Meanwhile, Samsung has released the Galaxy S23 FE, Galaxy Tab S9 FE/FE+ and Galaxy Buds, value-focused versions of its premium Galaxy devices. While it may be November, the impact of Techtober 2021 is still in full swing. This week, Tom's Hardware published its Alder Lake processor reviews, specifically the 12th Generation Core i5 12600K and 12900K processors. These new processors have taken Intel in a new direction, finally catching up with their long-time rivals - AMD. New features, new powers, and new peripherals are all part of this new generation.The FeaturesThe biggest change in the processor is the physical infrastructure. Intel has run on 14nm infrastructure for a long time, but the 12th Generation has finally moved to 10nm architecture. While this is technically the second Intel processor family to run on 10nm architecture, it is the first family for desktop use. This change means that more transistors can fit on the same amount of space.These new process, thanks in part to the new architecture, are showing some real power. In the gaming department, the Alder Lake processors nearly always exceed the performance if their AMD Ryzen counterparts. When it comes to productivity tasks, the two brands go back and forth depending on the task. But, despite these major improvements in performance against AMD, these new processors come in with a more AMD style price than an Intel price point.The PowersAlong with the architecture change comes a lot of new benefits. The biggest benefit is the addition of two different types of cores: Performance cores and Efficiency cores. The concept is an expansion on an old Atom processor idea - some cores are really powerful for high need tasks like gaming or video rendering, while others are low power for tasks like antivirus scans.Adding these dual purpose cores required more than just a re-architecture of the processor - it required some changes to the operating system. Microsoft made changes to Windows 10 and Windows 11 in order to implement task scheduling. This new Windows feature is what allows for routing of certain tasks to the portion of the processor most suited to handle the task.It's a shame that the processor itself is not capable of identifying what type of task it is receiving, but it makes sense that this level of information is not quite available at that level. Either way, it is a far more powerful version of the Atom infrastructure that was developed for netbooks in the early 2010s. Those processors suffered from multiple personalities - having two totally different modes, and switching between them depending on the load on the processor. This design was more for battery performance than overall performance.The PeripheralsThese new processors are the first to support DDR5 RAM. There are some issues, though, as using DDR5 requires special motherboards, as would be expected. But, there are still some compatibility concerns when it comes to this new RAM and individual motherboards.In addition, Alder Lake supports PCIe 5. While there is little that supports the new standard, you can know that your new machine will be able to support it when it gets popular. For now, it will also support PCIe 4, so the existing super fast SSDs will be compatible.

With the worst of Techtober behind us, and Black Friday on the horizon, the tech industry took a bit of a breather this week...well, except for one of the biggest tech companies on the planet completely re-branding, of course. Facebook is now Meta, and Meta is all about the metaverse. The social network isn't going anywhere, but the company is changing focus - and luckily we have VR expert Lewis on hand to explain why, what it means, and what on earth the metaverse actually is. Meanwhile, rumours have ramped up this week about the Galaxy S21 FE. Now tipped to launch at CES 2022 in January, we know a lot about the phone - and you can even go buy components for it online if you fancy.  Then Netflix finally followed through on its long-promised move into gaming. Right now Netflix subscribers can play five games on Android devices from within the Netflix app, at no extra charge, including two titles based on Stranger Things. The final week of Techtober still has plenty to offer, with two major phone launches and the review embargo lifting on Google's Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. First up, the Honor 50 has finally launched worldwide - with Google Mobile Services in tow. Dom has been testing the phone out for a week so is ready to let you know what he thinks of the new Honor mid-ranger - and a bit more about how it compares to the similar Huawei Nova 9. Meanwhile Sony's surprise phone turned out to be, well, surprising. The Xperia Pro-I is camera first, phone second, using the same 1-inch main sensor as some of Sony's actual cameras, and is capable of recording 4K video at 120fps without any frame loss. All that comes at a price though - a whopping $1,800 to be exact. Finally, after introducing the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro last week, Toddy and Chris are back to share their final thoughts and full reviews after testing the two phones for over a week. Techtober just won't stop, and this was one of the biggest weeks yet, with launches from Apple, Google, Huawei, and even a small stream from Samsung. We're most excited about the Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, which after months of teases were finally revealed in full. There weren't many surprises yet - except some aggressive pricing - but Toddy and Chris have the phones and are ready to give their first impressions ahead of our full reviews next week. The day before that Apple held its own event. Along with oddities like a Siri-only Apple Music plan, new HomePod Mini colours, and some new AirPods, the headline was the reveal of the new 14in and 16in MacBook Pros, complete with new Apple-designed M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. Finally, today Huawei has its own launch planned - just in time for us to discuss it on the show. We'd hoped to meet the European version of the Huawei P50, but word now is that instead this will be the launch of the Nova 9 - but will the big H have any other surprises up its sleeve?
