Jalene is a preschool teacher, a nanny, and she owns a small soapmaking business. Jalene previously appeared on episode 350 almost two years ago, and she has been happily living the intermittent fasting lifestyle since the last time she came on the podcast. Her journey with intermittent fasting began in November of 2021. She describes her previous struggles with weight gain during menopause and how the COVID-19 pandemic affected her lifestyle and weight. Upon hearing a podcast with Laurie Lewis speaking about menopausal weight gain and how intermittent fasting helped her lose the weight, Jalene found hope and started immediately. The episode highlights her transformation and how intermittent fasting became the answer.Jalene's weight loss journey was not only about losing pounds but also about regaining her health, as she dealt with hormone issues and Hashimoto's. By incorporating a clean fast and prioritizing whole foods, Jalene found significant improvements in both her physical and mental health.Through it all, Jalene recounts her journey towards finding balance and control over her lifestyle. A 4 to 5-hour eating window and activities such as moving around actively with preschool children are part of her routine. She emphasizes the importance of finding a personalized approach that works for one's unique body and lifestyle. Jalene's experience is a testament to the power of listening to your body and adapting as necessary, whether through tweaking fasting schedules or incorporating different types of foods and activities that fit in with your individual needs. As a final piece of advice, Jalene encourages listeners, especially those new to intermittent fasting, to take pictures and measurements from the start, as it is a great way to track progress beyond the scale. She has learned to focus on how she feels rather than the number on the scale, reminding everyone of the importance of living life to the fullest and embracing the journey with intermittent fasting as a sustainable lifestyle change.Get Gin's books at: https://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html. We welcome our client Jalene who shares her experience with fitness as a firefighter and paramedic, doing fire fit, along side struggles with serial dieting and the desire to "be smaller". She shares how she loves being strong and how strength has helped battle some of the conflicting goals and mindsets.
Jalene Ellis Weigand is a 53-year year old wife, preschool teacher, nanny, life coach, owner of a small natural body product company and a mom of many rescued animals. To keep herself in shape over the years, she tried all the fad diets and popular exercise programs. After so many years of drastic calorie restrictions and adrenal fatigue from exercises, she found herself no longer able to maintain a healthy body. After experiencing the hardships of 2020, and then going through menopause...she found herself living in a body she didn't even recognizes anymore. She was in complete denial of the amount of weight she had gained by hiding in stretchy yoga pants and the forgiving fabric of maxi skirt. After seeing some pictures of herself posted on social media, she could no longer hide and decided it was time for her to find her way back to health. She hadn't stepped on a scale in years and decided it was time to take a look. She was surprised to see a 35 pound gain since the last time she had weighed, which felt like a lot on her 5'3 size body. It definitely was time to find some answers she decided. After getting no answers from her primary physician, she did a deep dive into the holistic and integrative health care system. She found a team of women who were able to find the root cause of her weight gain, sluggish metabolism, and low energy. She was working with a local obgyn who had a podcast on women's health, this podcast had a guest, Laurie Lewis, who is an intermittent fasting leader. That day Jalene started her intermittent fasting journey. She found Gin Stephens, Dr. Jason Fung, and Graeme Currie. I can't remember when I was not focused on my body image. Growing up in Southern California in the 80s as a teenager, imagine was everything. We were bombarded by MTV videos with pictures of beautiful skinny models living life to the extreme yet maintaining a perfect body. I developed very young and was constantly reminded that I was a curvy girl. After having some weight issues as an adolescent, going through puberty, and having my two best girlfriends move away, I can clearly remember the day I discovered I could use food as comfort. I was eating a bag of Doritos while watching TV and felt how the food immediately gave me a sense of relief and a numbing feeling. So, I ate and ate and became chubby. But once I started High School, I felt the pressure of Hollywood nearby, the influence of MTV, and I became a bit boy crazy, so I reeled in the eating and was able to maintain a smaller size; what I kept a secret was I was really binge eating and purging all through high school and into my early 20's. After a very emotional break-up with my high school boyfriend, I reached my all-time lowest weight. I barely ate anything, and my eating disorder was out of control. The sad thing was nobody even noticed because our toxic society at the time encouraged us to be thin. Being thin was also considered to be desired in my family. Fat people were viewed as being out of control and not disciplined. I do not blame my family or have any negative feelings regarding my childhood. My parents