Today's podcast guest is Emily Cole. Since 2015, she owns the Savannah Bananas along with her husband Jesse. They have disrupted the entertainment aspect of baseball to "cause fun" for these fans. During her career, she found that she was having more fun pursuing baseball/sports related jobs during her 5-10 (5pm to 10 pm) as her 9-5 was not providing the same amount of purpose or passion. She does what "Most People Don't" because she creates amazing customer experiences with her favorite people. In addition, their company contributes heavily to their community and has recently created the foundation to celebrate the foster care community. https://bananasfoster.org "The Bananas' 2023 tour involved games stretching from California to Maine, drew more than 550,000 fans, had a ticket waiting list of more than 1 million names, and boosted the team's TikTok following past 7.6 million — more than doubling last year's total and larger than MLB's official feed." Today on the podcast is Coach Angela Reckart! Coach Angela Reckart, the head coach of men's and women's cross country and assistant coach of track & field (distance) at Duke University, has quickly made an impact on the program. In her first season, Reckart led the Blue Devils to remarkable success as both the men's and women's distance units shattered program records, achieved 19 top-five program marks, and saw three individuals qualify for the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. The team's achievements were highlighted by standout performances from athletes like Emily Cole, CJ Ambrosio, Nick Dahl, and Michaela Reinhart. Under Reckart's guidance, the program has witnessed significant growth and promising results, cementing her reputation as an accomplished and influential coach. Her previous coaching experience at Penn State and North Carolina also demonstrated her ability to develop All-Americans and foster record-breaking performances. Today's conversation was super fascinating. I've been loving these discussions with NCAA coaches, and Coach Reck brought the heat to today's conversation! It was so much fun unpacking a plethora of subjects surrounding team and personal excellence with someone who thinks about this subjects on a daily basis. Emily Cole is an All-American NCAA D1 runner, social media creator and health advocate. Her passion for running started relatively late in high school but the structure, routine and feeling it created fostered the motivation to excel. Her dedication to training and nutrition was tremendous but her lack of knowledge was life threatening. After spending the most important race day of her life in a coma induced by hyponatremia, she decided to invest in herself and her sport physically and mentally. Her personal experiences inspired her to write a book about sports nutrition and dedicate her mindset to making the most out of each day. The result: she helps others “find balance while fueling their dreams.” @emilycole, @duketfxc
How did 17-year-old track athlete Emily Cole go from running with her teammates one day to waking up from a coma two days later? The surprising answer is healthy eating. I'll let Emily tell you the details of her brush with death and it's not a spoiler to say that she is absolutely thriving now. In fact, not only is Emily excelling on the track at D1 Duke University, she is building a successful career as a student athlete. Thanks to a change in the law that allows student athletes to finally profit off their own name, image, and likeness, Emily has written a book called The Player's Plate, has a wildly successful TikTok and Instagram and teaches other student athletes how to market themselves on her podcast, The Player's Platform. Welcome to the Planted Runner. I'm Coach Claire Bartholic and my mission is to help you improve your running, your mindset, and your life with science-backed training and plant-based nutrition. Today, you'll learn: The common mistake that runners make with healthy eating that almost killed Emily, The lessons Emily learned about what true nourishment is for athletes, and How nutrition for athletes is so much more that what you put on your plate Don't forget to stay tuned all the way to the end for another Mental Strength Minute. Just as Emily Cole was preparing for her state high school cross country meet, she fell into a coma instead. Emily suffered a condition as a result of too little salt which shut down her body. Now a Duke All American athlete, Emily joins us to talk about her new book that covers her journey back to wellness and how traditional tropes about nutrition could actually be harmful. https://theplayersplate.com@emilycolewww.tritomrendurance.comwww.therecoveryloungetn.co
