Few Tang!!! I ain't gone talk y'all heads off. Keysha McDougal, The Hip Hop Mom, of @s2tmedia38 Straight II Tape Podcast, inspired this episode. She posed a question online. She asked "What's the best Hip Hop opening line of all time?"...I don't know if we can tell what THE best opening line is (actually, I think I can), but I DO know we can tell you what's on OUR best opening line list. FEW TANG CLAN!!! Welcome to the Terrordome! Nobody on the planet can possibly hate AI more than Drake right now. And Biggie is likely throwing ice down from Heaven trying to melt down AI servers. Artificial Intelligence is still novelty for many. The music industry though?!?! You better believe they're taking it seriously. To say Ai technology is moving quickly is a gross understatement, as evidence of impending, irreparable impact, is beginning to show. It feels a bit like the Napster era on a steroids, HGH, cocaine, molly and angel dust cocktail; with some crack sprinkled on top. The conversation is far more informative than the description would lead you to believe. We hope you enjoy listening to the convo as much as we enjoyed having it. FEW TANG CLAN! Dreamville Fest came and went. Some people had fun. Some people had work to do. And of course, some people had opinions. I heard quite a few complaints from various, seemingly unconnected people. The two issues I heard mentioned most were the lack of NC artist on the Dreamville Fest stage, and the lack of NC artists signed to Dreamville. Let's just say I met those opinions with resistance. We talked about my passionate online convo on this episode. I wanna say so much that I'm not going to write anything. I think we get it all out on the show. Make room for the tag...#ConversateForAFew
Few Tang!!! We saw evidence of it during the VERZUZ between The Lox and Dipset. If you were at Dreamville Fest or watched it on Amazon, we saw evidence when comparing Lil Durk's appearance and J.I.D.'s performance...I could name myriad examples, but I'm talking about the difference between a mere recording artist and a real emcee. It's rare to find a "popular" artist that performs a show WITHOUT a backing track. These bums are rapping over the lyrics they're supposed to be reciting. I don't know about y'all, but I'm not paying to SEE you while listening to the same exact song the play on the radio. I'm paying to see you PERFORM the song. Sadly, that's a dying art. We think they are several reasons emceeing is fading. We realize there's a clear line of delineation between a recording artist and an emcee. And we used this conversation to unpack it all. We hope y'all enjoy this convo as much a we did. Dig in! But FIRST...Make room for the tag. #ConversateForAFew
Few Tang Clan! Our music, our art, our beloved Hip Hop is under attack. The machines are COMING! Matter of fact, they're HERE! Artificial Intelligence is mimicking our favorite artists. No samples, no REAL use of an artist's voice. However, songs are being created that sound just like Eminem, Jay-Z, Lil Uzi Vert, Kendrick Lamar...anyone you can think of really. What does this mean for the music industry? What is Library of Congress doing about copyright laws? How will all of this work? We get into it. Dig in! But FIRST! FEW TANG! We decided to compile a list of the top 3 emcees for every era! Essentially, we decided who was the Kendrick, J-Cole or Drake of every era. Honestly we personally refer to BIG, Jay and Nas but nonetheless lol. Here's how we did it...We started with the year 1979; the year of the first official Hip Hop release. For the sake of this conversation, we decided an era equals around 6 years. We DID make a couple exceptions, and made a couple eras only 3 years long, as music was changing so rapidly during that time. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. FEW TANG CLAN!!! Walk down almost any street, in any city in America (or the World honestly), and you'll see evidence of Hip Hop. Not only will you see evidence of its existence, you'll likely see some form of its lifeblood. Whether it's in someone's fashion, the way a person walks, the altered, dare I say, coded language spoken in non-secretive conversations; you'll see and hear Hip Hop. We've all seen the "old head" on the Harley blasting RAKIM or LLCOLJ. And we've seen 12 year olds lose their minds to 808's and hi hats VERY similar to 808 and hi hat sounds we lost our minds to in the 80's. And no. It's not the same. Nor should it be. However, it is Hip Hop. And Hip Hop is multi-generational. Let's discuss...Make room for the tag. #CoversateForAFew #CFAF Subscribe to the Conversate For A Few YouTube and hit the notification bell! FEW TANG!!! ChatGPT and AI are all the tech world is talking about right now. And if AI is ringing bells in tech, you can rest assured it will bring the noise to Hip Hop and the music industry next. What's going to happen when record labels get ahold of it? We know they already tried to give us an AI artist. Is art even "art" if created by artificial intelligence? How about AI-assisted art? The bigger question is, will y'all/we accept it? There's a ton to unpack, so make room for the tag...