Thanks for joining me for the ‘Man in the Mirror' podcast. My guest this week Arnaud Poulain, the Founder and Artistic Director of French fragrance brand Les Eaux Primordiales. I recently spent the morning with Arnaud, firstly listening to him being interviewed by my journalist friend Suzy Nightingale at Harrods and then the two of us got to spend some time recording this week's episode at a nearby hotel.Arnaud was in London to talk about the new Harrods exclusive fragrance ‘Ambre Supermassive', which he has created alongside his longtime perfumer, teacher and friend Amelie Bourgeois. Arnaud is unusual in that he is a trained perfumer, as well as the brand founder. He came to perfumery in his early twenties after studying engineering and embraced the new career with a real energy and fervour. He's achieved a huge amount in that short time, working first for Byredo and then eventually setting up his own brand in 2015.Les Eaux Primordiales is the sum of all his education and experience. There's elements of his engineering background, his love of architecture, his need to make things with his hands and of course his desire 'to dream'. All of this is located in the brand's own ‘domaine', and chateau in Northern France. It's an atelier where everything to do with Les Eaux Primordiales happens - the creation, bottling, the carpentry, the point of sale and metalwork. In the episode Arnaud mentioned the following products:Clarins - Cleanser face washhttps://www.clarins.co.uk/clarinsmen-active-face-wash/80085184.htmlClarins - Double serumhttps://www.clarins.co.uk/double-serum/80025862.htmlLes Eaux Primordiales - Washing Chantilly (Body Wash) https://www.leseauxprimordiales.com/collections/soin-primordial/products/chantilly-lavante-250mlLes Eaux Primordiales - Hand Washhttps://www.leseauxprimordiales.com/collections/soin-primordial/products/gel-mains-exfoliant-400mlAmerican Crew Wax- https://www.johnlewis.com/american-crew-fiber-85g/p110198890American Crew Fiber Cream https://www.johnlewis.com/american-crew-fiber-cream-100ml/p3316794Chanel No. 5 - EDPhttps://www.chanel.com/gb/fragrance/p/125430/n5-eau-de-parfum-spray/You can find the whole Les Eaux Primordiales product range online at:https://www.leseauxprimordiales.com/On Instagram at:https://www.instagram.com/leseauxprimordiales/- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -You can ‘tip' me via the link below. As founder and artistic director of relative newcomer First Look Buffalo, Bob Rusch has quite a story to tell: about his film and tv career in LA, his decision to move back to Buffalo, and his desire to create a local theater company that focused solely on plays that are new to area audiences. But first, Sandy Barillari, the entertainment manager of First Look's current venue, the beautiful new facility at Canterbury Woods, visits with Peter to talk about the genesis of and ambitious plans for Amherst's newest performing arts center.
Deneane Richburg (Choreographer, Dancer, former Competitive FigureSkater, Founder/Artistic Director of Brownbody) grew up a competitive figureskater—in spaces where she had to check her blackness at the door, as worldskating was dominated by whiteness and rooted in values that subjugated herancestry's truths; to quote Zora Neale Hurston, she always felt “most coloredwhen [she was] thrown against a sharp white background.” Richburg realizedthe need to carve out space for her ancestral history hence her decision toestablish Brownbody.Since 2013 Brownbody has honored complex narratives of U.S.-based Blackcommunities by disrupting assumptions, and disenfranchising ideologies,around blackness. She received her MFA in dance and choreography fromTemple University in 2007, an MA in Afro-American Studies from UWMadison, and a BA in English and African American Studies from CarletonCollege. Richburg has been choreographing work for both the stage and icesince 2007 most recently completing an evening-length work called “TracingSacred Steps” which brings ring shout onto the ice. Deneane was a recipientof a 2017 McKnight Choreography Fellowship, a 2019 Jerome Hill ArtistFellowship, and a Dance/USA Fellowship to Artists made possible withgenerous funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
Today on Crushing Classical, you'll hear my interview with Ariel Grossman, Founder & Artistic Director of Ariel Rivka Dance. I've never talked with a choreographer before and I just loved finding all of the parallels between our worlds. This episode is brought to you today by Happiest Musician Coaching. You are amazing, and I believe in you. What are you trying to create? What do you need your career to be and do for you? What are you not seeing that you need to do and work on? I love these conversations and supporting musicians like you. For a limited time, I'm offering a free 30-minute call to get you some clarity around your next steps, and see how I might help you get unstuck! Ariel Rebecca (Rivka) Grossman is a native New Yorker, who trained at LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and the Performing Arts and Joffrey Ballet School. In 2008, she founded an all-female contemporary company, Ariel Rivka Dance. Most recently, Ariel received a 2023 Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Ariel's work has been presented worldwide, including BAM Fisher, NJPAC, Bryant Park, NYLA, Baruch Performing Arts Center, Martha Graham Studio Theater, NYU Tisch, Rutgers University, Roxbury