-THE PLAYERS' PLATE: https://www.amazon.com/Players-Plate-Unorthodox-Sports-Nutrition-ebook/dp/B0BGJNGKTW Back for her second appearance on the podcast, is the one and only Emily Cole. Emily recently published her first book, The Players' Plate! She has worked endlessly over the past few years to make this dream come true. Today's conversation on the podcast is a celebration of Emily's hard work, dedication, resilience, and heart. Emily challenged the status quo when she set out to make this book a reality as she has with everything else in her life. Emily is constantly defying the odds, and she did so with this book. Only 3% of people who start writing a book finish it. Only 1-2% of manuscripts end up being published. The average non-fiction book sells about 250 copies in the first year; Emily sold over 1,000 just in the first few weeks. The average age of a first-time author is 36, and Emily is 21. In this conversation, I ask Emily questions surrounding the book, its process, the lessons she's learned from it, who made it possible, and so much more! I hope you all take time to listen to our conversation, and consider buying a copy of The Players' Plate if you haven't already. This could be a life-changing piece book that impacts their lives significantly. This book can change someone's destructive beliefs surrounding nutrition and turn them into solid scientific evidence about what nutrition should look like. Please like, subscribe, and share with your friends if you enjoyed today's episode! You can also give us a five-star review on Spotify & Apple (: Lastly, a thank you to Emily. Jesse and Emily Cole, the owners of the the world famous Savannah Bananas, share how they bet on their vision and themselves to create one of the most popular teams in sports history. In this special Bananas takeover of the podcast, the Coles talk about how they revolutionized the game of baseball by pulling in lessons outside their industry, reframing their concept of failure, and placing fans first in everything they do. They also share their approach to parenting and the fulfillment they've gained though being foster parents. The Savannah Bananas are an exhibition baseball team based in Savannah, Georgia. The team was founded in 2016 and has played at Grayson Stadium since its inaugural season. Until 2022, the Bananas competed in the Coastal Plain League's (CPL) West division, where they won three Petitt Cup championships (2016, 2021, and 2022). The team has sold out every game since the first season in Savannah and every city on the Banana Ball World Tour. The team has been featured by ESPN, The Wall Street Journal, and Sports Illustrated because of its on-field hijinks and viral videos.
In this interview Wealth & Wisdom Podcast episode, host Nicole Hagen interviews Duke University student athlete and author of The Players' Plate, Emily Cole. Nicole and Emily talk about the blurry line between excelling as an athlete as a result of being vigilant about training and nutrition and allowing that vigilance to turn into obsession and malnutrition. Emily shares the reason for writing The Players' Plate - thinking that she knew what healthy eating was in her early years as an athlete only to realize that she was making herself sick and not performing at her highest potential as a result. If you're a female athlete toeing the line between optimal nutrition and obsession, or you know and love a female athlete navigating the world of Sports Nutrition, be sure to tune in to this episode and check out Emily's book - available now on Amazon. The Savannah Bananas think there's a better way to do almost everything. So they try it all. Some people may think they're crazy. But they are okay with that. No matter what, they just want one thing - to make baseball fun and ultimately give fans the best possible experience at the ballpark. They call this Fans First. Emily Cole is the owner of the Savannah Bananas with her husband, Jesse Cole, which is all about making baseball fun with a Fans First mentality. They're passionate about making baseball fun and are currently planning the 2023 Banana Ball World Tour which will take the Bananas across the US. They are also licensed foster parents and currently have 3 kiddos in their home. Prior to her work with Fans First Entertainment which began in 2011, Emily spent time with Ripken Baseball and the Augusta GreenJackets as well as the Vermont Lake Monsters and the Binghamton Mets. Emily's biggest passion with the team is working with the full-time staff, interns, and hundreds of game-day staff workers to focus on the culture, service, and logistics of events held at the ballpark. Season 6, Episode 25 of the Better Learning Podcast Kevin Stoller is the host of the Better Learning Podcast, Co-Founder of Kay-Twelve, a national leader for educational furniture, and Executive Director of Education Leaders' Organization, the exclusive peer network for School Leaders.
