Is the legacy of 20th century Marxism one of victory or defeat? On a certain reading, the defeat of the international proletarian revolution has been the distinctive preoccupation of a variegated tradition of thought that has come to be known as Western Marxism. For critics, Western Marxism represents a turn away from historical materialism's proper focus on forces of production, class struggle, and the unity of theory and practice towards the superstructure of capitalist civilization: ideology, philosophy, aesthetics, and culture. At its best, however, Western Marxism offers the most theoretically advanced and intellectually honest reckoning with the historical defeat of the proletarian revolution in the advanced capitalist economies of Western Europe and the United States. In this episode, we are fortunate to host Ross Wolfe, author of a recent, timely piece on the legacy of Western Marxism in New International entitled “Neo-Stalinism & Philosophy: Domenico Losurdo's New School of Falsification.” Wolfe's three-part series offers a devastating critique of the Neo-Stalinist revival that has lately become popular among the online left and whose standard bearer is Italian Stalinist Domenico Losurdo. Focusing on Losurdo's Western Marxism: How it was Born, How it Died, How it can be Reborn, translated into English earlier this year, this episode attempts to salvage the enduring insights of the Western Marxist tradition from Losurdo's distortions and outright falsifications, with the aim of exposing the hollowness of Neo-Stalinist scholarship and politics. Il rozzo e disonesto Domenico è il custode di un piccolo cimitero di provincia, nel quale si alternano le vicende ed i racconti di vita dei trapassati che si aggirano fra le tombe alla notte e aspettano il momento dell'ascesa verso qualcosa di più grande.Cast corale molto ben in parte per questa commedia cinica e amara, che appartiene a un cinema italiano di mestiere, fatto con pochi soldi, ma tante idee e poesia.Assieme a Vittorio Gassman, Galeazzo Benti, Mariangela Melato, Sergio Rubini e Carol Alt, c'è anche un inatteso Malcolm McDowell che non sfigura assolutamente nella parte dell'amante distrutto (forse) dal dolore.Un film che parla di morte e fa riflettere, ma lo fa con una messa in scena ironica e sarcastica, raccontando le sfumature di un paese che era e che è ancora, ma che non ha più il coraggio di essere mostrato.

L'orizzonte internazionale si presenta oggi così drammatico e complesso da non avere altra soluzione da quella che ci ha indicato la Madonna a Fatima nel 1917: il Santo Rosario.La devozione al Rosario viene solitamente considerata nel suo aspetto di preghiera puramente individuale o al massimo familiare, ma ha anche una proiezione pubblica. La pratica del Rosario infatti non solo aiuta i singoli individui nei problemi e nelle difficoltà della loro vita, materiale e spirituale, ma ha una portata sociale che si estende alla vita dei popoli e delle nazioni. Per questo, ha ricordato il papa Leone XIII, “in tutti i secoli e in tutte le lotte la Chiesa ricorse a Maria, e ne ottenne sempre conforto e difesa” (Lettera Da molte parti, del 26 maggio 1903). Il Rosario, in tutti i secoli e in tutte le lotte, è stata l'arma per eccellenza per proteggere la Chiesa e la società cristiana.Ricordare il ruolo del Rosario nella storia della civiltà cristiana sarebbe molto lungo. Bisognerebbe partire dalla nascita del Rosario, nel XIII secolo, per iniziativa di san Domenico di Guzmàn e dei suoi frati domenicani, illustrando la loro vittoriosa predicazione contro l'eresia catara. Sarebbe necessario parlare del ruolo svolto dal Rosario nell' evangelizzazione e nella civilizzazione delle Americhe e di una parte dell'Asia e dell'Africa. E soprattutto non bisognerebbe dimenticare che la festa del Rosario fu stabilita da san Pio V per celebrare Maria col titolo di "Auxilium Christianorum", in ricordo della vittoria delle armate cristiane su quelle maomettane, avvenuta a Lepanto il 7 ottobre 1571.
