she said, Well, I think you are to really seriously consider pursuing something either in advertising or communication arts or some kind of media because you're really really talented. So had it not been for that instructor? I'm not sure I would have pursued that. But you know, that helped a lot. And after she gave me that idea, I transferred to a university Syracuse University that had one of the best advertising programs in the country. So that's how I started on that track.Where are you in Chicago first or New York first.John's response:So I grew up in Connecticut, and I was I was going to school in upstate New York and Syracuse and then after graduation, I didn't feel I was ready for New York City, even though that is the mecca of advertising as some of your listeners may know. They call it Madison Avenue. But I was I was a little intimidated by New York so did not go there. Like many of my classmates did it and started out my career in Atlanta, Georgia, two years in Atlanta. Then I got felt that wasn't fast enough for me. So I moved up to Chicago, spent three years there and after that, I felt like I was ready for the for the big leagues and moved to New Yorkhttps://www.follisinc.com/therapy.htmhttps://www.youtube.com/c/JohnFollisBIV

I had an amazing opportunity to connect with the team at Mint Advertising. Here is some background information on both of the founders Al and Eric: Al Navarro Al co-founded Mint Advertising after 13 years in the industry. His career began at the New York outposts of Grey Direct and J. Walter Thompson Direct, where he learned “old school” direct marketing. But things really started to happen when he moved to Rapp Collins (also in New York), where he worked on ADT Home Security, Delta Air Lines, Hyatt Hotels, and Mercedes-Benz. Al's work on the launch of the Mercedes M-Class Sport Utility Vehicle was honored with top awards in both the Caples and Addy Awards shows — and garnered response rates as high as 59%. He is probably the only agency person you will meet who has been mentioned in GQ (positively!) and Automobile magazine (twice). Eric Schoenfeld Before co-founding Mint, he was the VP of Business Development for Brann Worldwide in Wilton, Connecticut. Eric's career has carried him through the ranks of some of the world's biggest direct marketing agencies, including Rapp Collins (where, still in their mid-20s, he and Al were responsible for running over $40 million of business) and Wunderman Worldwide. He has lent his talents to clients such as ADT Security Services, Callaway Golf, Becks Beer, Sony, and the United States Postal Service. Mint Advertising Mint Advertising is an award-winning creative consultancy based in Clinton, NJ that offers a wide range of consumer and B2B marketing services. I've been called a thought leader and an expert, but I've also been called bad names by trolls, so it balances out. My job is leading digital strategy for a kick-ass agency called Cornett in Lexington, Ky. (2021 Ad Age Small Agency Gold Winner in the Southeast Region). My experiences have given me the opportunity to speak at conferences, write three books and be called all sorts of superlatives by Forbes, Business Week, Entrepreneur and others. To serve the small business community, I offer a few select marketing coaching calls each month. Let's connect! https://jasonfalls.com/get-winfluence/ I host a pair of podcast on C-Suite Radio. Digging Deeper - Make Creativity Your Business Advantage is a weekly interview series focused on creativity and marketing. Winfluence - The Influence Marketing Podcast dives deep into experts on influencer marketing and is a supplement to my latest book. I'm also on the Global Influencer Marketing Advisory Board, an industry directional organization founded by Audience2Media, a UK firm. Some people know me from founding SocialMediaExplorer.com, which at one point was one of the top marketing blogs in the world according to AdAge. I've been involved in some really cool projects over the years that have won awards and recognition. I'm particularly proud of helping form the strategy for Wonderopolis, an education effort by the National Center for Families Learning (NCFL) which was called one of the top 50 websites in the world by Time Magazine in 2013. Projects I've been a part of have also won SAMMY Awards, Shorty Awards and dozens of regional ADDY Awards. Some people call me insightful. Some call me funny and engaging. My kids just roll their eyes and call me Dad. I dig bourbon and sports.
In our first episode, District 4 Governor Jon Ruhff and Communications Co-Chair Jacob Edenfield spill the tea on what makes an ADDY Gala great, why Troy Dunn of Dunn&Co. in Tampa loves the ADDY Awards, how and why you should enter the Angel Awards, and what the students are doing now that will be commonplace in the not so distant future.

