In this episode of the Happy Whole You Podcast, Dr. Robert Melillo returns to explore ADHD, brain development, and why so many modern mental health challenges may stem from brain imbalances rather than fixed "chemical defects." Looking through an evolutionary and developmental lens, he explains how reduced movement, increased technology use, and left-brain–heavy lifestyles are reshaping our brains. Together with host Dr. Anna Marie Frank, they unpack left vs. right brain dominance, ADHD subtypes, postpartum depression, and why focusing on our weaknesses, not just our strengths, may be the key to long-term brain and mental health. "You're not broken. If anything, you are exceptional at something, and that gift is also what can leave you vulnerable." – Dr. Robert Melillo Key points: Movement is the foundation of brain development Modern life (tech, sitting, toxins) is driving brain imbalances Many issues (ADHD, autism, OCD, anxiety, depression) are developmental, not fixed defects Our culture and schools overtrain the left brain and neglect the right brain Right brain: social skills, emotional regulation, attachment, big-picture thinking Left brain: data, goals, tech, ego, short-term focused attention ADHD has different subtypes with different left/right brain patterns True healing means strengthening weaknesses, not just doubling down on strengths Medication can help short term, but long-term solutions focus on brain balance The brain is highly plastic and can change at any age About Dr. Robert Melillo: Dr. Robert Melillo is a leading expert in developmental neurological conditions such as ADHD, autism, OCD, tics, dyslexia, anxiety, and depression in both children and adults. With extensive knowledge of brain function, he has perfected a noninvasive, multi-modal method to significantly improve and correct many neurological disorders. His expertise in functional neuroanatomy and neurophysiology is unparalleled, backed by 30 years as a clinician, professor, brain researcher, and bestselling author. His book Disconnected Kids, soon to release its 3rd edition, is a cornerstone in its genre, translated into 16 languages. Co-founder of Brain Balance Achievement Centers and developer of the Melillo Method®, he also runs the Melillo Center for Developing Minds in NY. Dr. Melillo directs the National Institute for Brain and Rehabilitation Sciences and co-hosts the web series Disconnected Kids Reconnected Families with his wife Carolyn, boasting over 3 million views. Explore health and disease, not as fixed states but as a dynamic spectrum. Learn how herbal medicine can uniquely support people at every stage of this journey by matching the strength of the remedy to the severity of the imbalance, rather than waiting for diagnosable disease to set in. Here's what you'll learn: Why health and disease are better understood as a continuum, rather than a binary The concept of "homeodynamis" and why balance is always in motion 7 key stages of health: the enlightened state, peak health, constitutional imbalance, acute sickness or injury, generalized illness, disease, and death How early imbalances show up before diagnosable disease Why herbal medicine excels in the "in between" stages that conventional medicine often overlooks How to match herb strength, dosage, and strategy to each stage of imbalance When mild nutritive herbs are appropriate, and when stronger remedies are required Why lifestyle and diet must come before herbs in many cases How constitutional patterns shape both resilience and vulnerability ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at: http://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: http://www.facebook.com/EvolutionaryHerbalism https://www.instagram.com/evolutionary_herbalism/ Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP63opAmcpIAQg1M9ShNSQ Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: https://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com/evolutionary-herbalism-book/ Shop our herbal products: https://naturasophiaspagyrics.com/ ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. From clinical to spiritual perspectives, we don't just focus on what herbs are "good for," but rather who they are as intelligent beings, and how we can work with them to heal us physically and consciously evolve. ———————————— ABOUT SAJAH ———————————— Sajah Popham is the author of Evolutionary Herbalism and the founder of the School of Evolutionary Herbalism, where he trains herbalists in a holistic system of plant medicine that encompasses clinical Western herbalism, medical astrology, Ayurveda, and spagyric alchemy. His mission is to develop a comprehensive approach that balances the science and spirituality of plant medicine, focusing on using plants to heal and rejuvenate the body, clarify the mind, open the heart, and support the development of the soul. This is only achieved through understanding and working with the chemical, energetic, and spiritual properties of the plants. His teachings embody a heartfelt respect, honor and reverence for the vast intelligence of plants in a way that empowers us to look deeper into the nature of our medicines and ourselves. He lives on a homestead in the foothills of Mt. Iain McGilchrist is a former fellow at Oxford University and the author of a few books, including Ways of Attending: How our Divided Brain Constructs the World, The Matter With Things: Our Brains, Our Delusions and the Unmaking of the World, and The Master and His Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World. Greg and Iain discuss Iain's work on hemispheric differences in the brain, especially in The Master and His Emissary and The Matter with Things. Iain argues the left and right hemispheres embody distinct modes of attention—narrow, acquisitive focus versus broad, open vigilance—and that how we attend changes what we perceive. He rejects pop-psychology stereotypes and contends the right hemisphere “sees more” and should guide the left, which is useful but prone to delusion when dominant. Iain traces three Western cycles where early cultural flourishing gives way to left-hemisphere domination and civilizational decline, linking this to bureaucracy, organizational “exploit” drift, and modern metrics-driven thinking. They also discuss metaphor's centrality to science, AI's limits, mental-health decline, internet-driven polarization, and reforms to universities to revive the humanities alongside science. *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.