were doing their best and passing on their upbringing. I started clean fasting in November 2021 and have fasted every day since. I lost the first 20 pounds in the first few months doing a 16/8 approach but then had to do deep dives to find the root causes of my continued health issues. I have fired my primary doctor and found a very helpful endocrinologist who helped me discover that I had zero hormones, had thyroid antibodies and had already gone through menopause. My bloodwork in the previous years was explained to me as “normal,” but what wasn't described was the numbers were typical for a post-menopausal woman. I had no idea because, in my early forties, I had an ablation surgery that stopped my cycles yet allowed me to have hormones. I had no tell-tell signs of menopause except the weight gain and a feeling of complete despair. So, between fasting and starting HRT, I have successfully lost all my weight gain, and I'm now just living my lifestyle without fear of gaining it back. I'm incredibly grateful to all those who have supported me on this journey. From all the supportive medical professionals to the people like me who successfully found their way back to health and are now sharing their stories to inspire others, I thank you! Students today face a barrage of stressors that impact every corner of their lives, from academic and social stress to family dynamics and personal trauma. The added layers of non-inclusive school environments, along with the unique challenges of immigrant and first-generation students, only contribute to students' stress and anxiety. In their new book, Education Across Borders, educators and co-authors Patrick Sylvain, Jalene Tamerat, and Marie Lily Cerat contended that the practices and values in the U.S. educational system contribute to stress and put many children and families at a disadvantage — in particular, those with diversity in language, culture, and socioeconomic status. With a focus on Haitian and Dominican students in the U.S., the authors drew on their experiences to address racial inequities in the classroom and shared strategies that can create an inclusive classroom environment. Together, they explored how language policies and social justice intersect, how educators can use culturally-relevant teaching to enrich curriculum, and how teachers can support the needs of immigrant and first-generation students in the classroom. Patrick Sylvain is a Haitian-American writer, essayist and poet, and instructor of Haitian language and culture at Brown University's Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. He has been published in several anthologies, magazines, and reviews, including African American Review, Agni, American Poetry Review, Callaloo, Crab Orchard Review, Haitian Times, and Ploughshares. Jalene Tamerat is a leader in K–12 education whose work focuses on the preparation of teachers who are able to respond to the instructional and civic needs of diverse urban youth. She began her career in education in 2003 as a classroom teacher in the Boston Public Schools and has most recently served as the dean of a Boston-area residency and master's program for aspiring teachers. Marie Lily Cerat is Associate Director of the CUNY Haitian Studies Institute at Brooklyn College and teaches with Africana Studies Department. Prior to her career in higher education, Dr. Cerat served as a Bilingual Haitian Creole educator with the New York City Department of Education and a Resource Specialist with the Haitian Bilingual/ESL Technical Assistance Center (HABETAC) of the New York State Education Department Office of Bilingual Education. She is the co-founder of Haitian Women for Haitian Refugees, which was established in 1992 to provide ESL and adult literacy instruction to Haitian immigrants and refugees. Danielle McKoy is a passionate activist in the national prison reform and racial school integration movements, as well as a lifelong educator. From battling homelessness to excelling at Princeton University, she leverages her exceptional personal story and expertise in advocacy, writing, and leadership development to lead equity movements on a local, national, and global scale. She is a cofounder of New York City's inaugural Alliance for School Integration & Desegregation. Bad boys: They make you laugh, they make you cry, they make you crazy, but you can't get enough. Women say they want a good man, but often the nice guy is banished to the friend zone while the jerk gets the attention. Why do good girls love bad boys?? Joining the show to shed light on the subject are two of Hollywood's finest, actor/writer/director Gary Anthony Sturgis and guest co-host Jalene Mack. Gary played notorius bad boy characters in Tyler Perry's biggest hit films, "Diary of A Mad Black Woman" and "Daddy's Little Girls". He also co-starred opposite Terrence Howard in "Pride", as the charming yet sinister pimp/drug dealer Franklin Washington. Jalene is a top entertainment attorney, with an extensive celebrity client roster. She also manages to balance roles as a writer/actress/producer/wife and mother of two. Jalene is the Founder/Artistic Director of Mack Performing Arts Collective (MPAC), a performing arts nonprofit. Her recent project is co-writer and cast member of the comedy movie "The Great Divide" currently running on BET. Have you been choosing the bad boy claiming to want a good man? You won't want to miss this show! To submit show ideas, comment, or be considered as a featured guest, email julia@divanyoung.com.
