For the final episode of our three-part Durkin family trilogy, I'm sitting down with my youngest child, McKenna Durkin, just before she leaves home to begin a brand-new chapter at High Point University (NC). This conversation is special—not only because I get to hear directly from McKenna about her dreams, goals, fears, and excitement for college and Division I lacrosse, but because we also get to flip the script and let her interview me. We talk about the value of hard work, discipline, mindset, controlling the controllables, limiting distractions, the power of networking, and what it really means to believe in yourself when you're stepping into something bigger than anything you've experienced before. As a Dad, this episode is a reminder that raising kids is ultimately about preparing them to spread their wings, chase their dreams, and become who they were created to be. In This Episode, You'll Hear: McKenna's move to High Point University and why she's so excited for this next chapter. What it takes to prepare for the next level of Division I lacrosse—and why "controlling the controllables" matters. The training, recovery, nutrition, sleep, and discipline McKenna has prioritized this summer. Why your environment matters and how the people and places around you can shape who you become. McKenna's approach to nutrition, including whole foods, protein, fruits, vegetables, and enjoying a healthy sweet treat. Why McKenna is choosing to study Exercise Science and her current dream of becoming a physician's assistant. The importance of using college as a time to explore, learn, and discover what you truly love to do. McKenna's biggest excitement—and biggest challenges—as she prepares to leave home and figure things out on her own. Her dreams for the future, including building a career she loves and someday having a lake house. Why some of the best family memories aren't the big trips, but the ordinary moments spent together. The Durkin family's special connection to Whitefish, Montana, and the importance of unplugging, slowing down, and creating quality family time. McKenna flipping the script and asking me some powerful questions—including the one lesson he hopes she has learned from watching me. Why hard work, grit, discipline, and believing in yourself are essential to reaching your goals. How to handle self-doubt when you're surrounded by people who are talented, accomplished, and competing at a high level. The power of focusing on the process instead of putting pressure on yourself to achieve a specific result. Todd's perspective on raising a daughter and the unique bond, love, pride, and protection that comes with being a dad to a girl. Why limiting distractions—especially social media—is critical when you're trying to accomplish something meaningful. The incredible power of networking and why "your network is your net worth." Todd's advice for McKenna as she heads off to college: come home, stay connected, keep getting better, and enjoy the process. A powerful reminder from Proverbs 22 about training a child in the way they should go—and then giving them the freedom to grow and spread their wings. There's something incredibly powerful about watching your kids grow up, develop their own dreams, and step into a future you know you can't completely control. McKenna is about to leave the nest, and while there's certainly some emotion that comes with that, there's also an incredible amount of pride and excitement. My job as a father has never been to create a life for my kids—it's been to equip them with the values, discipline, faith, work ethic, and confidence to go create their own. McKenna, I am so proud of you. Go chase the dream. Go compete. Go learn. Go build relationships. Go get better every single day. And most importantly, enjoy the PROCESS of becoming the woman you're meant to be. The next chapter is just beginning—and I can't wait to watch you spread your wings and create your IMPACT. What a special month this has been thus far! Last week, you got to meet my oldest son, Luke. This week, I'm sitting down with my middle son, Brady Durkin, and I can't wait for you to hear this conversation. Brady is entering his senior year at High Point University (NC), pursuing his passion for media production, film, and storytelling. But this episode goes way beyond cameras, movies, and books. It's about purpose. It's about discipline. It's about creating something that matters. I's about learning to stay present while chasing big dreams. As Melanie and I prepare to become empty nesters, these conversations with my kids have become even more meaningful, and I pray they encourage you as much as they've inspired me. In true IMPACT SHOW podcast fashion, we flip the script halfway through the episode, and Brady turns the microphone around to interview me with some deep, thought-provoking questions. Let's just say...he definitely didn't go easy on his dad! In this episode, you'll hear: Why Brady believes stories have the power to change lives How and why he's pursuing a career in film production and creative storytelling The incredible experience of working behind the scenes on the upcoming Christmas film All That Glitters at Christmas Lessons learned from director Paul Joyner about servant leadership and caring for people The story behind Brady's first novel, Lesser, and what inspired him to write over 70,000 words while balancing college life Why consistency—not perfection—is the key to accomplishing big dreams The importance of staying present instead of constantly worrying about the future How discipline is built one day, one