The more I got into running my own business, the more I found this to be true. I am by no means perfect when it comes to using words, and I still find myself questioning and stumbling in certain areas today. However, I can say that the impact of creating safety with words and making my clients and team feel heard has been a valuable skill, allowing me to build a business that can hopefully make an impact for my team and my clients.  This week, I am looking forward to uncovering the power of words. On today's show, Alex and Calvin are thrilled to be joined by Dr. Patricia Fancher, a Continuing Lecturer in the Writing Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In her fabulous new book Queer Techné: Bodies, Rhetorics, and Desire in the History of Computing, Dr. Fancher offers a groundbreaking history of how the Manchester University Computer and discourses about it were shaped by queerness, embodied gender performativity, and invisibilized gendered labor in the early 1950s. Some of the figures that Fancher's book offers new understandings of include Alan Turing, Christopher Strachey, Audrey Bates, and Cicely Popplewell, with each case study capturing how technical communication and technology development are about more than just usability, efficiency, and innovation. A recurring theme in Dr. Fancher's rhetorical reading of Turing and his colleagues is that there is something queer, performative, and playful about intelligence, and that these dimensions are mostly ignored by the hype around so-called “artificial intelligence” tools like large language models. To explore this theme, we chat about Christopher Strachey's rudimentary love letter generation program, comparing its output to ChatGPT's for similar prompts. We ultimately explore what Turing might have thought of LLMs, and how we can begin to ask queerer questions of our digital tools to produce more interesting and intelligent discourses and technologies. His family was with him at Mass General Hospital when the neuro-oncologist said he had three months to live. “Six, if you start radiation.” With no time to lose, the family searched out every conceivable treatment, as quickly as possible. Neil chose to enroll in a clinical trial at the Burzynski Clinic in Houston. Though dogged by controversy throughout his career, Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski has achieved miraculous results treating many patients with “incurable” cancers, including some with DIPG. The medical system designed to protect patients like Neil instead proved as intractable as the disease in his brain. DIPG: Eternal Hope versus Terminal Corruption is the first book of a trilogy, covering the time from misdiagnoses to diagnosis, and from choosing and commencing treatment to being denied treatment. Through a long series of moves and counter moves, Neil was caught in the middle of a life and death chess game, against an opponent that was less than above board. This book is dedicated to everyone who feels abandoned by the very institutions we believed were established to safe guard our rights. Engineering design is a technical as well as a social process. Developing an awareness of factors affecting groups' dynamics during the decision-making process can help improve team-based engineering experiences. In this conversation, Drs. Robin Fowler and Trevion Henderson share their research and practical knowledge about ways of supporting equitable collaboration among students who identify with historically marginalized groups.Bios:Dr. Robin Fowler is a Teaching Professor in Technical Communication and an Engineering Education researcher at the University of Michigan. Her teaching is primarily in team-based engineering courses, and her research focuses on equity in communication and collaboration as well as in group design decision making (judgment) under uncertainty. She is especially interested in how power relationships and rhetorical strategies affect group judgment in engineering design; one goal of this work is to understand factors that inhibit full participation of students who identify with historically marginalized groups and investigate evidence-based strategies for mitigating these inequities. In addition, she is interested in technology and how specific affordances can change the ways we collaborate, learn, read, and write. As a writer you have the creative freedom to explore the avenues of your imagination which bring you the most joy. You can choose the niche that matches your preferences, from technical writing to creative writing. Job growth: According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the employment of writers and authors may grow 4% from 2021 to 2031, which is similar to the average growth for all occupations. With the support of his partner and children, writer David Payne has been creating stories daily since late 2021. He participates ferociously in Stories on Fire and National Novel Writing Month. His first published story, "Wraith and Specter" appeared in Future's Lens (Jan 2023). "Escape and Transform" appeared in Reality's Lens (May 2023). David writes the story that inspires him in the moment, though he tends to settle into speculative fiction. On stream, he writes each day both as a form of accountability and to inspire others to the craft. His focus is entirely on getting the words on the page and letting the editing table sort out the details later. He's played many different table-top RPGs over the years and has interests in game theory from Poker to Magic the Gathering. To relax, he'll fire up a game of Dwarf Fortress. He likes to joke that if a game was created more recently than a decade ago, he isn't really interested, but the truth is he likes retro-style and turn-based games. Professionally, David is a technical writer and has been a part of the field for over twenty years. On February 3, a Norfolk Southern freight train carrying vinyl chloride and other hazardous chemicals derailed in the town of East Palestine, Ohio. Fearing an explosion, emergency crews conducted a controlled burn of several of the cars, releasing toxic chemicals into the air and forcing the evacuation of local residents. In the ensuing weeks, pictures and videos were shared across social media of dead fish in local waterways and other sick animals throughout the region, followed by official reports of soil, air, and water contamination posing health risks to wildlife and human beings. In spite of conflicting safety information coming from the EPA, Norfolk Southern, and other government officials, residents have continued to express concerns over the long-term environmental and health consequences for Eastern Ohio.On today's show, we explore the perspectives of East Palestine residents with our co-host, co-producer (and reporter!) Sophie Wodzak, who traveled to the area and interviewed local residents in the aftermath of the derailment. Her co-authored article in the New York Times explores conflicts between East Palestine residents and the local, state, and federal officials who shaped its mainstream media narrative in the wake of the disaster.Joining us in this conversation is Dr. Erin Brock Carlson, Assistant Professor in the Department of English at West Virginia University, whose research focuses on the ways that rural communities organize to self-advocate on issues of environmental justice. Together, we explore the importance of legitimizing the local residents' situated knowledge - a type of knowledge grounded in a person's direct experience of an issue's consequences - in environmental policy conversations and media framing.Sophie's co-authored article in the New York Times: “Federal Officials Send Help After Ohio Derailment, but Residents' Frustrations Persist”Dr. Erin Brock Carlson's relevant research on situated knowledge and environmental organizing:Carlson, E. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it