Performing Arts Center, and in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Houston, Cleveland, Florida, Oklahoma, Detroit, Memphis, Istanbul, Turkey, and in 2023, Perigord, France and Bari, Italy. She has been commissioned by Dance Lab NY, Konverjdans, Ballet Vero Beach, and Skidmore College. Collaborations include Rioult Dance NY, Taylor 2, Heidi Latsky, Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company, and Sean Curran. Ariel is a past recipient of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (New) Moves Fellowship, Monira Performance Residency, and a Nimbus Arts Center artist residency. ARD is an awardee of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, the Nathan Cummings Foundation, The Charles & Joan Gross Family Foundation, the O'Donnell-Green Music & Dance Foundation, Jersey City Council of the Arts, and New Jersey State Council on the Arts and more. Ariel draws inspiration from the struggles and joys of the human experience, particularly through being a woman and mother of two. Through collaboration, Ariel encourages her artists to bring themselves to the work—molding pieces that are striking, evocative, and multi-layered. This conversation was fascinating. Firstly, because I loved hearing Ariel talk about her art in a way that was both brand new to me and also completely relatable. The connections are so clear and it's amazing to think about movement, interpretation, and leadership in a totally different field than my own. Secondly, because I loved hearing her take real ownership of her own strengths - I don't hear this nearly often enough from people, even the amazingly accomplished people I'm interviewing right here, and ESPECIALLY from working musicians. I know you will love this interview. If you are in NYC, catch Ariel Rivka Dance's 15th Annual Season presented by NYU Tisch at the Jack Crystal Theater on May 31st-June 2nd, and a special family matinee co-presented by 14Y Theater on June 3rd. Here's a teaser for her upcoming collaboration, Never Fade Away Follow Ariel Rivka Dance on Instagram at @arielrivkadance or @arielgrossman; or on Facebook Thanks for joining me on Crushing Classical! Over Coffee® is on holiday hiatus. Please enjoy this reposting of one of our top podcast episodes of 2021! To choreographer and marine biologist Deidre Cavazzi, art, science and math are natural dance partners. Deidre, who is both the Founder/Artistic DIrector of ARCHITEXTURE Dance Company and Chair of Saddleback College Dance Department, finds inspiration in areas most people wouldn't equate with creating art. These include mathematical principles, environmental issues and neuroscience. And perhaps one of the most exciting aspects of her creative work, is her interdisciplinary approach. "Everyone is an artist," Deidre explains. "Everyone is a scientist." Accordingly, her Saddleback collaborations can involve the physics department, math majors and the ceramics studio. Meanwhile, ARCHITEXTURE's presentations illustrate subjects like nanoscience and California ecology. Deidre explained the ways her own background had led to her collaborative artistic projects, offered a look at the creative process behind Saddleback College's all-virtual multimedia project “Signals and Circuits”, and gave a preview of what's coming next! On this edition of Over Coffee® we cover: The multidisciplinary background that first interested Deidre in both art and science; How Deidre first decided to reach out to other departments at Saddleback College for interdisciplinary projects; A look at separate performances Deidre created, based on physics and mathematics concepts; Some inspiration sources Deidre recommends for other creatives; One of Deidre's favorite creative lessons during a trip to the Arctic with other artists and scientists; An environmental “find” that shocked Deidre and her fellow artists–and led to a powerful new performance; What works for Deidre, in translating her experiences to multimedia for her audiences; How Deidre, her students and her colleagues collaborated remotely to create their all-virtual piece, “Signals and Circuits” A look at Saddleback College's upcoming dance program, created remotely with Zoom and green screen; Some of the isolation-related innovations which Deidre expects to carry forward, post-pandemic; A look at what Deidre is currently exploring for a future collaboration!; Where to find Saddleback College's spring dance collaborations when posted;

Let's talk about the word “boss.” How do you define it? Some people see it as being a puppeteer, manipulating puppets. Others view it more like a tree, with deep roots all working together to grow and bear fresh fruit. To be very honest, I used to think of it (and myself) like a shadow hovering over my team, watching their every move. But in this episode, I have a major mindset shift on this topic and I am so excited to share it with you! In episode # 152 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I have the pleasure of introducing to you Jessica Fox, creator, director, teacher, guide, innovator, and boss. Jessica is the Founder/Artistic Director of 4th Avenue Arts, an educational learning environment that supports performing arts including theater, dance studios, and space for continuous growth! We talk about: The idea of jumping, Why not me, Building a team, And owning the word boss Head over to IG @erinpride and tell me what you think of the word “boss.” Then listen to the