Ama Wray – Performance Architect Dr. S. Ama Wray, TEDx Speaker, has been performing, teaching and choreographing across 3 continents for over 30 years, performing and touring with London Contemporary Dance Theater and Rambert Dance Company across the UK, USA and Europe. As founder and Artistic Director of JazzXchange Music and Dance Company she was Artist-in-Residence at The Royal Opera House and Southbank Center, UK. Improvisation, often seen as the dominion of jazz music is also synonymous with creativity and in 2021, she has launched a new program to bring this insight into the lives of everyday people through a body mind practice called JiM™ - Joy in Motion. This work emerges out a methodology she created known as Embodiology®. It originates from a study of improvisation identified within West African performance practices through which six principles were identified and iteratively tested in western performance contexts to attain their performance efficacy. Committed to recognizing these origins her organization gives royalties back to the rural community with whom she studies Ewe dance and music. These principles are now being translated and applied to illuminate different areas of human communication, across fields such as medical humanities, music, leadership, child development and somatic coaching. Recent publications include chapters in British Dance, Black Routes and The Oxford Handbook of Improvisation. This virtual iteration, developed during this COVID-19 pandemic, led her to provide services to the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute, at the University of California Irvine. A former National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts Fellow (NESTA), a UK version of the McArthur Awards, she began her exploration into performance and technology through a concept known as Texterritory produced by Future Physical. These digital terrains continue to be explored through AI 4 Afrika, an initiative she co-founded with choreographers, data scientists, artists, scholars, and entrepreneurs in 2020. Alongside artistic practice she continues her intellectual pursuits, receiving the African Diaspora Emerging Scholar Award from the Comparative International Education Society in 2018. As a public intellectual she has been an invited speaker for the United Nations, Dance/USA, Princeton University, Temple University, University of Wisconsin-Madison; Atlantic Center of the Arts, Florida and New Waves! Join Tracy Blom in this one-of-a-kind interview with Victoria Morgan, Artistic Director of the Cincinnati Ballet. Here they discuss the various ways that ballet transforms the soul, creates a place of peace, and instills valuable lessons. Website: https://cballet.org/staff/victoria-morgan/ VICTORIA MORGAN THE SUE & BILL FRIEDLANDER ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Sponsor: Barbara & Larry Kellar Over the past 23 years, Cincinnati Ballet has experienced tremendous growth and critical success under the leadership of Victoria Morgan. Today she is one of only four female Artistic Directors of U.S. ballet companies with an annual operating budget of $10 million or more. In 2008, Morgan took on the additional role of executive leader, serving as both the Artistic Director and CEO of Cincinnati Ballet. Under her leadership, after many years of growing deficits, the Company stabilized, built an $13 million endowment, a $1.5 million operating reserve, and created major artistic productions that redefined the caliber of repertoire for Cincinnati Ballet. Morgan’s vision to lead Cincinnati Ballet into a vibrant and confident future is famed by the Company’s tour to the Joyce Theater in New York and the tour to the Kennedy Center in D.C. During her tenure at Cincinnati Ballet, Morgan choreographed numerous one-act and full-length ballets. Her most widely acclaimed works include the world premieres of King Arthur’s Camelot in 2014 and the new Nutcracker in 2011. Her newly choreographed Cinderella premiered in February 2016. Prior to coming to Cincinnati Ballet, Morgan was resident choreographer for the San Francisco Opera for nearly a decade. She was a principal dancer for San Francisco Ballet (1978–1987) and Ballet West (1969–1978). She performed lead roles for television and film, and her choreography was featured in the PBS documentary The Creation of O.M.O. She served on the boards of Dance/USA, Dance Magazine, and the NEA evaluation panel. She has been presiding judge for the New York International Ballet Competition, the Benois de la Danse Awards Gala in Russia, and The Valentina Kozlova IBC this past summer. Morgan graduated Magna Cum Laude with an M.F.A. from University of Utah and was recognized as a Distinguished Alumna in 2009. She was honored as a YWCA Career Woman of Achievement in 2009, received recognition from Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber’s WE Celebrate Women’s Business Awards, and served as a member of Leadership Cincinnati USA Class 33. In this episode, Jerron Herman shares his story of defying the odds. Born with cerebral palsy, he was told he would never be able to walk, eat or live on his own. Fast forward to now being a strong advocate for disabled athletes and performers, Jerron speaks of his experiences, dreams and hope for the future. ---Jerron Herman is an interdisciplinary artist creating through dance, text, and visual storytelling. He's based in New York City. Jerron was born and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area where he began his career pursuing performance and playwriting. In 2009 he moved to New York City to study Dramatic Writing at the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. Continuing his dream of crafting stories to be performed, he then studied Media, Culture and the Arts, with an emphasis in Art History and Playwriting at The King's College where he graduated in 2013. While in school he was "discovered" by a choreographer who led him to audition for Heidi Latsky, quickly becoming a key member of her company, Heidi Latsky Dance. Jerron has performed at venues like Lincoln Center and The Whitney Museum of Art, resulting in the New York Times calling him, “the inexhaustible Mr. Herman.” As a strong advocate for disabled athletes and performers, he has been a featured model for both Tommy Hilfiger and Nike. His performances have begun to shed light on an often overlooked niche of performance. He currently sits on the Board of Trustees at Dance/USA and is a proud member of The Disabled List and WITH, brain children of innovative thought leader, Liz Jackson. As a writer, Jerron was a finalist for the inaugural Lark Play Development Lab/Apothetae Playwriting Fellowship. He was recently nominated for the prestigious United States Artists Fellowship in Dance.