Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for December 14, 2023 is: genial JEEN-yul adjective Someone described as genial is cheerful and pleasant; a thing described as genial suggests or expresses friendliness and cheer. // Omar was a most genial host, making sure to spend time with each and every one of the guests at the reception. // Though I knew no one at the conference, the genial atmosphere immediately put me at ease. See the entry > Examples: “There's a fresh way to revisit [John] Prine apart from the catalog of records he left behind. Five decades' worth of stories about and conversations with the artist have been collected by Holly Gleason in ‘Prine on Prine: Interviews and Encounters With John Prine'.... To know him is to love him, and to love and know Prine is to spend a lot of hours in his presence via Gleason's essential compendium, which finds his observational candor, fierce intelligence and genial warmth to be unwavering over a half-century of meeting the press.” — Chris Willman, Variety, 10 Oct. 2023 Did you know? Warm, cheerful, and pleasant? That's genial in a bottle, baby. Or at least (if such a declaration rubs you the wrong way) that's the most common sense of genial. You may also be familiar with its closely related meaning of “favorable to growth or comfort” as in “what a girl wants most on vacation is to recline in the genial sunshine.” Or perhaps you've heard genial used to describe someone or something displaying or marked by genius, as in “who among us doesn't appreciate genial insights embedded in a beautiful pop song”? After all, both genial and genius share an ancestor in the Latin word genius, meaning “a person's disposition or inclination.” There are also older, now-obsolete senses of genial. When it first entered English from the Latin adjective genialis (“connected with marriage”) it shared that word's matrimonial meaning. And at one time genial was also a synonym of native or inborn, describing things (such as musical talent) present or seemingly present in someone from birth.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 4, 2023 is: genius JEEN-yus noun A genius is a person who is exceptionally smart or talented. Genius also refers to great natural ability, or to a part of something that makes it unusually good or valuable. // She's a genius at riddles. // The sheer genius of their theory was not immediately recognized. // He's widely admired for his comedic genius. See the entry > Examples: “Jena at its peak might have boasted a higher concentration of genius than Renaissance Florence or ancient Athens.” — Adam Kirsch, The New Republic, 21 Oct. 2022 Did you know? Today, the word genius tends to carry cerebral connotations, rather than spiritual ones, but the word has its origin in ancient Roman religion, in which the genius (from Latin gignere, “to beget”) was originally a spirit who gave continuity to a family or clan over generations, and later the attendant spirit of a person or place. When genius first made its home in the English language in the 14th century it carried this “attendant spirit” meaning. Over time, the word developed the extended sense of “an identifying character or spirit,” a meaning inspired by the fact that part of a genius's role was to protect a person's moral character. Later genius came to refer to both remarkable talent or intelligence, and to someone who has such—genius developments, if you ask us.

That's what we're here to discuss. #PullUpAChair, press play, and leave your thoughts on the doc.

You'll also learn more about the ‘alt-right playbook' that Ye seems to be following, and the elements of it that can be seen in his behavior, before hearing how he and the alt-right have attempted to weaponize cancel culture, and why you may never want to use the term in a defensive response again.Key Points From This Episode:The story behind the controversy surrounding Ye. From rebuking Pres. Bush over Hurrican Katrina, to backing Pres. Trump, to mounting his own brief run for President, Ye (formerly Kanye West) has made himself a controversial, unavoidable part of American politics, music, culture, fashion, social media, and business for decades. Two of his oldest collaborators and friends, Coodie Simmons and Chike Ozah, explain their belief and fascination in the artist and billionaire entrepreneur Ye -- even amidst some disagreements over politics, values, and business -- as they unveil one of the most unusual, long-running documentaries ever made, Netflix's "jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy." The new film draws on hundreds of hours of previously unseen footage, 20 years in the making, which began when Simmons decided to devote years to filming a then-unknown music producer. In one of the most extensive, in-depth interviews about the project, Simmons and Ozah talk with MSNBC anchor and music obsessive Ari Melber about Ye; his relationship with them, other artists and his mother Donda - whom they knew well; the complex backstory of the project; the racial dynamics that Ye faced in the industry; their discussions about Drake narrating the film; how anyone can tap the lessons of passion and a "genius" mindset; and, on a lighter note, the way a young Ye's retainers figured into his early years. Ye is a complex artist and person who has proven controversial, maddening, gifted, and inspiring to so many people around the world. This bonus podcast explores some of the reasons for that, with people who have studied his life and work.