When I called Robert Pennybacker a “Renaissance Man” during my interview he seemed not to know why I attached the term to him. I can say with some confidence that folks in Robert's network see him as exactly that. He is a poet, writer, producer, director, traveler, technologist, deep thinker and the very definition of both a specialist and generalist. He is also one of the founders of HIKI NŌ, arguably the most remarkable state student news network on Planet Earth. This is no joke, listeners; I am not engaging in hyperbole. There are lots of student news programs around the nation, but none with the mission and vision, nor the scope and reach of HIKI NŌ. A USC Film School graduate, Robert has driven HIKI NŌ forward for 10 years now, the last year a remarkable pivot during this Covid-19 pandemic. He is the Vice President of Learning Initiatives at PBS Hawai'i, where HIKI NŌ lives. This program's impact on kids is simply staggering and today we are going to hear how it was built and what drove Robert to move it forward. Robert Pennybacker's resume is long and deep. Early on he was a local television marketing director. In late 2000 he started his own advertising/production company called Pennybacker Creative, LLC, then joined PBS Hawaiʻi as Vice President of Creative Services in late 2007. His awards and recognition include the 1984 Regional Emmy Award for Television Promotional Spots; 3 Pele Awards (Hawaii's ADDY Awards) for excellence in advertising; he oversaw the promotional campaign for one of the most successful network affiliation switches ever (when Hawaii's NBC affiliate switched to FOX). Robert is an independent filmmaker who has written more than 20 documentaries about life and people in Hawaii. As I wrote earlier, he is a poet and writer. In 2007 he became the Vice President of Creative Services at PBS Hawai'i and oversaw all local programming, on-air promotion, interstitial production, station branding, and the production of on-air fundraising for the station, as well as management of personnel. Robert and I go back pretty far. We played high school football together back in the 70s at Punahou School. He was a tight end, I played center, which makes this moment special for me. As always, our post-production and original theme music is provided by Daniel Gilad at DG Sound Creations. Check out Daniel's website to learn more, or to book him for your next music gig. If you love these episodes please write us a review and rate us in your favorite podcast store. Stay safe, wear your masks and get vaccinated when it is your turn. Episode 082 - Justin Wineburgh, President and CEO of Alkemy X This week's guest is the President and CEO of Alkemy X, a production company that brings "big ideas to life by working together in an end-to-end process that allows (them) to ideate, produce, and deliver faster (and better) than you ever thought possible." Alkemy X has offices in offices in Philly, LA, NY, and Amsterdam, and their team has a proven track record of bringing a unique approach to every production or project they are involved in. Justin is not your average lawyer. In fact, as Justin points out during this episode, he considers himself a "reformed lawyer." He built the entertainment practice at Cozen, by maintaining strong friendships that eventually led to a big opportunity. In the course of representing one of Justin's best friends, in a lawsuit over the film The Ring, Justin found himself quickly making a name for himself as an attorney that could help film and entertainment producers get things done. This opportunity begot other opportunities, which eventually led to Alkemy X (check them out here: https://www.alkemy-x.com/), a production company based in Philadelphia, reaching out to Justin because the company was failing. Alkemy was hit hard by market factors (the commoditization of post-production equipment, consolidation of the market for post-production services, etc.), and found itself spread thin, having difficulty in a tough film/media production market. Justin, who at the time had served as outside counsel for Alkemy, came up short when he tried to help by recruiting a new CEO to rescue Alkemy. That’s when Alkemy's Chairman of the Board asked Justin if he would be willing to take over the company. This was in November 2015, and Justin had built a large media-and-entertainment law practice at Philly-based Cozen O’Connor, and was enjoying life as a partner. Justin, knowing the media and entertainment business to be a fickle one, actually said "no." But, ultimately that did not end the discussion. Justin knew his life would be pretty solid if he continued on at the firm, but wanted a challenge. Something inside of him told him this new opportunity could provide a big upside as well as add some excitement. As Justin mentions in this episode, he just thought to himself "the worst thing that can happen is I have to go back to being a lawyer." So Justin finally decided to resign from Cozen and take on a new challenge at Alkemy. He started on February 1, 2016 and has since transformed Alkemy into a top production house, including receiving recognition by winning six 2019 Addy Awards from the Philly Ad Club, including "Best of Show" for The Plastic Ocean. Justin has also expanded the business and added a strong VFX line. Here for your listening pleasure are the Self Made Strategies of Justin Wineburgh. On this episode you will hear Justin discuss: How Justin started a thriving media and entertainment legal practice Why doing something once really well can catapult your career The importance of being an active student, even in the face of great success How to identify the leading minds in your field and learn from them Why understanding the important details of your business is critically important for success (in Justin's example, from the episode, as distribution outlets were changing formats were changing that brought on the need to understand the impact of those changes on a budget of a project) Why asking the right questions asking as well, and why you shouldn't have any shame or feel weakened by asking someone to elaborate How to find the skills and assets that uniquely qualify you to be successful Justin's best practices for bringing an organization "back from the brink," as he did with Alkemy X Production Credits: This Self Made Strategies Podcast is a SoftStix Productions LLC jawn. This episode was produced and hosted by Tony Lopes, REMOTELY (because of COVID-19) in Philly; and edited by...

