Tweetable Quotes: “And so the story about [Steven Holcomb's] eyes, his vision, and his bounce back from basically legal blindness was already becoming a big news story. So, we did a press conference and I brought up my little portable eye testing equipment, I checked his eyes and I gave him the thumbs up and cleared him to compete in the Olympics. And then he won the Gold Medal with his three other teammates, Curt Tomasevicz, Steve Mesler and Justin Olsen.” (08:29) (Dr. Brian) “When Steven won that Gold Medal, he would say that I saved him, but in a way he also saved me because he solidified the validity of the procedure. Essentially there was an Olympic Gold Medal behind the C3R Procedure at the time.” (10:00) (Dr. Brian) “At the time, there were these Chechen terrorists that were bombing train stations in Russia. And The U.S. State Department had put out this notice saying all Americans should cancel going to the Sochi Olympics. So, because Steven was going and I knew his family wasn't going, I had this very strong gut feeling that I needed to go to support Steven. I called a buddy of mine who had high-level connections and asked what do you think? He said, ‘Brian, Putin is going to make sure that the Olympic Games are safer than driving down the freeway.'” (11:10) (Dr. Brian) “That was one of the reasons that I wanted to help these filmmakers with this documentary because it's paying tribute to Steven's legacy. He remained so incredibly humble even after everything he had accomplished. His teammates talk about that in the film too. Always down to Earth, always just being so helpful. He was just such an incredible, inspirational person.” (15:16) (Dr. Brian) Links Mentioned: Link to the film Holky: The Steven Holcomb Story on Indieflix (a film in which Dr. Brian was one of the producers) - https://watch.indieflix.com/movie/z1jvXp2ah0MZ-holky-the-steven-holcomb-story (https://watch.indieflix.com/movie/z1jvXp2ah0MZ-holky-the-steven-holcomb-story) DM Dr. Brian your questions and we will respond back with answers - https://v.cameo.com/F5MH0Hglnmb (https://v.cameo.com/F5MH0Hglnmb) https://www.boxerwachler.com/ (Dr. Brian's Website)

She is also an Emmy-nominated costume designer for the original TV series, “The Wonder Years”.That was the beginning of a long and storied resume that now includes creating films to engage, empower and teach communities, schools and corporations. The goal:  to help us lead happier, healthier and more connected lives.Tackling Tough TopicsConnection, of course, is key.  That ever-elusive element when tackling tough topics — like race. Andreen's approach is rooted in the belief that you must meet people where they are.  From there, you can foster conversations that lead to trust and understanding.“RACE To Be Human” shows us the impact of racism on our mental health through the lens of students, experts and educators. It's a powerful film that is meant to open discussions in the classroom, the workplace and at home, promoting empathy, healing and compassion. What Does It Mean To Be Human? In January of 2021, I did an Our Voices Matter podcast episode called “What Does It Mean To Be Human?"I was compelled that day to share my raw, unfiltered thoughts in response to the assault of a previous podcast guest. One year later, Andreen's brilliant documentary addresses that same question in a different way.The courage and vulnerability of the young people who share their stories is breathtaking. Our job is to listen and believe what they say.www.ourvoicesmatterpodcast.comwww.lorellemedia.comThis podcast is devoted to empowering us all to better understand each other's differences...one story at a time.  Emmy Award-winning journalist, Linda Lorelle, guides guests through insightful, unexpected conversations that reveal our common humanity.  This show is not about politics per se; it is about finding a way to reclaim civility in the context of the contentious times in which we live, by sharing our personal and professional stories, in hopes that others might find a glimpse of themselves.Support the show (http://patreon.com/OurVoicesMatterPodcast)

Clinical psychologist Dr. Jerry Bubrick talks about a new social media documentary, the “Like” movie, and how we can help our kids deal with phone anxiety. Teens today are basically guinea pigs when it comes to the effects of social media. They're the first generation to grow up with the almost constant presence of cell phones. And while it's still too early to really know how this is affecting their developing brains, studies are already showing links between heavy social media use and things like anxiety, depression, and body image issues. A new social media documentary, called "Like," explores the impact that social media and cell phone use are having, and the filmmakers want to inspire us to better regulate our social media and phone use.  Take a look at the trailer for the "Like" movie. This week we’re interviewing someone who was featured in the “Like” movie, Dr. Jerry Bubrick. In addition to having teen daughters, Dr. Bubrick is a clinical psychologist who deals with anxiety disorders. He has both the real-life and clinical experience to not only explain the effects of social media on today’s teens, but to also offer hope and advice on how we can help our own children deal with the anxiety surrounding social media. From Dr. Bubrick’s bio on the Child Mind Institute’s website: Jerry Bubrick, PhD, is a senior clinical psychologist in the Anxiety Disorders Center and director of the Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Service at the Child Mind Institute. He is a cognitive and behavioral psychologist who specializes in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Widely recognized for developing one of the world’s most intensive pediatric programs for OCD, he is a pioneer in using cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to treat children and teens with OCD and related anxiety disorders. Dr. Bubrick has provided direct patient care, supervised psychiatric residents and trained child and adolescent psychiatrists and psychologists in the CBT treatment for anxiety disorders. He has led workshops on OCD and anxiety disorders, and in his role as a public lecturer he has presented at primary and secondary schools, academic medical centers, community health organizations and professional conferences. He also co-authored Overcoming Compulsive Hoarding, the first book ever written on the topic. A dedicated advocate for children and their families, Dr. Bubrick is a significant public voice educating parents and teachers about the fear at the roots of anxiety — and how it’s effectively treated. Scilla was in Hong Kong screening her latest film ‘Angst’ in schools, to parents and members of the community. Scilla shares her life journey with us giving us a glimpse into how she began her career in the film industry, eventually starting her own company IndieFlix. Scilla was bullied as a child and that was the inspiration for her getting on board to help distribute ‘Finding Kind’ where Lauren Paul and Molly Thompson who made this film explore the bullying epidemic amongst girls in particular. These women started a ‘Kind Campaign’ to spread kindness around the globe and Scilla was thrilled to be part of growing this movement. Scilla was also one of the producers of a film called ‘Screenagers’ and she shares why she is so passionate about the topic of teens and their use of technology. The film helps parents and teenagers navigate the digital age. Scilla discusses her most recent film ‘Angst’ and shares her deeply personal story that was the catalyst for her embarking on this film project about anxiety. This moving and inspirational film provides us with tools to manage anxiety whilst opening up the dialogue about this uncomfortable issue that affects so many of us. Scilla and her producing partner Karin Gornick have made it “kind of cool to talk about anxiety” and this film ‘Angst’ is helping so many people who are lucky enough to view it. This film gives permission to people to talk about their vulnerabilities and their fears. Scilla also shares details about her next project ‘LIKE’ which is about the addictive nature of social media and the dopamine that is released when we receive likes on our social media pages. Her hope is that anyone who watches ‘LIKE’ will be inspired to self-regulate their use of technology" says Scilla.