* Episode Quotes: Imagination needs a maintenance of open attention 17:57: See, imagination is misunderstood. It's not about brainstorming and writing down every silly thing that comes into your head. Imagination is about seeing something below the level that is immediately accessible to the conscious mind and listening to that and responding to it, and pursuing it, and allowing something to grow. Now, that requires patience, time, and a continuing maintenance of open attention. Once it gets closed down, you've lost it. So that's one reason that it won't work. And the other is that if you've got too many people involved in the bureaucratic side, that's not going to work well either. There are specializations, and take the hint from nature. They are so different that they do need to be kept distinct if you're going to survive. Your attention shapes your reality 40:05: It is certainly true that there is a constant dialogue between our minds and the world. The world influences the mind and the brain, and the mind and the brain, having been influenced, in turn influence the world around us. So we can get locked into a vicious cycle in which we see things in a certain limited way, and we think that's all that there is. And so that feeds back to that being the only right way to think. Science is based on nothing but metaphors 30:32: Science is based on nothing but metaphors. It is entirely metaphorical. And that's not a mistake or a problem, because it can't avoid—I mean—the alternative would be to say nothing. But it has to say it's like this. And metaphor is saying this thing can be understood by likening it to something else. And the problem is that scientists don't realize that they're using metaphors and that their metaphors both dictate what it is they can see and how they see what it is that they do see. So, models, which science can't work without, are simply elaborated metaphors. There's a moment on the Ayurvedic path when we realize that knowing our constitution isn't enough. We may know our Prakriti, our true nature. We may even know what foods are “good” or “bad” for us. And yet… we still feel off. Bloated. Inflamed. Heavy. Unsettled. Or simply not fully ourselves. And this is where Ayurveda gently redirects us from who we are, to what is actually happening. From prakriti to vikruti.Because the truth is, most of us are not eating for our constitution, we're living in a state of Vikriti, or imbalance. And that imbalance is rarely simple. It's layered. It's dynamic. Often, it's dual-doshic or even tridoshic- heat and heaviness, dryness and stagnation, intensity and depletion, all coexisting in the same body.So the question becomes: Not just what should I eat? But what does my body need, right now, in this state? In today's episode, we're exploring Ayurvedic nutrition through that lens. Not as a rigid food list, but as a living relationship. We explore why so many people stay stuck, even when they're “eating healthy. And just as importantly, we're shifting the conversation beyond food itself. Because in Ayurveda, healing doesn't come from what we eat alone. It comes from when we eat. How we eat. The state of our nervous system as we eat. The rhythm, the pace, the presence. You can eat the most perfect diet for your dosha, and still create imbalance if the timing is off, if the quantity is too much, or if the body isn't ready to receive. There's a classical idea in Ayurveda that the strength of the vessel determines what can be given. And in many ways, this episode is about strengthening that vessel. So that what you eat can actually nourish you.If you've been trying to “eat right” but still feel out of balance…if you've been toggling between different food rules, unsure what applies to you…or if you're ready to understand Ayurvedic nutrition on a deeper, more intuitive level, this episode is for you. Two days into my wife being out of town, I already ate all four of her homemade waffles for breakfast. So much for moderation. That got me thinking about balance — the thing we all say we want but can never actually hold onto. Balance isn't a state. It's a moment. It shows up for a second, and then it's gone, like trying to stand on a balance ball at the gym. Today, I'll make the case that chasing balance might be stealing your best work. There's a better way to live, and it involves letting go. Featured Story When I was a kid, I was on a playground in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania, right by the Susquehanna River. My brother was bigger than I was, and we were on a seesaw trying to figure out how to balance it perfectly. Scoot forward a little. Scoot back. Tiny adjustments. For one beautiful moment, we nailed it. Both our legs were flying. Pure balance. Then he jumped off. And I crashed straight to the ground. I think about that seesaw every time someone tells me they want their life balanced. Because there are eight billion people out there who are more than happy to jump off and drop you. Important Points