episode and tell me again after. "Everyone is an artist. Everyone is a scientist," says Saddleback College Dance Department chair Deidre Cavazzi. Her work reflects that interconnectivity. Deidre is a choreographer, dancer and Founder/Artistic Director of Orange County-based modern dance company Architexture Dance. And she is also a marine scientist, multimedia creator, photographer and general creative researcher. Her passion for exploring the connections between science and art have led to some highly intriguing creative work. (Want a great read? Take a look at her blog about "Exploring Landscape and Storytelling in Iceland". But be sure you have a hot cup of tea and a blanket nearby--you will feel the freezing rain and cold temperature as Deidre takes you with her!) Neuroscience, physics and mathematical concepts have all inspired some of Deidre's recent dance projects. And as she mentioned during her December presentation at the virtual California STEAM Symposium, she recruits numerous Saddleback College departments as on-campus collaborators. In addition, participating students aren't necessarily dance majors. They can come from any discipline--and can learn more about their subjects through dance. Deidre talked about the background that led to her sense of wonder and discovery, offered a look at the creative process behind Saddleback College's all-virtual multimedia project "Signals and Circuits", and gave a preview of what's coming next! On this edition of Over Coffee® we cover: The multidisciplinary background that first interested Deidre in both art and science; How Deidre first decided to reach out to other departments at Saddleback College for interdisciplinary projects; A look at separate performances Deidre created, based on physics and mathematics concepts; Some inspiration sources Deidre recommends for other creatives; One of Deidre's favorite creative lessons during a trip to the Arctic with other artists and scientists; An environmental "find" that shocked Deidre and her fellow artists--and led to a powerful new performance; What works for Deidre, in translating her experiences to multimedia for her audiences; How Deidre, her students and her colleagues collaborated remotely to create their all-virtual piece, "Signals and Circuits" A look at Saddleback College's upcoming dance program, created remotely with Zoom and green screen; Some of the isolation-related innovations which Deidre expects to carry forward, post-pandemic; A look at what Deidre is currently exploring for a future collaboration!; Where to find Saddleback College's spring dance collaborations when posted; A preview of an exciting upcoming collaboration, scheduled to originate in Galway, Ireland
Movement is the way through which we express ourselves and our body the medium. But does the verbal language we use in class, whether it be used for a correction, for instruction or to describe a particular quality/energy affect the way we move? How can language be used as a teaching tool in the dance class and what are some of the effects of language that is detrimental to the physical and cognitive well being of our dancers? Today we will explore those questions and more with the help of Ms. Blanca Huertas-Agnew GUEST: Blanca Huertas-Agnew began her training in her native Puerto Rico. She was a member of the corps of ballet at Ballet Concierto de Puerto Rico, later, joining Ballets de San Juan, as a Principal Soloist. Her professional career allowed her to perform across the globe including the United States, Central America, South America, and Europe. Blanca has a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Temple University, an MFA in Choreography and is certified to teach dance through various certification programs. Blanca is currently the Founder and Artistic Director of the Puerto Rico Classical Dance Competition, and on faculty and The School of Pennsylvania Ballet. Whenever I have mentioned his name in musical circles the reactions are often mixed…but I have long understood that in the arts such a reaction more often than not means I've struck intellectual gold. Beneath an often-misunderstood character, is an intellect of such massive value, that what should shock American trumpet players is that he isn't more widely lauded as one of the best American trumpet players of the 20th and 21st centuries. I am happy he has joined the Faculty at DePaul, and would encourage anyone entering this dying industry to consider joining his studio, it might give you a fighting chance. I often talk about how arts institutions have clearly shown an inability to change with the times. This has led to a curious phenomenon; we can all agree that the industry has cancer…but the institutions are trying to treat their mortal disease with essential oils instead of chemo-therapy. In their plight to find out what content is relevant they have lost track of the fact that this is a zero-sum game. As Steve well puts it emotion is ALWAYS relevant. Wagner will always be relevant, our mistake is to think that Wagner depends on the Metropolitan Opera to survive…it is the institutions that are spelling out their demise, not the content. Few people I know are as articulate as Steve about the trends we see as normal in classical music today, but which are actually a disruption from the nature of the art form from the 1500s until the beginning of the 1900s. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/artssalon/support