#ConversateForAFew Subscribe to the Conversate For A Few YouTube and hit the notification bell! Few Tang! What say you? Is crossing over in Hip Hop acceptable? What exactly does crossing over mean to you? Are crossing over and selling out synonymous? We think the answers to those questions will vary based on age and/or what era of Hip Hop you gained "musical morals". Some may say those morals are developed due to increased cynicism. We get into that, we answer those questions and so much more. Welcome to a thoughtful and in-depth conversation about Hip Hop. Few Tang...We're losing artists at an alarming rate. This era is proving to be the most dangerous time in the history of emceeing. When did things begin to get so bad? Who's fault is it? And ultimately, are record labels responsible for better protecting their investments? The question may seem simple. And the answer may seem obvious. But this topic spurred a deeper discussion than either of us imagined. We hope y'all enjoy this conversation as much as we enjoyed having it. Few Tang!!! We BACK! This week we're paying our respects to the legacy of DJ Drama and his legendary, Gangsta Grillz mixtape series. Nearly every artist you can think of either had, or wanted a Gangsta Grill in their catalog. Drama's mixtape series has launched and extended artists' careers. It has added validity to others. What's good Few Tang Clan! This week we're talking about something we're all experiencing. However, many of us may not know the foolishness we're witnessing is on purpose and done WITH purpose. Artists, companies and brands are all using outrage marketing to gain attention, in hopes for flipping that attention for profit. It goes; make a mess, make an apology, reap the benefits of exposure to your new audience while your core audience rallies behind you. Of course we take it back for historical reference and walk the convo up to current times. This talk was long overdue.... Last week the list for 2021 Nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame were announced. Among notable names were Jay-Z and Mary J. Blige. We heard a few differing opinions on the topic. Some instantly showed pride, others confusion. Some demanded Black Music have its own Hall of Fame. Other wondered whether We belong there. I think Allan and I made a strong, real-world argument as to why Black Musicians belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. We take time to analyze the plight of Hip Hop as it relates to Rock music historically. You KNOW we had to play Devil's Advocate on who belongs in and who doesn't. Many of us "vintage" or older listeners of Hip Hop show a true disdain for the melodic direction "emceeing" has gone in recent years. I'm not gonna say we LIKED it, but we have grown to appreciate what melodic emcees bring to the table. On this episode though, we try and undercover the history of melodic Hip Hop. We attempt to determine the Godfathers of the sub-genre. And we definitely try and NOT be hypocritical old heads. That part isn't so easy LOL. Few Tang Clan! What's good with y'all?!? Hopefully, y'all are still out there getting older; meaning you're consistently waking up on this side of the dirt. That's a good thing. It's the ONLY thing, to be honest. Hip Hop culture doesn't appear to think so. Getting older brings the proverbial pink slip in Hip Hop; the Ol Sandman Simms comes dancing towards you with that damn cane if you will. If that reference was over your head, or too old for you to catch, this episode is for you especially. Your youth is our opportunity (young and old alike) to quell ageism in Hip Hop. It may not mean much to you now. But once it catches up to you, it's too late. Treat this episode as if it's from the future. We're going back to tell people how to save Hip Hop from itself. If you got the Sandman Simms reference right away, we have vital instructions for you as well. Those in our age group have more sway than we give ourselves credit. It's time we start throwing our weight around. We can't make our genre/culture perfect, but we can damn sure make it better. We hope y'all enjoy listening to this conversation as much as we enjoyed having it. Make room for the tag...