Balance isn't a static state you can lock in — it's dynamic and fleeting, and chasing it will keep you frustrated. Imbalance is often where your best work happens — when you're immersed, don't interrupt yourself to even things out. Eight billion people are ready to jump off your teeter-totter — stop expecting the world to stay balanced with you. Memorable Quotes Balance is a myth. Release yourself from the burden of trying to maintain it. Grab it when you can and just move on. I have learned in my own personal life that imbalance is actually better. It's just who I am, and maybe who you are too. If you try to balance yourself out, there are about eight billion people who will jump off and drop you to the ground. Scott's Three-Step Approach First, drop the idea that balance is something you can hold onto forever — it's a moment, not a permanent destination. Then, when you're fully immersed and in the zone, stay there — don't break your own flow just to even out the day. Then, when life knocks you off — and it will — embrace it as the swing, get back when you can, and keep going. Always seeking "balance" in health and fitness? Think our approach is too "extreme"? Coaches Justin and Amanda explore the myth of balance in life, emphasizing that serious achievements often require imbalance, even if only for a short time. They discuss how pursuing imbalance can lead to greater health, success, and fulfillment, challenging the conventional pursuit of balance. God made life to be lived in seasons. The key is to always prioritize what is most important in each season, and to not let the important things drop. But that will look different for each person in each new stage of life. Have you ever felt tired… but something about it didn't feel like true fatigue? In this episode, Colette explores the subtle but important difference between Kapha accumulation and true fatigue, and how easily the two can be confused. What feels like low energy may actually be heaviness, stagnation, and mental fog, which are signs that the body is asking for movement and stimulation, not more rest. Colette shares a recent personal experience of waking up feeling heavy, slow, and mentally foggy, not depleted, but stuck. Through her Ayurvedic lens she understood that these qualities were not in fact fatigue but a Kapha accumulation. Understanding this distinction prevented her from unintentionally moving further out of balance. She shares how to recognize these qualities in your body and how to respond in a way that restores balance. This episode is about tuning inwards and taking note of the qualities you feel in your body, being curious and building a deeper relationship with your body's inner intelligence. In this episode Colette discusses: The difference between Kapha imbalance and true fatigue Why "feeling tired" isn't always about needing more rest Common signs of Kapha accumulation (heaviness, fog, low motivation) How Kapha shows up in the mind as inertia and lack of clarity The concept of manda (slowness/dullness) in Ayurveda Why misinterpreting symptoms can lead to deeper imbalance Simple ways to support Kapha to restore balance The importance of awareness before taking action Why this is especially relevant during the spring season Episode Sponsor: Kerala Ayurveda Academy's India Immersion is a 14-day immersive experience guided by renowned Ayurvedic doctor Vaidya Jayarajan Kodikannath. Disconnection doesn't just happen… It builds quietly… over time. In this episode of Reignite: Love, Sex & Truth for Conscious Couples, we explore how masculine and feminine energy imbalances create emotional distance, shutdown, and the loss of polarity in relationships. They break down the subtle patterns that lead to disconnection… why she starts to close… why he pulls away… and what it actually takes to restore safety, respect, and attraction. This isn't about blame. It's about understanding the dynamic… and learning how to shift it. What You'll Hear in This Episode: Why disconnection isn't random and how imbalance builds slowly beneath the surface What happens when she holds too much, and why it pulls her out of her feminine flow Why does he shut down and how criticism, pressure, and feeling “not enough” impact masculine energy How both partners unknowingly reinforce the cycle of over-functioning and withdrawal Why communication alone doesn't fix this and what's actually missing How to begin restoring polarity through safety, awareness, and conscious repair Masculine and feminine imbalance doesn't mean your relationship is broken. It means something deeper is asking to be seen. And when you meet it consciously…she softens, and he steps forward. Connection deepens and attraction begins to return
I'm back with Gerard Rees from Simple Separation for part two of our conversation. In Episode 84, we spoke about superannuation what I sometimes call the hidden asset. In this episode, we're talking about something I hear from clients all the time: "I just want to be heard." But what does that actually mean in mediation? And more importantly how do you make sure your voice is heard without the room blowing up? Gerard shares what he listens for as a mediator when someone says that sentence. Often, it's not just about speaking. It's about power imbalance. It's about fear. It's about worrying you'll be intellectually, emotionally or financially overpowered. We talk about: How mediators create safety in the room Why preparation builds confidence The behaviours that can accidentally make you harder to hear The difference between telling your story and negotiating your future Income disparity and how "future needs" really work What happens when you're still living under one roof When mediation isn't appropriate and why a mediator