Hiatus is one month old, and it's going to get a bit older. Sorry about that. But just to catch up, Cliff and I jump onto a live stream and chat about some changes coming to the show, some devices that will be coming to full reviews in the future, and we talk a bit about some of our tech pet peeves. It's a fun show and a little warm-up to coming back on full-time. Subscribe to the newsletter and get headlines delivered to your inbox! This is the season three finale of the Benefit of the Doud podcast, and we're closing things out with Beyond a Doud with Juan Carlos Bagnell. Juan's creator chat episodes were a sort of inspiration for the Beyond a Doud series. We wax philosophic about being a reviewer, what it actually takes to make a smartphone, and the momentum of content creation. The month of May had a lot of non-Cliff content so we were able to recap our top stories of the month in a nice return to the origin of the series. We started off recapping the Elon Musk Twitter saga and the OnePlus Nord N 20 featuring Myriam Joire, and Google I/O featuring Daniel Bader. Finally, we wrapped things up with StreamDeck talk with Giovanni Colantonio and Mitt Silverman. It was a packed month which made for a packed show. This week, we have two looks behind the curtain, closing out that series. First, we answer a very common question in the life of a reviewer. If you read the title, you'll know. Then, Ricky Villacrez comes on to tell us how he packs for a trade show. It's a great conversation filled with some neat gadgets. This week, Cliff and Adam are taking a look at the US phone market and more specifically why it is so terrible. Like, seriously, why are there no phones to buy in the US? Actually, that's not accurate, There are a lot of phones to buy in the US, but they're all made by Samsung and Apple. OnePlus and Moto also make some, but that's about it, and it's a little sad. This month, we're talking to Andy Boxall, technology writer and reviewer from Digital Trends who until just recently worked alongside me. We dive into what makes Andy tick, starting with his origin story. Andy just wanted to write and didn't much care what he wrote about. It turns out, writing about technology works out pretty well. Plus Andy is a Lego and Star Wars fan and we did into prequels and sequels and Lego building (featuring the Mandalorian Razor Crest) and office spaces dedicated to Lego. It's a show of unexpected and fun turns. Links to News of the week available at benefitofthedoud.com Subscribe to the newsletter and get headlines delivered to your inbox! This week, Adam talks to Daniel Bader, Editor-in-Chief of Android Police about Google I/O, the annual developer's conference for your friendly neighborhood billion-dollar search giant. There's a lot to cover - search, Pixels, watches, tablets, and more, and we're breaking it all down. Plus we have a spontaneous Tech Yeah item, the Technics EAH-AZ60 which are my default absolute go-to earbuds these days. They're not cheap, but they're pretty great. This month, Adam and Cliff recap the OnePlus 10 Pro podcast review and discuss OnePlus's place in the world of smartphones. Then we talked about Jason Howell and the benefits of live recording. As tribute to that talk, Adam did NOT edit this podcast at all except to add the intro and outro music. That's it. He's throwing caution to the wind. It's liberating and also terrifying. The OnePlus Nord N20 is the latest midrange phone to hit the US market, exclusive to T-Mobile no less. This phone makes a lot of compromises, but different compromises than its predecessors, making the Nord line even more confusing to follow. That's why I have Myriam Joire on to talk about the phone and all the different variants that have come before. How does the OnePlus Nord N20 stand up? You'll find out on the show! There was basically no other news this week except for Elon Musk buying Twitter for 44 billion dollars and tweeting out a number of changes that he'd like to bring to the platform. So Adam and Co-producer Cliff meet up for a very long conversation about the topic. No cut interviews this week! Plus we have a Tech Yeah item that's actually five items combined into one. Motorola returns to the flagship space with the Moto Edge+ 2022 and Cliff has our full review. The Moto Edge+ combines quality insides with not-so-quality outsides, a great camera, awesome software and solid battery life in a package that is priced right. Moto still struggles with typical issues like software updates, cheap build quality, and Verizon exclusivity (kinda) but overall we came away impressed. We also have a short Tech Yeah segment with the Lenovo Q24i monitor. This week, Adam is talking to Jason Howell from the TWiT network. Jason is the host of the All About Android podcast (among others) and there's one key difference between that show and this one - AAA is live. So I wanted to talk to Jason about those differences and how to embrace the faith in the process. This week, Adam is talking to Jason Howell from the TWiT network. This month, we're talking to friend of the show Brad Molen. Brad is a former journalist who turned to PR for a number of companies. Just before he appeared on the show he represented TCL. After the show, he moved to MediaTek so, at the time we spoke, he represented only Brad Molen, which is just how Brad Molen likes it. This month, Cliff and Adam continue the new format of discussing stories throughout the month that needed a bit more love. First, we discuss Ships of the Northern Fleet or #SOTNF, the show that never was. Then we took some time to talk about the OxygenOS and the OnePlus 10 Pro. Would you put your ID into your iPhone? E3 got canceled while we recorded and we talked about it in real-time. Finally, we wrapped it up with Apple sabotaging its own hardware and more! Adam's voice is trash this week, so there's a shortened news segment. For our top story, Cliff and Adam discuss the Lenovo Legion 5i gaming laptop. This is a real powerhouse of a laptop, but it's not perfect. There are a few peccadillos here and there, but overall this is pretty great. This week, Adam and Cliff experiment with a new format. Instead of focusing on top stories of the month, many of which Cliff already participated, we spend the first half of the show focusing on two news stories from the month that needed more love. The first is a fake company in London with dozens of employees around the world. The second is a new design in the world of VR.