#ConversateForAFew #CFAF Please tell us what you think in the comments below. What's good Few Tang Clan?!? The question of the week is "Who Is Desiree Parker?". We got answers. But the more important question might be why does it even matter who she is? Would it matter who she is if this were any other genre of music? What does it say about Hip Hop if things like this matter? Tons and tons of important questions came from this topic. We hope you all enjoy listening to this conversation as much as we enjoyed having it. Make room for the tag...#ConversateForAFew #CFAF Please tell us what you think in the comments below. Who doesn't love a definitive list?!? On this episode we argue who's has the best reinvention in Hip Hop. But of course, to properly argue any point, you must set the parameters. So we established "The Articles of Reinvention" to create a baseline or rubric to follow. You know...Hip Hop nerd ish'. We PROMISE this will be the most eclectic Hip Hop list you ever seen. Ironically, we made the decision to talk reinventions a week before the announcement of MFDOOM's passing. Sadly, our timing was impeccable as DOOM formerly known as Zev Love X, easily had the most masterful reinvention Hip Hop as ever seen. Salute to MFDOOM for everything he contributed to the art, the genre, the culture. Rap in Peace King. We hope you all enjoy listening to this conversation as much as we enjoyed having it. Industry Rule #4080: Record Company people are shadyyyyyyyyyyyy! Ain't nothing changed since Q-Tip's proclamation. Coal miners have unions. Steel workers have unions. Airline pilots have unions. Actors and actresses have unions. PODCASTERS even have unions! Why not artists, producers and musicians? Heavy hitters such as Joe Budden, Lupe Fiasco and N.O.R.E. have broached the topic but we have found no evidence of movement toward bringing a Hip Hop Union to fruition. Spotify is under fire from unionization of podcasters. Seemingly, there hasn't been a peep from artist; definitely not an organized "peep". Why not? Now we DID undercover vital information that will benefit major label artists going forward. Our opinions are cool. But this info is the meat of this entire conversation. My mind is still blown by what Allan brought to the table on this one. We dropped links to every article read from and mentioned in the show below. https://www.sagaftra.org/does-sound-recordings-department-cover-instrumental-musicians https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/theres-a-musicians-union-many-musicians-are-unaware-or-unable-to-join-831574/amp/ https://www.globalpolicyjournal.com/blog/28/01/2015/rappers%E2%80%99-union https://www.afm.org/our-musicians/recording-digital-media/ https://www.unionofmusicians.org/justice-at-spotify Please tell us what you think in the comments below. What's good Few Tang Clan!?!? This is a special episode. Not only is it our 150th show, but it's also special because it's dedicated to our favorite new artist. I COULD'VE said our favorite new emcee. But Che Noir is more than an emcee! She's a producer as well. So emcee isn't a sufficient title for someone so talented. Che is an ARTIST. We get into Che's work, her team, and her region. We give our opinion on where Che might sit among other female emcees historically (which isn't even fair because she's WASHING most male emcees historically lol). Let's get this young lady her flowers. And do yourselves a favor. Go peep her catalog. You're welcome in advance. Too many murders. Too many indictments. Too much self-snitching. Too much ego. Too many horrible decisions. Obviously NOT enough good advice. The genre we love is suffering from all of these things. The element of danger I admittedly enjoy in my Hip Hop has gone too far. Many of you accepted things had gone too far long before now. Please forgive my willful ignorance. It seems to be the crime that used to pour from the streets into the music now flows (along with blood sadly) from the music into the streets. The phrase "The most dangerous career on the planet" has been swirling around Hip Hop lately. What's happening and why? Who's fault is this? Who's responsibility is