decision, and one small win at a time Brady's vision for graduate school, filmmaking, and creating stories that leave a lasting impact Our favorite family memories—from Disneyland to Europe—and why those moments matter more than ever Brady's honest questions for me about regrets, work-life balance, coaching, leadership, and dreaming big My advice for young leaders about networking, taking action, and putting your work out into the world before it's "perfect" Why your purpose is discovered by doing—not waiting One of the things I admire most about Brady is that he's never been afraid to walk his own path. He's a deep thinker, an incredible storyteller, and someone who genuinely wants to use his gifts to make people better. Whether it's through film, writing, or simply serving the people around him, I believe God has incredible things in store for him. As you listen today, I hope you're reminded that your dreams do matter—but so does today's work. Stay faithful to the process. Stay present. Keep showing up. And don't be afraid to create the thing that's been stirring in your heart. You never know how God will use it. If this episode encouraged you, would you please do me a favor? This month, I'm bringing my family onto the IMPACT SHOW Podcast and we're kicking it off with my oldest son, Luke Durkin. At 23 years old, Luke just completed his first year in law school at the University of South Carolina, after he had a successful 4-year career as a student-athlete at Davidson College (NC) and participated as an ROTC (Army) student. To say he is building a life rooted in discipline, faith, purpose, and hard work is an understatement. As we prepare to head to Canton, Ohio, this week for Drew Brees' NFL Hall of Fame induction, Luke and I sat down for one of the deeper conversations we've had in a long time. We talk about what it takes to stay disciplined, how adversity shapes your future, why being present matters more than chasing "what's next." We then turn the tables when Luke interviews me about IMPACT-X Performance, becoming an empty nester, and the lessons I'd give my 23-year-old self. Whether you're a parent, athlete, student, entrepreneur, or simply someone striving to become your best, I hope this conversation is going to encourage you, challenge you, and inspire you. In this episode, you'll hear: Why discipline—not motivation—is the foundation for long-term success. The biggest lessons Luke learned during his first year of law school. How football prepared him for life, leadership, and handling adversity. Why staying present is one of the greatest challenges in today's world. How jiu-jitsu has become a powerful mental reset and stress reliever for Luke. The importance of surrounding yourself with people who push you to grow. What setbacks in college football taught Luke about finding his true calling. Why your hardest seasons often become the greatest preparation for your future. A behind-the-scenes look at building IMPACT-X Performance from the ground up. The difference between recreating success and creating something even greater. My thoughts on becoming an empty nester and embracing life's next chapter. The advice I'd give every young person—and my 23-year-old self—about time, purpose, and living with intention. Why family, faith, and meaningful relationships will always matter more than achievement alone. This conversation reminded me that success isn't just measured by titles, careers, or accomplishments. It's measured by the person you're becoming along the way. Watching Luke grow into the man he is today has been one of the greatest blessings of my life and I hope this episode reminds you to embrace your own journey, stay present, keep showing up with discipline, and never lose sight of what matters most. Take a moment today to appreciate the people in your life, invest in the relationships that matter, and continue becoming the person God has called you to be. If this episode encourages you, please share it with a family member, colleague, co-worker, or friend who needs it. Last week was one I'll never forget. We had the privilege of hosting the New Orleans Saints here at IMPACT-X Performance in San Diego for an incredible week of training, recovery, fieldwork, and brotherhood. Watching these young men prepare for an NFL season reminded me of something that applies to every single one of us—whether you're an athlete, entrepreneur, coach, parent, leader, or simply someone committed to becoming your best…it takes meticulous effort, coaching, hard-work, attention to detail, and big aspirations and visions to attain your wildest dreams. So here's my question to you: What if the difference between where you are today and where you're meant to be isn't more talent...but a better mindset, greater discipline, even more attention to the little things, and having the right environment and the right coaching around you to help you attain your dreams? Here's the truth: Greatness isn't reserved just for the gifted. It's earned in the habits, the details, the preparation, and the mindset you bring every single day. So you gotta bring it! Without further ado, let's dive into what was an unforgettable week with the Saints last week. In this episode, you'll learn: Why there is always another level, no matter how successful or experienced you are. How your body language and engagement reveal your leadership before you ever say a word. Why attention to detail separates good from truly great—and how the little things build championship cultures. The critical role recovery plays in sustaining high performance, energy, and