has a duty to withdraw This is a practical, grounded, honest conversation about what mediation really looks like and how to approach it in a way that gives you the best chance of reaching an agreement you can actually live with. If you've ever said, "I asked my doctor to test my hormones and they only checked one thing," this episode is for you. I break down the difference between conventional labs and functional testing, why you can be told everything is normal while you still feel awful, and what to ask for next. Conventional Labs: Are You Sick Enough? Conventional testing is designed to look for disease. You are either sick or you are fine. The range is narrow, and if your numbers are not far enough outside of it, you are told you are normal. That can happen even if you are exhausted, gaining weight, losing hair, and struggling with brain fog. Thyroid is a common example. Many women are told their TSH is normal, end of story, even when their symptoms clearly point to hypothyroid issues. Functional Testing: Where Is the Imbalance? Functional testing looks at optimal ranges, not just whether you are sick enough for treatment. You can sit in a not great range for years. Not bad enough for medication, but not good enough to feel like yourself. Often, you are working hard just to stay afloat with clean eating, supplements, exercise, and stress management. That effort is keeping you from crashing, but it is not getting you into an optimal range. Why One Lab Value Is Not Enough Using thyroid again, TSH alone is not a full picture. We often need TSH, Free T3, Free T4, and antibody markers to really understand what is happening. You might be making hormones but not converting them properly because of stress, inflammation, nutrient deficiencies, or estrogen imbalances. If we do not look deeper, we miss that. Why This Matters I have lived this. After having kids, I went through postpartum thyroiditis. I was exhausted, foggy, losing hair, and felt terrible. I was told I was just a tired new mom. But I knew it was more than that. That experience is a big reason I am so passionate about functional testing. Too many women are dismissed when their labs do not fit into a narrow box. My favorite functional test is the DUTCH Test, a dried urine test for comprehensive hormones. It looks at estrogen and progesterone patterns, testosterone and other androgens, cortisol and adrenal function, key nutrient markers, gut and inflammation markers, neurotransmitters, melatonin, and more. It connects the dots so we can see what is really driving your symptoms. Ready to figure out what is really going on? Schedule a discovery call with my team and we can talk through your symptoms, your health history, and whether deeper functional testing like the DUTCH test would be the right next step for you. In this episode of the Review of Democracy podcast, Gabriel Pereira speaks with Gabriela Lotta about Democracy on a Tightrope: Politics and Bureaucracy in Brazil,co-authored with Pedro Abramovay and recently published by Central European University Press .Drawing on the Brazilian case, the conversation explores the risks that emerge when the relationship between politics and bureaucracy breaks down: on the one hand, therise of technocratic governance and the “fetishization of meritocracy”; on the other, the erosion of bureaucratic institutions by political leaders.Through a series of concrete policy cases, Lotta reflects on how these tensions shape democratic governance and what a more productive relationship between politicalleadership, expertise, and citizen participation might look like—both in Brazil and beyond.

In my experience, women often carry the mental and emotional weight at home, which goes unnoticed. This burden leads to feelings of being undervalued, even when performed willingly. Sharing this labor isn't just about dividing tasks evenly, but about mutual recognition and appreciation for every contribution, fostering a genuine sense of partnership within the family. When I embarked on this journey to balance the labor in our home, it became clear that change must start with me. Through open conversations, I encouraged my family to recognize the invisible labor and prompted them towards owning more responsibilities. This process is gradual, but change arises from understanding our roles, communicating with compassion, and being willing to adapt together. Rising electricity rates across the country are adding pressure to families and businesses already dealing with inflation in other aspects of their lives. Most Americans get their power from a utility that needs to turn a profit for its investors. And people are fed up with the status quo. “Across the country, the utilities have just gotten greedy and are asking for more than they need,” says Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes. Some communities are considering cutting out the profit motive for utilities, taking on the complicated and expensive prospect of moving to public power. But switching from an investor-owned utility to public power is an uphill battle. What are other strategies for reining in corporate greed and making electricity more affordable? Today we're having an uncomfortable but very necessary conversation about antidepressants and the theory that these drugs work for those with depression by correcting imbalanced chemicals in their brain. Our guest to discuss this topic is Joanna Moncrieff, a Professor of Psychiatry at University College London, and works as a consultant psychiatrist in the NHS. She is author of numerous scientific papers including a major review that showed there was little evidence to support the idea that depression is caused by a serotonin abnormality. Her most recent book "Chemically