This week on the show we ask you who from the show you would swap lives with. We talk to our old friend, Russell Holly on the new iPhone, and GUESS WHAT! IT'S BACK!!!!!!!!! TIME MACHINE TRIVIA !
This morning on the show we have tech guru, Russell Holly. He explains the updates on the new iPhone 14 and... is it worth it?!
This week, Adam and Cliff experiment with a new format. Instead of focusing on top stories of the month, many of which Cliff already participated, we spend the first half of the show focusing on two news stories from the month that needed more love. The first is a fake company in London with dozens of employees around the world. The second is a new design in the world of VR. Then we checked in with Russell Holly on what he looks for in a potential employee and finally, we check in on OnePlus and how its image has changed and whether or not it's a good thing. Russell Holly is the Managing Editor at CNET. Before that, he was a manager at Future and he interviewed Adam to freelance there. So with all this experience managing people, Adam wanted to ask him what he looks for in a candidate. The answer may surprise you. Plus, Cliff and Adam talk about a connected tablet, the TCL Tab Pro 5G. This is a budget-friendly 5G tablet that's currently exclusive to Verizon. Cliff gives us his overall impressions of the tablet and whether or not he recommends it. This month was a busy month at the podcast. We started off with our official iPhone 13 Pro review, which is a great phone, but basically the same phone as last year. Next, we looked at the Soundcore Frames, and asked whether Soundcore had solved the problem I was worried about. Next up, we talked to Russell Holly from CNET about Meta and the Metaverse. Finally, we circled up with the owner and operator of Gamer's World for a look at the physically nerdy, as opposed to online nerddorm. This week, we're taking a look at the Metaverse, such as it is. Facebook/Meta has made a big deal about the metaverse, and it seems to be the only one. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, other plans are in place, and it's going to take a while to sort everything out. Plus, we've got a long-overdue look at the Swagtron Swagboard warrior Hoverboard, just in time for winter. Sorry about that. On this episode, we talk about announcements to expect at Google I/O 2021, massive corporate earnings, and a truckload of new devices. We also wonder what the world would be like if Apple's iMessage came to Android. Finally, we say goodbye to Russell Holly and Hayato Huseman as members of the team. Russell is moving on to become a Managing Editor for CNET, and Hayato will be joining the crew over at MKBHD's YouTube empire as a video producer. Maybe we can start calling him HHUHD? That’s according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman who’s just been making it rain rumors this week. MacBook, iMac, Mac Pro, iPhone, flippy iPhone, all of it.Mark says the focus for VR, will be on gaming, entertainment, and communication, but given Apple’s history with hardcore gaming and the complexity of the technologies involved, you gotta ask — will they ever come out? And if they do, will they even be worth buying? To help answer, I’ve got former VRHeads boss and tech analyst Russell Holly on the line.

Russell Holly joins Daniel and Jerry for a chat about Google's purchase of AR glasses company North. Dell's new Chromebooks with 10th Gen Intel processors could gain Steam support, which could help win the hearts and minds of gamers. Qualcomm's new Snapdragon Wear 4100 is on the way. The company says it could provide an 85% performance boost to Wear OS smartwatches, with 25% better battery life. The gang are skeptical but optimistic about these claims. The OnePlus Nord is now official. It's a strange name for an interesting phone that will sadly not be available in North America. That's right! We're back at it this week with a second episode of your favorite mobile tech podcast — in special video form! And it really helps to explain why our usual suspects were out when we did that post-Apple show on Wednesday... hint hint. Joshua, Jaime and a whole bunch of other people were at Qualcomm's big event in San Francisco early this week — before the Apple event — for the launch of the Snapdragon Wear 3100, the latest chipset that will power the next generation of Wear OS smartwatches. What goes into it? What will come out of it? Will it be worthwhile to pick up an Android Wear watch again... only if by a different name? Russell Holly, Alex Dobie, and Jerry Hildenbrand are here with tons of information to share about the new Snapdragon Wear 3100 chip and Wear OS. Even with the battery improvements being promised by Qualcomm, the world is not without some watch envy when it comes to Apple Watch Series 4. Apple may have had their moment in the spotlight this week, but there are still many Android devices yet to come in 2018. The team dig into what we know so far about the LG V40, OnePlus 6T, and the throughly spoiled Pixel 3. All that, and Russell raves about June. Daniel Bader, Andrew Martonik, and Russell Holly convene once again via a series of tubes to discuss lots of hot topics in Android news. First, Epic Games is bypassing the Google Play Store for the upcoming Android release of Fortnite — requiring users to side-load the game and pay for in-app purchases directly to Epic. Next, Android P finally has a name: Android 9 Pie! While not as catchy as 'petit four' or 'pumpkin spice latte', it's less controversial than the great 'New-git/New-gah' wars of 2016. Samsung Galaxy Note 9? Never heard of it. But the Galaxy Tab S4 is here; with high end specs, build quality, and a price tag to match. A full review is still forthcoming, but comparisons to iPad and Chromebooks are plentiful. In the home stretch, Moto Z3 is officially coming to Verizon on August 16th. We feature commentator Russell Holly, managing editor of Mobile Nations, who focuses first on the proposals for "Right to Repair" laws in a number of states, including, most recently, California. What about giving consumers the right to buy genuine OEM parts for their tech gear, such as iPhones, and have access to service manuals? Can Apple and other companies void your warranty because you decided to fix your gear yourself, buy gray market parts, and/or have the repairs done at a shop not authorized by the manufacturer? Gene and Russell also talk at length about Samsung's Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ smartphones, recently introduced, and how they might compare with the iPhone X. What about the cameras, and which model delivers the best pictures? Did Samsung improve the quality of its facial and iris recognition features? There' also talk about the HomePod, which has proven to be somewhat controversial when it comes to its audio signature, with some saying it's too bassy. You'll also hear from commentator/podcaster Peter Cohen, who also focuses on "Right to Repair" and the upsides and downsides. Peter offers his personal experiences as the employee of an authorized Apple dealer some years ago and how it influenced his opinion about whether Apple and other companies need to allow more repair freedom. There's also a brief discussion about the concept of states' rights and how it affects customers where such laws vary from state to state. The discussion also focuses on the HomePod and its possible value as a smart speaker. Both Gene and Peter explain, at length, why a HomePod is not on their shopping lists right now, and whether Apple could sell more copies if it loosened its dependence on Apple's ecosystem when it comes to being able to listen to your stuff.

We feature Jeff Gamet, Managing Editor for The Mac Observer. In addition to a brief pop culture segment where Gene schools Jeff on the correct pronunciation of the wacky DC Comics character, "Mister Mxyzptlk," the discussion focuses on the MacBook Pro and the controversy over the battery tests from Consumer Reports, in which Apple's notebooks were at first not recommended until retested. And what about all the great gadgets introduced at the CES in Las Vegas? According to Jeff, there were more products that appeared to be ready to sell, rather than to show off an idea that may never make it into production. You'll also hear from Russell Holly, managing editor of VRHeads. After a brief focus on smartphone sales, and whether the market can continue to grow quickly, the discussion moves to the upcoming Nintendo Switch gaming console. Nintendo is trying to get a leg up on the competition from Microsoft and Sony by including a small embedded tablet that can be used for gameplay on the road. You'll also hear about popular gadgets at the CES, but the main focus is Russell's special introduction to VR technology. Are those goggles poised to take over the consumer electronics market in a big way? What about shared experiences among more than a single player? Are there any downsides other than the relatively high price of admission for the best VR gear?