He began painting a child developed his own impressionistic style and started to see the world differently from that point on, using surroundings as inspiration and appreciating the little things in life.Following his passion for art become challenging when he lost the strength of his hands and the ability to create. He transitioned into pursuing a career in television production or radio broadcasting, as his voice was unaffected. However, while at Palm Beach Gardens High School, he discovered an elective course called “Commercial Art Technology.” With the aid of computer software that replicates traditional painting, typesetting, layout and with the use of two fingers on his left hand, he is able to manipulate a mouse and have no limitations due to his disability. Brockman graduated with a BFA from Digital Media Arts College. He was awarded the Distinguished Artist Award after graduating at the top of his class. Brockman has won multiple Addy Awards. His technique is a hybrid of Impressionism and Realism. All his works are unique composition, although photography is referenced for correct proportions. It is an extremely time-consuming process that requires hours of research on the subject matter before the canvas is opened. He is the principle at Single Handed Studio where his artwork takes on a wide range of subject matter. As a South Florida native, much of his work reflects the ocean, landscapes, and a beachside lifestyle, although his work runs the gamut and is not limited to a specific genre including influential athletes and musicians, historical events and satire statement pieces. Each piece creates a story with the goal to bring the viewer into the subject matter to experience it firsthand.Digital Artist:https://www.singlehandedstudio.com/'To Subscribe to Podcast: EddiePodcast.comMore on Eddie Stephens: www.EddieStephens.com
An impromptu episode with Jason Falls (Author, Digital Lead at Cornett) covering Influencer Marketing. Jason Falls I've been called a thought leader and an expert, but I've also been called bad names by trolls, so it balances out. My job is leading digital strategy for a kick-ass agency called Cornett in Lexington, Ky. My experiences have given me the opportunity to speak at conferences, write two books (a third on the way from Entrepreneur Press in late 2020/early 2021) and be called all sorts of superlatives by Forbes, Business Week, Entrepreneur and others. To serve the small business community, I offer a few select marketing coaching calls each month. Let's connect! I host a pair of podcast on C-Suite Radio. Digging Deeper – Make Creativity Your Business Advantage is a weekly interview series focused on creativity and marketing. Winfluence – The Influence Marketing Podcast dives deep into experts on influencer marketing.

[Ep 199] Today I'm chatting with NavPress Publisher Don Pape. Don has published over a dozen New York Times best-sellers, including Crazy Love by Francis Chan. Don is also the publisher of Julie Cantrell's Into the Free, which won the 2013 Christy Book of the Year Award. He led a team that won 20 ADDY Awards between 2008 and 2010 for David C Cook titles recognized for best cover or book design. Born in Brazil, Pape graduated with a bachelor of arts in political science from Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada. He speaks fluent French and Portuguese and is married with three sons. His multicultural publishing career in sales, marketing and graphic design has led him to a variety of roles, including executive, literary agent and consultant. Don and I met years ago when my first book came out, and he jokes in the interview that he's not an expert, but let me tell you, he is. And I'm honored to call him a friend, as well. His focus has always been in the Christian publishing industry, but even if you're writing for the general market, you'll hear about changes in publishing in general and learn from Don how writers can and should practice their craft. Here's an excerpt: "The reality for authors is that they are much more engaged in their book than in the past. In the past you could probably give your book over to a publisher and then go back to your Hobbit house and start writing again. Now, you've got to give the book to the publisher and then get fully engaged with the marketing team and the publicity team as to how to reach the consumer—and addressing it in a way that it will reach the right people. And who best knows the content of the book—who better—than the author?" Click on the podcast player (above) to listen in on my conversation with NavPress Publisher Don Pape. Reach and relationships are the lifeblood of a successful real estate business, and it all starts with social capital. What is social capital and how can you leverage it in your business? How do you stay connected socially in your local market? What is the most important metric when it comes to connecting people? On this episode, I talk to Meghan Barry & John Brian Losh from Who's Who in Luxury Real Estate about the power of social capital. Luxury agents need to be highly connected and highly educated in the higher-end market. Being highly educated and knowing how to position a luxury home is vital. -Michael LaFido Takeaways + Tactics For building a new connection, there’s nothing more important than a personal introduction and endorsement. It’s not about the wealth of the people you’re connected with-- it’s about reach and whether they are good people. Being a connector of people to property, people, and agents is critical. At the start of the show, we talked about how Who’s Who got started and the vision Brian had for it. Next we talked about the concept of social capital and why it’s so critical for a luxury real estate agent. We then shared on how to stay connected socially in your local market, and why being a connector is so powerful. We also discussed: The importance of being highly educated and connected in your market Why knowledge resonates with luxury buyers and sellers Why the social capital conversation is so necessary When you think about how connected we are with social media and texting, it’s easy to connect with people but it’s not always a real true connection. Social capital is how you build authentic connections. Being a connector of people to property, people, and agents is really important. It shows people that you really know your local market and the market beyond your own reach. Having that ability resonates people who are buying in the high end. Guest Bio John Brian Losh is the founder and chairman of Who's Who in Luxury Real Estate, and Meghan Barry is the president. Who’s Who is a worldwide collection of top brokers representing the finest luxury properties across the globe, and has been leading the real estate industry since 1986.