Emily Cole is the Owner and Director of Fun of the Savannah Bananas, a viral sensation and touring baseball team centered around the idea of fans having a great experience, win or lose. Since graduating college, Emily has worked with several baseball franchises and consistently discovered new ways to put the fans first and create unique and memorable experiences you wouldn't find at other ballparks. After 7 years of experience in the baseball industry, Emily and her husband created the Savannah Bananas, one of the most recognizable baseball teams outside of the major leagues due to the way they create a phenomenal fan experience. In this interview, Emily goes bananas about putting fans first, eliminating friction, and making baseball fun. Putting Fans First "For us, it is always going to come down to putting fans first." Fans come first. It's a simple recipe to success, and it's something the Savannah Bananas have made sure they always prioritize. Whether it's the unlimited food included with the price of your ticket or watching the middle-aged dad dance team, Emily has made sure there is something for every type of fan at a Bananas game. By creating a truly memorable experience where there is something for every guest big or small, the fans feel included. They'll rave about the positive experience everywhere, leading to increased media presence, more ticket sales, and people coming back for more. However, putting fans first goes deeper than the scripted experience. In every aspect of the operation, Emily has ensured that the fans are always the center of attention. Before players even get their uniform, they go through a multiple-hour course about putting fans first to ensure that the players are creating the best experience possible. By bringing in players and employees dedicated to the fans, Emily has made an operation that truly makes everyone a part of the family. Eliminating Friction "Your experience as a fan is scripted long before you come." It's simple, guests don't enjoy it when there are inconveniences. However, Emily shares how the Savannah Bananas experience is scripted as close to perfection as possible. By thinking about the possible roadblocks and learning from previous mistakes, guests will find their experience to take much less work. Although unlimited free food may sound like a logistical nightmare, the operation works perfectly for the guest, and they get to avoid line delays from payment issues, as well as taking out their own wallet. Emily knows the Bananas aren't immune to curveballs. After announcing their locations for their upcoming season-long tour, the website shut down because there were so many people trying to buy tickets. While this is a good problem to have, it's important to still learn from these mistakes and try to make the guest experience as frictionless as possible, whether it's online, in the stands, or in the ballpark. Making Baseball Fun "We're a baseball team. but we're better known as a traveling circus." Baseball is a popular sport, but it isn't loved by every single person. By creating a fun and interactive experience, Emily has seen the Bananas go from players refusing to dance all the way to choreographed dances that go viral on TikTok. By working to create a team that has fun with the fans, baseball can be fun for everyone. In addition, the Bananas don't script their games, keeping the same competitive spirit that baseball is loved for. After every game, the Bananas host a block party where all the dancing dads, grandmas, mascots, and players meet with the fans and sign autographs. By encouraging the players to spend time with the fans and the fans to spend time with the players, Emily has created a symbiotic relationship that encourages and fosters growth in both the guest and employee experiences. On this episode of More Than Running, I had a great conversation with Duke senior athlete Emily Cole. Emily competes in the steeplechase, and this year she placed 7th at the NCAA Championships and qualified for the USA Championship. Emily is most well known for her social media presence on TikTok and Instagram where she shares daily training, motivation, and her life as a student-athlete. She has been successful in the NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) space as well working with brands and monetizing her social media. Our conversation is focused on Emily's launch of her book The Player's Plate this week! She will be the first student-athlete to monetize a book published while in university. The Player's Plate was designed to share real practical information for athletes who are aiming to fuel their bodies and minds. Emily was inspired to write the book after she struggled with her own nutrition in high school leading her to a coma due to over hyrdation and low sodium levels. Emily is a breath of fresh air and a very inspirational to athletes who are aiming to take ownership over their own nutrition. Over the past years of podcasting, there