it to fix? These are all topics we discuss on this episode. We came to a few very scary realizations too. Give a listen. Hopefully you'll have answers to a few of these questions so vital to the survival of the genre we all love so much. We also hope you enjoy listening to the conversation as much as we enjoyed having it. A Tribe Called Kast (ATCQ + OutKast) Murder Inc. (Jay-Z, DMX & Ja Rule) Child Rebel Soldier (Kanye, Pharrell & Lupe Fiasco) Theses are just a few super groups that were on the verge of rocking the world but never actually happened. This is like the fantasy football of Hip Hop. Imagine the world we could have/would have lived in if works from these projects made to fruition. Sadly, we can't do much more than imagine. We CAN talk about it! And talk we did. Make room for the tag...#ConversateForAFew --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/conversateforafew/support
What's good Few Tang Clan! Since the recording of this episode, HBO Max has removed its free stream of "On the Record"; Drew Dixon's story of sexual abuse in the music industry. Drew's abusers are from Hip Hop. They are revered and heralded as legends, godfathers and greats. I said all that to say, we would've posted a link to the free stream if it still existed. It doesn't so we posted this one instead... https://play.hbomax.com/feature/urn:hbo:feature:GXrw_sA07SZGXWQEAAADb (You can subscribe or just do what we all do lol) Watching this documentary prompted a conversation on the show that's long overdue. This conversation is long overdue for the culture at large. Who's job is it to call out the culture? Who's going to listen? Would we listen if women ask Hip Hop as a culture to change? Why haven't women asked Hip Hop as a culture to change? Have they and have we not listened? There's more than an episode's worth of topic here. So I'm sure we'll revisit it soon. But for now, let's get to it. What's good Few Tang Clan!?!? Aight! Most podcasts are trying make money off its audience. We admit. We'd like to make a little coin too. But this ep is all about making YOU, The Few Tang Clan, some bread. We got a stock tip y'all. Four words...Hipgnosis Songs Fund Limited. On this episode we get into the moves they've been making, and with who. We get into what their venture means for the music industry on a whole. And most importantly, we get into how we, and YOU might be able to make some money along with our favorite songwriters and producers. I promise you don't want to miss the info in this episode. What's good Few Tang Clan!?!?! Do you know what today is?!?! Sing it wit'me! It's our anniversary! It's been 3 years since we launched Conversate For A Few Hip Hop Podcast. And what better way to celebrate than to take it back to the beginning. 3 years ago, Allan gave me a call and 3 hours later, a show was born. If you've been an artist, unless you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth, you know "The Starving Artist" experience. Recent events [Russ' convo with Steve Stout coupled with the Migos label drama] have brought the idea back to us with perfect timing. What's good Few Tang Clan!?! How has the maturation of Hip Hop artists changed over the eras? Is the influx of so much new music forcing us to "Old Head out", and start yelling get off my lawn? Or do we recognize the advantages technology affords both artists and fans nowadays? We hope y'all enjoy this conversation as much as we enjoyed having it. What's good Few Tang Clan!?! We're back y'all. Hopefully we gave y'all enough time to catch up to the barrage of episodes we hit you with lol. Our apologies for such a long break between episodes. Technical difficulties, creative impairments (Jana is to blame for that one specifically), and plain enjoying the break a little bit; those are the reasons for our absence. Please forgive us. Now that we have that out of the way...Let's get down to business. We need Hip Hop to step up. Not just the emcees, but the culture. On this episode we stick to the music though. We dig into Hip Hop's responsibility to social justice. Historically, where does Hip Hop stand on matters of injustice. Has Hip Hop ever served its people properly? CAN Hip Hop serve its people properly? If so, how? Thank you for your patience. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we enjoyed having it. What’s good Few Tang Clan?!?! We brought Chris Charles back in to run through our favorite Hip Hop album covers of all time. We kinda used a draft format. We let our guest go first and with each answer, we give details about what makes the artwork our favorite. And yes…we know the title says 10 albums. Ignore that. We definitely talked about more than 10 joints. There are some gems about the origin or inspiration for some classics covers in here too. Preciate you Chris for coming though and choppin it up with us again. We hope y'all enjoy listening to this conversation as much as we enjoyed having it. What’s good Few Tang Clan?!?! Full disclosure: I, Jana, did not want to have this conversation. I won’t say my cohost Allan insisted lol. I will say Allan reminded me that we swore we wouldn’t talk about 6ix9ine (even after getting out of prison early), until he made a move. Well he’s moving. I KNEW this conversation was gonna piss me off lol. I didn’t know it would send us down an aluminum foil hat wearing, conspiracy theory induced, rabbit hole. And I definitely didn’t know we would end up waxing philosophical on the survival of Hip Hop culture. Ultimately, I’m happy Allan pushed for this episode. It was necessary. Just know I fought it LOL. What’s good Few Tang Clan?!?! Often, our first impression of an artist is based on photography. Whether an album cover, magazine spread, or nowadays, an Instagram pic, someone's photography is our introduction to an artist's look, attitude, lifestyle...I could go on but you get it. Today we're talking photography in Hip Hop. And there was no way we were having this discussion without our guest; the GOAT photographer, Chris Charles. Chris has shot Hip Hop legends, Jazz legends, as well as people you'll likely read about in future history books. We talked to Chris about everything #HipHopPhotography from each of our favorite album covers, to discussing some of the most legendary photographers in the game, to technology's impact on photography in Hip Hop, and more. I learned so much during this talk. Y'all ready to nerd out on #HipHop? Good; cause that's what we do round here! Again, thank you so much Chris, for chopping it up with us. What’s good Few Tang Clan?!?! I think loose usage of the word “Svengali” has softened its meaning. I always took the word to mean a person that takes the diamond in the rough, works musical and music industry “magic” to create a star. Little did I know the word is a name, and that name belonged to a pretty sinister character from "Tribly", the 1894 novel/musical. This new information helped us distinguish between the svengalis we love and respect, from the ones we should be weary of; the Big Bad Wolves of the music industry if you will. It helped us be able to discern when the word is being used “properly” or better yet, to what effect. Yeah we know...#HipHopNerd ish lol. Welcome to The Role of the Svengali in Hip Hop. What’s good Few Tang Clan!?!? This conversation has been a long time coming; TOO long. The term special guest doesn’t do this Man justice. We talked to Dallas “DBoy General” Leake y’all. If you know like I know, when you get a chance to talk to Dallas, it’s in your best interest to talk BUSINESS. Everybody wanna be a Boss. Dallas is one of the few people I’ve met who is inherently a Boss. But not for the benefit of himself. He’s always used his blessing to help others achieve their dreams; that includes me, Jana. I don’t know if I’ve ever officially said thank you…Well from the bottom of my heart, Thank You DBoy. God bless ya Life. Love you Boy. What’s good Few Tang Clan?!?! One of the reasons we do this show is we feel it’s our duty to leave behind intelligent conversations about Hip Hop. We also understand that educating our listeners comes with the territory. So today, we’re list 10 of the most unsung figures in Hip Hop. Hopefully, for some of you the names on our list will be new to you. For others, we hope to get a resounding “Hell yeah!” when you hear the name of someone you respect and see as unsung as well. So many people deserve to make this list we could do this show twice a week for a year and not scratch the surface. I’m happy we did this one. What’s good Few Tang Clan?!?! No description today; just a list of things we talked/argued about… Jay-Z v. Drake is a dumb idea. Is Jermaine Dupri’s disrespect for TrackMasters ridiculous? 12 songs Alchemist should play in a battle with anyone but Havoc. Hezekiah Walker v. John P Kee?!?!? Should @Verzuz battles be monetized? How will media change post-stay at home? Salute @hi_its_keysha, 1/4 of the #Straight2TapePodcast! Thanks for the Instagram Live convo the other day.