Imbalanced: the making and unmaking of the serotonin myth” is what we're going to be discussing today. This was a complete eye opener for me. For years I believed in the pharmaceutical washed message that antidepressants worked because of a genuine brain chemical imbalance that we corrected with medications. This is not proven.Today we'll discuss over-use and misrepresentation of psychiatric drugs in the public sphere, the changing philosophy of mental health and how we got to a point where over 8 million people in the UK use antidepressants. We discuss what serotonin is, how we measure it in the body, why the imbalance theory is inconclusive, whether antidepressants have good evidence that they work and their many side effects.I want to make it clear that this episode is not meant to shame or belittle anyone on medications for mental health, but provide accurate information about how we can safely treat these problems and offer informed consent weighing up the pros and cons of medications like antidepressants. The use of these medications has well recognised withdrawal and dependency effects and should not be stopped without strict supervision of your medical practitioner. We've also linked to the Maudsley deprescribing guidelines here in the show notes for practitioners educating themselves on how to do this with their patients.Chemically Imbalanced BookWebsite: https://joannamoncrieff.com/

As AI tools become more integrated into our nonprofits' daily workflows, it can feel as though the technology is moving faster than our ability to evaluate it. However, for mission-driven organizations, technology adoption isn't just a matter of efficiency—it's a reflection of our values. This episode steps back from the technical aspects of AI tools for nonprofits and explores the significant ethical questions that every nonprofit leader and board member should consider when shaping their AI policies.Carolyn explores the complex human issues that often get lost in the marketing noise, from the environmental and community costs of massive data centers to the inherent biases found in Large Language Models. She also discusses the potential risks to mental health and the concerns surrounding the concentration of power within a few global tech giants. Our goal isn't to steer you toward a specific choice, but to provide a framework for understanding how these tools may intersect—or conflict—with your commitment to equity, sustainability, and community trust. This conversation is designed to be a starting point for your internal discussions. We cover four major areas of concern: power imbalances, bias and exploitation, environmental impact, and the psychological effects of AI-human interactions. By acknowledging these challenges openly, nonprofit professionals can make more informed, intentional decisions about if, when, and how to use these tools in a way that truly serves their mission and the people they support.Resources: https://www.wired.com/ai-issue/ Imbalance of Power:https://www.forbes.com/sites/stevenwolfepereira/2026/01/20/davos-wont-save-us-from-ai-the-boardroom-might-be-our-last-hope/https://nonprofitquarterly.org/how-nonprofits-can-resist-the-ai-efficiency-trap/https://medium.com/@Craig_W/the-corporate-playbook-when-good-ai-goes-bad-by-design-aedf9621b07bBias and Exploitation: https://www.ibm.com/think/topics/ai-biasRacism, Surveillance and AI panel, Howard University, October 2025Environmental and Community Impact:https://news.mit.edu/2025/explained-generative-ai-environmental-impact-0117https://naacp.org/campaigns/stop-dirty-data-centersMental Health Impacts:https://jedfoundation.org/american-psychological-association-on-generative-ai/https://www.psychiatrictimes.com/view/preliminary-report-on-dangers-of-ai-chatbots _______________________________Start a conversation :) Register to attend a webinar in real time, and find all past transcripts at https://communityit.com/webinars/ email Carolyn at cwoodard@communityit.com on LinkedIn Thanks for listening.

These audio exclusives are made possible thanks to our member supporters.Description [original release date July 2025]: Sara Nelson knows how to leverage worker power — and so do the 55,000 flight attendants she represents. A union member since 1996, she's been the International President of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, AFL-CIO since 2014. You may remember her integral role in threatening a strike, which helped pressure the Trump administration to end the 2019 government shutdown. But under the second Trump term, the administration plans to gut many government agencies and has canceled one million contracts for federal workers so far. “We have to understand that if one group is under attack, we're next,” she tells Laura Flanders in this exclusive interview. “So we have to rush to each other's sides.” In this episode, Nelson and Flanders explore labor movement tactics and strategies, wins and losses, and why general strikes and cross-industry worker solidarity are critical in this moment. What is her message and her mission for 2025? All that, plus a commentary from Laura on floods and profits.“We have to understand that if one group is under attack, we're next. So we have to rush to each other's sides. But we can also turn this around and not just be on defense. . . We are in a crisis. Yeah. Our world is burning. We can actually set the agenda and make things better.”Guest: Sara Nelson: International President of the Association of Flight Attendants- (AFA-CWA) (representing 55,000 Flight Attendants at 20 airlines) Watch the episode released on YouTube July 18th 5pm ET; PBS World Channel July 20th, and on over 300 public stations across the country (check your listings, or search here via zipcode).
