In MobileViews Podcast 580, Jon Westfall and I discussed a bunch of new tech, starting with the Raspberry Pi 500+. I'm excited about this new keyboard computer because, unlike its predecessor, it features a mechanical keyboard and, most importantly, an NVMe SSD slot for faster performance, moving beyond the slow SD card. I still haven't figured out what I'd actually do with one, but the specs are impressive! I also shared my experience with the Amazon Alexa Plus early access, noting that my older Echo Dot and Echo Flex were surprisingly supported, though the new female default voice has some annoying vocal fry. I'm also looking forward to Google's experimental Google app for Windows, hoping it delivers the AI PC experience that Microsoft's Surface Pro 11 hasn't quite fulfilled. Finally, I touched on the rumor of Google merging Chrome OS and Android, a move that I hope combines the best of both platforms, especially for tablets. Jon Westfall brought up the topic of the things that have sparked "tech joy" for him over the past year. He is particularly excited about the continuing evolution of AR/VR glasses, mentioning Meta's new glasses and the potential for an Apple Vision "amateur." He sees these as a fantastic way to facilitate human communication, especially for those of us who struggle to remember names and details. Jon is also very enthusiastic about the Large Language Models (LLMs), specifically their use as a "junior assistant" for tasks like drafting his promotion portfolio at work and serving as a quick "junior developer" for software prototypes. This is a great way to handle tedious work! I seconded the excitement around AI by mentioning the fun I've had with Google AI Pro's photo and video tools on my Pixel 10 Pro. We then wrapped up with a mini-rant about a poorly designed Bluetooth scale and some interesting reading recommendations, including a LinkedIn article by Ed Margulies about fear of change when trying to be a change agent in the enterprise and another about Roblox and the skins market in modern gaming.
Fevzi Turkalp, the Gadget Detective, joins Jim Davis on BBC Radio London to bring you the latest tech news and reviews. This time; Gadget 1 is the Logitech Casa Pop-Up Desk. Comprising a wireless keyboard and separate trackpad in a folio form that unfolds to elevate the screen of your laptop. Ideal for those who spend a long time working on their laptop and want a more ergonomic working environment. Scoring 4.5 out of 5, more in the show. Gadget 2 is the TP-Link TL-WPA4221. This internet network extender utilises your home electrical wiring to bring you both ethernet and wireless connections to an area of your home lacking good coverage. Score 4 out of 5, Gadget 3 is the QDOS SnapStand Qi2 3-in-1 Wireless Charger. This 3 in 1 charging stand features Apple MagSafe and can charge a smartphone, wireless earbuds, and even smartwatches by plugging a charger such as a powerbank into it. It folds out flat for easy portability, is made from sturdy zinc alloy, and sports Qi2 charging. Scoring 3.5 stars out of 5, more in the show Gadget 4 is the Acasis TBU405 Pro M1. This external SSD enclosure is USB and Thunderbolt compatible for extremely fast data access up to 40Gbps and offers an affordable way to increase the storage capacity of your computer, simply pop the NVMe SSD of choice in the enclosure. Score is 4.5 out of 5 You can hear the Gadget Detective on BBC Radio London just after 1pm every other Thursday and can follow and contact him on X @gadgetdetective and BlueSky @GadgetDetective.com #Fevzi #Turkalp #Gadget #Detective #Tech #Technology #News #Reviews #Help #Advice #Jim #Davis #BBC #Radio #London #GadgetoftheWeek #Week #Logitech #Casa #Pop #Up #Desk #Folio #Keyboard #Trackpad #Wireless #Fold #Out #TP #Link #WPA4221 #Network #Extender #Home #Electric #Circuit #Ethernet #QDOS #SnapStand #3in1 #Wireless #Charging #Stand #MagSafe #Phone #Earbuds #Smartwatch #Acasis #405 #Pro #m1 #Thunderbolt #External #Enclosure #SSD #NVMe #Capacity #Increase #Fast

After listening with interest to your tales of tinkering with Linux, and as Windows was getting on my tits, I decided to give Linux a try. I used a piece of software on a USB called Ventoy. It allows you to put as many ISO files on a USB as you want without committing to any one operating system. I tried about 5 live Distros over the course of a week. It really is a tinkering dream. Distro-hopping is so addictive. It's like setting up a new phone then changing it again! I couldn't believe how advanced Linux has become. In the end I opted for Bazzite which is based on Fedora but geared towards gamers as I have a big Steam library. Every game just works as soon as downloaded. As Gareth said, there seems to be a decent software store with everything you need - and it all just works. Thanks guys for giving me a little nudge. Looking forward to your Linux special. They Actually Cost More to Run Comments from various members of our MeWe Group… Batteries are an environmental disaster waiting to happen - they are likely to need replacing ⅔ times during the life of the car. Emissions caused by the manufacturing process makes it worse for the planet. Is Hydrogen a better eco-solution? It's heavy and needs robust storage arrangements. Did we know that there's 20% VAT on Public Charging (but only 5% at home)? General opinion is that we're going the right way, but much work needed still. -------------------- Mike Shwartz on the Audio Pro Addon C5A Multiroom Smart Speaker Never mind your Marshalls & your Sonos speakers, this C5A from Audio Pro (Swedish design) takes the prize for audio quality. Take my word for it, I'm a BBC sound engineer! It has internet radio, Bluetooth & Alexa built-in - and they can be doubled-up as a stereo pair with the app or just a mono multi-room setup. They have 4 preset buttons for your favourite radio stations and phono & 3.5mm line inputs. WiFi or wired ethernet. The speaker is actually stereo for the tweeters only. Position it nicely in the room and the bass is unbelievable! Top-end is crisp too. Really Hi-Fidelity! The app has bass & treble controls if you need them. Very highly recommended. How many messages can Apache Kafka® process per second? At Honeycomb, it's easily over one million messages. In