Everything has a history, even breakfast cereal. And that history is involved with the history of grain–which means it is involved with both the history of agriculture and urbanism; how humans mark time during the day; meal customs, which means it's also involved with the history of the family; nutrition and health, and all the ideas and fears involved with those terms, as well as the history of science and, believe it or not, the history of religion and of political progressivism;  and, since the late twentieth century, marketing and mass-culture. Breakfast cereal, it turns out, is connected to just about everything. With me to talk about her new book Breakfast Cereal: A Global History is Kathryn Cornell Dolan. She is an associate professor in the department of English and Technical Communication at Missouri University of Science and Technology. Her previous books are Beyond the Fruited Plain: Food and Agriculture in US Literature, 1850-1905 and Cattle Country: Livestock in the Cultural Imagination. For Further Investigation Previous podcasts interlink with this conversation in ways that I didn't anticipate. Rachel Laudan spoke about the history of food in Episode 44; Jonathan Rees and I discussed nutrition and diet as part of our conversation about J. Harvey Wiley in Episode 222; and John Arthur talked about the importance of beer to nutrition and culture throughout world history in Episode 253. Atlas Obscura has an article on the surviving buildings of the Battle Creek Sanitarium. They are amazingly big. If you would like to benefit from the wealth of C.W. Post, you can do so thanks to his only child, Marjorie Merriweather Post who grew the fortune even bigger. She also built amazingly big houses, including one in Florida she named Mar-a-Lago...can't think if I've ever heard of it before. Her home in Washington, DC, was Hillwood, and is now a museum now open to the public. Kathryn's book is notable for having recipes at the back. Until you buy it, you can content yourself with these porridge recipes from around the world, collected by at Saveur magazine. Who hasn't at some point really craved turkey congee? What is “Denialism”? Jean Goodwin, JD, PhD, SAS Institute Distinguished Professor of Rhetoric & Technical Communication, NC State Website | Twitter: @jeangoodwin and @PublicSci_NCSU What drives polarization on contested issues like GMOs? We'll discuss one potentially surprising factor. Abstract Public debates have been trending increasingly bitter and polarized since the 1990s, increasingly so over the last decade. Science-heavy debates on issues like climate change, pandemic policies and of course agricultural biotechnology are no exception. In this “work in progress” presentation I review recent scholarship on the extent, drivers and implications of polarization in the two most studied situations: US politics (liberal v. conservative, Democrat v. Republican) and climate change. I close by inviting participants to reflect on the significance of this lit review for “denialism,” “anti-science,” “war on science” et sim. in the GMO debates. Speaker Bio A twisty path through law and classical rhetoric has led Dr. Jean Goodwin to an interest in scientists' participation in civic controversies. As a member of the Leadership in Public Science cluster, “I not only ‘think' but also ‘do' that,” helping with programming intended to foster commitment to, and capacity for, public-facing science at NC State University. Goodwin received her bachelor's degree in mathematics and her J.D. from the University of Chicago, and her Ph.D. in communication arts from the rhetoric program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition to more than 25 years in the classroom introducing undergraduates to the rhetorical tradition, she has mentored graduate students across a variety communication subfields and academic departments. Her essays have been published in international journals in communication, philosophy and the sciences. She has served as a consultant on initiatives by the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Union of Concerned Scientists to define the appropriate roles of scientists as advocates. In this episode of Align Podcast with Gerald Pollack, we talk all about the different types of water and whether water can have memory. Gerald tells us about the ‘fourth phase' of water and how this relates to the research between water and DNA. We also discuss how important easy water is for us and how this can increase the energy in our bodies. We question everything we know to be true about water and whether what we have been taught by textbooks is truly accurate.  Gerald Pollack received his PhD in biomedical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968. He then joined the University of Washington faculty and is now a professor of Bioengineering. He is also the Founding Editor-in-Chief of the journal, WATER, convener of the Annual Conference on the Physics, Chemistry and Biology of Water, and Executive Director of the Institute for Venture Science. His interests have ranged broadly, from biological motion and cell biology to the interaction of biological surfaces with aqueous solutions. His 1990 book, Muscles and Molecules: Uncovering the Principles of Biological Motion, won an “Excellence Award” from the Society for Technical Communication. His 2001 book, Cells, Gels and the Engines of Life, and his newest book, The Fourth Phase of Water: Beyond Solid, Liquid, and Vapor won that Society's “Distinguished Award,” their highest distinction. The latter book went on to receive the World Summit Excellence Award. Pollack received an honorary doctorate in 2002 from Ural State University in Ekaterinburg, Russia, and was more recently named an Honorary Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and foreign member and Academician of the Srpska Academy. Listen to this interview of Jo Mackiewicz, Professor of Rhetoric and Professional Communication at Iowa State University and editor of the Journal of Business and Technical Communication. We talk about welds that hold and about sentences that stand. Jo Mackiewicz : "Oh, I'd definitely agree that people can be motivated in what they're learning when they appreciate the art of it. I mean, for instance in welding, you need to put in a certain number of hours in order to have your mind and your body work as one in this technique — you know, you need to become the technique. And that kind of thing doesn't just happen. Your body has to do it over and over and over again for you to become an artist, or in the terms I use in the book, an expert. And those hours that you spend practising in a welding program, or in a writing program for that matter — those hours are all just building up your practice hours, building up your technique, and you keep continuing on towards true expertise."