longevity and what are some of the top recovery protocols. Why you can only do so much physical work—and how visualization, preparation, and mental reps create elite performers. Why mindset matters more than ever and practical ways to "Get Your Mind Right" when life tries to knock you off course. How the habits of NFL athletes can directly impact your business, career, relationships, leadership, and everyday life. Why surrounding yourself with the right people can give you the "juice" you need to keep going when the battle gets hard. No matter what season you're in, I hope one of these lessons hits you exactly where you need it. Maybe it's a reminder to pay more attention to the details. Maybe it's prioritizing your recovery. Maybe it's simply choosing to show up with better energy. Or maybe it's hearing, once again, that your battle isn't happening to you—it's preparing you for the blessing that's on the other side. And if nothing else, I believe you're going to get some "juice" from this episode. So enjoy it! If today's episode encouraged you, inspired you, or challenged you to raise your standard, would you do me a favor? Please subscribe to the podcast, leave a 5-star review, and share this episode with someone who needs these lessons today. In this episode, we sit down with John Kippen, a master magician, author, and resilience coach who transformed a life-altering medical crisis into a global platform for healing. After a 2002 brain tumor diagnosis left him with permanent facial paralysis and single-sided deafness, John spent over a decade in isolation before finding his way back to the stage and himself.  John shares how he reclaimed his identity through the art of magic and storytelling, eventually performing at the world-renowned Magic Castle and delivering a powerful TED Talk. Join us for a deep dive into resilience, the power of intuition, and why your "differences" are actually your greatest strengths.  About John Kippen: John Kippen is an accomplished magician, author, and empowerment coach who transformed a life-altering 2002 brain tumor diagnosis into a source of profound strength. Despite facing 12 years of social isolation due to facial paralysis caused by his surgery, he rediscovered his passion for magic and storytelling, eventually realizing that his perceived "difference" was actually his greatest superpower. By integrating his medical journey into his performances, he earned prestigious recognition as a Master Magician at Hollywood's Magic Castle and London's Magic Circle. Today, Kippen leverages his unique perspective to coach others in overcoming adversity, guided by his core philosophies to "Feed your Heart with your Art" and embrace the idea that "Being Different is your Superpower". The Journey of Resilience • The Downward Spiral: John describes a "Dark Knight of the Soul" period where he withdrew from life for 12 years following his surgery.  • The Turning Point: A magic special on television reminded him of his lifelong passion and gave him the courage to step out of his home office.  • Owning the Difference: Rather than hiding his facial paralysis, John integrated it into his show, telling audiences his surgery allowed him to "visualize thoughts".  • Authenticity over Symmetry: Despite the opportunity to have corrective facial surgery, John chose to remain as he is, realizing that his authenticity is what connects him to others.  Actionable Insights "We are our own biggest limitations because we keep ourselves from moving forward."  • Tip-Toe Out of Your Comfort Zone: You don't have to leap; moving forward often starts with small, deliberate steps.  • Listen to Your Intuition: Developing intuition involves acting on "little inklings" to help others, which in turn builds self-confidence.  Resources Mentioned • Book: Playing the Hand You're Dealt by John Kippen.  • TED Talk: John's 12-minute presentation on resilience and magic.  • The Magic Castle: The exclusive Hollywood club where John rediscovered his performance art.  • Official Website: johnkippen.com.  Keywords: John Kippen, Resilience Coaching, Brain Tumor Survivor, Facial Paralysis, Magic Castle Magician, Overcoming Adversity, Men's Intuition, Alex Trebek, Jamie Lee Curtis, Playing the Hand You're Dealt, Storytelling, Motivational Speaker, Single-Sided Deafness Podcast Timestamps •  00:00 - The "Bear Hug" Hook: A surprise encounter with a surgical nurse from 21 years ago. •  00:58 - Introducing John Kippen: Meet the master magician, resilience coach, and author of Playing the Hand You're Dealt. •  03:12 - The Diagnosis: Living through the discovery of a golf-ball-sized brain tumor in 2002. •  04:39 - 14 Hours on the Table: The technical reality of brain surgery and its immediate aftermath. •  05:59 - The 12-Year Spiral: Navigating facial paralysis, isolation, and the "Dark Knight of the Soul." •  06:52 - Finding Magic Again: How a television special reignited a lifelong passion and led to the Magic Castle. •  08:02 - Turning Weakness into Superpowers: Why being different became John's greatest performance tool. •  13:41 - The Silent Side: Coping with total hearing loss and the loss of "stereo" sound. •  18:32 - Developing Intuition: Learning to listen to the "invisible benevolent forces" and signs of help. •  24:41 - TED Talk Mastery: Behind-the-scenes strategy for speaking in front of 900 people. •  28:02 - Audience Management: Using magic to disarm crowds and build instant rapport. •  38:21 - Performing for a Legend: A private moment of magic and gratitude with Alex Trebek. •  43:34 - The Book & The Wisdom: Exploring pearls of wisdom and digital QR codes in John's memoir. •  47:20 - 21-Year Synchronicity: The full story of meeting the nurse who monitored John's facial nerves. •  51:24 - Resilience Coaching: Why you should "tip-toe" out of your comfort zone. •  54:58 - The Jamie Lee Curtis Connection: A story of friendship and advocacy during facial recovery. •  58:30 - Empathy & Expression: The scientific connection between facial movement and emotional connection. •  01:09:00 - Feeding Your Art: Why authenticity is the only way to live your own dream.

