The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. Today we are joined by Ted Kritsonis, who studies a variety of tech products. Ted is talking to us today about wearable health tech. In this episode, we cover the best wearable tech Ted has seen and discuss the pros and cons of some of the most popular smartwatches on the market. He dives into the accuracy of wearables and the best way for consumers to use the products. Ted also gives some great tips on choosing the best device for the purpose consumers seek to understand. Tune in today to learn how to utilize wearable tech for your lifestyle.IN THIS EPISODE:●   [4:51] How did Ted get into the tech field from journalism? ●   [7:28] Ted's favorite wearable tech products.  ●   [9:40] What's the best product for sleep tracking? ●   [12:10] Ted discusses the pros and cons of the major smartwatches on the market.  ●   [16:10] What to consider when buying a smartwatch for yourself or others. ●   [18:16] What should we know about WHOOP and Oura Smart Ring?●   [25:02] Ted discusses the accuracy of wearable devices. ●   [32:03] How does what you eat tie into wearables? ●   [34:10] How do the devices get our heart rate from the top of our wrists? ●   [36:52] How should we understand the context that devices share? ●   [40:50] Why should you take the data to the doctor to determine the next steps if something seems “wrong” on the wearable?●   [43:19] What does Ted think is next in this space?KEY TAKEAWAYS:●   Different watches have different benefits, so when shopping for a smartwatch, determine what you want it to do and then shop for the best watch with those capabilities. For example, for runners, Garmin is the best. ●   Accuracy is getting better, but the information isn't 100%. Use the information as insight instead of final information. Use it to compare how you've done across a span of time vs. reading too much into the information. If something seems off, take the data to a doctor to help you understand.●   Your lifestyle habits, including sleep, nutrition, and physical activity, all tie into your health. The watch cannot give you all the answers, especially regarding the food you consume.   QUOTES: “I always advise people to skip a year and go two or three years before you upgrade because then it'll feel like there's a bigger jump. There are times when a feature comes out that people can get excited about. Where I feel like there's confusion, is the expectation that one company, because it has a reputation for making good products, is really good at making this type of product, and I have to call out the apple watch for that. A lot of people look at the apple watch and think that's the best and end all of smartwatches when it is not. If you're a runner, I would recommend a Garmin over an apple watch any day.”  Ted Kritsonis“Treat the numbers that you see as an insightful perspective. Thank it from, like ok, maybe I'm in the ballpark, and if that ballpark is dangerous, that could be a cause for concern. There's ECGs now on certain smartwatches; if there's something that seems off about the way your heart is working, the watch isn't going to tell you why, but go to your doctor and say, hey doc, I'm seeing this number on my device pretty consistently, what do you make of it?.” Ted Kritsonis“I do suspect we will see more, especially on mental health. Mental health tracking, brain scanning, things on the cognitive side of health as opposed to just the physical activity.” Ted KritsonisRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramGUEST RESOURCES:Ted Kritsonis TwitterTed Kritsonis InstagramTednologic Podcast TwitterTednologic Podcast InstagramGUEST BIO:Ted Kritsonis has been a freelance journalist and photographer for 20 years, covering the tech industry. UK orders Meta to sell Giphy; Twitter tightens privacy rules; Microsoft shareholders ask for a report on sexual harassment; Xiaomi Note 11 5G launches

Facebook's parent company, Meta, has been ordered to sell Giphy by the UK's Competition and Markets Authority, BBC reports. Meta, until recently known as Facebook, bought the GIF-sharing search engine last year in a deal reportedly valued at $315 million. Meta planned to integrate Giphy's database of GIFs with Instagram, according to the BBC report. But the CMA ruled the purchase unfair to competing for social-media platforms. In May 2020, when Meta announced its acquisition of Giphy, it said 50 percent of the GIF search engine's traffic already came from Facebook platforms—half of that from Instagram. Giphy also provides GIFs to competitors such as TikTok, Snapchat and Twitter. Facebook's cryptocurrency head David Marcus is leaving the company, The Verge reports. The former PayPal executive joined Facebook in 2014 to run Messenger but eventually took over plans to launch a new cryptocurrency and wallet. These were known at the time as Libra and Calibra, respectively, but are now called Novi. “While there's still so much to do right on the heels of hitting an important milestone with Novi launching—and I remain as passionate as ever about the need for change in our payments and financial systems—my entrepreneurial DNA has been nudging me for too many mornings in a row to continue ignoring it,” Marcus said on his Facebook page and Twitter. Novi's VP of product Stephane Kasriel, previously an early PayPal employee and the CEO of Upwork, will take over the leadership. Twitter has banned users from sharing photos or videos of private individuals without their permission on its platform, the company said in a blogpost. Twitter is updating its existing private information policy and expanding its scope to include “private media.” Under its existing policy, publishing other people's private information, such as phone numbers, addresses, and IDs, is already not allowed on Twitter. This includes threatening to expose private information or incentivising others to do so. Microsoft has been asked by shareholders to publish a report on sexual harassment within the company, CNBC reports. Shareholders approved a proposal asking the company's board to publish a report on the effectiveness of its workplace sexual harassment policies in a rare vote of support for an activist initiative. Microsoft's board had recommended that shareholders vote against the proposal, but it received 77.97 percent of all votes, according to a regulatory filing. The decision comes a year and a half after Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates stepped down from his seat on the company's board. Reports at the time had said that Gates had tried to start a relationship with an employee in 2000—prompting a board investigation. The proposal asks for the details of investigations on executives—including Gates—as well as the number of cases the company has looked into and what was done about them. Xiaomi's Redmi Note 11T 5G Android smartphone has been launched in India. The phone was previously launched in China alongside two other new Redmi Note 11 series phones last month, Android Central reports. Xiaomi's latest budget 5G phone has a 6.6-inch LCD with a 90Hz refresh rate and a 240Hz touch sampling rate. It is equipped with MediaTek's 6nm Dimensity 810 chipset, paired with up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The phone is expected to go on sale in India from December 7 for a starting price of ₹16,999 (about $227), according to Android Central.

On this podcast I've interviewed a number of solo creators, folks working freelance for larger outlets or people hustling their own personal channels. This podcast, we're going to speak with someone managing one of the largest Android sites on the web. Daniel Bader from Android Central is someone I've only just recently started chatting with, but quickly fell into a friendly rapport. A skilled editorialist and a thoughtful podcast host, Daniel sat down to chat about his experiences getting into tech and tech reviewing, what it was like moving from a smaller outlet to a larger team, and some of the issues that even the bigger players are facing opposite algorithms and monetizing.
