WeTransfer x TalkArt special episode recorded live at Whitechapel Gallery. Recorded in front of a sold out live audience at @WhitechapelGallery we speak with @DominicJohnson and Jamal Butt to explore the current HAMAD BUTT exhibition: his life, art and legacy. ❤️ Thank you to @WePresent for organising this exciting event!Apprehensions is the first major survey of #HamadButt (b. 1962, Lahore, Pakistan; d. 1994, London, UK). One of the most innovative artists of his generation, Hamad Butt was a pioneer of intermedia art, bringing art into conversation with science, whilst also referencing his Queer and diasporic experiences. He offered a nuanced artistic response to the AIDS crisis in the UK, taking a conceptual rather than activist approach.Butt's conceptually and technically ambitious works seamlessly interweave popular culture, science, alchemy, science fiction, and social and cultural concerns, as forms that are simultaneously poetic and provocative. They imagine sex and desire in a time of ‘plague' as seductive yet frightening, intimate yet isolating, compelling yet dangerous – literally, in some cases, threatening to kill or injure.Born in Lahore, Pakistan, and raised in East London, Butt was British South Asian, Muslim by upbringing, and Queer. A contemporary of the Young British Artists, and their peer at Goldsmiths' College, London, Butt was described by art critics as epitomising the new ‘hazardism' in art of the 1990s, as his works often imply physical risk or endangerment.Follow: @WhitechapelGallery and @WePresent and check out WePresent today to see a series of never-before-seen artworks by Hamad, generously shared by Jamal. This episode is brought to you by our friends at WePresent, the Academy Award winningarts platform of WeTransfer. This week, Izzy and Murtada discuss the film of the summer. No, it's not Superman, and it's definitely not Eddington. It's Taxi zum Klo—Frank Ripploh's 1980 film about a gay public school teacher in Berlin who is forced to reassess his preference for casual sex when he enters into a relationship with a cinema worker named Bernd. The restoration of this extremely modern, incisive film premieres at Metrograph in New York City on August 1. Izzy and Murtada also discuss the aforementioned Superman and Eddington—why Superman's politics are surprisingly bold and Eddington's are annoyingly toothless, what James Gunn offers the DC Universe, and where Ari Aster can go from here. In this episode of Productivity Smarts, host Gerald J. Leonard chats with Steven Puri, a former Hollywood studio executive turned entrepreneur. Steven has worked on blockbuster films like Independence Day and Transformers, but today he's focused on helping remote workers stay productive, happy, and focused through his company, Sukha. Steven shares his personal journey and what led him to rethink productivity. Instead of chasing long hours and constant hustle, he now believes in working with intention and finding flow. He talks about how our environment, like having a creative workspace, can really boost performance. Drawing from his Hollywood background, he explains how the same creative principles can apply to remote work. The conversation also dives into Sukha, an AI-powered tool he created to help people manage overwhelm. It helps users stay focused by organizing tasks, using music to encourage deep work, and creating simple, structured workflows. Throughout the episode, you'll hear plenty of practical tips, like how to mentally “commute” to your home office, how to work in sync with your body's natural energy patterns (your chronotype), and how to use AI as a support tool rather than a replacement for creativity. What We Discuss [02:01] Introduction to Steven Puri [05:49] Evolution of productivity: Then vs. now [09:22] Steven's film industry background [11:24] Legacy and meaningful work [12:47] Flow state: Hollywood lessons for remote work [16:48] Environmental triggers and productivity barriers [19:44] Morning routines and focus [21:54] Leadership lessons from film for remote teams [28:30] Chronotypes and personal productivity rhythms [30:20] Maintaining boundaries in remote work [33:35] AI and the future of remote productivity [36:44] How to connect with Steven Notable Quotes [07:40] "Now, I really measure my productivity by the effect, not by how many hours I work." – Steven Puri [08:39] "I was just burning the candle at both ends and being really productive, but after I recovered, I realized I was more productive by being mindful and intentional." – Gerald J. Leonard [21:47] "You talk a lot about purpose and intention. These are powerful. When you apply them, powerful things happen." – Steven Puri [24:28] "It's always about the other thing. The part of your mind that does the cool, 'ooh, peanut butter and chocolate' — that can only function when you have something else to focus on." – Steven Puri [35:33] "It's not AI that's replacing you. It's people who know how to use AI. Because someone who really understands how to use it can do the work of 10 to 20 people." – Steven Puri Our Guest Steven Puri is the Founder and CEO of The Sukha Company with the mission to help millions of people find their focus, achieve more and have a healthy work life. Steven's career started as a newscaster/interviewer for the #1 youth news show in the DC/Baltimore market (on WTTG-TV) and then as a junior software engineer & Thomas J. Watson Scholar at IBM. After attending USC in Los Angeles, he began working in film production and produced computer-generated visual effects for 14 movies including Independence Day which won the Academy Award for Visual Effects. Steven's first tech company was Centropolis Effects that produced those CGI effects, and he eventually sold it to the German media conglomerate Das Werk when he was 28. Steven then produced some indie films and eventually went studio-side to develop and produce live-action features as a VP of Development & Production at 20th Century Fox (running the Die Hard and Wolverine