I want to alert you, so you don’t miss out on expert analysis and insider perspectives from my guests who provide tips that can help you uplift the community, improve your financial planning, motivation, or advice on how to be a successful entrepreneur. Keep winning! Two-time Emmy and Three-time NAACP Image Award-winning, television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald interviewed Wendell Graham. A stroke survivor, entrepreneur, motivational speaker, and founder of Slight Edge Consulting, joins Rushion McDonald to share a deeply personal and powerful story of survival, resilience, and purpose-driven entrepreneurship. Graham recounts two life-altering experiences: Surviving a fatal Amtrak train crash in which the person who took his place died, causing years of survivor’s remorse. Suffering an anaphylactic shock and stroke in 2024, which temporarily robbed him of speech, memory, mobility, and independence. Rather than allowing these moments to define him negatively, Graham reframed them as assignments—calling him to live intentionally, help others overcome “the hump,” and use his lived experience as intellectual property to serve, coach, and motivate people through adversity, business challenges, fear, and self-doubt. The interview blends emotional storytelling with practical insights into personal growth, sales, mindset, recovery, faith, and entrepreneurship. Purpose of the Interview The interview aims to: Inspire listeners to persevere through trauma, loss, and setbacks. Demonstrate how adversity can become purpose and value, not limitation. Show how lived experience translates into income and impact, especially for entrepreneurs. Encourage patience during recovery, whether from health issues, career loss, or personal failure. Promote Slight Edge Consulting as a resource for individuals stuck at the “15%” holding them back. Key Takeaways 1. Survival Creates Responsibility After narrowly avoiding the Amtrak crash that killed 47 people, Graham vowed not to waste his life and to live with intention. Takeaway: Survival is not luck—it’s an assignment. 2. Trauma Is Real, but It Can Be Transformed Graham openly discusses survivor’s remorse, PTSD, fear, discouragement, and self-doubt—especially after his stroke. Takeaway: Healing is messy, slow, and honest—but possible. 3. Recovery Requires Patience With Yourself Following his stroke, Graham had to relearn how to speak, walk, and think clearly. Progress came through patience, humility, and repetition. Takeaway: Every recovery has its own timeline—don’t rush the process. 4. Money Is a Byproduct of Action and Value Graham explains that income flows from prior action, knowledge, and intellectual property—not the other way around. Takeaway: Focus on value first; money follows. 5. Most People Already Have 85% of What They Need Through Slight Edge Consulting, Graham helps clients identify and fix the missing 15%—mindset, confidence, access, skills, or strategy. Takeaway: You’re closer to success than you think. 6. Sales Is the Transfer of Feeling Sales isn’t pressure or manipulation—it’s enthusiasm, belief, and confidence communicated clearly. Takeaway: If you don’t believe in what you’re selling, no one else will. 7. Fear Grows When You Stand Still Standing at the “hump” makes it feel larger. Movement shrinks fear. Takeaway: Action reduces intimidation. 8. Give Yourself Permission to Be Great Too many people wait for validation, approval, or perfect timing that never comes. Takeaway: The cavalry is not coming—now is your time. Notable Quotes On surviving tragedy: “I made a vow that I was not going to be irresponsible with the time that I have left.” On the stroke and recovery: “Physically, it was like being locked inside of your body.” On honesty in healing: “We tell the success story, but what about the middle?” On patience: “We have to be patient with ourselves in any recovery process.” On mindset and entrepreneurship: “Money is only the byproduct of something.” On personal growth: “Most people have 85% of what they need—it’s the 15% that’s holding them back.” On sales: “Selling is nothing more than transferring feeling.” On fear and permission: “Give yourself permission to be great. The wrong business partner will cost you everything. Here's how to know who to trust. Most businesses fail not because of a bad idea, bad product, or bad timing. They fail because of bad PARTNERS. People who don't share your values. People who steal. People who see you as a paycheck instead of a partner. People who make "doggy bags" to take home instead of building the table with you. In this raw conversation, Eric Thomas, CJ Quinney, Karl Phillips, and Jemal King break down the brutal truth about business partnerships - what destroys them, - what makes them work, - Why starting small is the only path to building big, - And real proof this approach works (six-figure real estate checks, zero student debt, generational wealth from $50/paycheck). This is Part 2 of our two-part series. If you missed Part 1 (Episode 528), go watch the wife haircut debate now!