are clear attributes that I hope every guest I have on has. Some of these are that they are inspirational, well-thought-out, enthusiastic, joyful, lighthearted, and full of wisdom. Emily Cole checked every one of those boxes because of that, this is one of (if not the) favorite podcast I've ever recorded! Behind the 88k followers on Instagram and 7.8 million likes on TikTok is a genuinely amazing human being. The 60-minute conversation that Emily and I had yesterday, is full of nuggets of wisdom. We dive into her wildly successful life from running, NIL, and her latest book, “The Players Plate”. We also touch on the importance of being well-rounded, why a strong support system is crucial in life, how her family has impacted her, life wisdom from her sister Julia Cole, and so so much more! This episode is packed from beginning to end with inspirations and stories that will inspire you to chase after those goals in life. This conversation truly left me walking away with a smile on my face and I'm confident it will do the same for you (: I will be having another conversation with Emily later this month for a deeper dive into her book, “The Players Plate”. So stay tuned for that! Until next time, enjoy my wonderful conversation with the wonderful and ever inspiring, Emily Cole! You might know Ruth Chappell as the lady behind Dressage Anywhere, but she is a lady of many talents, and her previous life in publishing has helped me a HUGE amount over the last few months. As promised on last week's episode, she's on the podcast talking all about it! Ruth used to work in publishing full time and has brought all her skills to the project of getting my book into the world! In this episode, we take a deeper dive into the book process- really useful if you're thinking of writing your own book, because as I said last week, the writing might be the easy bit for you too! In addition to Ruth and the part she played in the book's 'birth', we also talk about Emily Cole's designer wizardry and wonky spines, and Jane Badger's amazing knowledge and very kind hand-holding with the end bit of the process!
In this episode, coaches Jen and Aaron are joined by Savannah Bananas owner Emily Cole. Additionally, we've got guest host and winner of the Umpire Appreciation contest, Parker McCorey. Together, they'll discuss what it's like owning a team along with incorporating humor into the game of baseball. Before the Savannah Bananas came into being, Emily worked with other teams. Emily started at Rifkin Baseball and worked her way up, which is where she met her yellow-tuxedo-wearing husband Jesse. Their working relationship grew over time into a baseball collaboration and then into a marriage. The epic proposal that Jessie gave Emily led to Emily organizing a trip to Savannah, where they discovered that the stadium in the city no longer had a team. The following year, the Savannah Bananas were born. When it comes to creating the fun and wacky aspect of the team, Emily explains how the ideas are formed and how they love to break down the barriers between players and fans. Emily goes on to discuss their recruitment process for new players and the initial problems they had to get talent. The player intensity and personality are equally important to the Bananas, especially with the amount of social media content and dancing involved. Then, Emily tells us about both the worst and best skits that they've performed on the field. Emily and Jesse also own another team called the Party Animals, the arch nemesis of the Bananas. With the invention of Banana Ball, the Bananas needed opponents, thus came the Party Animals. We learn about what Banana Ball is and why there's a time limit on games. For the Savannah Bananas, it's all about fan focus and creating memories. Find us online: Instagram: @theslidepodcastshow Facebook: www.facebook.com/theslidepodcast Twitter: TheSlidePod

Unless you are a seamhead living under a rock, you have probably seen or at least heard about the Savannah Bananas, turning the baseball universe on it's head, down in Georgia. Attending a Bananas game is tantamount to going to the circus, and a baseball game, or something that closely resembles one, breaks out. From ballplayers playing on stilts, to the Banana Pep Band banging out music in the stands, to the 60 year old and over senior citizens dance crew called the Banana Nanas, you never know what you are going to experience in Historic Grayson Stadium, but you know the focus will be entirely on exciting baseball and non stop entertainment. The Savannah Bananas have become a viral sensation with over 52 million followers on Tik Tok alone. How did this happen? This is the story of how Jesse and Emily Cole built this exploding empire from the ground up, in a highly skeptical city, where the Coles were not looked at as baseball saviors, rather the next group of owners who were coming to town to fail. Boy were they wrong.... This is the story of the Savannah Bananas