franchises) and an EVP at DreamWorks Pictures for Kurtzman-Orci Productions where he worked on Star Trek, Transformers and more. Filmmaker James DeMonaco (THE PURGE franchise, THIS IS THE NIGHT) joins Adam and Joe to discuss his career journey and the making of his new feature THE HOME (in theaters now). From growing up in Staten Island with no viable connections to the film industry… to teaching himself how to write scripts armed with only a copy of Syd Field's book SCREENPLAY… to briefly attending NYU film school where he made a friend with a means to securing some financing… to making his first independent film RED which lead to a student Academy Award… to how his script for JACK (co-written with Gary Nadeau) lead to an industry bidding war… to working with cinematic icon Francis Ford Coppola and the brilliant Robin Williams on the project… to writing films like THE NEGOTIATOR, the remake of ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 and SKINWALKERS before getting the opportunity to direct his screenplay for LITTLE NEW YORK… to creating the worldwide blockbuster franchise THE PURGE and why he and his producing partner Sébastien K. Lemercier have continued to shaped the franchise through five (soon to be SIX) films… to how visiting family members in elder care facilities lead to the idea for THE HOME… to the casting of SNL alum Pete Davidson and the great John Glover in leading roles of the film… to what it was like shooting a film with a cast of elderly people during the tail end of COVID…to learning that every writer needs a “Mad Hungarian” and tons of other anecdotes he's learned throughout his career… this honest conversation about the path of becoming a filmmaker is one that every artist can benefit from.

Like a seashell to your ear, we are here. In this extra special episode of To the White Sea we are thrilled and honored to welcome Academy Award-winning sound editor Skip Lievsay, who has worked on more Coen brothers movies than the Coen brothers themselves! This paradox wrapped in an enigma will be unraveled along with so much more. Together we listen closely to scenes of “perfect quiet” when the volume of the soundtrack drops down to almost zero, yet it's in this zone where a whole galaxy of perception may be unlocked. We explore how these quiet scenes build tension, intimacy, tactility, and subjectivity. We also discuss Skip's fascinating working relationship with the Coens, as well as Martin Scorsese, Terrence Malick, and Darren Aronofsky. Immense thanks to Skip Lievsay, Kyle Miller, Mitchell Wareham, and Nina Leitenberg for their time and effort. Mega special thanks to Kate Sanford making this connection. Although nominated for an Academy Award for his role as Henry VIII in the 1966 film A Man for All Seasons, audiences now may know Robert Shaw best for his role as Captain Quint in the 1975 film Jaws. Having been released a decade later, Shaw’s performance as the grizzled shark hunter served as an important role in the Hollywood blockbuster, mixing a drunken tone with a confident look that sold viewers on the idea that he could help defeat any animal. Shaw’s life story— from his work in theatre to his time making movies— is all referenced in a new book written by his nephew titled Robert Shaw: An Actor’s Life On The Set Of Jaws And Beyond. For this week’s FilmWeek feature, we sit down with book author Christopher Shaw Myers about his uncle’s work and his new book. This week on The Big Picture Podcast we're joined by celebrated photographer and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Misan Harriman.Harriman has built a global following through his moving black and white photography of the world's most recognisable faces, becoming the first ever Black photographer to shoot the cover of Vogue.Since then, he made his directorial debut with the emotional short film ruminating on grief, The After, which was nominated for an Academy Award in 2024.His new documentary, Shoot The People, chronicles his own story as he travels the world drawing inspiration from the Anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa, Black Lives Matter in the US and the Gaza ceasefire movement here in the UK.But what makes Harriman stand out is what he chooses to turn his lens, and his platform, towards. Since October 7, he's been a staple of pro-Palestine rallies, searching through the crowds for individual protesters with a message that resonates with him, and showing that to the world. Before that he covered the Black Lives Matter movement, framing ordinary people in extraordinary ways, giving them the same intimate and dramatic treatment he gives to the world's rich and famous. And through his lens, he sends a message. We'd love to hear your thoughts on this episode, and any guests you'd like us to have on our show. By Any Means Necessary: Spike Lee & The Making of Malcolm X Cinema can change attitudes, englighten ignorance, strengthen understanding and faith. In 1992 director Spike Lee would partner with star Denzel Washington and long-time cinematographer (and NYU schoolmate) Ernest Dickerson to bring to the big screen the life of one of the most important firgures of the 20th Century, Malcolm Little to become "Red" to become Malcolm X, to become el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz. In an expansive narrative that covers over four decades and - could be argued - encapsulates the experience of Black life in the history of the United States, Spike Lee's Academy Award ignored film (save Denzel Washington's Best Actor Nomination that was lost to Al Pacino for Scent of a Woman) is certainly one of the great artistic, social, and political achievements of the 20th Century. What started out as a reflection on this thirty-three year old film quickly revealed itself as a subject that would demand two episodes to truly understand Lee, Washington, and Dickerson's masterpiece. This week Mr. Chavez & I dive into the history of the films production (a 27 year odyssey that would see a change of