As hip-hop began to spread its wings in the 70s and 80s, breaking into mainstream media was the logical next step. Getting a record deal and radio play was the goal for many emerging artists, but they soon found that the industry was not all it was cracked up to be. Legendary hip-hop pioneer Melle Mel joins Caz to talk about “The Message” and the peaks and pitfalls of the music industry. Plus, Sha Rock returns to tell her story about being in one of the first groups to get a record deal and the struggles that came with it. So keep your ears open because we're delivering cautionary tales and triumphs in this episode. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
On episode 189 of "Don't Take It Personal" the show starts with Jay Wil talking about his engagement. The guys then go into another episode of fan questions that were submitted. As always the conversations cover everything from music to movies and much more.
The New Old Heads podcast episode 255 had discussions on The Fugees returning for a tour run at the end of 2021, JD and Diddy and a potential Verzuz between them, Phonte saying Little Brother has never received any money from ABB, and Rolling Stone's horrible "Top 500 Songs of All Time" list. Could artist re-recording old music become a more common thing amongst musicians in the near future? The pod gives their review of DMX's first posthumous release, and gives a shout out to Drake for supporting the battle rap scene.
Greetings! Welcome back to another installment of this illustriousness! This week, we chop it up about some shaky business Nike has going on with this “Draw” Business on their SNKRS app, as well as resellers (the scum of this earth). Crypto currency talk! Baltimore's own Black Genius feature with Vans. We get into “Dark City: Beneath The Beat” and why we don't support it. Desmond shares some stories about his fallen hero, his uncle (rest in power), as well as we finally speak about DMX, Black Rob, and that leads to a convo about unionizing hip hop. And much more! Industry Rule #4080: Record Company people are shadyyyyyyyyyyyy! Ain't nothing changed since Q-Tip's proclamation. Coal miners have unions. Steel workers have unions. Airline pilots have unions. Actors and actresses have unions. PODCASTERS even have unions! Why not artists, producers and musicians? Heavy hitters such as Joe Budden, Lupe Fiasco and N.O.R.E. have broached the topic but we have found no evidence of movement toward bringing a Hip Hop Union to fruition. Spotify is under fire from unionization of podcasters. Seemingly, there hasn't been a peep from artist; definitely not an organized "peep". Why not? Now we DID undercover vital information that will benefit major label artists going forward. Our opinions are cool. But this info is the meat of this entire conversation. My mind is still blown by what Allan brought to the table on this one. Just in time for Thanksgiving week, Nikole Hannah-Jones joins the podcast to discuss revisionist history, which often omits the ways slavery provided a foundation for the U.S. to thrive. She is a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for The New York Times Magazine and creator of the 1619 Project. In the time since its debut, “The 1619 Project” has been widely celebrated for its candor and creativity, and some schools around the country have even introduced it into their curricula.Predictably, the project has had vocal, vitriolic detractors — most of whom are white and one of whom is an outgoing president — revolt against its honest depictions of America's founding, which deviate from the rosy images they have seen for years. In short: They big mad!But ― to borrow a trite phrase ― “facts don't care about your feelings.” Hannah-Jones is as powerful a truth-teller as you will find today. Listen and learn.Later in the episode, Ja'han and Shaquille dissect the 2021 GRAMMY award nominees, and discuss Hasan Minhaj's viral video, as well as the powerful 'Fresh Prince of Bel-Air' reunion special, and why Netflix is pulling 'Chapelle's Show' from its catalog. This week, we discuss the latest Pitchfork article discussing the pitfalls of being Black in the "indie" music industry. The article was an interesting, well written piece on the struggles in the industry, however, we ask....what is Conde Nast-owned Pitchfork doing to assist Black artists and correct it's years long marginalization of these artists? Also, your boy Logic calls out Def Jam for non-payment of artists. This is a long string of Industry Rule ### type of complaints, however it is spurring discussion around unionization of recording artists and their support staff. We discuss. Plus new music from Amani & King, and a revisit of SBTRKT's 2011 self-titled album. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

What's good Few Tang Clan!?!? Welcome to Part One of at least a Three Part series lol. We're talking about "gettin on", record deals and the music industry on a whole. Y'all know we don't do interviews. We do, however, have real conversations with people we admire and respect. Today, Henderson and Raleigh's own Small World talked to us about how much the mere thought of getting a deal meant early on. We learn how his music got from Raleigh to Wyclef Jean to Chaka Zulu at DTP. We go over Industry Rule #4080... Y'all really just need to listen to this one. They're gems everywhere. And remember; this is not an interview. Think about it like eavesdropping on friends telling Hip Hop stories. We hope you enjoy listening to this conversation as much as we enjoyed having it. The world went into mourning and so the fellas take a moment to reflect on Kobe and how he impacted them. On a slightly lighter note, Industry Rule #4080 (Record company people are shady) was on full display as Kelis put The Neptunes on blast in an interview about stealing her publishing. AFTERBUZZ TV - AfterBuzz TV's Mini Spotlight edition, is a short form interview series featuring actors & artists discussing their roles and shows as well as their thoughts, passions and journeys. In this episode host Ashley Allen interviews Mada-Honey Project. Honey B is a recording Hip-Hop Artist, Singer/Songwriter/Producer/Designer born in Australia, operating frequently in California. With a strong love for music, and a deep connection with it from a very young age, Honey B Sweet is primed to take the entertainment world by storm. “Whenever a song came on I felt like I was inside the music, I got visions and always felt that it was where I was meant to be” says Honey B. Sweet Her musical inspirations include Tupac, Bone-Thugz-N-Harmony, Lauryn Hill, Snoop Dogg and Destiny’s Child. “I have been writing poetry since the age of 8. At first it was about horses and other kinds of animals, but as I got older it elevated into subjects of love, life and relationships. Eventually poetry turned into songs, and messing around on my computer turned into recording demos.”As a female competing in one of the hardest industries to break into, Honey B Sweet has learned many a lesson, including ‘Industry Rule #4080″. Combining talent, alongside a savvy business mind, Honey B Sweet’s ceiling appraises extremely high. In late May 2017, she leaked a song that was inspired by the late Tupac Shakur titled “Unconditional Love” (Honey-Mix), while paying homage to arguably the greatest emcee of all-time, and receiving excellent feedback. Versatile; methodical with a wild side, Honey B Sweet now teams up with Mada for a new EP project via Liger Ent this summer. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
