The Large is a perfect example of the sort of figure we want to talk about on No Tags. She's been a savvy behind-the-scenes operator for over 15 years, coming of age in London's late ‘00s DIY clubbing era as a promoter, DJ, radio host and blogger. It was in the early part of the next decade, however, that she came into her own at Mixpak, the New York-based label that did more than any to connect the dots between the Caribbean, the UK and US in the 2010s. As label manager, Suze worked with Vybz Kartel, Murlo, Jubilee, Palmistry and more – but none made as seismic an impact as Popcaan, whose first two albums had Suze at the helm. Her crowning glory however, came in the summer of 2016 when Mixpak (and a weighty extended crew) triumphed in London's Wembley Arena at Red Bull's flagship Culture Clash event, to a global viewing audience of millions. As we find out in this episode, Suze was at the heart of that success, organising hundreds of exclusive dubplates and guest appearances to leverage their soundclash victory, including Spice, Popcaan, J Hus, Tony Matterhorn, Sneakbo, Kranium and Drake. We spoke to Suze about her decade in NYC, the mechanics of releasing music in 2024, the inside scoop on Culture Clash, dancehall's historical relationship with the US-UK press machine, the emergence of Latin America and Korea as global pop music forces, the difference between drunk crowds and ketamine crowds, and much, much more. Thanks for listening to No Tags.

This morning on The Marilyn Denis and Jamar show on CHUM 104.5, Ashley Greco sat in for Marilyn while she's on vacation. We tried something new today, ask you if you are willing to admit to doing it. Jamar shared his wild engagement story, but one listener out did him. Plus, would you $500,000 cash or lunch with your favourite celebrity, what song gets the dancehall to loose it, and What's Trending with Caitlin Green.

Gary Asquith - Renegade Soundwave & Rema Rema- in conversation with David Eastaugh Debuting on Rhythm King label with the "Kray Twins" single, their early records mixed together the sound of the then embryonic dance scene, hip-hop, dub, sampling and electro-industrial noise. Later singles such as "Biting My Nails" (a cover version of a song by Genevieve Waite, from her 1974 album, Romance is on the Rise, produced by her husband, John Phillips of The Mamas and the Papas) and "Probably a Robbery" eventually reaching number 38 in the UK Singles Chart in 1990, mostly due to the AA side "Ozone Breakdown", a popular dance track, which featured a sample from the film, The Warriors. A switch to Mute Records brought the release of the debut long-player Soundclash in 1989, swiftly followed by In Dub. The Japanese version of In Dub featured a second disc of the cuts, previously available only on their early 12" singles. At this point, Bonnie exited to pursue a solo career (citing musical differences), leaving Briottet and Asquith to continue as a duo. After two more albums, the group formally disbanded in 1995, leaving behind a legacy of four albums and 12 singles.
Vienna-born and Berlin-based DLV is not a blank slate in Europe's techno industry. He defines his music as a realm of sinister peak-time Techno. A strong focus on productions and his DJ career made him score an underground hit called “Rave Instructor“. This heavy dance-floor weapon achieved some big support coming from techno royalties such as Amelie Lens, Regal, and many more. Besides his longstanding residency at Grelle Forelle, he kept pushing his personal limits. As founder of Acid Techno Techno Club, a Vienna-based label and event series he started working as well behind the scenes and contributing to the techno industry. Soon he became a well-known and respected figure in the Austrian capital's Techno scene. The dedication to his work and passion for music, resulted to perform at Red Bull's Soundclash in Stuttgart back in 2019, followed by shows in Europe‘s infamous Techno capitals Berlin and Paris. With convincing performances, he could gain international attention for his projects. During the current pandemic situations, he focused on new productions and could score a release on Klangkünstler‘s OUTWORLD. With „Der Teufel (Gazometer 98 Mix)“ he once more gained international support by Kobosil, Amelie Lens, Dax J and many more pushing him to the top of the Beatport Hard Techno charts.