directors, misunderstanding, financial complications, and controversy within the Black Community). This discussion took us to some emotional and thought-provoking places. We are honored to share this with you. As always we can be reached at gondoramos@yahoo.com. Many Thanks. A new stage production that's been inspired by the writer's own experience as an inmate. Academy Award winning playwright and director Terry George served a sentence in Long Kesh jail near Lisburn in the 1970s and his time there - when a number of successful and unsuccessful escape attempts were made. These inspire The Tunnel, a play which is being staged in Ireland for the first time, at the Lyric Theatre Belfast. Neil McCormick pays tribute to co-founder of Black Sabbath and 'Prince of Darkness' Ozzy Osbourne, discussing his musical legacy, and his final concert which raised £140 million for charity.Composer Jay Capperauld tells us about the 19th century Austrian composer Anton Bruckner's fascination with death and death masks, which has inspired his own work Bruckner's Skull, which is being performed at The Proms this Friday. And what can museums and galleries do to curb the accidental damage being done to priceless artworks by visitors who want to take selfies? Melanie Gerlis of The Art Newspaper and Robert Read, Head of Art and Private Clients at Hiscox Insurance discuss. Presenter: Kirsty Wark Producer: Mark Crossan

After a pair of un-stuffy mini-reviews of “Superman” (2025) and “Eddington”, the boys head back to 2003 to discuss the legendary film year. Our featured conversation is a first-time visit to “House of Sand and Fog”, the Sir Ben Kingsley, Jennifer Connelly, and Shohreh Aghdashloo film, directed by Vadim Perelman, shot by Roger Deakens, scored by James Horner, which is a powerhouse drama so powerful it nabbed two acting Oscar nominations. The Worthy Boys are lying on the couch and confronting our past traumas, because Ordinary People won Best Picture at the 53rd Academy Awards! Robert Redford's directorial debut stunned Hollywood by beating out heavyweights like Raging Bull and The Elephant Man. But maybe it was the right call. Ordinary People didn't shout—it listened. It told the story of a family drowning in grief, trying—and failing—to connect. With devastating performances, restrained direction, and emotional honesty, the film resonated with audiences and critics alike. It went on to win four Oscars: Best Picture for producer Ronald L. Schwary, Best Director for Robert Redford, Best Supporting Actor for Timothy Hutton, and Best Adapted Screenplay for Alvin Sargent. Too quiet for some. Just right for others. What do you think—did Ordinary People deserve the crown?
On episode 297 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson, AwardsWatch Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello and AwardsWatch contributors Dan Bayer, Josh Parham, and Jay Ledbetter to go back 50 years and take a look at the 48th Academy Awards, covering the films of 1975. On this retrospective, the AW team take a look back at what might've been the greatest Best Picture lineup of all time, featuring the films One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Barry Lyndon, Nashville, Dog Day Afternoon, and Jaws. This group of five films collectively encapsulate the type of films audiences clamored for fifty years ago and are all considered all-time classic in their own right, some being the best film within their respected director's filmography. But the interesting exercise with this line-up is looking at the lackluster films surrounding these masterful films. But this is the fun part of the process of looking back and talking about a year like this, if it is a landmark year like others in the 1970s or if it just top heavy. In their in-depth discussion, the AW team talked about the film year of 1975, briefly discuss talk about One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest as a Best Picture winner, do an extensive conversation over the below the line categories and nominees for the year, and then the new version of the AW Shoulda Woulda Coulda game, where instead of individual replacements, they must decide as a group who the nominees and winners should be in the top eight categories. The rules of the game state they can only replace two of the nominees that year from each category, except in Best Picture, where the group could replace up to three films to make up the final set of five nominated films. Like past retrospective episodes, it was a fascinating, fun conversation including spirited debates, alliances, vote swinging, celebrating various movies, performances that aren't normally talked about and more that we all hope you enjoy. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h40m. We will be back in next week for a review of the latest film from Marvel, The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Till then, let's get into it. Music: “Modern Fashion” from AShamaleuvmusic (intro), “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).

"Eddington" had its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival where it received mixed reviews for its story of the fictional town of Eddington, New Mexico, set during 2020, where a rivalry between Sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix) and Mayor Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal) reaches a combustible state of political and social turmoil caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Director and writer, Ari Aster, the masterful filmmaker behind films such as "Hereditary," "Midsommar" and "Beau Is Afraid" is not unfamiliar with this kind of polarizing response to his provocative films and in fact, he welcomes the debate, discussion and reflection in hopes that his work will bring us closer together during a time where we're more divided than ever before. Aster and Academy Award-winning star Joaquin Phoenix were kind enough to speak with us about their work and experiences making the film, which you can listen to below.