---Find out more on https://jerronherman.com/ We would love for you to subscribe to our podcast and share it with others. To find out more visit: https://globaldancenetwork.com/Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/globaldancenetworkFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/globaldancenetwork/

This week is a bit different: the podcast is divided into two parts with one subject-- Festivals. We begin by taking a broad look at festivals, their place in the cultural landscape, and their adjustments to the shut-downs caused by the pandemic. Our guide to this is Brandon Gryde our new director of Presenting and Multidisciplinary Works. Having come from Opera America and Dance USA, he's extremely knowledgeable about the many types of festivals and their various responses to the uncertainty caused by Covid 19. In part 2, we look at single festival—the New York Opera Fest which is hosted by New York Opera Alliance a community-based consortium of independent opera companies and producers. Fairly early on, New York Opera Fest moved their eight week festival online and reinvented itself as New York Virtual Opera Fest. Founding director of NY Opera Fest and co-founder of NY Opera Alliance Peter Szep explains the transformation of the five-year old festival and the range of work the festival is offering (including a discussion of Heartbeat Opera's incandescent virtual performance of “ Make Our Garden Grow” featuring over 30 Heartbeat alumni including singers, dancers, instrumentalists, and a gardener.) And because it's impossible to talk about an opera festival without talking about the innovative work being done by independent opera companies in NY, (and there are over 80 companies in NY!), you'll hear about the exciting music that continues to be created!

I challenge students and peers – and now you – to drop the easy, untrue notion that the arts are intrinsically valuable. For if we cannot define and claim our value, service, and impact, no one else will. Jennifer Edwards is a facilitator, writer, choreographer, educator, and organizational development specialist. She has been called upon, as a speaker / facilitator, by organizations including Americans for the Arts, Emerging Women, Columbia University Medical Center, the Juilliard School, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and Encore Careers. A Founding Partner of The Lasky Symposium (http://www.laskysymposium.org/) , and several strategic thinking groups. Some of the artifacts of her creative work include an iPhone App, called ‘Grounded,’ a short dance film series by the same name, and an award-winning spoken word album, titled ‘exposed.’ Additionally, her writing can be found on The Huffington Post, blogs of Dance /USA, Americans for the Arts, in The National Museum of Women, and in feminist zines, and chapbooks. Her choreography has been shown in some atypical spaces like Martha Stewart’s Whole Living website, Governors Island, and the streets of Shanghai. She continues to build, with various communities, a collective story / data installation project titled, jened.com (http://www.jened.com/) . Gina Gibney's choreography always reminds me of what's most important to me about art: serious attention to craft and an equally serious concern about human connection and communication. Gina is a thoughtful spokesperson for the art of dance. I've always enjoyed our encounters and usually go away feeling a little more focused and motivated as a result. I hope you'll be similarly inspired by our discussion about her work, including her development of The Distance Between Us, which premiered at the Ailey Citicorp Theater in November 2007. This year, Gina’s company celebrates its 10th Anniversary as an all-female troupe. See below for updated information on Gibney’s projects. GUEST BIO Gina Gibney’s choreography has been widely presented and commissioned in the United States and abroad at such venues as Danspace Project, White Bird Dance, Yale Repertory Theater, The Duke on 42nd Street Theater, WORKS & PROCESS at the Guggenheim Museum and elsewhere. In response to her growing concern about the status of women in the professional dance world, she reorganized her company as an all-female ensemble in 1997. Since that time, she has created six evening-length works exploring the humanity and physicality of women. In 2000, she launched the Domestic Violence Project, a groundbreaking project that offers dance and creative expression to women who are survivors of domestic abuse. She is the founder of Studio 5-2, an officer of Danspace Project's Board of Directors, and a trustee of Dance/USA. Gibney graduated with honors and received an MFA in Dance from Case Western Reserve University. UPCOMING EVENTS Catch a sample of Gina Gibney’s work at the dancemOpolitan group show at Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater, March 14-15, 9:30 pm. For reservations, call 212-967-7555 or visit www.joespub.com. Celebrating its 10th anniversary as an all-female troupe, Gina Gibney Dance holds its annual Women at Work gala on June 2 at the Ailey Citigroup Theater. The gala will feature a mini-retrospective performance, including excerpts from Coming from Quiet (1998), Time Remaining (2002) and unbounded (2005), and a new work developed in collaboration with survivors of domestic violence. This program will be repeated for the public on June 5 (7:30pm) as part of the Tisch Summer Dance Residency Festival.