this episode, get a taste of how Honeycomb uses Kafka on massive scale. Liz Fong-Jones (Principal Developer Advocate, Honeycomb) explains how Honeycomb manages Kafka-based telemetry ingestion pipelines and scales Kafka clusters. And what is Honeycomb? Honeycomb is an observability platform that helps you visualize, analyze, and improve cloud application quality and performance. Their data volume has grown by a factor of 10 throughout the pandemic, while the total cost of ownership has only gone up by 20%. But how, you ask? As a developer advocate for site reliability engineering (SRE) and observability, Liz works alongside the platform engineering team on optimizing infrastructure for reliability and cost. Two years ago, the team was facing the prospect of growing from 20 Kafka brokers to 200 Kafka brokers as data volume increased. The challenge was to scale and shuffle data between the number of brokers while maintaining cost efficiency. The Honeycomb engineering team has experimented with using sc1 or st1 EBS hard disks to store the majority of longer-term archives and keep only the latest hours of data on NVMe instance storage. However, this approach to cost reduction was not ideal, which resulted in needing to keep data that is older than 24 hours on SSD. The team began to explore and adopt Zstandard compression to decrease bandwidth and disk size; however, the clusters were still struggling to keep up. When Confluent Platform 6.0 rolled out Tiered Storage, the team saw it as a feature to help them break away from being storage bound. Before bringing the feature into production, the team did a proof of concept, which helped them gain confidence as they watched Kafka tolerate broker death and reduce latencies in fetching historical data. Tiered Storage now shrinks their clusters significantly so that they can hold on to local NVMe SSD and the tiered data is only stored once on Amazon S3, rather than consuming SSD on all replicas. In combination with the AWS Im4gn instance, Tiered Storage allows the team to scale for long-term growth. Honeycomb also saved 87% on the cost per megabyte of Kafka throughput by optimizing their Kafka clusters.EPISODE LINKSTiered StorageIntroducing Confluent Platform 6.0Scaling Kafka at HoneycombWatch the video version of this podcastJoin the Confluent CommunityLearn more with Kafka tutorials, resources, and guides at Confluent DeveloperLive demo: Intro to Event-Driven Microservices with ConfluentUse PODCAST100 to get an additional $100 of free Confluent Cloud usage (details)
Bleujour unveiled a new PC that is sure to capture a rapid and steadily growing market: the traveling gamer. To be specific, the MOVE Ultimate gaming PC was specifically designed to be powerful, upgradable, and also portable! The MOVE Ultimate is built on Intel's brand new Modular Computing Systems platform, the Intel NUC Elements Extreme, and Bleujour was sure to keep compatibility with long form-factor graphics cards in mind. This PC is built to be mobile and part of that is possible due to being built on Intel's brand new Modular Computing Systems platform, the Intel NUC Elements Extreme. This allows the MOVE Ultimate to have powerful components, giving the consumer choice of said components, and fitting them all into a small form-factor chassis. This design choice also allows you to have a powerful gaming and streaming PC that doesn't take up too much space on your desk. We are becoming used to the idea of massive, powerful machines, stationary gaming machines but Bleujour is aiming to shake up those norms.DesignThe MOVE Ultimate's chassis was designed with a carry handle built right onto it. This along with being built small enough and light enough to be an easy carry-on for flights makes this the perfect choice for travelers. Streamers that like to stay on the move, military personnel that relocates frequently but loves to game, and tournament organizers that find themselves in different locations while needing their gaming rigs handy, this PC is built for you. Bleujour even added the option to have the handle built on with either a right-handed or left-handed orientation, but the handle is also optional entirely. You may also notice the beautiful etching along the sides of the chassis. Though these maze-like patterns are pleasing to look at, they are actually integrated into the PC's cooling system. Lots of research went into designing a cooling system for these powerful, hexagonal-shaped PCs and the maze-like wholes turned out to be the perfect choice for maximum airflow. What's in the box?M.2 NVMe SSD, DDR4 up to 64Gb, 9th and 11th Generation Intel Core processors, Nvidia GeForce RTX or AMD Radeon RX graphics card compatibility, (2) Thunderbolt 3 ports (40 Gbit/s speeds), Wi-Fi 6, and Dual Lan capability.Price and availability?Prices vary widely, for reasons that may be obvious. The components you choose will change the price of the PC but with a 9th Gen i5 processor, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, an Intel UHD 630 graphics card and a 1TB M.2 SSD, you're going to spend about €1014,00 (about $1,125.64 USD) and they currently available for purchase from their website. Is that all?Bleujour also unveiled their line of work-grade PCs with some similar design philosophies. The Kubb Essentielle line is a small, cube-shaped PC meant to keep a small footprint on your desk, easy to move, simple to set up but still powerful enough to get the job done. These cubed workstations run on current generation i3, i5, and i7 processors, DDR 4 memory, Thunderbolt 3 ports, and more specs that you would come to expect in powerful laptops. These are your perfect PCs for the office, especially for things like meetings and presentations involving powerful development or creative software. Despite being designed for work, this line comes in a very wide variety of colors and they are even available in different textures, like chrome and wood! The Kubb Essentielle workstations are also currently available for purchase from their website.SummaryTo learn more about Bleujour and its lineup of computers, check out the company's website.Interview by Scott Ertz of F5 Live: Refreshing Technology.Sponsored by: Get $5 to protect your credit card information online with Privacy.
